About the MTX JackHammer JH7005

LOUD

Nothing's louder than a jack hammer, right? MTX proves that with their JackHammer Series JH7005 five-channel amplifier, which can put out 60 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, plus up to 450 watts RMS to a subwoofer. Or, you could bridge the front and rear channels to power a pair of high-performance speakers with 180 watts each, while powering a sub with 450 watts. Speaker-level inputs let you integrate the amp into a system with a factory radio.

Controls on top

All the tuning controls are located on the amp's top panel, so you'll have easy access to them after installation. For the front and rear channels, variable high- and low-pass filters optimize the sound to fit your particular speakers. For the sub channel, low-pass and subsonic filters optimize the performance of your subwoofer and enclosure. You can add extra punch with a bass boost. A wired remote control lets you run your sub from the front seat.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The JH7005 5-channel amplifier is effectively three amps built into one chassis, two full range 2-channel amps labeled Front and Rear, and a mono amp labeled Sub. Each pair of full range channels is bridgeable, so the amp can be wired as 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel. MTX uses a Class A/B design for the full range channels and Class D for the subwoofer channel.

CTA-2006 Compliant: CTA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CTA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CTA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • Full Range Channels: 60 watts RMS x 4 into 4Ω
    • Subwoofer Channel: 250 watts RMS x 1 into 4Ω (20-150 Hz)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 60 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • Full Range Channels:
      • 2Ω: 90 watts RMS x 4 (≤1.0% THD+N)
      • Bridged (4Ω): 180 watts RMS x 2 (≤1.0% THD+N)
    • Subwoofer Channel:
      • 2Ω: 450 watts RMS x 1 (≤1% THD+N)

Controls:

  • Turn On: 2-position switch; select Remote (wired) or Audio (signal sensing)
  • Input Mode: choose 5-channel (dedicated front, rear, and sub inputs), 4-channel (dedicated front and rear inputs), or 2-channel (just a single stereo input)
  • Input Level: 2-position switch; select preamp-level or speaker-level
  • Gain: independent rotary gain controls for the front, rear, and Sub channels; variable from 135mV to 10V
  • Crossovers: separate crossover controls for the front, rear, and sub channels
    • Front and Rear: the front and rear crossover controls are identical
      • X-Over: 3-position switch; low pass, full range, or high pass
      • Frequency: rotary control; variable from 40 Hz to 250 Hz
    • Sub:
      • LPF: rotary frequency control; variable from 40 Hz to 250 Hz; the low pass filter is always engaged (it cannot be bypassed)
      • Sub Sonic: rotary frequency control; variable from 20 Hz to 50 Hz; used to remove extremely low frequencies that can't be cleanly reproduced by the subwoofer
  • Bass Boost: increase the subwoofer channel bass level between 0dB and +12dB via the rotary control; centered at 45 Hz

Wire Connections: The JH7005 has set screw terminals for power, ground, turn-on (REM), and speaker outputs. The power and ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire (recommended), and the turn-on and speaker outputs will accept up to 10-gauge wire. The set screws are loosened/tightened with one of the supplied Allen wrenches, 2mm or 4mm.

External Fuse: The amplifier does not include a built-in fuse, therefore an external fuse should be placed on the power wire, within 18" of the battery. It is recommended that a 4-gauge amplifier wiring kit and a 100-amp external fuse be used when installing the amplifier.

Input Signal: The amp has three pair of RCA inputs that accept line-level and speaker-level inputs. When using a speaker-level input signal, an optional speaker wire to RCA adapter is recommended.

2Ω Stable: Each of the speaker outputs is capable of handling load impedances down to 2Ω (4Ω bridged).

Wired Remote: The included external bass control (EBC) wired remote gives you control of the subwoofer channel output level within reach of the driver's seat.

EBC Dimensions:

  • Width: 2" (2.9" including the mounting tabs)
  • Height: 0.95"
  • Depth: 1.67" (2.42" including knob and wiring)
