Opening package broke my heart for the third time.

Jerry from Tulsa, OK on 5/19/2017

I wish I could give the lens 5 stars, unfortunately there was a quality control issue with Canon on the EF 70-300 II IS, there is an internal metallic flake that you can see when the zoom is retracted. I will be returning this lens for a third time, all previous lens have the same issue. Crutchfield has great customer service and I am very thankful for the hassle free return policy.

Surprisingly good!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently compared some test shots with my new EF 70-300mm IS ii USM to shots of the same distant subject with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L (non-IS version), widely regarded as one of Canon's sharpest lenses. Subject was a building across the valley from my house. Straight-line distance to that building is almost exactly 1/2 mile. The EF 70-200 f/4L is a great lens--had one for years--but I was amazed by the performance of the new EF 70-300mm IS ii USM when shot at 200mm. In the center of each shot, images from both lenses were nearly identical, and both of them were sharp enough for me to be able to read parking signs in the school lot! The L glass images were slightly clearer around the edges, but in the center where it matters the most, image quality was essentially the same between the two lenses. Even more surprising, with the new lens, image quality was just as good at 300mm as it was at 200mm. That's very unusual for low-end zooms, which often do a mediocre job at full extension. Stabilization was good with the new lens, too. I was able to hand-hold it at 300mm and easily get shots without any perceptible motion blur. This one's a keeper.

Pros: Great stabilization and extremely good image quality (particularly in the center of images) all the way out to 300mm

Cons: Lack of weatherproofing compared to Canon's more expensive L lenses

Overview: The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens is a telephoto zoom lens for Canon EOS cameras. This EF lens is recommended for use on full frame cameras, but can be used on cameras with APS-C or APS-H image sensors. It covers a wide range of focal lengths, and is recommended for sports and nature photography. The lens features a built-in Image Stabilizer (IS), as well as an Ultrasonic Motor (USM). The new Lens Information Display shows the focusing distance, focal length, and the amount of camera shake.

Image Stabilizer (IS): The built-in Image Stabilizer can be used in the AF (autofocus) or MF (manual focus) modes. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed up to four stops faster. The Image Stabilizer provides more reliable handheld photography and clearer detail in low-light situations.

Nano USM: The EF 70-300mm lens is equipped with Canon's Nano USM technology. The built-in Ultrasonic Motor (USM) gives you high-speed autofocusing for still images, and a Stepping Motor (STM) for smooth, silent autofocus for movies. No motor noise is picked up by the camera's microphone as the focus changes.

Focusing Ring: Regardless of whether you're in manual or auto focus mode, the focusing ring always works. This means you can auto focus on a subject, but manually change the focus by turning the focusing ring.

Zoom Ring Lock: As you zoom in, the lens extends up to approximately 2-1/2" inches in length. A zoom ring lock helps prevent the lens from extending on its own when carrying the camera on a strap.

Optional Accessories: Optional accessories for the EF 70-300mm lens include:

  • ET-74B Lens Hood: The lens hood attaches to the end of the lens to block stray light from entering the lens, and prevents flare and ghosting.
  • LP1222 Lens Case: The lens case protects the lens when it's not in use.
  • Lens Filters: The lens has a 67mm filter diameter for screw-on lens filters.
