About the Etymotic Research ER4XR
Audiophile-grade IEMs with a touch of bass
Audiophile-grade IEMs with a touch of bass
Etymotic Research has earned a reputation among musicians, sound engineers, and audiophiles alike for their dedication to sound. The company's in-ear monitors (IEMs) are precise "tools of the trade," portraying music exactly as the artist intended, with minimal coloration. The ER4XR is Etymotic's "fun" in-ear monitor: it reproduces your music with pinpoint accuracy in the mid and high frequencies, but also adds a subtle hint of extra bass for richer sound.
Balanced armature drivers in a precision-machined shell
The balanced armature driver in each earbud is housed in an anodized aluminum shell that's been precisely CNC-machined with tight tolerances. The biggest benefit of using a balanced armature driver is that it allows for accurate sound reproduction and clarity without needing a crossover network. It also allows Etymotic to keep the anodized aluminum housing small, slim, and lightweight. Best of all, the drivers are matched very closely to one another — within 1 dB across frequencies from 100 to 10,000 Hz, for pinpoint balance and stereo imaging.
Special tuning for tight, punchy bass
The ER4XR has little extra bass added to its frequency response to satisfy audiophiles who need some low-end kick. These IEMs are by no means bass heavy, however. More specifically, Etymotic added 1 to 2 dB to the mid-bass frequencies and 3 to 4 dB to the lower-bass and sub-bass frequencies. That's just enough of a bump to keep your music energetic and engaging without the low frequencies overshadowing the mix. The mids and highs are tuned to be as precise and as flat as possible.
Sound backed by science
Etymotic spent more than 20 years getting their IEM frequency response curve down to a science. The company did in-depth testing and research on the acoustics of the ear and human hearing in general. That research allowed them to tune their IEMs so the sound hitting your eardrums is identical to that of the original performance.

Overview: The Etymotic ER4XT-BT contains the ER4XT Extended Response in-ear monitors and the Etymotion BT Cable to give you a wireless experience like no other. The Bluetooth module contains a built-in DAC and headphone amplifier. The package comes with 10 pairs of ear tips, a zippered storage pouch and a zippered storage case.
IEMs: The ER4XT Extended Response in-ear monitors feature a single, high-performance Balanced Armature driver for accurate performance. Having a single BA driver allows the CNC-machined, anodized aluminum housing to be small and slim because there's no need for a crossover. The ER4XR "Extended Response" model is tuned with a little added bass: 1dB to 2dB in the mid-bass frequencies (below 200Hz), and 3dB to 4dB to the lower-bass and sub-bass (below 100Hz). Because of Etymotic's years of human hearing expertise and acoustic research, a natural resonance was discovered inside the average ear canal because IEMs bypass the outer ear. To compensate for that resonance, a slightly higher SPL was needed in the lower treble (2-5kHz) range in order to create a perceptively flat frequency response.
Matched IEMs: The ER4XT right and left channels are matched within 1dB across the frequency band of 100Hz to 10kHz. A Certificate of Performance is included, showing graphs of the individual channel's frequency response and the deviation between the channels over the frequency spectrum. Specs showing each channel's Sensitivity, THD, and Polarity are also provided on the certificate.
Passive Isolation: The Etymotic IEMs provide between up to 35dB attenuation of external noise with silicone ear tips and up to 42dB of attenuation with foam ear tips. By comparison, most custom IEMs provide 25-28dB of attenuation with silicone, and up to 32dB with foam. The ER4XTs come with four sizes of 3-flange silicone ear tips (S, M, L, XL), four sizes of 2-flange silicone ear tips (S, M, L, XL), and two pairs of foam ear tips.
Connectors: The ER4XT IEMs feature standard MMCX (micro-miniature coaxial) connectors. This allows you to connect them to passive audio cables, as well as the included Bluetooth module. The connector has a notch (or "key") that must be aligned with the tab on the cable's connector for a secure connection.
Filters: Included with the ER4XT are green plastic acoustic filters that fit inside the ear bud's nozzle. These ACCU-filters serve two purposes--to tune the sound and to protect the drivers. The filters deliver an accurate but neutral sound, while preventing ear wax and other debris from entering the ear bud through the nozzle. When one of the earphones start to sound muffled, the filter can be replaced using the included filter removal tool.
Etymotion BT Cable: The included Etymotion BT Cable makes the ER4XT-BT a truly wireless in-ear headphone. The cable features a Bluetooth 5.0 module with a dedicated DAC (digital-to-analog converter), headphone amplifier, and a built-in battery to power it. It has a range of 30 feet or more. The BT Cable supports Qualcomm's aptX and aptX HD codecs to let you enjoy 24-bit/48kHz lossless playback of your digital music files. Attached to the BT module are two 10" cables with MMCX plugs for connecting the IEMs. The Etymotion BT Cable is designed to be worn behind the head with the cables clipped to your clothing with the two included shirt clips.
DAC: The Etymotion BT Cable is equipped with the high quality AKM AK4331 stereo digital-to-analog converter with Velvet Sound technology. This ultra low-power 32-bit DAC has an integrated headphone amplifier to power the IEMs, providing a far superior wireless experience over most other Bluetooth headphones. AKM's Velvet Sound technology helps to provide an accurate recreation of the original sound.
In-line Remote/Microphone: The BT Cable features an in-line remote/mic on the right side cable. The 3-button remote features volume up and volume down buttons with a multi-function button in between. The multi-function button is used for power and pairing, as well as music playback (play/pause) and phone calls (answer/disconnect). Voice prompts indicate "power on," "power off," and "pairing." The built-in microphone picks up your voice for clear phone calls.
Battery: The BT Cable houses the rechargeable battery for powering Bluetooth and the headphone amp. The battery fully charges in approximately 3 hours via the included 11" Micro-USB cable. A fully-charged battery provides approximately 8 hours of wireless playback.
