About the Nuheara IQbuds™ BOOST

James Ralston

Hear more detail in your music and the world outside

At first glance, Nuheara's IQbuds BOOST may seem similar to other true wireless headphones: they play your music via Bluetooth and let you take calls using your phone. But these intelligent earbuds do way more than that. They enhance your hearing, so you can get more out of your music, TV shows, conversations, and interactions with the outside world in general.

Who are they for?

IQbuds are geared toward the millions of people who suffer from some hearing loss. Having played drums in loud bands for over 30 years, I knew I would be a good candidate to try these amazing little earbuds out. I wasn't disappointed. Read on for details from my test drive.

Nuheara IQbuds BOOST in included charging case

The IQbuds BOOST include a charging case that banks enough power for up to 20 hours of music.

It's all about the app

In order to use the IQbuds BOOST, you first need to complete a hearing self-assessment that's built into Nuheara's smartphone app. I'm glad to say, this is one really well-designed app. I didn't even need to crack open any documentation to get started. The hearing test was easy and took only about 10 minutes. (Frankly, I'm looking forward to running it again in a quieter room to see if I can get even better results.)

Calibrated for your specific ears

Once your hearing test is complete, the IQbuds BOOST calibrate themselves and apply processing based on your specific hearing profile. This processing is present on everything you hear: music from your phone, TV soundtracks (more on this in a bit), conversations, and more. Right away, I found it quite a bit easier to hear my family members over ordinary ambient household sounds. And that was before getting into the app's extensive array of adjustments.

Many ways to personalize

These sound-isolating earbuds naturally block out external noises. I used a set of included Comply™ foam ear tips to get a good seal. (As with any in-ear headphones, a good seal is key all the way around, when it comes to performance.) An array of tips are provided to help you get a good fit. You can toggle the sound of the outside world on and off using the app or tap touch controls built into the earbuds. And within the app, you can adjust the volume level, frequency balance, and angle of focus of "World" sounds, as well as SINC™ speech-boosting processing. All of these options can be adjusted in fine increments, so you can really dial in the earbuds according to your preferences.

Stream TV sound

Use the IQbuds BOOST along with Nuheara's optional IQstream TV to send audio signals from your TV to the earbuds. (Technically, the signal streams to your phone, then to the earbuds.) This low-latency signal minimizes lip sync problems, and you can adjust the level of your TV audio stream independently from external sounds. I found this setup to be really useful and flexible.

For instance, let's say someone decides to mix daiquiris in the blender upstairs while you're trying to hear a key passage of dialogue. No problem — one tap on your phone turns off the world volume, one slider adjustment increases the dialogue boost — and you're good to go. Later, when your significant other comes downstairs to give you a daiquiri, tap once to turn back on the world volume, and you can have a conversation and watch at the same time. And the IQstream TV is great for late-night viewing, of course, because you can keep your TV's speakers off entirely while you watch.

So, how well do they work for music?

As soon as I started doing a little bit of focused listening, I realized that the personalized hearing processing was adding back detail, mostly in the higher frequencies, that I'd gotten used to missing over the span of decades. The presentation is nicely balanced and musical, with solid (but not overbearing) bass. I'm usually more of an over-the-ear headphone fan, and listening with in-ear headphones has an inherently different kind of feel. But I'm sure I'll be reaching for the IQbuds frequently in the future, because the idea of hearing what I've been missing is a tantalizing and fascinating thing.

Features

Overview: Nuheara IQbuds BOOST are wireless in-ear headphones that are designed for people who suffer from some degree of hearing loss. Like other "true wireless" headphones, IQbuds BOOST can stream music and take phone calls wirelessly from your smartphone. Using the companion app, they can also analyze your hearing and boost the frequencies that make up your hearing loss. You'll be able to hear conversations and natural sounds better, and make your music and TV shows more enjoyable. IQbuds BOOST includes three pairs of Comply foam ear tips, eight pairs of silicone ear tips, oval and round, and a charging case.

