Our take on the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (DC)

We've always been super-impressed with Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon turntable. We think it's one of the best values out there for enjoying the warm, natural sound of vinyl. And judging by our customers' overwhelmingly positive reviews, they feel the same way we do.

A great performer just got even better

We've always been super-impressed with Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon turntable. We think it's one of the best values out there for enjoying the warm, natural sound of vinyl. And judging by our customers' overwhelmingly positive reviews, they feel the same way we do.

So when we found out that Pro-Ject was updating the Carbon's design, we were more than a little skeptical. Why mess with success, right? Well, we needn't have worried. The experts at Pro-Ject kept all of the key elements that made the Carbon so great, and added a couple of significant tweaks to make it even better.

What's new with the Carbon (DC)?

The first thing Pro-Ject did was to give the Debut Carbon (DC) a new power supply with a precision built-in frequency generator (like their Speed Box) — increasing the turntable's speed stability while decreasing unwanted motor vibration. This extra degree of accuracy and smoothness gives you a more focused stereo image, tighter bass, and greater detail than before. Then, Pro-Ject added new TPE (ThermoPlastic Elastomer) dampers to the motor mounts to better decouple and isolate it from the 'table's chassis, reducing motor noise and rumble to a bare minimum. The result is a turntable that delivers sonic performance rarely found on models in its price range.

Crafted for serious sound

The Debut Carbon (DC)'s one-piece carbon fiber tonearm provides greatly increased stiffness compared to typical aluminum tonearms, while reducing unwanted resonance that colors sound. The turntable's sturdy MDF chassis rests on shock absorbing rubber feet that provide a solid, low-resonance foundation. Its heavy 12" steel platter spins on a precision axle and bearing for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The belt drive system and new TPE motor mounts isolate the motor's vibration from the chassis to prevent noise from being transferred to the cartridge, and on to your amplifier and speakers.

Get the best sound, without the hassle

Pro-Ject knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the Debut Carbon (DC) comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force and anti-skating, are all it takes to get this player primed and ready to deliver spacious, detailed music. If you've never experienced the relaxed sound that vinyl is famous for, what are you waiting for?

Beautiful sound and looks

Keith from La Porte, TX on 11/29/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just set this up 1-1/2 hours ago. Can't stop listening. I upgraded from a Denon DP29F. What a difference! I'm super impressed with the sound quality and it was a piece of cake to set-up. I did a lot of research before I chose this one. You can spend a lot more on a turntable but I don't know why you should. This thing in gloss white is gorgeous. I need to get used to a manual operation since my Denon was automatic but the better quality turntables are manual.

Pros: Easy set-up, great sound, beautiful white gloss finish, good value.

Cons: None.

Great Value

Tom from OCEAN VIEW on 11/8/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Appearance: Very good-looking in a somewhat conservative style. Set-up: Easy. There are YouTube videos that show exactly how to do it. Build Quality: The factory got everything exactly right. Including cartridge alignment and stylus azimuth. Operation: Nothing automatic, but the cueing lever and tonearm damping make make manual operation easy and virtually foolproof. Noise: The motor is virtually silent, and hum through the speakers is not audible. Sound quality: My speakers are twenty years old and have been used with many combinations of equipment. This Pro-Ject turntable has made me realize that my speakers are much better than I had thought. LPs sound better than ever. A few nitpicks. The documentation says nothing about several important details. (You can find information on the Pro-Ject website.) 1. Transport screws. The motor is held down with a pair of screws. They should be removed or loosened. If not, the motor suspension will be ineffective. 2. RCA cables. Pro-Ject provides high quality cables. However, they have yellow clips at one end and no explanation is provided. The end with the yellow clips connects to the turntable. 3. Lubrication. The platter bearing requires occasional lubrication. Pro-Ject sells "Lube It" for this purpose. Bottom Line: The Pro-Ject Carbon Debut DC is a great value. For under $500, I doubt if there's anything better. Unless everything else in your system is really high-end, I see no point in spending more mon

Always have use the 100-120 dollar turntables.... WOW what I have been missing out on clarity all these years...reviews can not explain the first time you hear your vinyl on a piece of equipment that's designed for sound quality....there is a rabbit hole of upgrades and options that can follow ....but the record player alone really is great....the arm does not return at the end of play...this is a hands on listener experience...(they do make after market items to lift the arm)

Pros: Plays like a super high end model for half the cost

Cons: A little old school with the anti skate weight and manual arm...but for some it is part of the experience

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with the tt. The first thing to note is that it is a manual tt - the only button is the on-off switch. You must do everything else. So I place the stylus on the record then turn it on; once done, I turn the power off then lift the arm to return it to its rest. Watch the video to set it up - then it is simple. Note the order in adjusting the weight and anti-skate. The Ortofon 2 Red is a decent enough stylus. I picked up an electronic tracking force gauge - handy to have. To echo someone else's comments, I would ignore all complaints. One complaint was that it picks up feedback - I was thus worried, but I get none with the tt sitting next to Infinity Kappa 8.1s powered by 120 watts per channel from a Sansui G8000 receiver (on oak flooring over a cement pad). I have not really cranked it, so if the volume is really loud, feedback may be an issue (but then so might the police). Another complaint was that the counter weight can come out of its notch - perhaps they improved this, but no problem so far, as you are not quickly moving the arm. (The line seems to have been kinked in that case.) Yet another was that the tone arm clip is insufficient. While it has a clip of sorts to hold it in place, it is sufficient. To move the tt, put a twist tie to lock it in place. The one concern was that the felt mat would easily turn on a fixed platter. I thought that this might make cleaning records difficult, but it was not a problem in practice

Pros: - clean, crisp sound - easy to set up - decent cartridge, already set up - nice looking unit

Cons: - none

Curse of the anti skate weight

Jody from Derby, KS on 8/23/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great and the sound is amazing. I paired it with a Cambridge audio phono amp from Crutchfield. But..... My biggest complaint is one that seems to be extremely common-the anti skate weight is extremely frustrating. It's frustrating enough to move it from 5 to 2 stars. The small monofilament string attached to the weight was kinked at the loop, and it kept falling off when I was installing it. It continues to randomly fall off, which is a big problem. Seems the small grooves on the tonearm either aren't deep enough to keep the line in place, or the angle of the hook is wrong. It's frustrating enough that I am considering returning it. I should have listened to my "gut" when I read some of the reviews that mentioned this. For this price, the mechanism should be more solid.

Pros: Everything except the anti skate weight

Cons: ANTI SKATE WEIGHT MECHANISM IS JUST BAD. There needs to be Something near the grooves or they need to be deeper. The weight swings when you move the tone arm, and when it gains a little momentum, it falls off..... a lot!!!!

Quality turn table for a good price

Crutchfield customer from Ashland, MA on 8/21/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first turn table but so far I have been enjoying it immensely. It's very sturdy and well built so I have not had any trouble with vibrations. Setup is generally easy and Crutchfield has videos that are helpful. The sound from the Ortofon Red needle is pretty good for an entry level cartridge. Overall this worth the money if you are looking for a solid turn table to start a vinyl collection with.

Pros: Easy setup, Ortofon Red needle is a servicible cartridge to start with. Vinyl sounds great!

Cons: Would be great if the arm automatically returned at the end of the record but it's not a deal breaker.

The turntable looks perfect, was packed perfectly and when I needed help getting my receiver connected that was awesome as well. I have been stalking crutchfields site for years and finally made a purchase. So far, so good!

