A versatile, affordable phono preamp

The audio experts at iFi packed their affordable ZEN Phono turntable preamp with some cool features you don't usually see at this price point. It has selectable gain that lets you use a wide array of moving coil and moving magnet cartridges, and an AI subsonic filter that intelligently removes rumble without sacrificing bass response.

In addition to unbalanced stereo RCA inputs and outputs, it offers a 4.4mm balanced output that lets you connect to a compatible amp or powered speakers for the cleanest possible sound. (The iFi ZEN CAN headphone amp would be a good match, for example.)

Product Research

Features

Overview: The ZEN Phono preamplifier joins other products in the affordable ZEN line of products from iFi Audio. With vinyl technology that has been passed down from AMR/iFi, the ZEN Phono brings out the best in your vinyl recordings. The input accepts both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, and has four gain settings to match the preamp to your cartridge. In addition to the standard stereo RCA output, the ZEN Phono has a 4.4mm (Pentaconn) balanced output that is ideal for amplifiers with a balanced input. The ZEN Phono comes with a DC 5V power supply, and an RCA patch cable.

MM / MC Cartridges: The ZEN Phono is compatible with both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. It can handle cartridges with output voltages from less than 0.25mV to over 2mV. The rear panel Gain Switch has four positions to choose from. LEDs on the front panel indicate the selected Gain Switch setting. The four available gain settings include:

Gain Switch Position Input Impedance Cartridge Output Gain Required (±1dB)
MM 47K Ohms >2mV 36dB
MC High 47K Ohms 0.5mV - 2mV 48dB
MC Low 1.4K Ohms 0.25mV - 0.5mV 60dB
MC V-low 110 Ohms < 0.25mV 72dB

Balanced Output: The ZEN Phono offers a 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced output, which has less noise and less crosstalk than the RCA single-ended output. The balanced output has a high output of 13.5V RMS, with an output impedance of 200Ω, compared to 6.5V and 100Ω for the single-ended (RCA) output.

Subsonic Filter: The ZEN Phono's AI Subsonic Filter can tell the difference between a bass note and a low frequency sound caused by a warp in the record. Using iFi technology developed in 2012, this "intelligent" filter will eliminate the warp rumble without causing phase issues or affecting the bass and mid-range frequencies. The Subsonic Filter can be engaged through the front panel switch.

Power Supply: The ZEN Phono comes with a 5V DC power supply. For best performance, iFi recommends upgrading to the optional iFi iPower 5V ultra-quiet power supply.

Rear Panel Connections: The rear panel has the following connections:

  • Balanced Output: 4.4mm Pentacon connector
  • Single-ended Output: Stereo RCA
  • Phono Ground: for turntable ground wire - accepts bare wire, spade lug, or banana plug
  • Input: Stereo RCA
  • DC 5V Input: DC barrel jack for power supply

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response:
    • Balanced: 20Hz - 20kHz (±0.15dB)
    • S-E (Single-ended): 10Hz - 100kHz (±0.4dB)
  • Channel Separation: > 75dB (1 kHz all modes)
  • Input Voltage: DC 5V / 0.5A, AC 100-240V, 50/60Hz (w/included power supply)
  • Max Output Voltage RMS:
    • Balanced: 13.5V RMS 600R (<1% THD+N)
    • S-E: 6.5V RMS 600R (<1% THD+N)
