About the Crutchfield ReadyHarness™ Service

Save time and effort

Maybe you're incredibly busy. Maybe you just aren't handy with tools. Maybe you don't know that when you buy a car stereo from Crutchfield, we include a vehicle-specific wiring harness that you will have to connect to the wiring harness that comes with your car stereo. Crutchfield now offers a connection service for these harnesses, even for sophisticated wiring interfaces often required to retain important safety and entertainment features. When you purchase our ReadyHarness service, we will open up your new car stereo, remove its wiring harness, then connect it — wire by wire — to the vehicle-specific harness (included with your package) that plugs into your vehicle's wiring. We will wire up every available connection that we can between the wiring interface and radio, and we will make connections for any steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately) that might be needed — but keep in mind that you may have to make some further connections directly into your vehicle's wiring. The Crutchfield ReadyHarness is then packed back with your car stereo, so you'll be able to plug one end into the car stereo and the other into your vehicle.

ReadyHarness

          Potential crisis...

What's involved?

We use a custom-tooled industrial crimping machine to ensure that your ReadyHarness will stand the test of time... and summertime temperatures inside your car! Our wiring pro consults the wiring diagrams for your car stereo and for your vehicle to make sure that every connection is correct. Of course, we can't make connections from your car stereo to wires in your car that are sometimes needed (like certain connections for a steering wheel control adapter or a parking brake wire for a DVD receiver), so you may have to connect a few wires for more complex applications.

ReadyHarness

         Crisis averted!

Why should I do this?

A Crutchfield ReadyHarness saves you significant time, effort, and potential heartache. In the past, you'd have to sit down with a crimping tool or soldering iron, match up the two harnesses wire by wire, according to function, and then make secure connections. Now, the ReadyHarness is ready to rock the minute you open up your new car stereo. And you'll avoid the pain of turning on your new radio only to find out that you've wired it incorrectly.

Please note!

Please remember that it'll take some time for us to build your ReadyHarness, so plan on your new car stereo arriving at least a day later than usual.

Listen to our customers

"I am absolutely thrilled at finally getting the wiring harness and vehicle adapter connected properly. It certainly significantly reduces the installation time/effort. Not sure why you didn't start this years ago."  — Bob M.

"Unless you do this often, why take the time and the chance that a connection is not correct? Then the time to figure out what wire is not working, etc.? You all fixed me up with one wiring harness. I plug into the radio and two plugs on the other end directly into the car. Swap a radio in 15 minutes. How cool is that?" — #crimpinainteasy

"Just wanted to drop you an email and say your adapter/stereo harness worked perfectly! I cut the installation time by at least 1.5 hours enlisting your service! Thanks again for a great job."  — Tom L.

"AMAZING!!  I was a Crutchfield  guy back in the day, installing various car stereos in my cars.  There always was chopping, wiring and a fair amount of brain surgery.  I just installed a JVC CD player in my wife's Honda Accord in 15 minutes, thanks to your prewired loom and excellent instructions!
Thanks again for a painless process!!!"  —  Ethan S.

Absolutely Fantastic Option!!!!!

DONALD from Alpharetta on 8/6/2019

2003 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The ReadyHarness Service was absolutely an AWESOME option! I'm so glad I ordered it. I was extremely anxious about installing a radio in a Mercedes Benz AND keep the steering wheel control functions. Mercedes also seems to have added complexity to their electronics and I was not looking forward to having to decode MB schematics, or cut and splice into the MB harness. I made the request to have the steering wheel integration kit also pre wired into the Ready Harness as it seemed that it may not automatically be wired as such. The harness plugged in perfectly to the car's three harness plugs and after making the other simple connections, I powered up the car and the radio and viola'...radio worked perfectly, AND the steering wheel controls functioned flawlessly!!! No programming, and no wire splicing. ...just fantastic! I would HIGHLY recommend having Crutchfield prepare the harness for super simple installation...the wiring was not a cheap option and that would be my only complaint. The service and quality however were perfect. THANKS Crutchfield!

