Get big, bass-rich sound with remarkable playback versatility! In addition to being a complete, self-contained music system, JVC's HX-GD8 features DVD playback, so you can easily connect this shelf system to your TV and enjoy your favorite movies — no complicated wiring or tricky hookup required. Get ready for a sharp DVD picture and dynamic movie sound.

The HX-GD8 also does a great job with your tunes. The 5-disc changer plays most types of music discs, including CD-Rs and CD-RWs containing MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) files. Plus, you can take advantage of the single cassette deck and AM/FM tuner, and even hook up an additional source via the easily accessible front-panel aux input. That's a lot of entertainment options from one shelf system!

JVC packed the HX-GD8 with some serious audio muscle — dual amps dish out a whopping 550 watts of total system power. One amp powers the tweeters and dual woofers, while the second amp juices up the massive 7-7/8" subwoofers. You'll experience high-impact sound with impressive stereo separation. 3 EQ presets and 3 manual settings let you fine tune the sound, and you can control the low-frequency output using the 3-step bass control. With DVD movies, the selectable 3D Phonic mode deepens the soundstage for a simulated home theater effect. More power, more versatility, and more excitement — that's what the HX series from JVC is all about!

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Sources: The HX-GD8 is equipped with a 5-disc slim-tray DVD/CD changer, a single auto-reverse cassette, an AM/FM tuner, and a front panel stereo minijack input for an auxiliary source.

Dual Amplification: This unit has dual amplifiers for each speaker with 80 watts per channel for the main drivers and 195 watts per channel for the subwoofers.

Disc Compatibility: This unit will play DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CDs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs (recorded in Audio CD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, or JPEG format), and DVD-R and DVD-RWs (recorded in video format).

Disc Exchange: Since the discs are loaded into individual trays, you can exchange discs in any of the inactive trays without interrupting the currently playing disc.

Continuous Play: When discs are loaded in more than one tray, you can begin playback from any disc and the unit will play all discs continuously in numerical order until all discs are played.

On-Screen Display: During disc playback, the unit automatically outputs a control screen on your TV, either in the form of an On-Screen Bar, or a larger Control Screen. Disc status, chapter and track names or numbers, and time indicators, as well as indicators concerning multiple languages, subtitles, or view angles, appear on the On-Screen bar. The Control Screen appears during MP3, WMA, and JPEG file playback to indicate file, folder, track, and group information.

Program Play: Up to 99 tracks can be programmed and played in any order. Once the tracks are programmed, you can use Repeat Play to repeat only the programmed tracks or one individual track. During Program play, you cannot open any of the disc trays. The program is stored in memory, even if the unit is turned off. The program can be erased manually, or it will be erased if the AC power cord is unplugged or there's a power failure.

Repeat Play: The repeat modes for each disc type are as follows:

  • DVD Video:
    • During Playback: Chapter, Title, All
    • Before Playback: All
  • DVD Audio: Track, Group, All
  • MP3/WMA: Track, Group, Disc, All
    • During Playback: Track, Disc, All
    • During Program Play: Step, All
    • During Random Play: Step, Disc, All

Scanning Modes: If you have an HDTV-ready television, you can switch the component video output to Progressive Scan to enjoy a higher quality picture.

Random Play: The tracks on all of the loaded discs can be played at random. Random play will end when all of the tracks on all of the loaded discs have been played. You can also repeat all discs or one individual track during random play.

Tray Lock: This feature allows you to lock the disc trays to prohibit discs from being ejected.

Tape Recording: Using a Type I tape, you can record from a DVD, CD, the radio, or a connected auxiliary component. When recording from a DVD or CD, you can record the tracks in the order they appear on the disc or in the order you've programmed the tracks. When you are ready to record, you can press the Disc Rec Start button for synchronized recording. You can record on one side only, or set the unit to automatically reverse to record on both sides before stopping.

Tape Playback: You can playback tapes in either direction: forward or reverse. You can play both sides repeatedly (reverse mode), or set the player to stop at the end of the currently playing side.

AM/FM Tuner: This system has a digital AM/FM Tuner. You can store up to 45 station presets (30 FM and 15 AM) so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. The tuner has three tuning modes: Manual, Preset, and Auto (seek) tuning. If you are listening to an FM station in stereo and the reception is weak, you can improve the sound quality by switching to Mono.

Compu-Play: This unit features Compu-Play control. When you press the source button (FM/AM, CD Play/Pause, Tape Play), the unit automatically powers up and begins playback from the selected source. When you press the Aux button, the unit will power up and switch to Aux Input, but you will need to manually start playback on the connected component.

Sound Modes: This system has 3 surround modes and 3 Sound Effect Amplifier (SEA) modes, allowing you to adjust the quality of sound depending on the source you are using. You can select from the following surround modes: Dance (increases resonance and bass), Hall (adds depth and brilliance to the sound), or Stadium (adds clarity and spreads the sound). You can select from the following Sound Effect Amplifier modes: Rock (boosts the low and high frequencies; good for acoustic music), Pop (good for vocal music), or Classic (good for classical music).

