Into radio? The KD-SHX900 includes a built-in HD Radio tuner that hauls in digital audio broadcasts from participating stations you'll enjoy near-CD-quality music on FM stations and FM-like clarity on AM stations. If there are no HD Radio stations in your area yet, JVC's DiAS digital AM/FM tuner delivers powerful analog reception with a full-bodied stereo sound.
A powerful MOSFET internal amp (19 watts RMS/50 peak x 4) reproduces your tunes precisely, while the built-in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) affords total control over the sound. Choose from seven ambience modes to alter the acoustic atmosphere. Select one of the three types of vehicle interiors to help the receiver correct for speaker placement within your car. The versatile KD-SHX900 plays MP3 and WMA discs, along with your CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Whatever you listen to, Digital BBE® processing enhances the clarity of mids and highs, so you get more detail from your music. You can adjust the sound with the 7-band equalizer and twelve preset EQ curves (including 3 user-defined).
The receiver includes three sets of gold-plated preamp outputs that send a super-clean 5-volt signal to external amps in your system. You also get controls for JVC's 12-disc CD/MP3 changer, an auxiliary input for hooking up a portable player, and a wireless remote.

EXAD: The JVC Arsenal KD-SHX900 belongs to a selection of JVC receivers called EXAD (EXcellence through ADvanced technology). This receiver has special features, such as a motorized faceplate with custom graphics and a new digital tuner, to set it apart from other receivers.
Motorized Faceplate: The KD-SHX900 features a fully motorized faceplate with multiple-angle display capabilities. The faceplate automatically slides out when inserting or ejecting a CD. In addition, you can set the angle of the faceplate to one of four positions for best visibility.
OEL Display: The KD-SHX900 has a 256-color, photograph-quality OEL display.
Personalized Image Capture Technology (PICT): Using the supplied Image Converter (Color) software, you can produce custom images to display on the receiver's screen. Not only can you display still images, but you can modify images so that they in effect become a mini-animated movie. Customizing the images is simple and straight forward. First, you need to capture images by downloading them from the Internet or recording them with digital equipment, like a camcorder or camera. Next, using the Image Converter (Color) software, you can edit the images and convert them to PICT-compatible graphic data. Image Converter (Color) generates a new file suitable for the head unit's display without changing the source image. After the editing has been completed, the images can then be burned onto a CD-R disc. Finally, the images can be transferred to the head unit from the CD-R disc. (See below for minimum computer requirements for the Image Converter (Color) Software.)
Still Images: Pictures can be created and downloaded into the receiver and used for the graphic screen. A total of 18 still images can be shown one at a time as a static image or in a slide show fashion.
Image Link: When an MP3 folder includes an image file edited by Image Converter (Color), you can show the image on the display while the tracks in the folder are played back.
Demonstration Mode: The unit goes into Display Demonstration if no operation is performed for about 20 seconds. You can select the following Demonstration Modes: Demo (displays the demonstration), Image Link, or Off.
Wallpaper: You can choose one of the following background screens: Standard 1 (grid pattern), Standard 2 (geometric shapes), or Standard 3 (sunset).
Window: The window display allows you to show the following: Window 1 (two level gauges that look like tachometers), Window 2 (two horizontal level meters), Window 3 (planet with surrounding stars), or Window 4 (cityscape with blinking lights).
Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed).
Note: For Auto to work, this unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's headlamp circuit.
Source Naming: You can assign names of up to 16 characters to 30 station frequencies (FM and AM), up to 32 characters for 40 discs (both in the head unit and in the CD changer), and up to 16 characters for the external component connected to the line input.
Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set up to 15 operational and display items, including: Demo/Link, Wallpaper, Window, Picture, Clock hour, Clock minute, Clock system (24/12 hour clock display), Scroll mode, Dimmer, Brightness, Tag display, IF filter, External input, Beep, and Amp gain.
MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-SHX900 can play MP3 and WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo.
Subwoofer Output: The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of Low (55 Hz), Medium (85 Hz), or High (115 Hz).
Rear Auxiliary Input: The KD-SHX900 features a set of Line Input jacks (Left and Right RCAs) on a 7" pigtail attached to the rear panel. This allows you to connect a portable CD, MP3, MiniDisc, Video Game or Computer to the receiver.
Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has "Hard Rock", "R&B", "Pop", "Jazz", "Dance", "Country", "Reggae", "Classic", "User 1", "User 2", "User 3", and "Flat" preset EQ curves. "User 1", "User 2", and "User 3" presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60Hz, 150Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.4kHz, 6kHz, and 12kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.
DSP Modes: You can choose from the following DSP modes: Theater, Hall, Club, Dome, Studio, or Voice Cancel (reduces the vocal sounds). Once a DSP mode is chosen, you can adjust the following settings to optimize performance in your vehicle:
- Number of Speakers: allows you to choose if your vehicle has 2 speakers or 4 speakers
- Seat Position: allows you to choose All (for all front and rear seats), Front (for both front seats), Right Front (for the front right seat), or Left Front (for the front left seat)
- Car Size: if your vehicle has 4 speakers, you can choose from the following car size settings: Middle, Large, or Compact
Compression Compensative Converter: The Compression Compensative Converter eliminates jitter and ripples, achieving a drastic reduction in digital distortion. This processing can be applied to both digital and analog sources.
BBE Digital: BBE Digital adjusts the relationship between the low, mid, and high frequencies by adding a progressively longer delay time to the low and mid frequencies, so that all frequencies reach your ear at the proper time.
Source Volume Adjustment: You can adjust the input level each source to match it to the FM sound level so you will not need to adjust the volume level each time you change sources. The range of adjustment is -5 to +5. This adjustment is memorized for each source except FM.
Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-SHX900 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low", the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high", and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. You can also turn off the internal amplifier with this control when you are using external amplifiers for all your speakers.
HD Radio: The KD-SHX900 is equipped with a built-in HD Radio tuner, which allows you to listen to new digital AM and FM broadcasts from their favorite local stations (where available), while still receiving analog broadcasts. With HD radio technology, FM broadcasts sound as good as CDs and AM broadcasts sound as good as FM, all without the static, hiss, pops and fading of analog radio. You can tune the stations broadcasting in HD at the same frequencies on the dial as the analog stations. In addition, HD Radio broadcasts will also include artist name and song title, stock and news information, and local traffic and weather, which appear on the receiver's display.
DiAS Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's new Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner, offering unprecedented analog radio performance with higher sensitivity and selectivity. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.
Note: Although it is not discussed in the manual, you can select either U.S. standard or European tuning spacing.
List Screens: When the tuner is selected, you can list the 6 station presets for each band on one display screen. The presets are displayed by frequency or assigned name. When playing an MP3 or WMA disc, you can list all of the folders on the display (6 at a time) and select a desired folder. You can also display all of the files (6 at a time) of a selected folder, and select a desired file. When playing a standard CD, the tracks cannot be listed.
Disc Eject Prohibit: This feature keeps the disc from ejecting even if the eject button is pushed.
RM-RK300 Remote Control: The unit is equipped with the RM-RK300 compact wireless remote control. The dimensions of the remote are: L=3.925", W=1.343", D=0.617". This 13-button remote (including number buttons 1 through 6) can control the following functions:
- Volume Up/Down
- Power On/Off/Attenuate
- Control panel angle adjust
- Source select
- Track/file skip (CD + changer)

Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.
Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access, direct folder access (for MP3 discs), track repeat, folder repeat (MP3 only), disc repeat, disc random, folder random (MP3 only), and all disc random.