Pros: Super Easy. High Quality wiring job. Steering wheel control operated flawlessly!

Cons: A bit expensive relative to the cost of the radio.

I'm generally pretty good at troubleshooting wiring and am capable but to have this done, worry free and everything work as it should at installation is absolutely worth the price to me. I was also pleasantly surprised when I put in reverse and the screen for a rear camera popped up, even though I don't have one installed (yet).

Pros: Everything worked as it should, plug and play at its best.

Cons: None yet.

Made job easier but needs improvement

2014 Volkswagen Passat

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Using this to review harness and Crutchfield in general. For harness was fine for connecting to radio. However as far as connecting to purchased backup cam in same order no ready harness connection included. IT would have been great if as part of this service they added a spliced to power from radio with a quick connect and quick connect added on power cord on backup cam. As far as Crutchfield purchasing. Was disapointed that they did not indicate during ordering that existing USB connection and Factory hands free mic would not be able to utilzie with the install. When called was told that is just how it is and to eitehr put on visor or tape to stearing wheel. However after research found a replacement factory type mic to run to radio. That purchase from a different company made the install looked very professional instead of dangling a mic on visor or sterring wheel. Suprised that Crutchfield doesn't offer that product.

Pros: Worked for radio

Cons: Could use improvmeents in process when getting radio and other devices that power from radio. Also was a bit disapointed with Crutchfield lack of knowledge and products to make install truly professional.

Don't order this. It will delay your shipping by 2 days when all it takes is 20-30 minutes to do yourself. And there's supposed to be a pop up that tells you that it will delay your shipping but no pop up appeared. Really put a huge dent in my schedule.

Pros: Saves installation time

Cons: Delays shipping by 2 days.

Don't even ponder on this one, BUY this service. It's a complete no-brainer and was plug and play. Crutchfield wired everything for me, the vehicle harness, the radio, steering wheel controls, they also plugged everything into the correct ports. All I did was pop out the old radio, plug in the new one and it was ready to roll. Even though I could wire the radio and have done many in the past, I'll never do it again. AWESOMENESS!!!!

This is a service I wish Crutchfield had offered when I first started buying from them. I have color vision deficiency - I see colors, I just can't tell what they are. For 20 or more Crutchfield radios I would sit with a friend and label all the wires by color and then do the same with the harness in the car. Even then I would manage to cross connect something. With this harness service the install was less than 5 minutes. Even if you are not color challenged, the service is a great help with the install.

While this service doesn't get you out of doing some splicing, it gets you out of the majority of it. There were a lot of unused wires and a few adapters that could have been cut out of this harness. Crutchfield leaves them there -- unsure if that's because they can't be sure on their end or if it just saves them time. It did, however, make it confusing to figure out which wires / adapters were for my truck and which ones weren't going to be used. To improve this service, eliminate the unneeded wires/adapters. That gives less room needed behind the receiver and makes the installation easier for your customers.

Pros: Eliminates most splicing on your end.

Cons: Somewhat costly.

What a time saver. While I have all the tools and am totally capable of the task, this cut my install time by 90%. Sure you can solder and heat shrink, but why... This is not a damp location. Very please with the detail and bundling of the wire loom. Unused wires were cleanly capped and tied off. No regrets. Do it and save yourself the tedious time....

I Love this ready harness because it speeds up installation time sooo well. BUT DO TAKE NOTE IF YOU ARE WIRING UP AN AMP AND NEED THE REMOTE WIRE, ITS NOT THE BLUE AND YELLOW WIRE WITH UNUSED CONNECTOR. I'm not sure if this is the same for all harnesses, but that's for the steering wheel controls. For mine, you needed to cut and use the blue and white wire wire that connected to the stereo. It would be nice if they included this info in the box for reference.

Could they make the install any easier? Only if they sent someone to your place and did the job for you! I had to install the unit on a 90 degree afternoon and the only saving grace was that this cable made the job truly plug and play. Never will I consider an install without these cables.

Pros: I upgraded a 2003 Jeep TJ with a new JVC with bluetooth streaming and four new speakers smoother than I ever imagined. I put it off for too long. Don't be like me.