Pros: Set up was easy Scratch and dent looks perfect Tech help was awesome

Exactly what I wanted. Well made, operates smoothly, sounds great, looks good. The only nitpick, is that the cartridge does not always capture the full liveliness of some recordings (I can always upgrade this, if I feel the need). The cartridge captures detail nicely. Very pleased, thus far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had several Turntables which I gave them away to my kids. The sound quality of Pro-Ject is far superior to my Sony and Audio-Technica brands which I owned previously. As a mid-range turntable, I consider Pro-Ject a great choice for the money.

Pros: Good price. Good sound quality Quality build

Cons: Poor instructions on how to properly setup the turntable.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a new turntable with the help of the Crutchfield staff. Received the new turntable and found the set up to be easy but I needed assistance to get the exact balance and tracking of the tone arm. The tech sent me a video and after a new minutes the set up was complete. One suggestion is to put the turntable on a wood surface. I elevated the wooden surface over the receiver by about an inch and it made a big difference. Listening to records almost every day.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Debut Carbon by Pro-Ject is a great turntable for those that want a simple setup without too many bells and whistles. Setup did not take long (there are several videos on Youtube that can guide you through setup), and I was listening to my records within 20 minutes of opening the box. The carbon fiber tonearm is great with no noise...others had mentioned that there is resonance from the tonearm, but I have not noticed this at all in the week that I have been using it. There is also no hum from the motor, and the included platter has a nice heavy weight. I have no complaints with the included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge...these sell for around $100+ on their own, so it is a nice bonus that it is included. Everything on this feels and looks very well made. The only con I can think of involves switching speeds between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM. In order to do this, you have to remove the platter and manually shift the belt to a different spindle. While this is not very difficult to accomplish, it might be a bit of an annoyance to those who enjoy listening to 45s, and they might be better suited for the Pro-Ject Esprit model, which has a button for speed control. I would recommend this turntable to anyone who is new to vinyl records. Packaging and delivery from Crutchfield was on point as well.

Pros: Simple design - well made Ortofon Red Cartridge Tonearm

Cons: Manual speed change

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I switched from a "vintage" turntable to this Project Carbon I instantly understood what people meant when they said Vinyl sounded better. It is a completely different experience. The texture and separation of each instrument is. Incredible. Each recording is like an theme park ride rather than a static piece of material. The vocals are fuller and warm. The bass is thicker and the top end is clean and crisp, never harsh or crackled. Setup is straight forward and enjoyable. The pieces are extremely high quality and the table is absolutely gorgeous. I could not recommend the table any more. It has been the most enjoyable purchase I've made in years, one that completely blew away my expectations. Buy it here for fast shipping, excellent packaging, competitive price, and good stock levels. (Black is hard to find) For the price it's not beatable.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (DC)

Crutchfield customer from Roanoke, VA on 2/8/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Debut Carbon is a good turntable because it produces high-quality, undistorted sound. Saying that, the turntable's job is to spin the platter at a constant speed. It's the cartridge with its stylus that produces the actual sound and Pro-Ject had the good sense to pair the Debut Carbon with an Ortofon 2M Red. The Debut Carbon operates smoothly and quietly and the Ortofon Red produces a clean, transparent sound. The cue lever is dampened and operates perfectly. The Debut Carbon has gold-plated RCA jacks, allowing easy RCA cable replacement, not a necessity, but definitely a nice feature. More importantly, the Debut Carbon has an Earth Ground, which is essential to avoiding hum. It would be nice if the Debut Carbon had a power on LED indicator. The anti-skate weight is functional, but technologically unsophisticated for such a nice turntable. Before purchasing I read numerous reviews where the setup instructions were criticized. I would agree that the instructions for tonearm balancing and adjustment could be clearer for the factory-installed cartridge. However, there are several helpful online videos to supplement the written instructions. Though it sounds good out of the box, give it five or more hours of play and the Ortofon 2M Red shines.

Pros: Sleek, contemporary design. High quality finish. Paired with an excellent cartridge. Earth ground. Dampened cue lever. Gold-plated RCA jacks.

Cons: No power on LED. Felt mat could be higher quality. Anti-skate system functional but antiquated. Setup instructions need clarity for tonearm balancing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to get back into vinyl after 35+ years. After much research, decided on the Pro-ject Debut Carbon. It hits the sweet spot between price and performance. Picked one up as a scratch & dent and can't see where it is scratched or dented. Anyway, cleaned up some old records and bought some new ones. Bottom line, this sounds great!! You get the warmth and detail you can't hear on CD's or streaming services. The better your equipment, the better it will sound. I give this my highest recommendation!

Pros: Performance Price - especially if you can get a scratch & dent! Easy setup

Cons: Manual return - get a Q-Up - problem solved!

Beautiful turntable with warm and vibrant sound. Each element of the turntable feels really high end (I yearn for all the switches in my house to have the feel and sound of the power switch on this turntable). I was completely new to the world of turntables and spent a lot of time researching within budget and I am so pleased with this purchase. Cruchfield gave me the right information to make my decision, thank you!

I just got mine today ... a red one, it was very easy to set up; even the tracking weight was easier than I thought it would be. So far, I am loving this table, and I own 3 other good TT's: a Denon, a Technics and a Pioneer. This one is going to be a favorite; I can just tell!

Pros: Love the way it tracks and sounds

Cons: It would be nice to have auto return.

Great Only After Cartridge Upgrade

Crutchfield customer from Nothern, VA on 12/14/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am rating this TT at 4, but in reality it's more like 3.5. First, I'll get to all the good things I like about the Debut Carbon DC. The fit and finish is well done and would suggest a high quality build. I upgraded from a TT that had RFI issues and static/buzzing from the motor - there was no ground lug on my former TT, what an oversight. I am using this TT with a Schiit Mani pre-amp and there is no RFI or motor noise whatsoever, it's very quite. Now to the not so good. As many have mentioned, the anti-skate is a pain to set up, though thus far I am not having any issues with it working. The dust cover is slightly skewed to one side, nothing major but I've had lesser TT's with better QC. Now, the most important but most subjective part - sound quality. After playing several albums, I concluded that the sound was too sterile for me. Reminded me more of digital music than the old fashioned sound from the 70's. The sound was articulate but lacked 'life' for a lack of a better term. I replaced the cartridge with a Nagaoka MP-110. This completely changed the sound. I now get a warmer sound, slightly more low end and seemlingly better separation. Piano and electric guitar has that warm fuzzy glow to its sound, if that makes sense. Overall, I am pleased with the Debut Carbon DC, but only after I upgraded the cartridge.

Pros: Well built, Quiet

Cons: Did Not Like Stock Cartridge

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am getting back into vinyl after about a 25 year break and this turntable is a great re-entry point. It is a totally manual unit but that is what I actually prefer as it is obvious that the engineering has gone into quality sound performance rather than add-ons that I don't need. My albums sound just as good as I remember them from all those years ago. 5 out of 5.

Terry from Wilsonville, OR on 8/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clearly a better sounding turntable than the Technics SL-1400 that I have been using (which sounded better than another Technics I had). Better bass with a bigger, more open soundstage. Not the best build quality and I'm not certain that the speed is not without a warble here and there BUT I wanted better sound and I got it. I might go for the Espirit which has the speed box and upgraded platter but for now, I'll just enjoy the improved sound. Oh yeah, just like most others say, the supplied interconnects produced major hum that went away when I swapped another set in there. Seems odd that these turntables would ship with lousy cables.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: poor cables

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow. Precisely engineered, extremely quiet, super-cool design - the Debut Carbon exceeded my expectations. So much fun to drop the tone arm and...like I said - WOW. I bought the red model and it just makes the listening ritual satisfying and fun. Love, love love.

