Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Features

Rear-View Camera: The Crux CUB-01 rear-view camera can be installed in a variety of vehicles with an aftermarket in-dash multimedia or navigation receiver installed. Your aftermarket receiver must feature an integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. The camera allows you to view what's behind you on your in-dash receiver's video monitor when you put your vehicle in reverse.

Note: The Crux CUB-01 rear-view camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Image Sensor & Lens: The Crux CUB-01 rear-view camera features a CCD image sensor that offers 480 lines of resolution. The bright f/1.2 lens has 170° (horizontal) x 90° (vertical) viewing angle. The minimum illumination is 0.4 Lux.

Park Assist Lines: The rear-view camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of your vehicle's in-dash aftermarket monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also 3 color-coded horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot - Green (Clear), Yellow (Getting Close), Red (Very Close).

Note: You can remove the Park Assist Lines by cutting the two exposed white wires on the camera's cable.

Waterproof Housing: The Crux CUB-01 rear-view camera features a IP67 waterproof housing.

Flush-Mount Installation: You will need to drill a 3/4" (18.5mm) hole in your vehicle's rear exterior panel. A hole-saw bit is included. The rear-view camera mounts in this opening and features an integrated spring-loaded mounting bracket which secures the camera in place.

Note: Make sure you have the camera orientated correctly so the image is displayed correctly on your receiver's screen.

Connections: The rear-view camera features an attached 4' power/signal cable and comes with a 27' video cable with attached 3' power/ground wires. At the end of the video cable is a male RCA composite video plug, which connects to the composite, rear-view camera input of your head unit. The power (red) & ground (black) wires will need to be hardwired. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the +12V accessory wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to be connected to your vehicle's metal chassis.

Q
what is the red wire at the rca plug on the Crux Cub 01 for? will this work with the Sony XAV AX1000 HEAD UNIT?
[ Remigijus  Aug 07, 2021 ]
3 answers
A
I didn't used red wire B , i think it can be connect to constant 12v point in vehicle for camera always ON , but you must not connect red A on reverse light circuit in order for red wire B to work. Only 1 connect not both, either camera constant on or ON when reversed.
[ Loi  Aug 10, 2021 ]
A
It can be used as the power wire that gives the camera power instead of using the power wire that is closer to the camera. This is helpful when wanting to access the camera when the vehicle is not in reverse
[ Paul  Aug 09, 2021 ]  Staff
A
The red wire connects to one of the wires coming out of the head unit (should be a pigtail out of the harness) that is labeled for the rear camera. It causes the head unit to switch the screen to the camera feed when you go into reverse. From what i saw, the Sony ax1000 has rear camera capability

Q
Have you had any experience using this camera on older model BMW's (2001) with factory backup camera option?
[ Hannibal  Jul 20, 2021 ]
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

How is this camera in the rain? Does the picture ever get fuzzy?
[ Joshua  Feb 22, 2020 ]

A
No different than any other camera, water will distort the image
[ Tim  Feb 24, 2020 ]
A
Yes if surface mounted without any protection from above the lens.

Q
I purchased a Crux Cub-01 camera and Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX multimedia receiver and want know if I should cut the white loop wire on the camera harness? I assume that the white wire is cut because the pioneer receiver can produce and adjust the guidelines.
[ Jack  Jan 17, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
I don't have that particular receiver so I don't know if it can produce its own guidelines but when installing my camera I didn't attach the white wire to anything and still had guidelines. The best thing to do is to connect everything while the receiver is outside of the dash and test out the camera.
[ Michael  Jan 18, 2020 ]
A
no I like the lines from the camera better then what the radio offers . but i got a sony
[ sam  Jan 18, 2020 ]
Q
Can this unit be ran as a front facing camera?
[ Wesley  Jan 08, 2020 ]

A
Yes it can
[ Candice  Jan 08, 2020 ]
A
Yes it can
[ Jeremy  Jan 08, 2020 ]
A
I can't see why not. If you can run the wire, it'll produce video.
[ Matt  Jan 08, 2020 ]
Q
Can the parking lines be adjusted?
[ Steve  Jan 04, 2020 ]
5 answers
A
They can be adjusted in and out but not side-to-side. They won't help much for keeping within a lane unless you have the camera exactly centered, but at least you can set the distance to keep from hitting things.
[ Mark  Jan 09, 2020 ]
A
No. Had to use my head unit for that
[ Thomas Randolph  Jan 06, 2020 ]
A
No, they can be removed
[ I  Jan 04, 2020 ]
A
No
[ Daniel  Jan 04, 2020 ]
A
Don't think the lines are adjustable on the camera, but i have a kenwood stereo, and they are adjustable through it.
[ RUSSELL  Jan 04, 2020 ]
Q
Is the lens on this product made of glass or plastic?
[ Derek  Aug 07, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
It's glass. I have two and am pleased with them.
[ EDWARD  Aug 07, 2019 ]
Q
What diameter is the hole for this camera?
[ LUKE (LOUIS B,III)  Jun 14, 2019 ]
4 answers
A
The camera specs are 7/8x7/8x7/8. Use an 18.5mm saw bit for hole. Crutchfield normally supplies the saw bit in the box when you receive it.
[ Lawrence  Jun 26, 2019 ]
A
The camera measures 0.732", but they give you a 18.5 mm hole saw to make the hole.
[ Stanley  Jun 26, 2019 ]
A
I dont recall exactly, but the supplied bit did nothing on a metal bumper. I drilled starter hole then used a step bit until snug fit was acquired.
[ David  Jun 26, 2019 ]
A
The camera comes with a 7/8 hole saw, which is the od of the camera, this saw is just useless, if you're drilling metal it will break, and it's too small in diameter, you will need a 1inch hole saw to fit it perfectly!! my camera still works as new.
[ Jose  Jun 26, 2019 ]
Q
Can you adjust the angle of this camera?
[ Matt  Feb 25, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
You adjust the angle of the camera body. The lens has a 170 horizontal and 90 degree vertical view which should give you full coverage even with a less than optical angle. If you have questions or want to look at cameras that can adjust you can connect with one of our Product Advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

Q
I want to add this camera to a 2014 ram truck without existing camer installed. I have an aftermarket Kenwood multimedia receiver. Will this camera fit the tailgate handle oem position?
[ Jon  Feb 23, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
I'm sorry but I'm not sure about the dodge I ended up switching cameras because I was going to have to purchase a 390 dollar adapter to make this one work with factory screen. Went to one that just plugged into a port in the rear of the truck and is ready to go. Camera was 250 but about 15 min to hook up and nothing else required
