A best seller just got even better

Focused squarely on performance, Pro-Ject's original Debut turntables proved that you didn't have to spend a fortune to savor the warm, natural sound of vinyl. These easy-to-use, great-sounding, and modestly priced models changed many a music lover's expectations of what an entry-level 'table was capable of.

Now, Pro-Ject has raised the bar again with the Debut Carbon. Boasting improvements in nearly every facet of design, the Debut Carbon breaks new ground, offering features rarely found on turntables in its price range. Each element contributes substantially to the overall improvement in sound — from the tonearm to the updated motor suspension. Here's what's new about the Debut Carbon:

  • an all-new, one-piece carbon fiber tonearm that increases rigidity and reduces unwanted resonances that color sound.

  • a full-size 12" platter with a felt mat to better support your record albums. The resonance-damping alloy platter is also more massive, resulting in smoother, more stable rotation for an all-around sonic improvement.

  • a Sorbothane motor suspension that better isolates the 'table's chassis from vibration, decreasing motor noise and rumble to a bare minimum.

  • gold-plated RCA output jacks mounted on the back of the turntable instead of a hard-wired cable, allowing upgrades to high-quality aftermarket interconnects.

  • a high-performance Ortofon 2M Red phono cartridge pre-mounted to the Carbon's tonearm for precise and accurate sound reproduction.

Crafted for serious sound

The Debut Carbon's sturdy MDF chassis rests on shock absorbing rubber feet that provide a solid, low-resonance foundation. Its heavy 12" steel platter spins on a precision axle and bearing for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The Sorbothane motor mount and belt drive system are designed to isolate the motor's vibration from the chassis to prevent noise from being transferred to the cartridge. An external AC power supply helps reduce the chance of hum, and can even be upgraded with Pro-Ject's Speed Box S for enhanced performance. Finally, the table's new one-piece carbon fiber tonearm includes a silicone-damped lift for gently raising and lowering the arm — protecting both the stylus and your records.

Get the best sound, without the hassle

Pro-Ject knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the Debut Carbon comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force and anti-skating, are all it takes to get this player primed and ready to deliver spacious, detailed music. If you've never experienced the relaxed sound that vinyl is famous for, what are you waiting for?

Great turntable although I did purchase a Grado Red 1reference cartridge which did improve the sound. If you have the extra money, get the acrylic's worth every penny. Also, the pro-ject tube phono line stage pre-amp (with a pair of brass tube crowns from mapleshade) is a good investment depending on the quality of your stereo. The T/T is built well and has a great sound stage. For the money, it's tough to beat this one. Highly recommended.

Great Turntable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great turntable for the price. I really enjoyed using it, however I would up returning it. Not because of a glaring design flaw, or bad sound but because I wanted to go to a higher level. There are a few issues. I am not a fan of the desing of the motor mount. I also had one arrive with a substantial hum, caused by faulty wiring. Crutchfield was awesome as always, and did a quick return. Fantastic Job. I would recommend this if your wanting to spend less than 500. The carbon fiber arm worked well..

Pros: Good sound, simple setup.

Cons: Perhaps a few quality control issues, as well as a peculiar motor mount.

Pro-ject Debut Carbon Turntable with Ortofon Red Cartridge

klee from LA, CA on 10/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Probably the best buy for the money if what you are looking for is a .good vinyl LP sound without paying arm and legs. I liked the rather simple and basic design without any frill. Anti-skating device is a metal ball connected to the tone arm with a nylon string. It does a job. You don't need a sophisticated looking cost elevating fancy gadget to do the job.

Pros: Simplicity, good sound, price.

Cons: Counter-balance is rather flimsy. Turntable mat is too thin. It keeps falling off the platter.

You can't beat performance at this price

Brian from Durham, NC on 9/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded from a low end Sony player and was looking for something that would bring out the best sound from my growing vinyl collection without breaking the bank. The Debut Carbon is exactly what I was looking for. You could easily pay a grand or two more and still not find better sound. Records that had excessive pop and hiss on my old player sound way better/cleaner. The sound coming out of this thing is full and rich and the included Red2M stylus and carbon fibre tone arm are a dream combo. And if the great sound wasn't enough, this player looks amazing in my house!

Pros: Great sound Awesome build quality Great price

Cons: A little extra work to switch between 33 1/3 and 45rpm (but it's a minor quibble)

Solid performer

RDR from Hansville, WA on 9/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just getting back into vinyl and very impressed with the quality of a $400 turntable. I replaced a 10 year old Denon, that sounded OK, but in side by side comparisons the Pro-ject blew it away. I am very impressed with the quality of the so-called entry level turntable.

Pros: Good sound, nice looking and appears quality built. The cartridge is such an improvement over my last turntable it is like night and day.

Cons: Small amount of hum from the motor, but not noticeable when the music starts.