Pros: Great looks, very quiet (the carbon fiber arm really reduces audio artifacts), solid platform.

Cons: Switching speeds seems a little clumsy - an "auto off" switch would be nice. The anti-skate set up is also a little difficult.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great turntable. The instructions are little rough if you are new to setting up a turntable; YouTube has many excellent videos on how to set it up. I suggest using one of those videos rather than struggling to decipher the instructions. This is also a fully manual turntable. No auto-return. I think that is part of the charm; your mileage may vary. Old records sound great and the turntable itself is designed very tastefully. I highly recommend it.

A Great Deal on Really Good Sound!

Robert from Glen Allen, VA on 7/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Among the many here who are replacing their old Acoustic Research table with this one. I had no illusions about what owning a FULLY MANUAL turntable means. Hey, why do vinyl in the first place unless you are willing to put a little work in for better, deeper warmer sound? The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is a GREAT table for this price. The inclusion of the Ortofon 2M Red sealed the deal. Quiet operation and steady speed means you get exactly what you are hoping for - music and not muttering and groaning from the turntable. It appears to be a STATIC NOISE MAGNET with the standard felt table pad, so I am looking for something to replace it with. It is hard to imagine a better balance between price and performance. I highly recommend this table and its very good cartridge. NOTE - Yes, the anti-skating device IS a pain in the butt to set up. The key is to set the extremely fine monofilament line completely into the machined slot. Gently run your finger (or a toothpick) around the stem to seat as much of the line as possible into the slot - it will not stay if it is just fitted at the edge. NOTE TO PRO-JECT - a square anti-skate post would help here.

Pros: Ortofon cartridge, quiet operation, understated good looks.

Cons: Fiddly anti-skating setup, static electricity everywhere!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Rega turntables came highly recommended by a friend. I was also influenced by the online reviews of the Pro-Ject DC. Overall, I'm very pleased with this turntable, although I wish it had an automatic return feature; however, I knew it didn't have that feature when I bought it. Given its performance, I've no plans of trading it in on a different model. I've been wanting to unearth my stored vinly albums for some time now, and the Pro-Ject DC and cartridge combo has delivered the great sounds I remember enjoying 40 years ago. BTW: while the manuracturer's setup instructions seemed intimidating, I found an online vid that easily walked me through the process. I would highly recommend this turntable on it's price point and the exceptional sound quality of the unit.

Pros: Great sound reproduction. Quality product. Easy setup.

Cons: Manual return...but that's the only reason it doesn't get five stars.

Best turntable I have ever heard

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been an audiophile since the mid 1960s. When I was a teenager I saved my money to get an AR turntable with a Shure V-15 Type II cartridge. In the early 1980s I switched to a linear arm turntable. I carefully copied my LPs to open reel tape at 7.6 inches per second. I had great speakers and great headphones. I did a lot of serious listening. I often displayed the audio signal on an oscilloscope. In the 1990s I began replaying all of my LPs to put them on CD. I spend untold hours looking at the digital signals. When we moved this past year, my wife brought a box of her LPs. She was never quite satisfied with the transfer to her iPod. So I bought the Pro-ject DC Carbon. My first impression was that it was similar to my AR turntable. But that was only a superficial comparison. The tone arm on the Pro-ject is amazing. At fist I thought it was a gimmick. Then I started to play records. The clear sound and overall sonic experience was far beyond my expectations. It was like I had never heard the records before. Analyzing the signals, I was blown away at the lack of rumble - the only "cleaning" I needed to do for the iPod transfer was remove "pops" and "clicks" that are in some of these old LPs. The adjustment of the tracking force and anti-skating was a wee bit unclear in the manual, but Crutchfield has produced a video that explains it clearly. The system works perfectly. The cue lever has nearly perfect characteristics. My overall

Pros: Great sound. Fantastic tone arm characteristics. Great cartridge. Great cue lever.

Cons: If you don't like manual turntables, this may not be for you. Dust cover is hard to use on a shelf. You need about 18 inches of vertical height. External pre-amp needed. You need a dust control system - anti-static brush or brush that tracks the groove.

5 Stars for performance! 4 Stars for a little bit of frustration during setup. Once it is connected and balanced, it is an unbelievable sound experience. If you are considering the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, you will have to ask yourself these questions- 1. Do you care that it does not have automatic tone arm return? You will have to get up and manually return the tone arm to its rest. 2..Do you intend to play 45 RPM? Prepare yourself to remove the platter and change the belt from one position to another. 3. Do you have an aversion to watching someone show you on YouTube how to set up & balance the tone arm, and set the anti-skate mechanism (which is an exercise in patience)? I could not have done the set up without the You Tube demo. And hanging a weight with a very fine piece of fishing line is , well, just a little weird. But, having gotten through it, the moment you drop the needle on a fine piece of vinyl, all previous frustrations disappear. The sound is amazing. It is the blending of 3 components working in harmony- the amp, the turntable, and the speakers. Enjoy!

Very happy with my turntable after one week. Had to use extensions on RCA cables (used basic set from Walmart), and not surprised to hear bad hum and buzz. Replaced cables that came with turntable and connected heavy duty cables- 6 no more noise. It's a real beauty. Crutchfield was outstanding, and even sent a follow up post card thank you note. Nice touch!

Pros: Very good sound

Cons: If you're not ready for fully manual mode, don't buy this.

When I got the vinyl "bug" again this year after a long hiatus, I had a run-of-the-mill Technics from the 80's rotting in the basement. I decided to get a decent looking, budget oriented, updated turntable. After much research, I zeroed-in on this one. Crutchfield offered a bargain I couldn't resist from the "scratch & dent" fitted with the Ortofon 2M Red. Aside from the horrible non existing instructions on how to set up the anti skating weight, I was impressed by the looks and the solidity of the Pro-ject DC. The cartridge came perfectly aligned as I confirmed with the included protractor. I have seen the 2M reviewed favorably and I was not disappointed. To my ears it's just as good as my friend's $1200 pretentious cart. I'm ecstatic with this combo and am starting to see what was all the fuss and what I'd been missing.

I'm very happy with this turntable! After my old AR turntable died more than 7 years ago I have been debating whether or not to buy this one. I wasn't sure I would use it or listen to my old LPs. I had read the reviews and knew I wanted this model (or back then it's predecessor). Well I finally took the leap and am enjoying it immensely! Part of my reluctance was due to some of the comments about confusing setup instructions. Well I watched a few different YouTube setup tutorials. It was so easy to do I felt silly for the worry! Great service from Crutchfield. Great turntable, looks beautiful and sounds warm and beautiful as well. Don't wait as long as I did!