Bluetooth 4.2: IQbuds BOOST has Bluetooth version 4.2 for music playback and phone calls. They feature A2DP, HFP v1.6, HSP, and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles, and support aptX and aptX Low Latency for better sound quality and no delay from TV audio. The IQbuds are compatible with Siri and Google Now, and can be activated with a double-tap of the left earbud's touch sensor. The ear buds are resistant to water, sweat, and rain. The internal circuitry is coated with NanoProof water protection which gives the ear buds an IPX7 waterproof rating.

IQbuds App: To take advantage of the features of IQbuds BOOST, you will need to download the IQbuds application to your smartphone. With the app, you can view your Ear ID results, raise or lower the volume of each ear bud independently, personalize the sound to your liking (EQ), and control features such as SINC, World Blend, World EQ, and Focus. The app is compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 and up, and with Apple iPhone and iPad with iOS 9.3 or later.

Ear ID: Ear ID is a clinically-backed audiometric hearing assessment that calibrates the IQbuds BOOST to your personal hearing profile. The assessment follows three steps: Measure, Analyze, and Calibrate. After downloading the IQbuds app, you can complete the Ear ID in-app hearing test. A series of tones are played in each ear bud at 500Hz, 1000Hz, 2000Hz, 3000Hz, 4000Hz, and 6000Hz, within a range of 20dB to 70dB. As you respond to the tones using the app, Ear ID evaluates your unique hearing profile, and then calibrates your IQbuds especially for you, using the licensed NAL-NL2 self-fitting formula. The IQbuds don't simply amplify all sounds. They boost sounds in the frequencies shown to be lacking in your hearing profile. The result is clearer conversations in noisy environments, enhanced music enjoyment, and the ability to adjust the amount of ambient noise that you hear.

SINC: Super Intelligent Noise Control (SINC), lets you control the balance between "world" noise and speech. In the a circular touch control in the IQbuds app, you can blend in the level of ambient noise you want in your ear buds. Rotating the control counter-clockwise reduces the amount of world noise, while a clockwise motion increases it. SINC can be turned on/off with a single tap of the right ear bud, or in the app.

Focus: IQbuds BOOST can isolate and enhance the sounds directly in front of you using the built-in directional microphones and audio "beamforming" technology. The Focus feature lets you hear conversations much more clearly in noisy restaurants or at dinner parties. While SINC suppresses sound from all directions, Focus lets you choose to suppress noise directly behind you, while enhancing the sound in front of you. Focus can be turned on or off using the IQbuds app.

Battery Power: Each IQbuds BOOST ear bud has a 120mAh rechargeable battery, plus the included charging case contains a 1140mAh battery. Fully charged ear buds provide approximately 8 hours of audio streaming or 12 hours of hearing processing. The charging case provides hours of additional battery power to the IQbuds, for a total of 20 hours of music streaming and 32 hours of assistive audio. The ear buds charge in approximately 90 minutes inside the charging case. The charging case takes about 3 hours to charge, using the included USB cable. A row of four LEDs on the charging case indicate the charging status of the case and the ear buds inside. The charging case output is rated at 5 Volts / 1.1 Amps. Charging case dimensions: Width 3.842" Height 1.325" Depth 1.837".

Included Ear Tips: The IQbuds BOOST includes a total of 11 pairs of ear tips to make sure you have the best fit. There are three pairs (S, M, L) of Comply Foam ear tips which provide maximum noise isolation, soft comfort, a secure fit. In addition, there are eight pairs of silicone rubber ear tips--four sizes (XS, S, M, L) of round ear tips and four sizes of oval ear tips.

Optional IQStream TV: With the optional Nuheara IQstream TV, you can stream high quality sound from your TV directly to your IQbuds. You can enjoy watching TV at your own volume level, while allowing others to watch TV at a comfortable level.