Pros: Meets my needs perfectly

Cons: Wish the included RCA cable was a bit longer

Great sound and price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The turntable sounds and looks great. Also with the Ortofon 2m included, it's a pretty good deal. I only have two minor gripes. First, it shipped with a bent stylus on the cartridge, but they did send me a free replacement. Second, changing speeds from 33 to 45 is annoying. You have to remove the platter and move the belt on the pulley. This can be bothersome if you are going back and forth between lp's and singles, like I often do. Pro-ject does offer a speed box that you can purchase additionally to avoid this, but it costs 1/3 as much as the turntable. Overall, I'm really happy with the TT.

Pros: Great Sound, great looks, and great price.

Cons: Difficulty of speed adjustment.

Took me longer then most to set up but my own stupid mistakes. But with this turntable is the best sound I heard out of my 20 yr old Sony ES system. I had a Sony PSLX250H turntable hook up for my albums which sounded good. But after playing this Pro-Ject Debut Carbon all I Can say is WOW.

Pros: everything about this table is great.

Cons: none

I bought this turntable to replace an old JVC unit. This turntable is leaps and bounds better than the old JVC unit.

Pros: Sound is fantastic, easy to set up, looks cool

Cons: There is a hum from the motor, but once the record starts to play, the hum becomes inaudible.

Pros: Great sound at a good price.

Cons: Speed box needed to reduce motor noise and to change speeds automatically.

Pro ject debut carbon

Vintageandvinyl from Buffalo, ny on 4/25/2014

Upgraded from a cheap USB model to the project. What a difference. Normal vinyl hiss is pushed far into the background. The sound from this table is full, with deep lows and crisp highs. The new model has better motor isolation than the previous, and hum is non evident. Sounds amazing with my denon pre amp and power amp through the polk monitor 70s. Loving every minute.

Pros: Great stock cartridge , great sound

Cons: Stock cables are cheap, and fit extremely loose.

Great product. Simple in design and easy to setup. I didn't use the the setup directions that came with the product, instead I watched instructions on YouTube. I was set up and ready to play in about 15 min. Excellent entry level turntable.

Pros: - Easy setup - Simple design - Looks and plays great

Cons: Provided instructions not as easy to follow as watching an instructional video

Wanted to get back into vinyl recordings , but not so sure I wanted to spend a thousand or more on a turntable . This fit the bill just right . Great sound at a reasonable price . Don't understand other reviews of difficult set up . Just read the directions and was up and running under a half hour . Easy to see why this product is so popular and hard to keep in stock !

Pros: Great sound . I found set up to be easy

Cons: None to speak of at this time

Excellent after some minor tweaks

GAJ from Santa Rosa, CA on 2/13/2014

Audible hum standing next to the turntable: Solution = buy four small neoprene washer and two small metal washers at Home Depot. Remove the two black motor armature screws and place two neoprene washers and one metal washer on top, replace motor screws, tightening down until the neoprene washers just start to deform. This eliminates audible hum standing next to the turntable and reduces hum through the tonearm. Some hum remaining through the tonearm: Replace the loose fitting RCA cables that came with the turntable with some tight fitting higher quality RCA cables. Turntable is now whisper quiet, zero hum audible through the tonearm.

Pros: Great Value, included Ortofon cartridge is excellent.

Cons: Needs minor tweaks to completely eliminate hum.

Nice deck, easy setup

Pete H from Manitowoc, WI on 1/30/2014

I found this turntable to sound as good as it looks. I had no issues with motor hum; and I spun about 50 records before making my final decision. One thing that I'm sure helped was making sure the rack was level before playing any records. Also, setup was a breeze; it took about 15 minutes to have it up and running.

Pros: Sound and appearance, easy setup.

Cons: Tone arm lift is a little small, and platter needs to be removed for speed selection(takes about 5 seconds)

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon

Rudy from LA CA on 1/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A pretty exceptional turntable for the price. Hard to imagine there is anything in this range that can even compare in terms of sheer quality, design and simplicity. As many have said, the manual is lacking and the setup can be a touch confusing (made quite a bit easier by googling a youtube tutorial, of which there are several) but the clarity and precision of the sound is wonderful once you've got the tonearm weight right. There is a lot more motor noise than I'd like. While this can't be heard through the speakers the way it would with a direct drive turntable, if you are sitting close enough to the component itself, you can't hear a distracting hum coming from its chassis. This is the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5; well, that and the opinion that, when listening very critically, I would call the sound the tiniest bit attenuated or compressed, not quite as open as one would hope (but that may be nitpicking). If you can bump up to a unit twice the price, there are much better choices, but if this price is your limit, I don't think you can find any better.

Pros: Great sound, tremendous value.

Cons: Weak instruction manual, fussy set-up, some motor hum.

