Overview

Our take on the Crutchfield ReadyHarness™ Service

Maybe you're incredibly busy. Maybe you just aren't handy with tools. Maybe you don't know that when you buy a car stereo from Crutchfield, we include a vehicle-specific wiring harness that you will have to connect to the wiring harness that comes with your car stereo. Crutchfield now offers a connection service for these harnesses, even for sophisticated wiring interfaces often required to retain important safety and entertainment features. When you purchase our ReadyHarness service, we will open up your new car stereo, remove its wiring harness, then connect it — wire by wire — to the vehicle-specific harness (included with your package) that plugs into your vehicle's wiring. We will wire up every available connection that we can between the wiring interface and radio, and we will make connections for any steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately) that might be needed — but keep in mind that you may have to make some further connections directly into your vehicle's wiring. The Crutchfield ReadyHarness is then packed back with your car stereo, so you'll be able to plug one end into the car stereo and the other into your vehicle.

Save time and effort

ReadyHarness

          Potential crisis...

What's involved?

We use a custom-tooled industrial crimping machine to ensure that your ReadyHarness will stand the test of time... and summertime temperatures inside your car! Our wiring pro consults the wiring diagrams for your car stereo and for your vehicle to make sure that every connection is correct. Of course, we can't make connections from your car stereo to wires in your car that are sometimes needed (like certain connections for a steering wheel control adapter or a parking brake wire for a DVD receiver), so you may have to connect a few wires for more complex applications.

ReadyHarness

         Crisis averted!

Why should I do this?

A Crutchfield ReadyHarness saves you significant time, effort, and potential heartache. In the past, you'd have to sit down with a crimping tool or soldering iron, match up the two harnesses wire by wire, according to function, and then make secure connections. Now, the ReadyHarness is ready to rock the minute you open up your new car stereo. And you'll avoid the pain of turning on your new radio only to find out that you've wired it incorrectly.

Please note!

Please remember that it'll take some time for us to build your ReadyHarness, so plan on your new car stereo arriving at least a day later than usual.

Listen to our customers

"I am absolutely thrilled at finally getting the wiring harness and vehicle adapter connected properly. It certainly significantly reduces the installation time/effort. Not sure why you didn't start this years ago."  — Bob M.

"Unless you do this often, why take the time and the chance that a connection is not correct? Then the time to figure out what wire is not working, etc.? You all fixed me up with one wiring harness. I plug into the radio and two plugs on the other end directly into the car. Swap a radio in 15 minutes. How cool is that?" — #crimpinainteasy

"Just wanted to drop you an email and say your adapter/stereo harness worked perfectly! I cut the installation time by at least 1.5 hours enlisting your service! Thanks again for a great job."  — Tom L.

"AMAZING!!  I was a Crutchfield  guy back in the day, installing various car stereos in my cars.  There always was chopping, wiring and a fair amount of brain surgery.  I just installed a JVC CD player in my wife's Honda Accord in 15 minutes, thanks to your prewired loom and excellent instructions!
Thanks again for a painless process!!!"  —  Ethan S.

Turns installation into a mostly plug and play process. Saved me the hours of time and tedium of wiring the harnesses on my own. With today's cars being more complicated, this is an essential service. Can't recommend enough.

Built the harness I needed for the installation of a Kenwood head unit in an Audi S4 with Bose. Took an extra day, but they got it right. And the installation took about 15 minutes. Including the test drive. Very cost effective solution.

Pros: Made the installation nearly effortless. Fit perfectly. Required nothing of me to get the job done. Only took a day.

Cons: None that I can see.

My first thought was that I didn't need someone else to wire my HU for me, but I'm snowbirding in Florida and don't have access to my regular tools and supplies so I thought "why not?" When the unit arrived and I installed it in just a few minutes, I gained a lot of appreciation for the prewiring service ! THANKS!