Worth it, but had to give up dream of automatic

Joe from Saratoga Springs, NY on 2/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good turntable. I really wanted an automatic turntable as I have small kids currently and can't always run right back to remove the tone arm from the end of the record. So I tried the Denon DP-300F. It was okay, but it had inconsistent speed issues. I then tried the Fluance RT-81 which is great (with 'auto off,' it stops spinning at the end of the record) and sounds excellent, but it also had speed issues (always slow at 32.3 RPM instead of 33.3!). That made it unlistenable. So, I narrowed it to the manual options of Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC and the Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB deciding I would give up my dream of having a good sounding Automatic turntable for $400 or less. Seems like that should be an option in this day and age! Anyhow, went with the Pro-Ject Carbon as I am not a DJ and don't regret it. Sounds nice and speed is right on. I will likely pick up the Q Up automatic tone arm lifter eventually for it. It would be great it Crutchfield sold those too. About the only negative to me is a replacement stylus for the Orthofon 2M Red cartridge is costly. The Grado Prestige Black and the Audio Technica AT95E have much cheaper stylus replacements, and honestly, I can't hear the difference between the three. I think all three sound great.

My Pro-ject project

David A. from Scottsdale, AZ on 1/10/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The bottom line is that the sound from this turntable is awesome. Would I buy it again - YES!! However, it's appropriate that the company is named Pro-ject, because setting up this product can be a project. OK, pardon my exaggeration, because it's really not that difficult. Only the lack of clear directions makes it so. It pays to watch a couple of good youtube videos before you start. Also, there can be some vibration or a slight chatter from the motor. This is mechanical, not electronic. The problem - nowhere in the directions does it say to remove the transport screws. It took phone calls to Crutchfield and the company in CA to get this resolved. After removing the screws, the turntable is absolutely silent. Beware - the anti-skating mechanism is a little flimsy. Once everything is resolved - great performance and a great value for the price.

Pros: Awesome sound, great value.

Cons: Lack of clear directions can make set-up burdensome. Flimsy anti-skating mechanism.

I'm really liking my entry back to vinyl. The turntable was packed really well. Recently purchased the Pro-Ject Debut Caron to replace my old Technics Sl-D1, which also used an Ortofon 2M Red. The Project had a night/day improvement in sound, especially with older LP's (some 35 plus years old). Set up was easy with the pre-installed and aligned Ortofon 2m. My only regret was not buying the Pro-Ject sooner.

Pros: Pre-installed cartridge, easy set-up. Great price.

Cons: None, if you are interested in a complete manual turntable. Anti-Skate support bracket needed a slight rotation CW to avoid support string rubbing on tone arm, but this was easy. Discussed with both Crutchfield and also Pro-Ject factory representative in CA, who both agreed was a proper adjustment.

Elegant Simplicity

Paul from Dexter, MI on 6/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose the Debut Carbon based on Pro-Ject's reputation and the utter simplicity of the turntable. While my old turntable was fully automatic this one is fully manual; for those unaware; that means once you turn it on you have to manually use the cueing lever to lift the tone arm and lower it to the record as well as lift it again at the end of the side. The turntable itself is very well made, the finish is excellent and feels as though its made of quality components. That said, there are two issues that some may not appreciate, the felt platter mat which is a dust magnet and the fishing line mounted anti-skate weight that seems like an afterthought. Set up was fairly easy though setting the balance of the tonearm took a few tries to get right. So far I've enjoyed my new turntable, its been great to breathe new life into old records, discover new vinyl and feel as though I am involved in the listening experience. The four hundred dollar question of course, how does it sound? In a word excellent. The motor is silent and the speed stability is faultless so the music that comes through is going to be as good as your speakers allow. The Debut Carbon is going not going to be the weak link in your listening experience!

Pros: -Quality -Excellent materials over all -Fairly easy to set up

Cons: -fishing line anti-skate weight -Initial balance can be a bit finicky

Calvin from Jacksonville, FL on 6/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like everything about the turntable except the anti-skate mechanism design. The anti-skate loop comes off the stub too easily. It didn't help that the anti-skate wire wasn't positioned correctly in the factory. It was too close to the tonearm. With the wire positioned correctly the line touches the tonearm when the tonearm moves toward the center of the record. I doubt that that's supposed happen but I couldn't find information about how high the wire loop should be from the base of the turntable. If the wire loop holding the line was a little higher this touching would not happen. The documentation could be improved. The diagram on the bottom of page 2 describes how far the anti-skate wire should be positioned from the tonearm but the diagram isn't labeled and there aren't any references to the diagram in the manual so the only hint to what it's about is the part number for the anti-skate wire, 17. It took me a few attempts to understand the tonearm weight adjustment. If instructions were a little clearer I could have gotten it the first time. I haven't made the changes necessary to play 45s yet. If someone asked my advice I'd give it a qualified recommendation. I'm not going to return the turntable but if I had experience with the turntable before I bought the DC I might have bought something else.

Pros: Sounds good, good cartridge

Cons: anti-skate design

What an amazing product for the small monetary investment. The turntable just exudes quality. It arrives with a quality cartridge already installed to the carbon fiber tone arm, and even the appearance of the TT looks like a work of art. I chose the 'piano' finish and although it does show dust, it is worth it to have the appearance in my home. Speaking of things in my home, the quality music reproduction that now is a permanent fixture in my home is due to the existence of the Pro-Ject turntable as part of my stereo set-up. I recommend this product extremely highly. The only reason that I do not give it 5 stars is due to the fact that it is fully manual operation. But I find that most high quality, audiophile pieces are. Regardless, you will not be disappointed with this piece.

Pros: High quality music reproduction, Art-like appearance, quality cartridge pre-installed, ease of tone arm set-up.

Cons: Fully manual operation (but a SMALL price to pay for such a quality piece.)

I wish I could say that I am an expert and researched turntables for weeks before buying this one, but no. I chatted with a Crutchfield specialist, told her I haven't purchased a turntable in twenty years, and looked to her for guidance. She put together a great configuration for me including this turntable. It really is just what I need.

Pros: Nice, solid construction. Weighty platter on a stable base. Well-balanced tone arm. Smooth belt-driven motor. Absolutely excellent sound.

Cons: To switch from 33 1/3 RPM to 45RPM you remove the platter and move the drive belt from one pulley to another -- not as simple as flipping a switch. But the trade off of a motor that only spins at one speed is a better and more reliable system.

Great purchase!

Jonathan from Charleston, WV on 2/17/2016

I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase this player. I wanted a serious upgrade to my Denon DP-29F player (also purchased from Crutchfield!), and this appears to be just that. Ordering from Crutchfield is a breeze and only a snow storm could delay my free two-day shipping by a day, but it was worth the wait. The player is solid, well-built and easy to set up. Just watch the YouTube videos on setup ( I found 3 that were helpful). The videos take all the confusion re: the anti-skate weight, etc. out of the picture. I didn't even have to read the directions. I debated on the upgraded Carbon DC Esprit because of the platter, but I can always get the platter later. I will because I can, but based on sound quality I don't see the need. As for switching the belt for 45s vs. 33 1/3, it's a very simple process. This player is quiet, absolutely no hum from the motor or the supplied cables. All in all, what a beautiful piece for the price.

Pros: Well-built, solid, heavy construction. Beautiful finish. Upgrades possible later, but not obviously necessary.

Cons: None!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this a good player for the money, but I have a few issues with this product that are hard to overcome. 1st and for most the ant-skating mechanism is terrible. It's loosely rigged with a fishing line to the weight and back of tone arm and falls off all of the time, it's Really Annoying. Then there's the hinges for the cover which are attached via cheap plastic brackets and cheap metal screws. Not impressed at all and I can see this breaking after time. The last issue is the set-up. The tone-arm counter weight, and the problem I have with it is that where it's packed in the box I couldn't find it. Pro-ject ought to add a note in the manual saying it's packed in the styrofoam.

Pros: Sounds good for the money. Set-up video found on the web is helpful.

