About the CRUX ACP-WL Wireless Apple CarPlay® Interface

Go with wireless Apple CarPlay

If you've got a factory or aftermarket car stereo that includes wired Apple CarPlay, CRUX's ACP-WL interface lets you convert it to wireless CarPlay. Simply plug the interface into the stereo's CarPlay-compatible USB port, wait for confirmation on the stereo's display, and switch it on through the Bluetooth® settings in your iPhone®. And bingo, you're good to go wirelessly. The ACP-WL will remember your settings when you hop back in your vehicle. The ACP-WL interface works with any factory radio with wired Apple CarPlay, and with any radios with wired Apple CarPlay made by Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Jensen, Boss, Dual, Axxera, and Stinger.

Simple integration

"So now when I hop in my 2017 VW and don't need a charge, I don't even have to get my phone out of my pocket to use CarPlay. This interface also features a USB pass-through port. I leave my iPhone's Lightning® cable in the car in case I decide I need a charge, and when plugged in, the wired CarPlay re-syncs and takes over. It's a great piece that I think our customers will love.”

— Darren, Crutchfield Vehicle Integration Buyer

Wired or wireless

This CRUX solution includes the hideaway interface and the USB-A to USB-C plug to connect to your stereo's USB input. The ACP-WL includes a pass-through USB port, so you can switch back to wired CarPlay by connecting your iPhone using a Lightning® cable to keep your battery charged. If you want to stay wireless, you may want to consider a wireless Qi charger to help keep your iPhone's battery replenished.

Compatibility note: This interface is currently not compatible with Sony car stereos.

Q
Will this work with the BOSS BCPA9RC system?
[ Cam  Apr 18, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
The BOSS BCPA9RC is a model that we do not carry, therefore we haven't tested this adapter on that specific radio model. We reached out to both Boss and Crux to check compatibility. This adapter has not been tested on this model yet and neither Boss nor Crux could confirm that the ACP-WL Wireless Apple CarPlay® Interface was compatible with the BOSS BCPA9RC.

[ M  Apr 05, 2022 ]

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
Will this help keep my phone connected to bluetooth for phone functions? When I plug into carplay my bluetooth disconnects and I have to talk through speaker on my phone. I don't have to do that when not connected to carplay.
[ Desi  Apr 04, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
CarPlay uses Bluetooth for some of its connection. If you're in CarPlay, you do everything phone related within CarPlay - calls, texts, etc. You can't be connected to CarPlay and Bluetooth at the same time

[ John  Mar 30, 2022 ]

If the cable is long enough for you to do that and you can route it from a hole in your glovebox from the USB port then yes you can. You may want to consider the cooling of the unit since it is in an enclosed area but It doesn't get that hot.
[ STEVE A A  Mar 30, 2022 ]

You likely could, but the USB cable may be visible leading from the console to inside your glovebox.

Q
Wifi and car internet? I have a 21 Ford Expedition with factory radio. Other units require WiFi and this disables the monthly internet service I pay for. Does this system work solely on Bluetooth and allow me to keep my cellular service in vehicle?
[ Dave  Mar 26, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
This unit has nothing to do with your car's Wi-Fi service. It will not affect any cellular plans etc. This unit has it's own transmitter that independently connects to your iPhone. Wireless CarPlay (WCP) works as follows: Your iPhone establishes a temporary Bluetooth connection to the WCP unit. The WCP unit quickly passes the connection back to the iPhone using a dedicated Wi-Fi signal. The Bluetooth connection is released. The iPhone maintains a quasi-permanent connection to WCP unit via this newly established Wi-Fi connection. You may occasionally experience a reconnect failure when entering your vehicle if your then current Wi-Fi connection is still active and the Wi-Fi from the WCP can't override that current connection. Simply disconnect from that Wi-Fi and retry connection the the WCP unit. Hope this helps!