Simple setup, warm sound

SA from Elkhart, IN on 1/23/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been spinning records since I was a teen in the 80's. After getting use of several turntables over the years, it was time to step up. Maybe because of experience I thought the setup instructions were well explained. I did level the audio rack and I have found that to be very helpful. Took me about 5 - 10 minutes to setup. I'm not sure why others heard hum, but I played records for several hrs with no hum. All my AC is through a Belkin Power Conditioner including the ground wire from the turntable. This machine is nice and solid with some weight to help dissipate vibration. Yet has a delicate feel to it (if that makes any sense). My last turntable was a DJ turntable, which feels more rugged. And I could hear a slight hum due to the direct drive design. A few have removed two of the screws that help hold the motor in place because of hum, but there is enough cushion between the motor frame and plinth. So the motor has a suspension, in my opinion I don't think that's the cause of their hum. In all my experiences, any hum you hear is related to an electrical signal. I've played in a band since the 80's working with crappy gear to pro audio, no matter what you had, hum and feed back was an electrical signal, not caused by vibration. other wise we would have a heck of a time pushing over 6,000 watts through our PA. So don't remove any screws unless it's stated in the manual.

Pros: Entry level audiophile turntable that's plays well sounds good....that it might be the last turntable you ever buy. A great foundation with upgrades that don't hurt the wallet.

Great Sound, after a few adjustments...

wme from Lancaster, PA on 1/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really impressed with the sound from this turntable but I gave it a three star rating because there was a noticeable motor hum that could easily be heard during quiet or silent portions of the record. The hum was removed by removing the two screws that attach the motor to the plinth. The motor is supported by a suspension band so these screws seem pointless except for shipping. I was surprised to see no mention of this in the instructions although the Pro-ject website has some FAQ's that hint at it. Please don't think this is a reason not to buy this player. I would buy one for everyone if I had the money and since I removed the screws there is no hum and the sound is amazing. If you own on of these I would recommend removing the two screws that attach the motor to the plinth. These can easily be seen under the platter. You also have to remove the rubber feet so that the motor is completely suspended by the suspension band.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pro-ject Debut Carbon I purchased in BLUE was MORE than I expected. Besides being a High Qualty Turntable; it is Extremetly Stylish as well: A hard to find combination in most cases. Not to Mention, the Sound Quality is Amazing for a reasonable price that was not out of Sight! And I did my homework!

Pros: QUALITY, PRICE, & STYLISH Too!! A No-Brainer at this point. ENJOY!! - Tim

Cons: Only that my brand new reciever did not come with a Phono (Turntable) port. A cable purchase solved that. I know this has nothing to do with my Proj-ject Carbon Turntable. I had to write something... ha ha :-)

LP versus CD

CFunk from San Diego on 1/4/2014

Debated jumping back into vinyl, I have a high end CD player and great pre/pro amp setup. Read reviews on this unit so I ordered it. Did a side by side comparison switching back and forth from CD to phono with the same cd and lp in each deck. Phono sounded dull and lifeless, reminded me of my parents stereo from the 70's. CD had life and more punch, treble was clear and I heard detail in music. I guess that what is expected from vinyl, everyone states it is warmer, yes I heard that. But I also didn't hear the detail and clarity that cd's deliver. This may be a good turntable for that natural sound but I prefer the current available sonics of the digital age.

Pros: Good for natural warm audio

Cons: Missing detail and punch of digital age

Excellent entree to Vinyl

Mike from Annapolis on 12/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This table sounds fantastic. I haven't had a TT since 1980. I've been thinking of getting one for a couple of years and finally after changing my mind on how much to spend a couple of dozen times and doing my diligent research I decided on this TT and wow I'm happy the only thing I changed was the platter mat from the stock felt to a leather one to reduce static. My receiver has a phono preamp for MM cartridges which this has one ( better than I ever had) so I'm in like Flynn. The set up was easy but I did cheat and watch what to do on Youtube before the table arrived. On time and in perfect shape as always from Crutchfield. If your debating a TT in this price range you will not be disappointed.

Pros: Easy to set up, ready to play. Plus this table is upgrade-able to a point which should be good for years of happy listening.

Cons: The only thing I wish it had was an automatic return but really that isn't an issue.

Scott5350 from Indianapolis, IN on 11/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I moved into a new house and wanted to set up some different spots for media, one need was a modern, turntable to listen to 30 year old record collection along with newly acquired Jazz LPs. I spent some time over a year figuring out what to get -- something good but not crazy expensive. Got it down between Pro-ject Carbon and Rega RP1. Finally settled on Pro-ject because preponderance of reviews said it was better, although my initial thought had been the Rega. Set-up was a little bit clumsy, but sound is great with separate Pro-ject preamp. Let my decide the color -- and she picked red, which is cool. Think I chose wisely.

Pros: Sound and craftsmanship. Value seems worth it.

Cons: Setup not explained well. anti-skating weight seems janky.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable

Kyle from Lubbock, TX on 11/6/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using this turntable for a few weeks now and I have to say, I am impressed. Admittedly, I am relatively new to vinyl and this is only my second table, but it has already given me hours of joy listening to vinyl records. Set up is a little tricky, be sure you read and re-read the directions to double check the understanding. That being said, once you have a grasp of the process, fine tuning the weight and tracking force is relatively simple. This table sounds absolutely fantastic. A friend of mine has a Pioneer Elite digital music player (fantastic unit as well) playing FLAC files from a hard drive. We set up an analog vs. hi resolution digital using his Rotel Pre-Amp and Power Amplifier, with a 5.2 Paradigm Millenia Series set up. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon in stock set up was virtually identical to the FLAC files we tried. I was extremely pleased in this table. One slight drawback, although not a surprise was the need for a separate Pre-Amp, because my receiver doesn't have a phono input. However, my old table, which had an integrated pre-amp, introduced electrical noise into the signal due to the integrated amp. Overall, if you are interested in getting into vinyl or getting back into vinyl, this unit wold be a great addition to your home audio setup. I highly recommend.

