Pretty Much as Advertised
Crutchfield customer from Scottsdale, AZ on 10/17/2020
Arrived within a couple of days and performs just as expected. I felt like I may have lost a little volume (just driving two sets of speakers right now), but turning it up on the amp seemed to help and it seems to be fine. It says in the instructions that the warranty is void if you connect it to an amp with more than 100 watts...mine is 150w, so I found this irritating, since it wasn't in the description. So far so good, though.

This speaker switch is exactly what was needed to send the signal from the powered zone 2 output of my home theater receiver to the 5 stereo zones in my house. I was confused when researching parts, assuming that all 10 speakers couldn't be powered by the one Zone 2 amp on the home theater receiver, but this passive speaker switch uses impedance matching to safely run any combination of the speakers. Unless you are looking for really loud Hi-Fi sound in every zone, the powered switch options are totally unnecessary. Just make sure your receiver has a powered zone 2 out, or be prepared to have a separate amp powering the switch. Due to the limitations of my home theater receiver (would not send sound to rear height surround speakers when powered zone 2 was in use) I actually ended up using the zone 2 line out and powering the Niles with an old stereo receiver I had lying around. I may try and find a standalone stereo amp to save some space in the AV cabinet and to take advantage of the full 100 watts the Niles is rated for, but for now the whole house audio system sounds great and I don't see a need to spend any more money right now. I only wish there was a way to control the zone volumes remotely from a mobile app. Had I done more research before hand I may have gone with a wi-fi based whole house audio system like Sonos, especially since I'm not too concerned with the Hi-Fi quality of all the extra zones. But hey, I kinda like the old school setup... with wires!
Pros: - Safely send sound to up to 6 stereo zones from one powered stereo source - Independent zone volume control - rated for up to 100 watts - Sounds great
Cons: - No mobile control of individual zone volumes - must turn knobs on the unit itself or install in-wall wired volume knobs for each zone - While it sounds great to me, if you're looking for Hi-Fi high powered stereo in all 6 zones (why!?) you may want to look into a different setup

The Niles SSVC-6 is the perfect unit for sending music to all six rooms in my home. The volume control for each room allows for the best volume in each room -large living room (18x24) vs. small study (11x11).

Touchy Setup but all good
TomA from New York on 6/10/2015
Had some trouble getting it up and running (just one pair of speakers for some unknown reason) but all good now.
Pros: Very heavy, well made device. I have 5 pairs a varying speakers (different sizes, etc...) and they are all sounding as good as they did when they were connected directly to the amp. It does what it says it does.
Cons: I wish the speaker selector buttons had lights to indicate which were on. The speaker wire harnesses on the back requires you to use a screwdriver. They are difficult to work with but they do unplug, which makes it much easier. I had trouble with one pair out of the 5. It was one of those times where you try a number of things and suddenly it works with no explanation. Perhaps I did not have the wire properly seated in the harness. Crutchfield Support was stellar as usual - love those guys!

Running 5 zones in house off of an old Yamaha receiver. Set-up was tedious with screw-in wire connectors, but that allows you to change the sequence of the speaker terminals later without un-doing anything (just un-plug & re-plug blocks into the desired terminal). Sound is solid, even with no amplifier on 6-yr old low-end receiver. Drawbacks (2) are minor - first is the price which seems excessive even though the unit appears built to last. second is the lack of range on the volume selectors and the adjustability is limited to "clicks" instead of fine tuning. Overall a solid piece of equipment that allows for easy push button zone selection. Crutchfiled experience was excellent (as usual).

Does exactly what it is supposed to do
wguiot from Tucson, AZ on 4/21/2008
I installed 2 of Niles speaker selectors for my house. I have installed 12 pairs of speakers and needed to select among them and adjust the volume appropriately. I have since installed 5 more speaker pairs, and just ordered a 3rd of these Niles. The product features a high quality construction. They are built like a tank. The volume knobs are sturdy. No hiss, no noise, no cracking. I'm very impressed. I think the ultimate test for a speaker selector is to turn on a single pair, and start turning the others one at a time. Since the Niles automatically adjusts the impendence as you add more speakers, you can't even hear volume variations on the first pair you had on. That is a testament to how smoothly it performs the transitions from 1 pair to all 6. That smoothness is what your amp needs to be protected. I personally like the screw-in terminal. When you are dealing with 18 pairs of speaker, you need to be able to take your time and space screwing in the wires and ensure there are no exposed wires. Then, the terminal plugs in perfectly on the back on the Niles. At that point the space and visibility can be limited, but you know it is plugged in correctly (the connectors are keyed so that they can't go in backwards), and the wires are secured in place. I set up my Niles to have all the speaker volumes 2 positions below the maximum. That allows room to increase the volume 2 notches in places I want to be louder (by the pool, or garage), without sacrificing quality.

Niles delivers decent speaker distribution
david from West Chester, PA on 6/7/2006
I found this product very easy to install. What do you expect hooking up 6 pairs of speakers and 1 set to the amp. I have it distributed to 6 rooms on main floor including kitchen, dining, family, playroom, gameroom and office. I use in-wall Polk speakers. Its great to be able to set each individual room with a default starting sound level. Additionally any room can be turned off/on in any combination. I have a low-end Sony receiver as my sound source and it integrates nicely. I found the music delivered via the Niles box was clear and covered a wide spectrum. Bass was lacking but I expected that with smaller in-wall speakers. What is it lacking...No remote control capabilities at all on the unit but that can be suplemented by the receiver/amp that will be connected to it. Wire guage was difficult to get into adapters - switched down one grade and it was easy to insert and screw. No bass/treble controls. I recommend this unit for anyone looking for simple speaker distribution with above average sound and ease of implementation. Its not going to set any artist on fire but delivers as expected.

Not for Audiophiles
Charles from Southern California on 11/11/2005
The Niles SSVC-6 touts undistorted signal division for up to 6 pairs of speakers. Despite its rather tedious speaker-wire connection set-up, I decided to try it, based on the encouraging spec sheet. However, I was very disappointed by the flat, muted signal it actually transmitted. Even after reducing connections to one speaker pair, I was unable to get the SSVC-6 to produce a better signal. Increasing the volume (or signal feed) only made it louder, but still flat and two-dimensional. It was a relief to disconnect it and hear full, three-dimensional sound from my speakers once again. Especially for the price, this device is a big disappointment. Audiophiles beware.
