Overview

Our take on the Kicker 44KSS6504

I love a perfectly crafted pop song, and if I had to pick a pair of affordable car speakers to handle those harmonies and pristine production, Kicker's KS Series speakers would be a great choice. Their 44KSS6504 component system features two quality 6-1/2" woofers, two powerful tweeters, and two external crossovers. The polypropylene woofer with its powerful magnet handles up to 125 watts RMS, giving you natural sound with plenty of low-frequency punch. And the 1" silk dome tweeter delivers every ounce of smoothness you'd want in your music's vocal and instrumental details. The system's efficient crossovers act as traffic cops, diverting low and high frequencies to the designated speakers to reveal nuances you may have never heard in your favorite songs.

The KS component woofer cone features a phase plug that you can remove and replace with the component tweeter for use as a coaxial speaker.

A+ for versatility

Kicker also gives you the option of screwing the component tweeters on in place of the woofer's removable phase plug, giving you a coaxial speaker that benefits from the superior performance of an external crossover.

Do touch that dial

While we'd recommend using an aftermarket amp to power this system, Kicker gave the KS Series a highly sensitive design that conjures hefty volume even from low-powered factory radios.

Fit matters

These low-profile speakers feature a reduced mounting depth, making them a match for almost any car. And the refined, black grilles included with the package allow you to do a custom installation that'll add nice flair to your factory interior.

I have used Kicker products for "rear fill" and have been very happy with my purchase. This is my first time using Kicker for "front staging" and my main fear before buying these was lack of mid bass. My fear was completely justified. The mids and highs sound crisp and clear (not to mention loud), but the midbass is almost nonexistent. I will keep these and use them for a while, but they WILL be replaced in the future. I bought these on sale ($50 discount). I would NOT buy these at full price. They simply are not worth it. If you aren't looking for midbass then these will work great.

Pros: Can play very loud without distortion. Very crisp and clear tweeters without being overbearing

Cons: Little to no midbass

What a difference over my old speakers. Especially, with the tweeters mounted on my door, it made a huge difference. Not only that but, free shipping to Hawaii? Yes, thank you.

Like these speakers ALOT. Highs are amazing! Put these in my rear deck in a 96 corrola @100 RMS. Definitely out preform my 4" coaxials from the same series in the front. Like these soo much I'm considering having the 5 1/4" model professionally installed.

Pros: Clear highs. these can take some power! Give them it.

Cons: Don't have any yet.

Awesome sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had these speakers on for a bit over 3 months on now. I play them at high volumes everyday and they are very clean and rich sounding. The tweeters are amazing especially if anyone has a sub set up in the trunk. Without a sub it is a bit loud but still pure and stand proud with the name. Thanks for a detailed info by crutchfield on these items. They fit perfectly fine on all 4 doors on a pontiac g8

Pros: Everything about them

Cons: The size of the crossovers may sometimes make it a bit difficult to mount

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in a 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Took a little work to install everything, most specifically: 1) The tweeters require modification to the factory locations. I found a video with a great method of cutting the old speaker coil baskets as close tot he magnets as possible. Once you remove the voice coil and magnet you can then insert the tweeter from the top with the trim ring installed and use one of the included threaded rings to tighten everything up. 2) The kits provided by Crutchfield for mounting the mids do not fit exactly in either location. A few minor cuts and some screws harvested from the Kicker speakers themselves easily solve the issues and make a rock solid mount. 3) The crossovers took a little work to mount near the factory locations but if you take your time it is easily doable. I was able to stash the rear crossovers in the speaker bar itself. The fronts are pretty easy to tuck into the dash. There is a bar under the glove box that made a perfect location for the passenger one and the bar just behind the driver door wiring harness connection made a great place for the other. 4) Wiring was simple but you will pretty much have to cut into your factory harnesses. Just remember that the factory tweeters and mids are wired to the same speaker wire and use the Crutchfield adapters to confirm polarity. All this said these speakers sound AWESOME and are totally worth the time and effort to install! HIGHLY recommended.

Pros: Very rich sound with very clear highs and pounding mids. They don't need a ton of power (35x4 Amp drives them great) to sound fantastic.

Cons: A little work to install in a Jeep Wrangler but WELL worth it!

Superior Sound!

Very high quality as expected from Kicker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kicker never disappoints. My highs and mids are much cleaner with no distortion at higher volumes even when powered off the factory head unit. The low end has a much better attack with a great full sound. Staging is far improved and installation was very easy with wiring and various mounting options included in the factory packaging. I can't wait to actually add a sub, multiple amps, and an aftermarket receiver and really push them with the power they deserve. Even with factory source unit kickers components destroy the factory speakers in quality and volume.

Pros: Improved sound spectrum from top to bottom. Sound staging is a huge improvement even in factory locations with factory source unit and no amplification or extra processing. Easy installation with multiple mounting options and wiring included in the package. Adjustable tweeter db switch to allow improved staging for each component location.

Cons: None that I have found as of yet.

Outperforms for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the kicker KS 6x8s in the rear of my 1979 Ford Fairmont Futura. This was my first component install, which was a little daunting, but man I couldn't be happier with how it came out. I buy Kicker KS for all my cars & you just can't beat the sound quality for the money you spend. All the comparable speakers run almost twice as much & they weren't convertible which is how I have them mounted. These sound so awesome compared to the coaxials, which is a feat in itself. Love the adjustable cross over, the highs get REALLY loud. Buy if you're looking for some awesome components, at a reasonable price. (Even though I would've paid more, I'm pretty sure I'm happier with these than I would be with like a $300-$400 pair of alpine components or focals)

Pros: Lower Price High performance Versatile install

Cons:

Features

Woofer Cones: The Kicker KS-series speakers feature durable Polypropylene woofer cones, resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Woofer Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the woofer basket also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which should be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come with brackets to allow multiple mounting configurations; flush-mount, angle-mount, and surface-mount:

  Flush Angle Surface
Mounting Height 0.30" 0.70" 1.16"
Mounting Depth 0.65" 0.62" screw depth
Frame Diameter 2.315" 2.335" 1.916"
Cutout Diameter 1.752" 1.765" N/A

Coaxial Tweeter Mount: In addition to standard tweeter mounting options, the included tweeter mounting post lets you mount the tweeter directly to the center of the woofer, giving you a standard coaxial speaker. When the tweeter is attached to the woofer the mounting height increases to 0.814" (top mount) and the tweeter protrusion increases to 0.447" (bottom mount).

Crossovers: The component system includes passive 2-way crossover networks for a seamless transition between the woofers and tweeters. The slope is 12dB per octave (both high pass and low pass) and the crossover point is 4000 Hz. A switch on each crossover allows you to adjust the tweeter output; 0 dB, +4.5 dB, or +9 dB. The crossover has screw terminals that will accept bare wire or spade terminals up to 0.3" wide. The crossovers' dimensions are:

  • Length: 5.58"
  • Width: 2.85"
  • Height: 1.27"

The tweeters will fit the factory sail panels in most vehicles, sure. You'll find the mounting dimensions of the tweeters and the supplied brackets for them by clicking the "Details" tab on the Kicker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table.
