About the Olympus M. Zuiko 17mm F/1.8

This superbly built, bright M. Zuiko lens from Olympus probably won't come off your camera very often once you've chosen it from your kit bag. The incredibly useful 34mm effective focal length, paired with a light-gathering f/1.8 aperture, will have you oohing and ahhing over the results from your landscapes, group shots, and low-lit interior candids — in a way that no common kit zoom lens can. Shots will be crisp and clear from edge to edge, and the 7-bladed circular aperture will create creamy smooth backgrounds for your foreground subjects when the aperture is wide open. When you're looking to give your low-light photography that extra "kick," this will be a lens you'll return to over and over again.

Olympus M. Zuiko 17mm F/1.8

Just bought this lens last week and I've taken a few candid shots of my son mostly in manual with my E-M10 Mark II. I was able to take clear, crisp shots while he played outside in the yard. I can't say anything negative about the lens at the moment even though I've spent a small amount of time with it, but I immediately fell in love with the combo. In both modes, the lens performs as I hoped for and better. Don't expect jaw dropping bokeh but depth is there. The focus ring can be set to manual on the fly for tweaking focus and the range is small so you don't have keep turning and turning to focus like some other lenses out there.

I was using the Panasonic LUMIX 40mm f1.7 before trading up to the Olympus 17mm f1.8 after seeing a video on the focusing speed of both. Both lenses were aimed at near/far objects. The Olympus 17mm was more than twice as fast compared to the 40mm. My experience with the LUMIX 40mm in low light was that it hunted and was painfully slow. Under the same conditions I found that the 17mm Olympus was much quicker, almost instant. The professional reviews of the lens also proved that it was very good with sharpness, contrast, and color. Plenty of actual photos on the net to judge for yourself. BTW: I was using a Olympus Pen F. If you're using with non-Olympus cameras I can't vouch for the auto focusing speed.

Pros: Small, lightweight, all metal DOF scale for manual focus Sharp, beautiful Olympus JPEGs

Cons: No lens hood.

Olympus 17mm and OMD EM-5

This lens is fantastic. The size, build and speed are very impressive. If you are coming from a DSLR you may think this lens is too small to take seriously but that would be a huge mistake. The image quality and AF speed are unbelievable. Having lots of kids in our family the AF can keep up with them without blur and catches the candid moments that you frequently miss with slower lenses. The OMD and the 17mm are small enough to put in a large coat pocket. Try that with your clunky DSLR. And you will get better images!

Pros: size, speed, build, manual focus snap ring is very handy as well

Cons: I wish it was weatherproof like the OMD body.