Cons: Anti-skating system is awful. Cheap hinges and weak design overall for the plastic cover.

I hadn't bought a turntable in a very long time, so I was basically starting from scratch. After some research I had it narrowed down to the Pro-ject debut carbon and the music hall mmf-2.3.I believe either one would have been a good choice, as they are very similar. In the end it came down to a coin toss and the pro-ject won out. Turns out that I'm very happy with the outcome. The setup was easy, after looking at a you tube video. A no-nonsense turntable

Andrea from Columbus, OH on 1/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, a great value for the money. Not a perfect turntable, but I believe one would be hard-pressed to find a better one under $400. I have had it for about two weeks and no issues have surfaced so far. Setup was easy, but the anti-skating mechanism is a bit tricky. I had to use a different setting than the one recommended in the manual to avoid the tonearm to slide across when positioning the needle at the beginning of the record. Some hum is indeed transmitted to the preamp, but somewhat within the noise floor. I guess one could detract one star for that from the rating. Everything else works flawlessly (there is really not much that can go wrong, this is as a bare bone setup as it gets). Motor is silent, no vibrations heard from the body of the turntable. I need to listen to more records before casting a judgment on the sound (I am in the process of cleaning up my record collection after more than 20 years of neglect) bur what I have heard so far sounds promising.

Pros: Good overall turntable, possibly the best value available today. No noise from the motor, speed seems accurate when listening. Good tonearm mechanism. Looks great. Detachable audio connectors. Sounds good, but it is a bit too early for me to say.

Cons: The anti-skating mechanism is very basic (three settings), and not very accurate. Some hum transmitted through the tonearm, not a deal-breaker, but it may be of concern to some. Setting of the tonearm was simple, apart from the anti-skating mechanism (I had to ignore the recommendation from the manual)

I am a big jazz fan and the Debut Carbon DC brings out each instrument beautifully and the vocals sound amazing. You'll think Diana Krall is in the room with you. Buy it and you will love it.

Pros: Easy setup Sound is amazing

Cons: None

Top-Quality Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching which turn table to buy for weeks on end I decided to invest a little extra and get the one I really wanted. If I have thousands invested in records which should my TT be only $100-200? I decided to go with a belt drive, fully manual model because it breaths classic and intimate. The only parts present are utilitarian. High quality construction and the sound is out of this world. I have yet to meet someone with a better sounding set up. I went for the Red gloss because life is short- and black screams cheap-looking. I also opted for the acrylic platter which allows me to go without a slip mat and the sound is even better. A pro-ject pre amp into my bose sound dock 10 and I'm listening to un-distorted bliss. Worth every penny. Don't settle when it comes to music.

Pros: -Sound -Quality -Easy Set Up (watch YouTube for walk through) -Sleek look -Resale Value

Cons: -Price -Switching the belt from 33 to 45 requires taking off the platter but it's worth having one less part to go wrong (a button) and how many 45s do they even sell anymore? -Your friends will be jealous

Good quality sound for the price, nice finish, time will tell as only had for a couple weeks. Had a few issues with anti-skate weight fishing line slipping off. Finally put tiny application of super glue on line with toothpick.

Pros:

Cons: anti-skate weight line

I am really quite the novice. I didn't even realize that manual meant you had to manually return the arm to the rest. I thought all turntables do that automatically. Now that I know better I am very pleased with my purchase. I never knew my old record sounded so so good. Plus it's good to get off my butt every 20 minutes or so.

Cons:

It was between this and the RP1...

Marshall from South Carolina on 12/21/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had narrowed my choice for new turntable down to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC and the Rega RP1. I was replacing a 80's Realistic Turntable, and I chose the Debut for a few reasons. 1. The Debut Carbon is significantly heftier than the Rega RP1. Rega's design principle of light and rigid sounds good, but when I felt the table with my own hands and saw it in person, it felt cheaper. I'm not convinced light/rigid makes for better sound either. The Debut is heavier. It feels like it belongs in a HiFi system. 2. The tonearm on the Debut Carbon DC is much nicer. It's a carbon tonearm, single-piece construction. The RP1 has 2 parts: a tube and headshell (glue holding them together). 3. The leads on the RP1 come directly from the cartridge. The back of the RP1 has two cables: power and audio out. The audio out on the RP1 does not have a ground wire (not a negative, just an interesting fact). The Debut, on the other hand, has RCA plugs on the back of the turntable (you can upgrade and swap out your interconnects. 4. I think the Cartridge on the Debut is a nicer cartridge than the stock RP1. 5. The Debut was almost $50 cheaper than the RP1 when I bought it (445 for the RP1, 399 for the Debut Carbon) On the other hand, the anti-skate feature on the RP1 is more elegant than the weight and string solution for the Debut. Maybe the Rega name has better pedigree, but I liked the overall feel, sound, and look of the Debut Carbon. It's a really attractive table.

Pros: Good sound, price, looks,

Cons: No manual return, anti-skate weight is a little strange,

Outstanding turntable!!

Pros: Sleek, simple, and beautiful sound.

Cons: A bit of a pain to balance the arm

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There was a slight hum that many reviewers speak of, but it seems to have disappeared over time. This player replaced an Audio Technica LP-120. While there are plenty of mechanisms for making adjustments on this model, the Audio Technica had a great deal more, and the Audio Technica seemed to constantly need major and minor adjustments. The Pro-Ject doesn't, which is a huge plus in my book. Audiophiles seem to always be upgrading their turntables and I'm probably going to do the same, but if upgrading wasn't ever going to be an option, I'm quite happy with the Pro-Ject's sound and performance.

Pros: Consistency/Mostly Hassle-Free, Attractive, Size, Great Sound

Cons: Slight hum for the first month or so.

Great turntable and cartridge. (Pro-Ject Caron Debut - Orotofon red cart) It does what exactly what I wanted. Not a lot of bells and whistles just a great piece of gear delivering exactly the performance I was looking for in a belt drive turntable.

Pros: Well made - execlent purpose specific design and execution - quiet operation

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had the original ProJect Carbon Debut that I purchased from Crutchfield around 20 months ago. What a great sounding turntable except for some minor motor noise. I also replaced the felt pad with a cork Music Hall pad. Great upgrade. Unfortunately, I started having a persistent dropping out of the right channel. After calling customer support and doing some trouble shooting, Crutchfield agreed to warranty my old turntable. Since I really like the Carbon Debut, I opted for the latest version. My out of pocket cost was only $10. Now for the good. The new unit has a much better power supply that is essentially silent. In addition, the connections on the rear of the unit have been moved further back to make it easier to connect the RCA and ground wire connections. The Ortofon cartridge sounds great and is very musical. Upgrade path is available for these cartridges in the future. I don't understand why people deduct a point for this being a manual turntable. It is clearly stated in the description. I have the red one and it looks classy. I do recommend using the dust cover while playing. In my case I have a fairly powerful subwoofer close to the turntable. This can cause feedback with my oak floor in a pier and beam house (new house to us). Some nice rugs for Christmas will be in order. The turntable is hooked up to a Hagerman Bugle 2 preamp, then into my NAD T748 into B&W 685 speakers (biamped) and my homemade 12" 300 watt sub. Superb sound!

Pros: Crutchfield customer support. Simply the best. I've been buying here for over 20 years. No surprises. The turntable sounds like a dream. Best bang for the buck turntable. Wash your old records before you play them for best results.

Cons: The felt mat. I would try the cork before spending the money for an acrylic platter.

