General Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV4200 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. MP3 files with a bit rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 32-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 3500 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the KD-DV4200 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-JVC1 Satellite Tuner for JVC (item # 607SIRJVC1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for JVC (209XMDJVC1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Custom Equalizer (cEQ): In addition to manual bass and treble settings (-6dB to +6dB @ 100Hz and 10kHz), this unit also has six selectable preset tone control and loudness setting combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:

  • Rock: Bass = +3, Treble = +1, Loudness = On
  • Classic: Bass = +1, Treble = -2, Loudness = Off
  • Pops: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
  • Hip Hop: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
  • Jazz: Bass = +2, Treble = +3, Loudness = Off
  • User: Bass = 0, Treble = 0, Loudness = Off

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-DV4200 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Station Naming: The KD-DV4200 allows you to assign names of up to 8 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum).

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

+10/-10 and +100/-100 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or an MP3 file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons on the remote. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32. For MP3/WMA tracks with a number greater than 99, use the +100/-100 buttons.

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 105KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter (item # 257KSPD100) allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-DV4200. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-DV4200.

Clock Display: When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

DVD/Video CD Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV4200 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs. The disc must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format. Discs must be created on a computer with a DVD burner. The DVD burner software application must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format.

Note: DVDs recorded on stand alone consumer DVD burners are not compatible with this unit.

Direct Access: You can directly access any title or chapter on a DVD, and any track on a Video CD.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types:

  • 16:9 (Multi): select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 (Multi) Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
  • 4:3 (Multi) Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on the screen.

Scan Search: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 60x).

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five slow motion speeds in both directions (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or current title. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track or the entire disc.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Zoom: When playing DVDs or Video CDs, you can enlarge the picture using the zoom feature. You can choose one of six zoom settings. Once the image is enlarged, you can move the image around on the screen.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Digital Audio Output: You can choose the type of signal that passes through the optical digital output:

  • PCM Only: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Dolby Digital/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital
  • Stream/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Optical Digital Output: The optical digital output on the rear of the unit allows you to connect an optional digital audio processor.

Video Output: The RCA composite video jack allows you to connect an optional monitor.