UPDATE

Armand G from LHC, AZ on 1/9/2019

I wanted to update my review on this service. Since I submitted this review, Crutchfield contacted me with the news that they had corrected the situation. I am completely satisfied with the way this issue was resolved. ANY company or service can make mistakes especially at the Christmas season rush time. What is rare is that Crutchfield acknowledged it and corrected it. Apparently, this company wants return customers and they have one here.

Pros: Corrected swiftly

Cons: Slight problems

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compare the Crutchfield ReadyHarness with the various harnesses and bare wire ends you'd have to splice, crimp, solder, and curse at for better part of a half-day and you'll be convinced the CRH is the way to go with DIY installations like mine. Hint for use: you'll get all the other harnesses that come packaged with your gear and if you're not entirely accustomed to working the car electronics it will take some study and examination to figure out which ones to exclude and which ones may be needed to pair with your CRH and equipment. It's worth the money to get the harness with your purchase.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Should have been plug n play BUT the wires were not connected firmly and started coming undone. Very fustrating as we already had to make our own harness for the back up cam. With these wires coming partially apart, spent added time correcting the problem. This is the first tome I've used this service and because of the problems, probably the last.

Pros: Service idea good

Cons: Reworking wiring because of its hastly done connections caused a lot of time.

2004 Mazda Miata
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paid for this service for my 04 Mazda Miata as a way to save time for installation. It was nicely done, except for 2 MAJOR problems. One wire kept coming undone, I ended up having to strip off insulation and re-crimping it. I also with my purchase got the Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter which they attached to the harness. The issue is they left the wires way too short, and I wasn't able to find any place to put the converter that would fit with the stereo in place! I had to undo all the connections on one side and add more wire to it. TL;DR: Had to redo something that I paid money for someone else to do.

Pros: Half the wires came out fine

Cons: Harness was made with no consideration of use Had to re-do half the wiring\ Waste of money

If you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, it's important to contact our Customer Support or Tech Support teams right away. Ready Harness Falls Short with SWC

Tom from Mohrsville, PA on 12/30/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So first of all I got to say, I love Crutchfield. Been buying from them for years and will continue to do so. I choose Crutchfield because of their knowledgeable staff and they have NEVER let me down. That said, I can't give this 5 stars. The ReadyHarness is a great solution to make the customer's installation a breeze, but not with Steering Wheel Control (SWC) in my Mazda 3. All provided radio connections worked as expected. Crutchfield even wired in the Power & Ground leads for the SWC unit, but they did not address 2 additional connections that I had to splice in manually. I understand that the Mazda harness (from Metra) that Crutchfield uses to make the ReadyHarness does not have the 2 pins required to make the connection to SWC harness, those pins only exist in the vehicle. What I don't understand is why Crutchfield; 1) doesn't request that Metra provide a harness with those 2 pin/wires? OR 2) why a company like Crutchfield doesn't stock extra wire/pins in their wire shop that could be inserted into the Metra harness so a complete SWC and head unit harness could be shipped?

Pros: Nice Price Quality harness work Excellent delivery response

Cons: Doesn't not provide all Steering Wheel Control conections

Pros: Reliable, solid connections, clean.

Cons: Cost, but a fair contribution to let Crutchfield continue doing its thing!

Plug and play!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plug and play for install of a HU upgrade to my 2016 Tacoma SR5. I don't mind soldering and shrink wrapping but with all the other holiday projects I just wanted to get this harness and easily plug everything in. Since I was already using a Maestro RR and wiring up a front camera getting this read-made saved me some time and effort for sure!

Pros: Easy

Cons: Cost

OMG! If you don't use the ReadyHarness service, you are seriously brain damaged! It's super cheap, and the time saved is well worth it. I just hope Crutchfield doesn't realize they can raise the price to whatever they want and I would still pay it. Shhh, don't tell anyone!

Pros: Super cheap, super convenient, and the answer to my car stereo installation prayers.

Cons: Now I have to upgrade the audio in all my other cars!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Get it! Totally worth the hour time savings. As a technician, I'm pretty critical of cabling and dressing things in so it's clean and orderly. They do a pretty good job.