A turntable that sounds as good as it looks

Dean S. from Wisconsin on 11/3/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a decent turntable that would sound great without costing a fortune. I kept seeing great things written about this turntable across different audio review sites. Crutchfield was super helpful during my purchase, and their recommendation sealed the deal. Crutchfield even special-ordered the gloss blue version for me, so I'm grateful for the awesome service! The instructions weren't terribly clear, but luckily there are a lot of very helpful online videos that show how to set it up. Set-up took about 20 minutes. Everything feels high-quality - from the beautiful gloss finish, carbon tone arm, and hidden on/off switch. It looks amazing. I hooked it up to my 20-year-old Onkyo amp. The sound is great; especially through my Grado headphones (also from Crutchfield). It skipped on me a few times when I played it loud, but I don't know if I need to adjust my tone arm settings, or move it further away from my speakers. I need to play with it more. I love listening to it; it's made my records fun again. You do need to change the belt to switch from 33 to 45 rpm - but it's super easy to do. If you want a turntable that sounds great and looks great too; this one is a good choice.

Pros: Great cartridge, high-quality tone arm, awesome color

Cons: Instructions aren't clear

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding and appearance turntable. You get that classic analog sound (somewhat different from CD audio). IMO CD audio is cleaner and brighter.

Pros: Classic Analog audio. Very attractable turntable.

Cons: No auto return when record is finished playing. Kind of finicky with ground issues (Hum).

great build quality, awesome sound

SR from Virginia on 10/16/2015

This is a really excellent product overall. Great build quality, and truly superior sound even from records that have seen better days. I really enjoy this turntable, and it has made me want to get even more into my collection. My one small reservation is that set-up was a little difficult if you are not familiar with new turntable set-up, or haven't done it in a while. Luckily online videos are extremely helpful. The anti-skate weight is also a little finicky in staying on, but once you get used to it not too bad.

Pros: Great sound, excellent build quality

Cons: Confusing set-up instructions, required to go to "outside" research to get tone arm set-up properly.

Great Table, but...

Papafoxtrot from New York on 9/15/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This table is an excellent sounding and super easy to set up table for the price. The reson I am giving it 4 stars is due to poor quality rca cables that come with the ProJect Debut. When I set the table up at first I had a ground issue that I couldn't resolve. I tried a several different setups of my equipment to resolve the issue. Then I unintentionally turned one of the attached rca cables and the ground noise nearly disappeared. So I replaced the cables with Audioquest cables and the ground noise was totally resolved.

Pros: Great sounding table for the money and super easy setup but...

Cons: Poor quality included rca cables

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From my childhood days I wanted to experience vinyl, however due to its affordability and maintenance could not fulfill the wish. There after digital world ruled and the wish was never fulfilled until I have come across this machine. Few factors that motivated me are the positive reviews (highly regarded as flawless machine in the entry-mid level in every forum), cost and recommendation by one of my friend who has been living in analog world for more than 30+ years. First of all out of the box the sound of this machine blew away all my earlier experiences. I recommend this to everyone interested to experience analog audio. One issue is the ProJect documentation is confusing. I had to go to an online video to perform the setup. One posted was excellent, detailed and very helpful to a novice user. After giving serious listening I started exploring options to enhance/upgrade further. One of the recommendations by many people for Carbon was an upgrade to Speedbox. However, could not find one compatible with Carbon DC. Just then the forums and community of Crutchfield has helped. Post a question will definitely receive a response in few hours. Thanks to all the members. This version already comes with a DC Speedbox just that switching from 33 to 45 rpm has to be done manually. Only caveat for me is the manual switching. I have bunch of EPs that are 45rpm while others are 33 rpm. Doing a manual switching is bit painful.

Pros: Excellent clarity and details Warmth feel Ease of initial setup

Cons: Switching between speeds Very light and delicate

Excellent Turntable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up. The sound quality makes my previous turntables of yesteryear look like child's play. Bought this with the Cambridge phono pre-amp and AudioQuest Evergreen cables. And yes, better cables do make a difference. Turntable is solid, smooth, and high quality. Rated as an entry level unit in many reviews, however I would recommend to anyone looking for a great unit for the price.

Pros: Sound quality, set up, ease of use.

Cons: Switching from 33 to 45 rpm requires removing the platter and adjusting the belt.. but who listens to 45s anyway?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a great buy. Easy to install, sounds great, and fantastic to get back into the world of Vinyl after a few years of being away. The only reason I dropped the rating by one star to 4 is because there is no automatic shut off switch after the LP is finished playing. Pretty big omission in my view. But overall I am very satisfied.

Pros: Sound Quality, Set Up

Cons: no automatic shut off switch

Classic & Progressive approach to LP

C from Oklahoma on 7/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Days of youth "record players" and tape cassettes were the norm. Saturn has made its return once and now have family along with really good music setup. Keep seeing LPs everywhere and got the itch to revisit. As much as I like digital, I have an underlying belief that a good analog source sounds better. Kind of like a little CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) in a movie is great, a lot and you feel sun scorched. Anyway, couldn't justify $1000 but didn't want to hook up a $200 player to the system. Like goldilocks, this little guy is so right. Carbon fiber tone arm, great Ortofan Red stylus, glossy paint and little dust cover. It sounds wonderful and is very predictable to use. Solid all the way around. Did buy Cambridge audio MM phono amp to go with it. Cannot say enough how this turntable is perfect. One change, I found the felt matt that comes with it to be really static attracter. Went online and purchased the Leather It (Project Carbon leather matt) to go on the platter. Much better as I thought the acrylic might be overkill for my taste. Really and truly this has been a lot of fun and now I am listening to album sides again - kind of like that I can't change songs on a whim - hearing the whole story that the artist meant me to hear. Pink Floyd the Wall - 2 LPs - fantastic

Pros: Design, design, design - everything works well

Cons: Small con - instructions on installing the anti-skate weight were not clear at all. On line video by an Australian guy assembling same turntable - perfect - 2 minutes to install correctly.

Basic design, high end sound.

Crutchfield customer from Austin, TX on 5/6/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound. I don't think you'll find better sound anywhere for under $500.

Pros: Very basic design. I had no trouble setting it up myself, although it was a bit time consuming. Maybe that's part of the charm of a turntable... I can't say enough about the sound quality - top notch.

Cons: Design almost too basic. Coming from a Dual 1019 it does seem to be missing some of the key features, like auto start and stop, but at the same time, it seems like Pro-Logic really maintained focus on getting the best sound possible for under $500.

Great Classic turntable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have ordered Pro-Ject carbon and the music hall usb-1 to compare and end up not even opening the other one. I've paired pro-ject carbon with pro-ject phono box s preamp and the sound is Amazing plenty of bass and very natural sound. Yes I did experience hum and it drove me crazy for 2 days. I Did lots of research online and called crutchfileld for advice. I almost gave up. So I tried separate wire and grounded turntable to the outlet. It eliminated 90% of hum. Also, RCA cables look good and include grounding but it only eliminate some hum and I'm sure they add more noise and that's going to be my next upgrade. The Turntable is very classic piano black and simple compared to Music Hall usb-1 and that's another reason why I love it so much Thanks Pro-Ject and Crutchfield

Pros: Sound, simple classic look

Cons: Hum, should be grounded with separate wire no instruction for that

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this turntable to replace an older Kenwood turntable that I had paired to a Kenwood amp that was giving problems, I didn't want to go to the top range in a turntable so followed the excellent ratings this unit has received from fellow customers of Crutchfield and I have to say what a great dfecison that has turend out to be. I paired the Debut Carbon DC with a Marantz PM 6005 amp and hooked them up to my old faithful Castle Durham speakers and cannot be more pleased. The sound is warm and natural almost to the point of the performers being live in the room

Pros: Easy to set-up, great reproduction from a solid well made unit. Has a great robust dust cover

Cons: Felt turntable mat works OK but is a bit cheap looking.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't had a turntable since the mid-90s, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it seems to be a great turntable. It assembled pretty easily, and the sound I'm getting out of my 30 year-old Polk Audio speakers is phenomenal. Highly recommended.

