MP3 Playback: The KD-AR400 can play MP3 files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc.
Custom Equalizer (C-EQ): In addition to manual bass and treble settings (-10dB to +10dB @ 100Hz and 10kHz), this unit also has six selectable preset tone control and loudness setting combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:
- Rock: Bass = +3, Treble = +1, Loudness = On
- Classic: Bass = +1, Treble = -2, Loudness = Off
- Pops: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
- Hip Hop: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
- Jazz: Bass = +2, Treble = +3, Loudness = Off
- User: Bass = 0, Treble = 0, Loudness = Off
Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AR400 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low", the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high", and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.
One Touch Operation: Pressing a source button (CD/Changer/AM/FM) turns the unit on and selects the source.
Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can turn on/off the demo mode, set the clock, turn on/off the level display, select the dimmer mode and the text scroll mode, select the external component type (changer, Sirius or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display and set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low).
Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's proprietary HS-II tuner. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. Note: Although it is not discussed in the manual, you can select either U.S. standard or European tuning spacing.
Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).
+10/-10 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or an MP3 file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32.
Disc Eject Prohibit: This feature keeps the disc from ejecting even if the eject button is pushed. The disc eject prohibit feature is engaged/disengaged by pressing the CD and power buttons simultaneously for more than 2 seconds.
Dimmer Function: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Note: For Auto to work, this unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's headlamp circuit.
Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.
RM-RK60 Remote Control: The unit is equipped with the RM-RK60 wireless remote control. The dimensions of the remote are: L=3.63", W=1.414", D=0.348". This 9-button remote can control the following functions:
- Volume Up/Down
- Power On/Off
- Source select
- Mute On/Off
- Custom EQ settings
- Track skip
- Track search forward/reverse
- Radio station search
- Preset station select
- Radio band select
Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.
Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access, direct folder access (for MP3 discs), track repeat, folder repeat (MP3 only), disc repeat, disc random, folder random (MP3 only), and all disc random.
Compatibility with Optional AUX Input Adapter: The optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MD player, to this unit as an additional audio source. Item 105KSU57 connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the aux input adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.