Pros: Headache? What headache? Clean and orderly Easily tuckable in about any space

Cons: Include instructions with the pre-made when adding steering wheel controls like the metra. I had to look up about one wire that wasn't included with the harness (it was a hot splice) which prevented me from programming the controls

Wayne from Pflugerville, TX on 12/25/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Basically everything was OK except that the crimp connector for subwoofer power was not done correctly. So no power through the connector to subwoofer amp! After more time than I would like to have spent on radio settings, I broke out my voltmeter and found-and fixed- the problem. Fortunately I had the tools and experience to fix it.

Pros: Most connections were correct.

Cons: Subwoofer crimp conection was not one of the good ones.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am usually a DIY kind of guy, but since my new stereo required the use of one of the Metra GMOS-01 Interfaces to keep factory chimes, onstar etc.. I decided to spend the money and let Crutchfield do the Ready Harness service, So Glad I did, Worth the money. So I bought a new stereo and when it came Via UPS, Inside the box was a seperate bag with the GMOS-01 interface already spliced/connected to the correct wires going to the head units wire harness and vehicle wire harness, all I had to do was plug them in, and it works great. saved me time and hassel.

Pros: Makes installation so easy.

I didn't have a lot of time for this install, so I decided to try this service. I think it's worth it if you don't want to take the time to match up the wiring harness, but I must have read the description wrong because I thought it said Crutchfield would solder the connections but they arrived crimped with barrel connectors. Had I known this, I probably would've skipped this service and soldered the connections myself. I'm sure crimped connections are perfectly fine, it's just personal preference, I like being secure in the knowledge that the connections are not going to come loose at some point in the future.

Pros: Plug-and-play No reading wiring diagrams

Cons: Connections were made with crimps, I would've preferred solder

After several hours of running the new wiring perfectly for a very clean install (OEM Look) only to find out the ready harness wasn't completely wired. So after wasting a day I started to Trouble shoot and Ended up reinstalling the OEM head unit to re-test to make for sure its not a OEM Harness problem. Ended up calling Tech support several times (Great Help) and we started eliminating anything that could be a potential problem only to find out the harness had not been completed. So ended up removing the the new harness to complete all the Non-connections and double checked all the color code's with tech support help and Bingo!! Its Works.. I have done multiple systems before and I was trying to save time but ended up losing more.. Next time I'll just wire it myself and take nothing for granted..

Really the only reason not to get this service would be if you have the space and equipment to do it, and wiring is something you enjoy doing, and you are good enough at it to do it correctly. Otherwise, it's a chore that is easily avoided.

This product saved me TONS of time. Worth every penny. I also didn't have to worry about screwing up my wiring and shorting our all of my electronics, which is a beautiful thing. I have subwoofers so I had to splice some, which added more tune but still less compared to not having this product. The splicing instructions are a bit hazy, but still doable by all means.

Pros: Saves time. Makes installation easier. Less likely to make a mistake.

Cons: Wire splicing not totally crystal clear.

this was a no brainier:: It made a 2 hour wiring job a 15 min connection exercise. The only thing i would have like to see would be to have the cables better labeled as to where they go. With the factory harness and adding a Kenwood receiver and the Maestro there were a lot of plugs to test fit. :)

Pros: Took a 2 hour job to 15 min..

Cons: The only thing i would have like to see would be to have the cables better labeled as to where they go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first received the harness I was impressed by the apparent time and care shown in it's creation. I'm only giving 3 stars because when I went to install it, I consider their work to be incomplete. While they did splice in the power wires for the steering wheel controls, 2 wires were left not hooked up. I see no reason why those wires should have been missed. They were just additional pins already in the harness that would have needed to be punched down. The ReadyHarness came with hand written instructions about the parking brake and reverse cam hook-up (+positaps for them), but didn't mention those 2 steering wheel control wires. If those wires were connected to the harness to begin with, my installation would have been truly plug-and-play. Luckily I had a couple extra positaps which allowed me to complete the installation on my own.

