I'd buy it again if I had to

Crutchfield customer from Red Bud, IL on 5/29/2018

I bought this as a replacement for one that lasted 5 years. The product seems to be good quality as you expect from Niles. It worked great right up to the end. Sounded just as good as directly wired. This spring the left channel went out. I have this way back under a deep covered patio. It has never seen a drop of rain or any direct sunlight. Thus the 4 stars. Five years isn't bad, and obviously, I bought another one. I just expected longer from a pretty gently used Niles product.

Easy to install and good instructions. Screws provided to attach to wall could be longer, as most outdoor applications have the junction box mounted deeper based on being behind the exterior wall. I went to the hardware store and spent under $1 to fix the issue.

First-class wall-mount volume control for outdoors

David from New Orleans, LA on 2/14/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Easy to install and very quiet in switching. Otherwise, it is invisible in the signal path -- a good thing. The Niles WVC100k replaced a competitor's outdoor wall-mounted volume control that had failed prematurely. This one's transformers are bigger, and the rubber gasket around the face plate seems to create a fairly good seal.

Pros: Quiet, easy to install, robust construction, good instructions

Cons: None so far

My house was pre-wired for outdoor speakers, but I needed a control to put in the junction box. With it being outside and the tendency for frequent rain, I was pleased to find one designed for outdoor. It's a solid built control, simple to install, and no issues with it's performance.

If one is using wired technology, this is a necessary component since it allows volume to be controlled at the point of listening.

Pros: Easy to install and it works.

Cons: None.

Best looking outdoor controls

Aaron from Felton, PA on 5/6/2013

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Great volume control. Impedance matching makes installing multiple sets of outdoor speakers easy. Nice looking knobs and plates versus the standard grey PVC controls. Make sure you use a deep single gang box to accommodate the wire and control.

Pros: Looks good, Impedance controls,

Cons: Needs a lot of space in the box, will not accept 14 gauge only 16 gauge or less

Features

Overview: The WVC100K is a waterproof stereo speaker volume control that connects between the speaker-level output of an amplifier, speaker selector, or a Niles distribution hub and a pair of speakers. Premium-quality parts and construction ensure high-fidelity sound with flat frequency response and 100 watts continuous power handling.

Four Colors: The WVC100K installs in-wall in an outside location in a standard single-gang junction box (J-box). The package includes a wall plate and knob in each of four colors - white, almond, bone, and black.

Selectable Impedance Magnifying Circuit: A universal impedance magnifying circuit enables the WVC100K to act as both stereo and an impedance magnifying volume control. You can magnify the speakers' impedance by a factor of two, four, or eight, allowing you to connect up to eight pair of speakers to a single amplifier or receiver. A sliding switch on the front on the volume control lets you set the impedance factor to 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x.

12-Step Control: The rotary design gives 12-step control, and a total of more than 48dB maximum attenuation. The high-quality construction assures you get pop-free switching between all steps.

Autoformers: Precision autoformers provide superior sonic performance, exceeding the audio quality of non-impedance magnifying volume controls.

Removable Screwless Speaker Connectors: Two piece, screwless speaker connectors make installation quick and secure. Each connector can accept up to 16-gauge wire.

Isolated Grounds: Isolated left and right-channel grounds ensure safety with any amplifier.

Impedance Compatibility: The WVC100K can be used with 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm speaker systems.

Installation Considerations

Outdoor Wall Mount Application: The WVC100K volume control is designed for environmental wall-mount installation. It comes with a waterproof rubber gasket to protect the volume control's internal circuits from moisture.

Speaker Wire: The WVC100K will accept stranded copper wire up to 16-gauge. Larger (lower gauge) wire is not recommended, as it will not fit into the connectors. Solid-core, aluminum, or "Romex" wire is not recommended. Most states require in-wall speaker wire to have a specific "CL" fire rating.

Required Tools: To install the WVC100K, you will need a Phillips screwdriver and wire stripper.

Hi Monee, Yes. This is wired between the receiver/amplifier and the speaker. It shuts down my Polk Atrium outdoor patio speakers and my Yamaha ceiling speakers in the shower and bath just fine. It will not turn off self-powered speakers though.