Great product

James from Norfolk, VA on 11/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Take it from this newbie that the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is very easy to set up and sounds excellent. For years I had been using an old Sanyo turntable which was mediocre. The Debut Carbon is stellar by comparison and a great value compared to other turntables in its price range. I had researched other entry level turntables and decided on this one based on numerous positive reviews, and I am glad that I did!

Pros: Great sound, good value, easy setup, streamlined look

Cons: Tonearm does not automatically lift itself at end of record

Pro-ject Debut Carbon

mrkoenig3 from Las Vegas NV on 9/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There is a reason this product was named 'number one'. It is an amazing turn table for the small amount of money spent. After a quick set up, I literally listened all day to vinyl. I used to own another direct drive TT, from a very well known company, that sounded good, but I grabbed some high end 180 gram vinyl that I thought had sounded flat and lifeless. What a difference on the Pro-ject Debut Carbon! Deep rich sound, (no vinyl sound,) dark deep silences in between notes and thunderous sound exploded from this vinyl like no CD I have ever heard. I do have this piece in CD in VHS and Vinyl formats so I know the differences...nothing can compare to this Pro-ject Debut Carbon TT with this vinyl. I listened to all four albums on both sides. I really could not believe the differences in what I was hearing. I had to get all my other albums out one by one for the next eight hours, mostly from garage sales for dollar a piece, making this really a cheap way to listen to Audiophile music. Live stuff sounded live. Studio sounded incredible. I'm playing one of those garage sale specials now. What a lovely sound I'm hearing. Belt drives IMHO, are better than direct drives because the changes in speed that has to happen to keep it at 331/3 are slower and more subtle with the belt so way less noticeable. Couple that with the heavy platter, strong motor, carbon arm and well matched cartridge and you have the Pro-ject Debut Carbon; for the money the best bargain out there.

Pros: Color, Carbon fiber arm, cartridge, belt drive. Easy set up.

Cons: cheap wall wort power supply, which can be up-graded.

Best turntable for your money

Lionel from Wilmington, DE on 8/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the turntable to beat at the price range. The sounds from the Ortofon 2M cartridge are warm and clear. Bass and treble are well modulated. The table is easy to use once configured, and the slow stylus drop is a nice touch. There's nothing wrong with it and it can be upgraded down the line to improve the sound

Pros: Easy to use, Minimalistic stylishness, Neat colors, Great supplied cartridge.

Cons: Instructions were muddy about setting up the counterweight on the tone arm. I had to watch a video on YouTube to figure it out. After the video, the instructions made sense, but they were obviously written by someone who has probably done it with their eyes closed and just assumed people would know what he or she was meaning.

At first was not very impressed with manual turntable. Hook up was more complicated. After hooked up and played vinyl album THE SOUND WAS INCREDIBLE. It brings vinyl back to life. Never thought a turntable make a difference in sound made huge difference.

Pros: Amazing sound and albums that skipped before played without skipping.

Cons: Installation not as easy as described and slight humming may have to buy pre-amp

Cons: Difficult to understand manual. Counter weight created issues with tracking

Happy with my Pro-ject

return2_1978 from Peham NH on 7/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My turntable arrived and looked great, but when I turned it on, the base vibrated and emanated a noticeable hum. I was very disappointed but I had no time to deal with it as I needed to travel. Upon returning 4 days later I was surprised as the base was magically fixed --- no vibration, no hum. I'm guessing something needed to "settle" after shipping (maybe it was upside down during shipment?). In any case, the turntable works great and my 19 YO who had never heard an LP before ("You mean you need to position that thing to choose the song? Really?") thought the live rendition of the Kink's "Lola" sounded "More live" than any CD he'd ever heard. The Bass response, the highs, the dynamic range --- I never had a turntable/ cartridge this good back in the '70s. Very Happy,

Pros: Excellent sound

Cons: I wish the dust cover was more easily removable as I don't like the idea of flipping it up and down with each album change. I'd like something without hinges that drops into place for long term dust protection without having to slide off the hinges --- not a big deal though, just my preference. Shipping I guess, can affect the initial performance (see review).

Great, good-looking turntable

Big Daddy from Rockville, MD on 6/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm Getting back into vinyl after many years. My last turntable was a low-end Sony that skipped if you walked by it, so I didn't want to do that again. While this was more than I originally intended to spend, the money has been well spent. I would highly recommend this turntable to anyone who's a beginner audiophile. The only thing I'd note is that it was difficult to set it up. The instructions in the manual weren't that clear when it came to balancing the tonearem. I called Crutchfield for help, but the tech guy just read the manual to me. Not really his fault, though. I don't think anyone could explain how to do it over the phone. I'd recommend watching a couple videos online for assistance. Once it's set up, though, it's a truly awesome machine.

