Our take on the Olympus ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO

Olympus has chosen this lens as their first release in the newly designated lineup of M. Zuiko Pro lenses. These are lenses with rugged weather-sealing. So rugged, in fact, that they are advertised as being dust-, splash-, and freezeproof, making them solid companions for Olympus' OM-D E-M1 which is similarly rated.

Olympus is taking a bet that this will become your next day-to-day lens for your mirrorless camera, and they have good reason to be confident: with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 and an amazingly convenient 24-80mm equivalent zoom range, this lens will meet the challenges of low light shots, wide landscapes, and captivating portraits. Think of it as the ultimate kit lens — all the convenience of the handiest zoom range, without the tradeoffs lower-cost lenses hand you in the aperture department. Precision M. Zuiko optics will keep everything sharp and clear, while capturing vivid yet natural colors.

I have been a long-time Nikon user and fan. I purchased this sense in conjunction with the OMD-EM1. I would put this up against anything on the market in thfull-frame arena! It is that good. I shot a number of photos where I would traditionally use a flash. The color is bright and the images are stunning. Do yourself a favor and buy this lens for your all-purpose choice. I plan on purchasing the other M.Zuiko Pro series. A great camera is only half of the equation. Do not hesitate on this one.

Pros: Quality build Weather resistant Image quality Pro quality at a fair price

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

great lens with wide zoom range and fixed aperture throughout. Pictures appear to be very sharp, autofocus is very fast, good build quality (but lens extends when zooming). 62mm filter size. Some will complain about size, but coming from APS-C it still feels small - about the size (or smaller) of a standard kit zoom.

Pros: fixed aperture, sharp images, weather sealed.

Cons: lens extends with zoom

toss the primes and kit lenses

Richard from Cambridge, MA on 12/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Own a Panasonic G3, GF3 and an Olympus OM-D E5. Was using primes..Panasonic 20mm, 25mm and the Olympus 45mm plus the Panasonic 14-42 and an Olympus 12-50. Really love the Panasonic 25mm and enjoyed the kit lenses but was always a bit disappointed at how much light was lost when using the zoom. With respect to the primes, while quite bright, I's sometimes lose my shot by the time I put the lens on the camera or have concerns about getting dirt/dust on the sensor. Bought the 12-40. Was initially concerned it might be too big (size-wise it is similar to the Panny 45-200)...but I find the build and weight much better. The 12-40 is easily as good as the Panny 25 and Oly 45 and much better than all of my other lenses. Also, I appreciate the macro capabilities (though one cannot get as close as with the 12-50). I would not recommend the lens if only shooting with a Panny (get the Panny 12-35 for it's OIS) and would not put the lens on a GF3 or similar small camera. The lens feels great on the OM-D E5 and what helps considerably is that I have an Oly grip on the camera. I highly recommend the is spectacular quality. Stop pissing around with not so bright lenses and invest in a bright zoom and like me, it may not leave your camera.

Pros: Build, quality, weather sealed, manual focus ring, lens hood

Cons: none (not even the price as it can be had for less than a 12mm, 25mm and 45mm that covers the focal range). Might not recommend it for a camera without a grip

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I preordered this Olympus 12-40mm zoom lens after I knew I LOVED my EM1. I owned the $2800 Leica X Vario which has one of the best zoom lenses period, (yes a little slow aperture wise). I bring up the Leica because Leica is known for their amazing glass. This Oly zoom to my eyes looks 99.9% as good as the Leica zoom re: lack of distortion, micro contrast, build quality, and it's almost like owning several primes as it's THAT sharp..Can produce beautiful Bokeh as well (blurred background). This zoom lens in NO way resembles any type of cheapy kit zoom. Again pictures are tack sharp it seems, zoomed all the way in or out. It BEATS the Leica in that you can maintain the constant 2.8 aperture at all focal lengths..just great! I haven't noticed any chromatic aberrations at all..I just LOVE this lens. I also own the Pana/Leica 25mm 1.4, and the Oly 17mm 1.8 primes. I can honestly say unless I am in a real need for the larger apertures ala the 1.4, this Oly lens will pretty much live on my EM1. In truth I am NOT really a Micro Four type of guy. This lens coupled with the EM1 though is just simply great, oozes quality. For pure versatility and great IQ I think many will love this Oly 12-40mm zoom. Using the lens to focus manually is also really nice, very quick, nice feel to the focus ring. Auto focus with this Oly lens is rocket fast and quiet! Highly recommended!

Pros: Sharp Zoomed all the way in or out, Lack of distortion, Low or no Chromatic Aberrations, Build quality.

Cons: NONE

Beautiful pro lens for micro 4/3

Written by Zak Billmeier, Video Producer, on 2/24/2016 3:34:00 PM

I tested this out on my Olympus micro 4/3 camera and came away impressed. Its bright, f/2.8 max aperture lets you use it indoors in reasonable light, and like other micro 4/3 lenses it is quite compact for what it is. I've used similar pro lenses on DSLR bodies and they can be quite bulky. This one is solid as a rock in build quality, but balanced well on my rather small camera body.

The beauty of micro 4/3 is small size with great image quality, and if you do a lot of shooting in the 24-80mm (equivalent) range, this is worth the investment. I used it on a Panasonic body also, and it works perfectly like all micro 4/3 lenses. This lens is not stabilized, however, so on a Panasonic body you won't have the body stabilization like with Olympus. That said, I didn't feel I needed it at these focal lengths anyway. Highly recommended.
