Speakers for the real world

MTX doesn't make speakers that only deliver the goods in a sound lab. This Thunder51 component system features a 5-1/4” durable polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround that'll shrug off the weather and wear that come with living in your car full-time. You can swivel the 1-3/16" soft dome tweeter up to 15 degrees in your direction to really dial in the stereo imaging across your dash, and MTX includes hardware to flush- or surface-mounting.

The included crossover network features 2-level tweeter adjustment for fine-tuned sound staging. And while no car speaker can produce bass like a large subwoofer, the Thunder51 woofers truly shine in the lower frequencies. With up to 90 watts RMS of power handling, you can add to their impressive depth and richness when you power them with an outboard amplifier. MTX's 2-year warranty makes these Thunder51 speakers a smart buy.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Great Sounding Components!

Until recently I only purchased MTX sub woofers and amplifiers. I have always been a Kenwood guy when it comes to head units and car speakers but I thought I would give the MTX a try for the bass response. I wasn't disappointed! Granted these are only 5 inch component speakers but they produce quality bass for what you would expect in a smaller speaker. I was a little concerned about how the tweeters would sound but once installed the clarity is amazing. The highs aren't ear piercing but soft and clean. The only reason I didn't give the MTX Thunder 51's five stars was because the crossover unit is enormous. Luckily for me I didn't have to use the crossover unit because my Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a factory amplifier that has crossovers built-in. I purchased the MTX thunder 61's for the rear of my vehicle but I haven't installed them yet. I'm still trying to find a place to mount the gigantic crossover. I would recommend the MTX thunder 51s to anyone.

Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Large Crossover

completely satisfied with the sound and quality of this speaker's. I am running after market deck and amplifier. Have a Kenwood amplifier at 360 wats for the door speakers could upgrade amplifier for more power. I am maxing out the volume and still sounds very clean and loud with good clean bass for door speakers if you need more or deeper bass then you'll need a subwoofer. I have two subwoofers and a amplifier that I will be installing to complete the package. very much recommend these speaker's. :)

Pros: outstanding speakers at a good price. shipping and handling fast on time and free. very satisfied

Cons: installing the crossover and tweeter can be a bit more work than you would like. may need to cut your door panel to make room for Twitter add more speaker wire and figure out where to mount crossover.

great sound all around. I have Two subs in back, components front and back with a Sony deck. One amp for the subs and a MTX amp for the front and back components. Sounds are outstanding in my PT Cruiser. MTX really works well. The crossovers are a little bigger than most but work great. All are MTX.

Pros: Great sound. Easy put in.

Cons: Crossovers a little big.

Great speakers, the crossover was bigger than expected and wouldn't fit on the door of my car. Had to be installed inside. Packaging and delivery was great.

Pros: Sound loud, fit great, easy to install with aftermarket sterio.

Cons: Will not work with Mach 460 system need it's own amp. Recommend professional install do to more wires to run.

I feel for the money these are decent component speakers. I need to update the head unit in my car if I want more bass/lows. The warranty cannot be beat and for the price I feel they are a decent investment.

Pros: Crisp and clear sounds mids/highs

Cons: not enough lows for my taste

Put in my 2003 Chevy Silverado and sound awesome! I put the tweeter just above the hand crank for window. Mounted the tweeter flush looks nice. The bass speaker fit in the attachment that came with shipping. Really nice speakers!

Pros: Awesome sound, used the precut box to draw template

Cons: Can be difficult to install without nice cutting tool. (Dremel, etc.)

Product Research

Features

Woofer Cones: The MTX Thunder Series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be flush mounted or surface mounted using the included hardware. Once installed in either housing, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 2.235" 1.967" 0.318" 0.706"
Surface Mount 2.2" N/A 1.035" 0.64" (Screw Depth)

Crossovers: The crossover inputs and outputs are set screw terminals; they accept bare wire up to 10 gauge. There are two positive tweeter outputs, offering flat and -3dB output options. The screw terminals have 2mm Allen heads, and are recessed slightly more than half an inch, so a standard Allen head bit for a screw driver will not fit (an Allen wrench is not included). The crossover point is 4 kHz, the high pass slope is 18 dB/octave and the low pass slope is 6 dB/octave.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 4-15/16"
  • Height: 1-3/8"
  • Depth: 3-1/8"

Q
I am having difficulty trying to figure out should I go with 5-1/4 " for both my doors and rear deck in my challenger, or 5-1/4 in the door and 6-1/2" in the rear deck?