Pros: Looks great, sounds great

Cons: Difficult to set up

Couple surprises..

Tee from Pennsylvania on 6/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all the reviews and researched before buying this turntable. The one surprise was that in order to go from 45 RPM to 33 1/2 RPM or vice versa you are required to lift the platter and move the rubber band from one groove to another. That information should be up front and in the description of the item. I hooked this turntable up to a NAD 356BEE amplifier and purchased a Pro-ject S Box with this turntable. There is an Pro-ject SE (E stands for Electronic) box which negates the need to manually move the platter, but it is not readily available, and apparantly, is not in demand. My guess is that the "SE" Box gives off noise and that is unwarranted. The turntable is silent in its operation but, of course, you will get some noise when you turn the pre-amp box on. In order to hear this noise (the turntable is properly grounded) I need to turn the amp up to about 11 oclock to hear it. The turntable comes with a Ortofon Red needle but as others have stated, the manual does not tell you how to set it up (weight to be placed on the needle).

Pros: Great sound. Looks great. Well made.

Cons: At this price plus the Pro-ject pre-amp S box this setup cost me $600. That is steep and not in the wheelhouse for the majority of people. The record revolution will have to get cheaper for it to really take off. Most will tell you that records sound better than other means to play music but I have a relatively cheap Yamaha CD Player CDS-300 and play music on my thumb drive and while I would give the edge to the records, my bet is that a better CD player may rival or come awfully close to the sound.

Great Turntable

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my old turntable died, I was looking for a reasonably priced replacement. This was a great purchase. It was pretty easy to put together, although the instructions were slightly confusing in one or two places. Even so, it didn't take too much to get things working. The sound is great, and it seems very well made. Anyone who has searched for reviews of entry-level turntables would expect as much. In all, I'm very satisfied. Shipping from Crutchfield was quick and easy. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, and I was happy with the results.

I decided to bring my vinyl collection out of retirement and began looking for a turntable on craigslist. After many miles and continuing disappointment i started shopping on ebay. Same results. So I bought from Crutchfield. I am very happy and like the quality. Its true, you get what you pay for.

Pros: Good Packing. Great sound

Cons: The install instructions could be better.

Great table, great bargain

JohnS from New York, NY on 5/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound from this table, simple to set up and adjust and it looks great (I went with the red). Probably worth a few bucks to get gold plated RCA cables to replace the one supplied. One thing that's not great is the really flimsy felt pad for the platter, it's so thin it comes up when removing a record from the platter. You'll want to replace that, or even the entire platter (stamped steel) with a solid acrylic platter, as many have suggested. Then this table would be as good as it gets for the money.

Pros: Extremely easy to set up and adjust the tone arm

Cons: Very thin felt pad on the platter, needs an upgrade

Great performance

Bob from Clearwater, Fl on 5/6/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Beautiful styling, EZ setup (except the trick to hanging the anti-skating weight is to position the arm towards center of table), good price and sounds great.

Pros: simple set-up - good perforamance

Cons: May only be able to replace stylus with similar - no tone arm height adjustment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been hauling around about 300 albums for 30 to 45 years. Kept them all from getting moldy ( somehow). The turntable is awesome. Really takes me back. My old DUAL semi-auoto just couldn't take all the moves in my life. Got this with the Cambridge 551-P pre amp to put into my aux. input, and after upgrading audio cables to Monster gold.ALL IS WELL.. ( I had some hum w/ standard red/white audio cables.)

Pros: sound , balance of tone arm, looks

Cons: I had to put the turntable in a spot where the top cannot fully open . Don't want to over-tighten top adj. , so I use a black balsa wood "prop-up" stick to keep the top 1/2 open. Can't really see it since all the cabinetry is also black So, in reality ,this not really a "con" for the product , just where I put it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife surprised me with this turntable for my birthday. It replaced a $100 "portable" turntable that I had been enjoying for the past year. I was skeptical as to whether this turntable would actually have a noticeable difference in sound quality. It does. It is like night and day. I have it hooked up to my Harman Kardan Receiver which is connected to a pair of Anthony Gallo micro nucleus speakers. The sound is crystal clear and I can hear so much more out of my records. Awesome birthday present and awesome turntable. For the price, you can't beat it.

Pros: Aesthetic Design, Sound Quality

great intro to LPs

Crutchfield customer from naples fl on 4/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

great intro to LPs. had never owned a turntable, was nervous about the set-up of a record player, but if you follow a video on youtube, it's a breeze. without that video however, the instructions are brutal in my humble opinion. the sound is fantastic but it is my first turntable so no comparisons exist from my history. that being said, blows CDs away. the vocals are the biggest difference, they truly come alive. my onkyo CD player has a hefty DAC in it, but still doesnt do music justice compared to this little gem. would recommend NEW LPs for any beginners out there. IF you take the plunge into USED LPs prepare to be annoyed with the static and popping, which will lead down an endless road of anti-static guns and LP washing contraptions to remedy such, which, in and of itself can be fun, but somewhat frustrating and expensive at the same time.