Cons: Spending too much time driving around town in my Jeep.

This is a MUST for radio install. While I am a tech/electrical savvy person, I really didn't want to spend the time reading the wiring diagrams for my iDatalink Maestro RR & Pioneer NEX receiver, and then spend the time matching each wire up. This service cut my install time in half, easily. The harness I got was perfectly done, all connections secure, correct, and organized. I found it nice that they included a partial duplicate/extra set of the original harnesses used, should I want to move my install to another vehicle down the road. Extra/unused wires were properly terminated on one end with a crimp tube, leaving me the option to use them later on should I need to by just crimping into the other end.

Pros: - Everything was done correctly - SAVES SO MUCH TIME

Cons: - There are none.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

When i first found out about this service, i was STOKED! Finally had the opportunity to purchase a new head unit for my Subaru Forester, and i have personally spent a TON of time re-wiring crimping, missing slightly on a crimp, trying it again, stripping and breaking my back over a tiny little car. BOY was this the easiest and best decision i ever made.. (even tugged a good deal on one connection to make sure it would hold up to some abuse ;). absolutely the best $$ i ever spent toward an install. "PLUG + PLAY" that easy there were a couple extra little wires that weren't connected, i assume for the addition of the backup camera.

Pros: Plug and play, SOLID connections, my wife could do it so easy!

Cons: If there's extra wires there's no real explanation on what to do with them, just what they are.

Does not solve all of your problems for you, but if that's what you wanted, you probably wouldn't be installing your own stereo. Connections are sturdy, clean, proper, and well labeled if there's more for you to do. And when I called for someone who knew more than me, they picked up quickly. Having the automatically chosen fit-kit for my car and stereo combination was also really helpful. If an expert says "I can do that for you," let him. (or her, of course)

Pros: clean sound, sturdy connection that doesn't take up too much space. Reduces the tedium of the installation.

Cons: Having the installation steps half done for you can leave you disoriented while trying to figure out where everything goes and why it doesn't look like the instructions any more. It's like having an assistant who just went to lunch.

Crutchfield customer from Loves Park, IL on 6/30/2019

2012 Suzuki SX4

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased an Alpine receiver and CP2 steering wheel control adapter for my 2012 Suzuki SX4 and opted to pay for the ReadyHarness service. After installation in the car I applied power - the LED on the CP2 briefly lit, then extinguished. I pulled the 2A fuse and it had blown. I called Crutchfield, explained the problem, and they immediately dispatched another CP2. After installation, same problem. I called Crutchfield again. After working with the tech (who was extremely helpful) I spent the next hour removing the CP2 wiring that had been integrated into the stereo connector and splicing in a new harness as there was obviously a short somewhere in the original assembled harness. Suffice to say I had not anticipated spending this amount of time on the wiring. On the plus side there was always a tech available quickly when I called and they were very knowledgeable and helpful. On the downside the resultant wiring is not nearly as neat and dressed as I would have liked.

Pros: Great support troubleshooting and correcting problem

Cons: Paid for the ReadyHarness service and ended up wiring myself anyway.

While I have no problem whipping out my soldering iron and putting something like the harness together for a new radio, I knew that the weekend I would have everything I order, there would be minimal time to get it all done. So I figured I would save a little time and let Crutchfield provide me with the already assembled harness. Was a nice choice, as I was able to get my old unit swapped out and replaced in no time at all. Made very short quick work of it and was able to squeeze it in on a very busy weekend. Thanks!

Pros: Helps when pressed for time to get things done.

Cons: Nothing really.

A word of caution: do not expect this service to make your install plug and play, especially if you are adding steering wheel controls. My ready harness came wired incorrectly with the power antenna lead tied to the remote turn-on wire instead of the power antenna wire. When I connected my amp to the remaining wire, it would shut off whenever I switched sources from the radio. I called tech support and was told that I should cut the connection and crimp it to the correct wire. Cool. Wasn't the whole idea behind buying this service that I wouldn't need to guess and connect wires? Additionally, the wiring harness did not come with a pin for the steering wheel controls. This is more of an issue with the Metra harness than with Crutchfield, but still, it would've been nice to have a heads up so I wasn't guessing why my controls weren't working. Now I have to splice into the factory harness. The quality of the crimps was very good, but I'm disappointed that i had to spend as much time troubleshooting it as I did.