I'm glad I got this service as it made the install way easier for me. This was my first car audio installation. My only knock on this is that they crimped off the remote turn on wire and I had to splice into it for my sub. That might be because I have a Volkswagen though, as the remote turn on wire was crimped into my VW adapter. Overall I would really recommend this if you aren't laying awake at night looking forward to connecting 10+ wires.

Makes the wiring easy. Don't have to squeeze my hands into a small space and try to splice wires. I also ordered the Axxess steering wheel control. There was one wire that needed to be connected that wasn't in the ReadyHarness. I suggested that a wire with the connector pin attached be included for the user to plug into the proper location in the harness for their car. Even if you are going to have the radio installed by a service, I believe the connections will be cleaner and less likely to have future problems if you supply the ReadyHarness for the installer.

Careful - if there's a SWC, they might not finish wiring it up

Brian from Kissimmee, FL on 10/28/2018

2011 Honda Element LX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered a radio and a steering wheel control interface for my Honda Element. I wanted a plug-and-play experience that wouldn't require cutting/splicing wires, so I was happy to order ReadyHarness service. I received the wiring kit, plugged it in, and the steering wheel control didn't work. A few calls with Crutchfield revealed the problem: the radio harness connector they used in my kit (Metra 70-7863) only has pins for the radio connections, not the SWC, so they weren't able to finish wiring the SWC to the connector (and they hadn't told me about this anywhere). Their solution: I would have to cut wires behind my car's radio harness and splice them to the SWC. I was very unhappy about this. My solution was to buy a random Metra harness connector, use a pin extractor tool to remove the pins from it, and reuse them in this connector; then use butt splice connectors and a crimping tool to connect them to the SWC. After many more hours and a few more calls to Crutchfield support (because the SWC instructions were confusing), I finally got everything working without having to cut any wires in the Element. Disappointed that I had to figure it out by myself.

Time is money. The money that I spent on the Ready Harness service was much less expensive than the cost of the time it would have taken for me to do it myself. The harness arrived along with my new Kenwood head unit. All in, it took me less than an hour to remove the old stereo from my 911 and install the new Kenwood.

Pros: Time saving

The binding and splicing of the harness was Grade A+. Thank you Chris D. for your splendid workmanship. I'm also glad I shelled out the extra cash to get this thing together. I can do a regular harness, no problem, but when there are things like a Rear View Camera, Onstar, Amped or non-Amped systems, I admit my eyes kinda glazed over. If your car is specced right via the website, they'll do everything needed to make it all snap into place. Zip-tying the wires saved a lot of hassle and worry. With the amount of extra wires and even a small brick sized interface to cram in that small cavity, every inch counts.

For the most part this made my installation plug-and-play. I can solder and have done my fair share of rewire work under the dash, but sometimes you simply want a new radio and don't want to think that hard. Our harness came all crimped up and once I figured out the green connectors in the dash are environmental and we had an extra, unused connector because we don't have the navigation kit, I was able to just plug the pre-crimped harness into the radio and into the car. Reconnected the ground on the battery and everything tested correctly the first time. While some people enjoy matching a purple/grey wire to a blue/purple wire, and then reworking the connection when they accidentally go the grey/blue wire in the mix, I don't. Best extra money I spent this year.

This is a great time saver. I would give it 5 stars but I had to return the first harness because it was missing a few wires and it even had exposed wires. They exchanged it no problem and the next one was correct with no exposed wires. However, this happened on like wed at 8 pm so I would not have got the replacement until the following Tuesday... so I wanted it next day aired but they would only cover half the shipping expense, I feel that I should not have had to pay any extra for shipping, I mean they did send me a defect part with exposed wires, with my trucks dash apart I did not want to wait almost a week to get the new one..

Pros: makes install faster and easier if the harness is correct the first time around

Cons: first harness was defective and I had to pay to have it next day aired to me. Or my dash would have been torn apart for almost a week..

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My last radio install took the better part of 3-4 hours attempting to set up, crimp, label, and finally heat shrink all the wires necessary. This wonderful service, my Expedition was up and running in under an hour. Match up the adaptors, plug in, go. Only issue I had was this adaptor plus my Kenmore had a purple and green RCA for factory sub. Not much info online so I only plugged the "purple" RCA in and my sub didnt work. It was after midnight doing this so just swapping the different colors, purple is red and green is white for 2008 Expedition and I was in business.