Pros: real music

Cons: none

Let me first say that I love the sound of the Ortofon 2M cartridge. The turntable has a small amount of motor noise that I can here with my headphones . You can feel the motor vibrate on the mounting board. Overall a nice turntable for the price with a wonderful sounding cartridge. Would buy again.

Pros: Great Ortofon 2M cartridge and great looking turntable.

Cons: Slight motor noise.

This turntable is great. I got it as the first piece of the new home stereo I'm putting together, and even hooked up to my old Sony shelf system it still sounds excellent. I was surprised how simple the setup was out of the box, but it takes less than ten minutes total. I'm so glad I finally got this after it had been on back order for a while. I can see why now!

Pros: Easy Setup Great Sound Looks very sleek

Cons: Bass could be a little better

I researched this turntable on several sites before buying it. I kept hearing about a hum but decided that the good reviews outweighed the bad. Once I hooked it up I noticed the hum. Pros: Very good performance, solid construction, great looking

Cons: Bad cables

My vinly collection has been sitting idle for years because of poor sound quality from a previous turntable. Based upon reviews of this turntable I decided to give vinly another try. I'm not disappointed at all, the sound is excellent for the modest cost of this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This just arrived from Crutchfield today. The wait time was minimal even though it was listed as back-ordered until April 2013. All I can say is WOW! I'm going to this turntable from a bargain USB turntable. There is no comparison. Set-up was easy using the instructions. I have a phono input on my Pioneer receiver, and the sound is amazing with no pre-amp. They say a good turntable and cartridge brings out the best in vinyl. I have to agree.

Pros: Straight forward set-up. great sound. nice fit and finish (red).

Cons: auto-return or stop at the end of a record would be nice.

work of art

Vic from Atlanta, GA on 2/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Iam hard to please for I expect what I buy to produce. Not only is the sound put out pure and highly detailed, the turntable is a work of art. The yellow glossy paint adds sunshine to my otherwise drab equipment setup. I was concerned it would stand out since it is right under my 15' big screen, but it disappears and is not noticeable. The tone arm is beautiful with its black dragon scale look. , If you can read and follow written directions and diagrams , set up is painless. The cable included had a ground cable making hook up a snap. I highly recommend this turntable. Its a deal. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: beautiful, simple, realistic sound, brings records to life again!

Cons: NONE!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received my Pro-ject Debut Carbon a couple weeks ago. I was delighted it came so soon since I was on backorder. The table arrived in immaculate condition and set-up was easy. Took less than ten minutes. I was back to listening to my favorite records in no time. First thing I noticed was how much quieter the table is compared to my old one. The one I used to have was a mostly metal construction and direct drive. You could touch almost anything on the table and it would transfer the sound to the needle. The Debut Carbon is a delightfully quiet piece with a brilliant playback. It combines elegance with performance. Just what I was looking for and at just the right price. Crutchfield also deserves some accolades. My advisor, Chris was very helpful in the ordering process and I was very pleased that the backorder didn't last very long. Shipping was very fast and I had an all-around great experience with Crutchfield. Will be doing business again.

Pros: Easy set-up. Great sound. Great price. Looks awesome.

This turntable is amazing for the price! I have been listening to vinyl for over 40 years, and it made all my old favorites come alive again. Replaced an outdated Technics SL-3200. Great stylus included!

Bill B from Colonial Heights, VA on 11/17/2012

I ordered this recently open box from Crutchfield and it arrived promptly as promised, right at the beginning of Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately, our area was not hard hit. The black looks nice and I saw no defects. I have not had a turntable for many years but had several during the 60's-70's. This reminds me a little of the manual AR model. If you want a model that turns itself off at the end of the album, you will need what I think they still call an automatic turntable. This is described as an entry level audiophile turntable. I cannot judge that because my system is far from that quality (an Onkyo receiver about 8-10 years old and Infinity Entra bookshelf speakers). However, it works and I am happy. My only complaint is that the instructions are abysmal. It is easily set up, but I could not figure out how at attach the anti-skating weight until I searched online. The weight comes with a length of what looks like small fishing line with a loop on one end attached to the weight. You loop the end of the line over the protrusion from the back of the tonearm (at the second of three small notches). Then you drape the line over an upright hook beside the tonearm and let the weight swing free. You may want a stylus weight gauge. I found the weight adjustment hard to get right and wanted to have the weight set properly for the best sound. You may also want an antistatic brush for the records and maybe a record cleaner of some type. Vinyl is much more user intensive than a cd!

Pros: Simple basic design and setup. Looks good-my open box was in black but I think the red would look great. Great reviews for sound quality under $1,000. A step up from the earlier model: has an improved tonearm and upgraded cartridge. I bought an indoor-outdoor remote control power cord for about $15.00 (designed to turn off Christmas trees by remote control). It works fine to control my turntable, receiver and floor lamp from the bed, since this has no remote.