Q
How is the sound quality compared to wired?
[ shawn  Mar 06, 2022 ]
3 answers
A
Anything wired will of course be better. I am by no means an audiophile and it is fine by me. The biggest issue for me is the delay when pausing and skipping tracks and such. You can get the same thing on the big online retailer for less. I returned it, not comfortable that fact but because I thought that it might not disable my phones WiFi like the other options. But it does.
[ JOHN  Mar 07, 2022 ]
A
I don't notice much of a difference in sound quality. But anytime you get an answer for that question, you should take it with a grain of salt. Everybody hears sound differently. What I can tell you for sure is that occasionally there are connection issues. And there is a lag in response when it comes to CarPlay functions, i.e. when you hit play or next on songs.
[ Mathew  Mar 06, 2022 ]
A
Sound was good. My only issue was lag time while using Waze

Q
Will this work with the Sony XAV-AX1000? Has it been tested? I tried the Carlinkit & Ottocast and there there's no sound, screen is sometimes too wide, apps only run when manually pressed and Siri doesn't work or work properly.
[ MacResearch  Jan 28, 2022 ]
2 answers
A
Most likely not. I have a Sony XAV-AX7000 and have had no luck with almost a dozen different adapters. For this particular CRUX ACP-WL I was told it should work but it did not. My iphone 13 Pro saw and connected via bluetooth with the adapter but the AX7000 did not connect with it. There were a couple of times where I saw Carplay come on the screen but it just froze. After a dozen attempts, I gave up and returned it. I wanted to update the firmware for the ACP via the IP but I couldn't get the password to initiate it.
[ STEVE A A  Feb 03, 2022 ]

It connects and works as advertised. No issues. Very pleased with its operation.

From all I have read about this unit just about any OEM wired CarPlay unit will work. If your unit is OEM I would expect this to be plug and play. I use mine with an aftermarket Boss head unit and it works very well. Boss was listed as compatible for the aftermarket units.

I have the DDX 99003s that has a Usb input. I plugged it into that and it connects every time. So as long as you have the input and CarPlay on the stereo's OS then you should be golden!
[ AARON  Dec 16, 2021 ]
A
No not everything. This adapter is for CarPlay support on stereos that do not have a wireless CarPlay option. So only what CarPlay will allow you to use. Music, podcasts and navigation mostly. I have yet to run into any CarPlay compatible apps that will allow you to play video. There is texting capability. But it is limited to your CarPlay app reading your texts to you and you dictating text to it.

Does this work for a 2015 Honda Accord touring?
[ Michael  Aug 26, 2021 ]

The stock radio must support wired Apple CarPlay for this to work and change it to wireless Apple CarPlay. We did not find that in a 2015 Accord and the vehicle brochure does not mention that being an option. We do not expect this will work with the stock radio. It can work with a compatible aftermarket Apple CarPlay receiver installed in the car

My opinion this will not work for you as this is only adapter for wireless less connection between iPhone and radio. Radio need to be outfitted with CarPlay. However please call advisor regarding this issue. I didn't install this module as is not compatible with my radio. Regards Jacek

This only converts wired CarPlay to wireless. If your car doesn't currently have Apple CarPlay, this will not add it to your radio.

Hi, I have a pioneer aftermarket head unit and it does work with my oem steering wheel controls. I have had issues with the dongle randomly disconnecting and restarting. But that seems to be a common issue.

This adapter does not work on the factory radio of a 2017 Lexus RX 450H however we do have another adapter available that adds Apple CarPlay & Android Auto to some of the 2017 RX 450H models. We need to know a little more about your car to determine if it will be compatible. Give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and we'll be happy to check into it!

If your car has wired carplay installed, it should work. It's currently working on my 2018 Mercedes S450, but takes about 20 seconds to connect. You also may want to disconnect after you turn the car off. I left mine plugged in, and now my car is saying my auxiliary battery is malfunctioning.

Will this device add wired CarPlay to a 2012-2015 Tacoma with a non-JBL factory stereo?

A
If your display unit does not have Apple CarPlay, this device will not add that capability. This unit acts as an interface to provide wireless capability to a vehicle display with Apple CarPlay.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

If that factory radio has Apple CarPlay, then yes. This device does not provide Apple CarPlay, it is an interface giving it wireless Apple CarPlay capability.

I have a BOSS aftermarket stereo. And it works amazing. After reading about it (and this radio wasn't listed), is that if you have wired CarPlay, this will adapt it to wireless, and it works amazingly. The only time I have e seen it act up is when I disconnected CarPlay without turning the radio/car off. Locks the BOSS stereo up. But a power/ignition cycle fixes it. I love not having wires everywhere.

I have mine on a Boss receiver and it works fine. Sometimes won't connect properly but I found that was usually because I has switched off of CapPlay for some reason. But it does work for me.

This is not rated to work with Boss receivers. It can work with Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, Sony, and Alpine radios.

It should work, but there may be syncing issues. I ran into syncing issues with my 2020 Mazda CX-5 display. During use the Apple CarPlay would freeze due to syncing issue.