The wiring harness for my car stereo made all the difference. All steering wheel controls work as intended after installing an aftermarket stereo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

THIS is a no-brainer. With this, I was able to install my new stereo while sitting in my truck, in a parking lot, with only a 4-in-1 screwdriver! The harness plugged right in and worked perfectly! If I were doing the install in a tranquil driveway at my house (Sun shinin', birds chirpin'. My hot neighbor washing her Jeep...), I'd solder the wires and heat-shrink the connection. BUT *poof* I live in an apartment in the city now, so that's not an option. Don't get me wrong - this is well worth the money. Do the math: $15 for a good crimper, another $5-10 for a box of 18-22ga wire crimps. PLUS then you have to do all the labor yourself! And you might screw it up! Just buy this - plug this in, then plug that in, and Bam! You're done. You'll thank me later.

Pros: Ready-made! Just plug it in!

Cons: Crimped not soldered - but still an excellent value.

Scott from Santa Barbara, CA on 9/18/2018

2004 Honda Pilot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The harness wasn't ready because the steering control adapter wasn't wired in. I called tech support and they identified the wires needing connection while I unwrapped the harness. If they knew then why not do it? So I had to reassign a spare pigtail on the Crutchfield side to the vehicle wire corresponding to the vehicle side and crimp it to the adapter input. I didn't have a pin extractor, so what a pain.

Pros: Most of the wiring done.

Cons: Not obvious what's needed to complete it. Special tools required to complete.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not exactly a *fully* ready service. I was expecting that installation would be as simple as plugging in the harness to my car's adaptors and the back of the stereo, but that was not the case. There is no documentation in the Crutchfield MasterSheet detailing the full steps required for installation, as the steering wheel controls did not work when plugging in everything from Crutchfield. The Metra ASWC-1 adaptor required splicing into 3 of the vehicle's wires (which is what I wanted to avoid), and still doesn't retain any of the steering wheel controls.

First of all -- do it. Just do it. The job was incredibly neat. A nice little note described what the remaining loose wires were. I've done plenty of installs and crimped the harness myself. It has always worked but I end up with a mess of long wires to pack in the dash. For a pretty small extra cost this gave me a much cleaner harness for the install, and they also crimped on long lead wires for tapping into the reverse and parking brake wires for the extra features on the head unit. Plus they included taps for easy connection to the wires for those signals. Worked out way better in the end than any harness I've done myself.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For starters, Crutchfield reps Marshall, McKenna, Aria, and Charles are great -- five star all the way. I cannot say the same for ReadyHarness. I watched the ReadyHarness video. The presenter made ReadyHarness look simple and easy. I watched him catch the ReadyHarness tossed to him from off camera. I said to myself "ReadyHarness is as close to plug-and-play that an installation can come." I ordered ReadyHarness for our 2003 Honda Element. I wanted to preserve our subwoofer so I ordered ReadyHarness with a Scosche box. The Scosche box requires minute adjustments "to prevent damage." The minute adjustments require a 2mm jeweler's screwdriver (not supplied but available many places). My Scosche box arrived with its switch set to common ground, and not line out as it should have. I was spooked by the Scosche box so I asked Crutchfield to send me the alternative that didn't need a Scosche but bypassed the Element amplifier. I thought what could be simpler, remembering the video. The amplifier came with 18 feet of wiring, not the two feet shown in the ReadyHarness video. Tech said the wiring was for an amplifier in the rear of my Element and that I would have to snake wires. Then tech said my amplifier was under a kickplate at the driver door and that "no" I didn't need 18 feet of wiring. Instead he suggested I use the Scosche box, and he described how to make safe adjustments. In short I feel the ReadyHarness video misled me into thinking the system wa

Do this. It is worth every single penny. They wire it all up properly, label everything, and send it to you ready to attach to your radio and vehicle harness.