Pros: Assembled easily. Sounds great.

Cons: The thread attached to the anti-skating weight kept slipping off the groove that is supposed to be attached to. (I applied a single drop of Krazy Glue to the thread at the contact point and it hasn't slipped off since, nor would you know I had to jury-rig it.)

This is a great turntable for someone just getting into vinyl or someone looking to get back into it. Some will say this is a great starter turntable, but this could very well be your last turntable. It's everything that you really need to thoroughly enjoy vinyl. If it's not good enough for you, then the next realistic step up is about a $1000 price tag.

Features

Resonance-Reducing Construction: The attractive resonance-reducing MDF plinth supports a heavier 12" (300mm) diameter metal platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Additionally, a felt record mat is employed for superior record support and coupling. The platter and plinth assembly sits upon four-point "O"-ring feet designed for energy absorption and the plinth-mounted motor is isolated by a new TPE suspension keeping unwanted noise and vibration to a bare minimum. The motor is even decoupled from the plinth to reduce vibration transmission.

Note: The turntable should be positioned on a low-resonance surface such as wood or multiple layer ply-board to avoid structural vibrations disturbing replay.

High-Fidelity Sound: The 8.6" single-piece tube carbon fiber tone-arm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your vinyl recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red moving magnet (MM) phono cartridge by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is capable of exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the record's grooves.

Belt Driven: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon features a quiet running AC motor with a two-step pulley which drives the hub and platter via a flat-ground belt. The Debut Carbon supports 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds.

RCA Output Jacks: Plinth mounted RCA output jacks allow for the use of higher quality interconnects for even better sonic performance. Connect the turntable to the Phono input of your home receiver.

Note: If your receiver does not have a suitable Phono MM input, a separate phono pre-amplifier (sold separately) is required to connect the turntable to your amplifier.

Dust Cover: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon comes supplied with a dust cover to prevent dust build-up on the turntable.

AC Power Adapter: The turntable operates off of standard household current using the supplied external AC power adapter.

Quality and value. Spent a long time trying to decide between the Pro-ject and the Rega RP1 and ultimately decided that it was pretty much six of one or half-dozen of the other. Both had features to recommend them and the Pro-ject is $50 cheaper. So- what the heck. [ Philip  May 11, 2016 ]
I bought this as a wedding present, I bought one for myself a year ago and have been very impressed with its performance. [ LINDSEY CLYDE  Mar 25, 2016 ]

Best bang for my buck, so many good reviews. [ BRIAN  Feb 12, 2016 ]
My friend has one and he recommended it to me. I also did a lot of reviews online and subsequently down to a few choices but at the end I chose Pro-ject. I will hook this up with my older Sony amp/receiver with phono input for now and see how it performs. If all goes well then I will hook it up to my Rotel + B&W speakers later and buy a phono-preamp. [ John  Feb 05, 2016 ]

Seems to be the best balance of quality and price for entry-level hifi/audiophile. Aesthetics-wise, I like the simple and modern look; plus it comes in a few different colors. [ James  Dec 31, 2016 ]
The best rated and recommended(by friends and other amateur audio enthusiasts) at this price point. The default cartridge out of the box is good and and the setup should be simple. More review once I start using it. [ Amrit  Nov 01, 2016 ]

Quality and price. I went with the scratched & dented because I trust Crutchfield to stand behind the products they sell. They certify that the product will perform to the factory standards and assure all the necessary information and accessories are in the box. [ Robert  Jul 05, 2017 ]
Positive reviews all around. Best TT for the money. [ Filandro  Jan 19, 2017 ]
This was the original. I read a lot of reviews and this seemed to offer the level of quality I wanted without veering off into exotically overpriced audiophile gear. Plus the design is simple, contemporary and attractive. I found the assembly with the fishing line on the weight to be difficult, by the way. [ Alan  Jun 02, 2016 ]

I can't really answer as I haven't replaced mine. 2m that came installed sounds great. [ ROBERT L  May 08, 2018 ]
It should be able to accept a record clamp. Although, based on the weight of the turntable and its stability, I do not believe you would need one. [ Robert  May 01, 2018 ]

I will assume the "four feet" are the feet of the phonograph. With that said, there really is not a "distance" to be concerned with as usually the phonograph is on top to be easily accessed. Other than being on top, being the only requirement you are good to go! [ GERALD  Apr 10, 2017 ]