Cons: Set up instructions for the anti-skating weight had me stymied. The gloss black does show dust. The on-off switch is a simple rocker switch under the left side front as facing the unit. A person not familiar with the switch location will be unable to turn it off and on. For those accustomed to remote controls and auto turnoff at the end of the record, this manual model will take some adjustment (but the best turntables, to the best of my knowledge, are manual).

The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon has exceeded my expectations. Craftsmanship is flawless and it tracks flawlessly with the included Ortofon 2M cartridge! Setup was a breeze and Crutchfield customer support was great as always. My only gripe is that it isn't supplied with an RCA cable.

Pros: Good looks, solid performance.

Coda Blue from San Antonio on 9/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I freaked twice during installation. That's unbelievable! Everything was there. The anti-skating weight's "thread" is attached to the weight, already! The tonearm counter wieght is packaged by itself so check DEEP. That's it! I'm chilling with Kirk Brandon. The machine is so shabby shiek cool. I am very sold on Crutchfield. Oh, they were less expensive AND used the higher end cartridge. Others were using the OM 10. The 2M is twice as much at $100.00. Do your research ladies...

Pros: Sound, looks, sound, looks, sound...easy to use and set-up...sound....

Cons: I would own this if I was a billionairre. Just like my scoot. That's the cool thing about music and'd own the same thing, anyway. Enjoy NOW!

Amazing table for the money

Frank S. from Clifton Park, NY on 8/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this table to replace a Thorens TD166 MKII and I was worried that I might be taking a step back. Not one bit! The table is a breeze to set up, looks stunning and sounds even better. Nearly dead quite for the noise floor and the carbon tonearm + 2M Red combo is very capable. tracking was great, dynamics were improved over the Thorens and a much more controlled sound stage. Vocals were much better placed. Plus this table is easily upgradable with the acrylic platter and speedbox. As usual Crutchfield was nothing but amazing as well. Ordered on a Monday, on my doorstep on Wednesday. Packaging was solid as usual.

Pros: Great value, easy set up, sounds amazing.

Cons: None

DavidL from Lopez Island, WA on 7/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A beautifully designed turntable. I did have some trouble setting the downforce and rigging the anti-skating weight, but that may be at least in part due to my general clumsiness. My collection of LPs - some of which are over fifty years old - still sound wonderful. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Cons: Anti-skating weight is tricky to install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good value. Ortofon 2M Red on the Debut Carbon is a very nice upgrade from the Debut III. Setup was a little challenging but I found several very specific videos on YouTube that were helpful. Once setup, this turntable sounds fantastic. I am using it with a new Yamaha R-S 700 Reciever and some vintage Realistic Nova 8B speakers. Overall it works great together.

Pros: Great looks and quality for the price. Excellent sound and very solid feel.

Cons: Instructions for setup were pretty vague with very few illustrations. However, there are many online resources that are very helpful.

Resonance-Reducing Construction: The attractive resonance-reducing MDF plinth supports a heavier 300mm diameter metal platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Additionally, a felt record mat is employed for superior record support and coupling. The platter and plinth assembly sits upon four-point "O"-ring feet designed for energy absorption and the plinth-mounted motor is isolated by a new Sorbothane suspension keeping unwanted noise and vibration to a bare minimum. The motor is even decoupled from the plinth to reduce vibration transmission.

Note: The turntable should be positioned on a low-resonance surface such as wood or multiple layer ply-board to avoid structural vibrations disturbing replay.

High-Fidelity Sound: The 8.6" single-piece tube carbon fiber tone-arm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your vinyl recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red moving magnet (MM) phono cartridge by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is capable of exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the records grooves.

Belt Driven: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon features a quiet running AC motor with a two-step pulley which drives the hub and platter via a flat-ground belt. The Debut Carbon supports 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds.

RCA Output Jacks: Plinth mounted RCA output jacks allow for the use of higher quality interconnects for even better sonic performance. Connect the turntable to the Phono input of your home receiver.

Note: If your receiver does not have a suitable Phono MM input, a separate phono pre-amplifier (sold separately) is required to connect the turntable to your amplifier.

Dust Cover: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon comes supplied with a dust cover to prevent dust build-up on the turntable.

AC Power Adapter: The turntable operates off of standard household current using the supplied external AC power adapter.