User Modes: You can create your own individual SEA sound modes and store them in one of three User Modes. You can set the bass and treble bands from -3 to +3, plus add surround effects to your SEA pattern by selecting one of the surround modes. The User Modes are stored in memory unless the unit is disconnected from power for more than a few days.

3D Phonic Modes: You can select one of three 3D Phonic Modes:

  • 3D Action: suitable for action movies and sports programs
  • 3D Drama: creates natural and warm sound, letting you enjoy movies in a relaxed mood.
  • 3D Theater: enjoy sound effects like in a major theater

DVD Levels: The audio tracks on a DVD Video is sometimes recorded at a lower level than for other discs and sources. You can select one of three increased DVD Levels (DVD Level 1, 2 or 3), so you don't have to adjust the volume every time you change the source.

Subwoofer Level Control: You can independently adjust the subwoofer level to one of three settings: Level 0, 1, or 2.

Picture Tone: You can select a preset picture tone (Normal or Cinema), or store your own picture settings in one of two memory settings (User 1 or 2). The picture settings you can adjust and store include Gamma, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Tint, and Sharpness.

Rhythm Ax: Similar to a Loudness function, Rhythm Ax emphasizes the bass attack feeling, plus raises the subwoofer level to 2 (maximum) during playback. If you switch to a sound mode or lower the subwoofer level, Rhythm Ax is turned off.

Daily Timer: You can use the daily timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a cassette, a DVD or CD, the radio, or a connected auxiliary component at a preset volume level. Once the timer is active, it will operate everyday at the set time. Note: If the daily timer is set to come on while the recording timer is operating, the daily timer will not come on at all.

Recording Timer: Once daily, you can record from a preset radio station to the cassette deck. The timer allows you to specify a start and stop time. Note: The recording timer has priority over the daily timer.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the system off after a specified amount of time so you can fall asleep without worrying about the stereo being left on all night. The sleep timer can be set to 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes. Note: If the recording timer is set to come on while the sleep timer is operating, the timer with the earlier shut-off time will have priority.

Fade Muting: When you push the mute button on the remote, the volume drops gradually until it reaches "zero". When the mute is disabled, the volume gradually increases until it reaches the original volume level. Note: The volume drops from maximum to zero in approximately 3 seconds.

Beep Tones: Each time you press a button or turn a control, the unit will beep. This function can be turned off if you desire.

Display: The large multi-color display features a 10-band level meter which moves with the music, and gradually lights up as the volume is increased. The alphanumeric display indicates the sound modes, disc track and elapsed time, MP3/WMA disc group, file and time info, tape record or playback direction, and the tuner band and frequency. There are also numerous icons indicating timer status and playback modes.

Remote Control: The unit comes with a wireless remote control with a numeric keypad. Several features can be enabled solely with the remote, such as fade muting, direct track access, direct preset tuning, and FM mono/stereo switching. The dimensions of the remote are: Length=7", Width=1.902", Depth=0.909".

Speaker Design: The HX-GD8 includes two mirror-image 3-way, 4-driver speakers in a bass-reflex enclosure. Each speaker uses a 2" paper cone tweeter, two 5-3/8" poly cone woofers, and a side-firing 7-7/8" paper cone subwoofer. Each speaker is bi-amplified (with 195 watts for the subwoofer, plus 80 watts for the woofers and tweeter) so your music stays clear when it gets loud.

  • Frequency Response:
    • Subwoofer: 30-970 Hz
    • Main Speakers: 75-25,000 Hz
  • Sensitivity:
    • Subwoofer: 83dB
    • Main Speakers: 88dB
  • Impedance: 6 ohms (subwoofer and main speakers)
  • Dimensions: Width= 9.224", Height= 17.8125", Depth= 15.9375"
  • Weight: 22.1 pounds (each)

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Bi-Amplified Speaker Terminals: The HX-GD8 features 4 color-coded spring clip speaker terminals for each speaker--one pair for the subwoofer, and one pair for the main speaker drivers. The subwoofer and the main speakers are separately amplified.

Auxiliary Input: You can connect another piece of equipment such as a portable Minidisc or TV to the unit's front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input.

Video Outputs: You can connect this unit to a TV using any of the three video output jacks. For your convenience, the unit is equipped with Composite, S-Video, and Component Video jacks.

Optical Digital Output: The unit can output multi-channel encoded audio signals through the optical digital output on the rear panel. To enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS surround, you can connect the unit to a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder or receiver.

AV Compulink: The AV Compulink control system allows the HX-GD8 to control a JVC TV. When you start disc playback, the unit sends a control signal via the AV Compulink cable (a cable with mono miniplugs on each end), turning on the TV and switching the TV input to the proper mode for viewing the video.