No, you won't need to buy a separate phono preamp since your receiver already has one built in. Although, most receivers with built in phono preamps, use cheaper, low quality components to save on costs. Even the lowest priced preamps offered by pro-ject or other quality turntable manufacturers, will have a dramatic effect on the sound quality your new turntable can produce. My advice to you? If you can't afford to get a quality separate preamp right away, go ahead and use your built in preamp for now, and get a separate preamp as soon as possible in order to realize the true potential of your new turntable. [ Larry  Sep 10, 2016 ]
Hi there, if it really does have a pre-amp included, you might be just fine, but my son loves the way the Pyle Pre-amp sounds w his project.....it is very inexpensive and improves the sound significantly of a turntable. Happy listening! J [ John Lareno  Sep 09, 2016 ]
You should be fine with the built-in phono preamp. It's output voltage will be too low to connect it to any of your other inputs. [ James  Sep 09, 2016 ]
no [ MARK S  Sep 09, 2016 ]
I don't have the exact situation to relate to you. However, it is similar! I bought the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable, with the intention of using the phone pre-amp section, of my Yamaha integrated receiver ( the Aventage RX-A1020, a fairly expensive unit). While it did sound good, it only whetted my appetite to see if it might sound better. I had read articles about how much difference the phono stage makes. So, I borought the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS from Crutchfield. It was even more money than the turntable! I wanted tubes in the pre amp, and the cheaper Pro-Ject was perpetually out of stock. So, I had them order the Tube Box DS. What a great purchase! It made the turntable sound really come alive through my system. It made a huge difference. [ Gregory Martin  Apr 11, 2017 ]
I had similar questions when shopping for my turntable and so I turned to Crutchfirld chat for help. It is first important to understand that it is always better to have a setup that is made up of separate components instead of one that combines them. I was told that the Phono Box USB had a better phono preamp and a better analog to digital converter than did the unit that is installed in the Debut Carbon Phono USB. I would recommend the Phono Box USB. It's the setup I currently have and I think it sounds great. To answer the other question, yes there is an RCA cable in the box but for the Phono Bix USB you will need two cables and so you will have to purchase another one to connect the box to your A5+ speakers. [ Tyler  Mar 27, 2015 ]
Jeremy, the sound coming off the tone arm should be the same as both units ship with the OM10 cartridge. It's hard to find specs on the built in analog to digital converter (ADC) but the stand alone states use of a Burr Brown PCM2904 ADC. No matter how good your ADC, converting an analog signal to digital (hopefully lossless) and then converting that digital file back to analog for playback on a media player you will definitely lose the resolution and quality of a pure analog source which is the entire point of a vinyl versus digital but I digress... Pro-Ject turn tables all ship with RCA outputs. [ Anthony  Mar 27, 2015 ]
I am no expert, this was a gift to my husband who said that he didn't want one with a USB bc it's quality is less. This was confirmed by an audiophile with many turntables that I met in a thrift shop. However, he said that only an audiophile would be able to tell the difference. [ Julianne  Mar 27, 2015 ]
Not sure, I bought the non USB Pre Amp and upgraded the cables from the table to the pre amp with Audioquest a Green cables. Separated the ground wire from the cable that came with the Turntavle to ground. I love the sound. I wanted a vinyl experience and I am extremely happy with the result. Unless you want to transfer your vinal to digital you don't need the USB. If that is your objective the table with the built in pre amp should be fine. [ DONALD J  Mar 27, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It does not include cables. We offer a large variety of RCA cables including varied lenghts you can find those here: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_20110/RCA-Audio-Patch-Cables.html?tp=1904 If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. No there isn't. The performance benefits you are talking about are built in to the newer models, but they lack the convenience of push button rpm changes. [ Michael  Aug 25, 2015 ]
The speed box isn't necessary for the model because is it already has a DC motor built in. The DC power function is what the speed box normally adds and that's why it doesn't add any uprgrade to this particular model. [ KATHERINE  Aug 25, 2015 ]
When the needle reaches the end of the album it just sits in the inner most groove and makes a scratching sound. I did get a little device that lifts the tone arm but the platter still spins. [ STEVEN J  Jun 20, 2015 ]
No auto-return. you gotta raise it up or it goes bump bump bump... [ MARK S  Jun 19, 2015 ]
The stylus follows the groove to the end, where it just circles until you manually put the tone arm back in its cradle. [ MICHAEL  Jun 19, 2015 ]
The arm does not return automatically. When the music ends the arm stays at the end, but does not skate across the label, it just stays at the beginning of the label. There is no scratching noise etc... You will need to lift the arm up and move it back to the cradle. This is a great turntable! After some setup tweaking it has provided some great sound on my old LP's. If your AMP/Receiver does not have a Pre-Amp connection for the turntable, then you will need to purchase a Pre-Amp and connect it to the AMP/Receiver .. make sure to correctly ground the Pre-Amp if using one. Scott [ Scott  Jun 19, 2015 ]
this turntable does not have auto-return. the needle remains on the record at the end of the album forever...until you lift it off! [ Karol  Jun 19, 2015 ]
Simple just lift the stylus assembly off the record with the side lever and place it back in the holder. [ Stephen  Jun 19, 2015 ]
You have to Lift the tonearm with cueing lever and move it back to the arm rest. [ Richard  Jun 19, 2015 ]
It does not have auto-return. When the stylus gets to the end of the album, it remains there until you pick it up. Sounds great, though. [ Ian  Jun 19, 2015 ]
There is a counter weight that hangs from a short piece of basically fishing line, if you will that is designed to return the needle/arm back to the cradle. It honestly doesn't always work the best. Hope this helps. [ Jeremy  Jun 19, 2015 ]
Nothing happens it just stays there , if i was doing it over again i would buy a auto or semi auto turntable You put a record on ,sit down and get comfortable and enjoy the record then in 17 minutes you have to get up and turn the table off or flip the record do, yourself a favor and invest the money in a top quality CD player [ Peter  Jun 19, 2015 ]
Yes, that is correct - there is no auto-return. At the end of the album, you must manually pick up the arm and return it to it's cradle while you flip the record. Otherwise it will just continue to spin. [ JONATHAN  Jun 19, 2015 ]
No automatic return at all. At the end of the album, the record keeps turning and the arm stays hovered at the edge of the label, while the needle stays on the record. No warning beep sounds and no automatic time-out shutoff. If you walk away and forget, it could stay spinning for weeks...or for your entire vacation away from home. That's what happened to us. The problem is that no audio file turntables are anything but totally manual. [ RITCHIE D  Jun 19, 2015 ]
Infinite loop until you pick up the tonearm. That said, this turntable is fantastic. [ Geoffrey  Jun 19, 2015 ]
I think you would unless your amp/receiver has a PHONO INPUT [ MARK S  Feb 02, 2015 ]
If your receiver/amp does not have a phono-level input, then yes, you will need a phono pre-amp. If it does, you will not. [ MICHAEL  Feb 01, 2015 ]
Yes you do. There is another version that has one built in that is a little more expensive. If you have an old receiver with a phone input that works as well. It is a great table. I cannot recommend it enough. [ James  Feb 01, 2015 ]
If your reciver doesn't have a phono input you'll need to buy a phono preamp. [ Christopher  Feb 01, 2015 ]
Hi Richard, If your receiver does not have a phono input yes you will need a phono preamp. They come in various versions and price points. I spent $99 on the one I bought but they can be purchased for much less. Some Pro Ject players come with the preamp that cost a little more. Best of luck. Jeremy [ Jeremy  Feb 01, 2015 ]
Yes you do need a phono amp. You can plug it in to an audio receiver that has one. Alternatively you can buy a separate phono amp. There is another version of this turntable that comes with both a USB connection and a phono amp included. [ Anthony  Feb 01, 2015 ]
Depends on your amp. If it has a phono imput on the back you shouldn't. If not you will need one. [ Richard  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Yes [ Julianne  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Yes you do. I am using a NAD PP2e. Crutchfield has the new PP4 which I would like to try for it has MM/MC and USB output. [ Ralph  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Depends on whether or not your receiver has a phono input. If you are connecting via cd or tape or aux you will need a pre amp. Mine set me back about $100. FYI table sounds incredible! [ ROBERT C  Jan 31, 2015 ]
There isn't an amp built into this turntable. Depending on your stereo amp, you may or may not need a phono preamp. Some stereo amps have a phono preamp built in, but most do not. You'll probably need to buy a preamp separately. NAD is a big manufacturer to look at. [ Adam  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Hi Richard, You will need a phono pre amp if your receiver or amplifier doesn't have a designated phono input. Hope this helps.:) [ Wayne  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Unless your amp or receiver has a phono input you will need one. I believe Pro-Ject sells them through Crutchfield or look on the. Web. It is a great turntable but there is no built in amp Thanks [ Stephen  Jan 31, 2015 ]
Depends on your source if you have phono in then a phono amp will NOT be necessary most modern sources WILL require a phono amp as it wont have a phono in My pioneer elite had a phono in so i didnt need a phono amp [ Robert  Jan 31, 2015 ]
You do in fact need a phono preamp, unless of course your receiver or amplifier has a phono input. [ KATHERINE  Jan 31, 2015 ]
If you have 'phono' inputs on the back of your receiver, no, you won't need to buy one-it's built into your receiver. If you don't have 'phono' inputs then yes, you will need a phono pre-amp. [ Ronald  Jan 31, 2015 ]
I have no idea. Don't think I've ever seen it given in the specs. Why don't you simply order a replacement from Pro-Ject. They will send the correct one. Then, if you really need to know, weigh it. [ JOHN  Feb 25, 2018 ]
Yes [ Julianne  Nov 20, 2014 ]
Yes it does. Set-up was easy and it sounds great. Make sure you have a phono input on your receiver or a phono preamp. [ thomas  Nov 18, 2014 ]