Hi Tim, Many older receivers and integrated amps feature a phono stage. My NAD integrated amp is about 8 yrs old and didn't come with a phono stage. Along with the Pro-ject Carbon I purchased NADs PP4 Digital USB Pre-Amp for $199.00. The PP4 unit is small, well-built, and well-reviewed and easy to set up. [ Mike  Apr 10, 2014 ]
Yes you need a preamp with this turntable and most modern receivers. Project does offer the same turntable with a preamp and USB input. [ Keith  Mar 22, 2014 ]
Yes you will need a pre amp for this. [ Charles  Mar 21, 2014 ]
If your receiver has a phono connection you don't otherwise you will need one. [ JOHN M  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Yes you do. [ DAVID  Mar 21, 2014 ]
If your amp or receiver has a phono stage no, if not you need a pre amp. this table is very basic no bells very simple to operate, strickly manual. [ ROBERT  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Yes. You will need to connect to a phono preamp. However, if you get the Pro-ject Debut Carbon Gloss Red with the USB option, a phono preamp is builtin to the unit and which means you will get line level outputs as well as a USB output. This option is usually an extra $100. [ ROSS  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Yes, you do, unless your receiver has a dedicated phono input, which many modern models do not. [ tom  Mar 21, 2014 ]
If your receiver does not have a phono input you will need a pre-amp. [ JAMES P  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Yes, unless your receiver has a phono input [ Michael  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Whether you need a pre amp isn't about the turntable, it's about the amp that you're connecting the table to. Unless you have high end equipment the amp/receiver is all contained in the thing. Plug it in and play. [ JOHN  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Yes you will need a pre amp. [ THERIN  Mar 21, 2014 ]
Since the clear cover is closed the vast majority of the time, I don't think the color of the base makes much difference. I do think the the lighter background color probably makes it less noticeable than the gloss black, bright red, etc. would look. It does get dusty quickly in my home, but that will happen with any large flat surface, as I don't run air filters indoors as the windows are open all summer. I bought this color and have been very happy with it, and with crutchfeild overall. Sound quality is great, setup of the arm would have been tricky without YouTube instruction video. Have fun [ FRED  Sep 26, 2014 ]
This turntable comes with a hinged dust cover that covers the entire top. You don't have to worry about that. The silver finish is glossy though. [ Dominick  Sep 08, 2014 ]
Hi houston d, I purchased the Red one. I live in a VERY dusty area and have seen no real dust problem. My two black amps and MacIntosh Pre get very dusty in just a few days. The turn table comes with a smoked gray dust cover, so 90% of the dust is on the cover and easily wiped off with a damp towel. Hope this helped...the TT sounds unbelievable for the price...I have heard $1,000 Tables sound similar. I would also consider a NAD Phono pre-amp from Crutchfield...This will really make the Debut sound wonderful. Jim [ JAMES P  Sep 01, 2014 ]
I have the gloss silver Pro-Ject Carbon. It's great. No dust collection, very nice, simple design and like you didn't want a "loud" color. [ Gregory  Aug 30, 2014 ]
The silver is a great color and does not show dust. The plastic cover will show fingerprints but cleans easily. [ EVA  Aug 30, 2014 ]
I have this turntable in my office at home. It is glossy not flat, but I have had mine for 5 months and have not had to dust it once. I do like this turntable and the premounted cartridge. I would get the speedbox this makes life much simpler if you are going to play 45's. I also helps with the sound quality. I am still thinking about getting the acrylic platter later. (Note the dust cover is a little stiff which I like, so it does not drop accidently.) I would highly give it two thumbs up. It comes with nice rubber feet that dampen the sound very well. [ James Stephen  Aug 30, 2014 ]
It is glossy, but not as glossy as the red one. I guess you can categorize it as semi gloss. It blends in nicely with my white custom made entertainment cabinet. [ UMUT  Aug 30, 2014 ]
No more or less than other components. This is glossy, but understated compared to say red or yellow. Perfect for me. [ MADHUP  Aug 30, 2014 ]
Great table and does not collect an inordinate amout of dust. Much less than black. It is semi glossy but very subtle and looks great with black receiver. [ ERIC  Aug 30, 2014 ]
The turntable ships with a dust cover, and I haven't noticed it gather dust any more than my previous TT. The silver IS glossy, but it's not as reflective as the white, red, or piano black. The silver is definitely not overwhelming. One piece of advice -- if you do buy this turntable from Crutchfield, don't buy a speed box for it unless you can confirm that you're get a 16V debut carbon. The one I got from Crutchfield was 15V, which is technically the European wiring made to work for the American market. The voltage difference causes the hum that you read about on a ton of forums. [ Juan  Aug 30, 2014 ]
I have the Gloss Silver Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and it indeed has a glossy/lacquered surface but isn't very loud as you say. As far as dust, it does tend to collect bits of dust, especially if you are using a brush but it's very easy to clean off. Leaving the clear dust cover down when not in use helps keep the plinth itself relatively dust free. [ Brian  Aug 30, 2014 ]
The finish is not very glossy and I have not noticed a dust issue. That said I have the cover on mine and it is on a book case with a shelf over top of the turntable which probably helps a little with the dust. [ Sheryl  Aug 30, 2014 ]
Sorry I don't know. [ Stanley  May 31, 2014 ]
I now control the on & off and speed with a "Pro-ject Speed Box S" and it uses a tranformer type plug that is 18V neg)-pos cable which I would think you could find a replacement part that has a euro plug but the same 18V current. it wouldn't hurt to email "PRO-JECT" from their website as I know that would email you back with a answer. I don't see why not -with the proper plug of course. [ ROBERTA  May 31, 2014 ]