Pros: Crimp quality Zip tied

Cons: Wired incorrectly

I have never installed anything in a car before and this made it super easy. I was done with the install in an hour and I was super nervous about buying and installing the stereo myself. Not only did I install it fine but the steering wheel controls also worked, all I had to due was plug everything in. Being able to complete the install without incident and so quickly was incredibly satisfying. I now want to go order a backup cam, car plastic is not that hard to remove and replace. The most difficult part of the install was threading the bluetooth mic through the dash, which wasn't too bad because the dash as it turns out is mostly empty space, you basically shove the cord through. It did take them 3 days to ship due to the ReadyHarness service but it did arrive on the 4th day when they said it would. I was just hoping it would arrive early :)

Pros: Super easy Plug everything in

Cons: 3 days to ship

Plug and play simplicity

Crutchfield customer from North Andover, MA on 6/13/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Saves signifiant time crimping wires and provides plug and play simplicity. well worth the cost .... however .... One wire in the harness needs to be spliced into the parking brake using a wire tap ...a simple operation, even for someone unfamiliar. Crutchfield forgot to include the wire tap, however, necessitating a trip to the auto parts store to get a replacement, and some You Tube research on how to use the replacement (as it was a bit different from the type Crutchfield uses). As a footnote, the Crutchfield tech service rep promised to send me the missing tap ... its been almost a week and I still haven't received it.

Pros: Super simple

Cons: None, other than missing parts

So totally worth it. I have installed stereo receivers before and matching vehicle wires to a new receiver can be tedious and time consuming. Especially, if it is hard to find good wiring specs for your vehicle. They also wired in my steering wheel button controller. Plug in play for the most part, would have liked to have some written instructions to go with it. Some of my vehicles harness where lift unused and I was confused. I was given clarity after a call to Crutchfield

Pros: The harnesses matched up and everything worked as it should have, except the back up camera. Still working on that one.

Cons: Some written instructions or labels on the wires would have helped speed up the process.

Great After market Wiring Harness, and Installation guides

Using this aftermarket, pre-wired harness couldn't have been easier. My 'mechanically inclined' friend helping to install the Alpine stereo was happy to work with the Crutchfield kit. We didn't have to change the harness mount, as the new unit fit the existing harness from the old harness - which was from Crutchfield, too! A Big Nod to Cody for handling the order with pro recommendations.

Great and Easy to install! Being a technician myself I was impressed with the quality of workmanship on the crimps and how clean the wire work was. I purchased a ready made harness to eliminate having to alter the stock harness. I would recommend it to anyone looking to Plug and play!

This seems generally worth the money to me. The less wiring I have to do, the better. The hardest part of the installs for me is tapping the couple wires for the steering wheel controls. You're working in a tight space with very little slack in the wire and it's difficult and frustrating to do. One of the wires (possibly 2) I had to tap myself, I don't understand why they couldn't have done it for me. The wire that I tapped went to an unused slot in the Metra harness provided by Crutchfield. Why couldn't Crutchfield have just used that slot to connect the wire so I wouldn't have to tap it?

I ordered a Sony CarPlay unit and included the installation to have all functionality maintained (steering wheel controls, factory tuner, etc.) I will admit I was a bit nervous with all of the different harnesses and having to connect them as I don't do electrical work often. Not only did they connect the 3rd party stereo to the new harness, but also did all the connections for the steering wheel adapter unit and additional tuner adapter. I kid you not, installation took me all of 10-15 minutes in total. This service is absolutely worth every single penny if you are installing it yourself. Will absolutely recommend to others and inform them how easy it actually is.

Pros: Anyone is able to DIY install a car stereo

Cons: None!
