Recording Features

Overview: This Canon EOS 90D kit includes the EOS 90D camera body and the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens. The camera comes with a wide fabric neck strap, the LP-E6N Lithium-ion battery, and LC-E6 battery charger.

Lens Compatibility: The EOS 90D has the Canon EF mount, and is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S lineup. This gives you a wide range of lenses to choose from, from ultra-wide angle to super-telephoto lenses. This kit includes the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS STM zoom lens.

Note: When you use EF lenses, which are designed for full frame cameras, the focal length on the EOS 90D will be 1.6 times the focal length indicated on the lens.

Viewfinder: The EOS 90D features an eye-level pentaprism optical viewfinder with approximately 100% coverage (for 3:2 aspect ratio). It has a built-in -3.0 - +1.0 diopter, so you can adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight with or without glasses. When using the self-timer or remote control, the supplied eyepiece cover, attached to the neck strap, can be used to prevent light from entering through the eyepiece.

Vari-angle Touch Screen LCD Monitor: The EOS 90D features a 3" Vari-angle Touch Screen LCD monitor with approximately 1,040,000 dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor swivels out and rotates up to 180° backward and up to 90° forward for shooting at difficult angles. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 brightness levels to choose from. The capacitive-type touch feature lets you operate the camera with tap and drag actions for setting menu functions and controlling playback operations. During Live View Shooting, the touch screen lets you select AF points, and take a picture with the Touch Shutter function.

Live View: The Live View Function enables you to shoot still images or videos while viewing the image on the camera's LCD monitor. The Exposure Simulation function lets you view the effects of the camera's settings on the photo you are taking. You can check the color, white balance, lighting, exposure, depth of field, and aspect ratio before you take the shot.

Electronic Level: The EOS 90D features an Electronic Level display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots. Icons in the viewfinder/monitor indicate when the camera is level, tilted at 1° or tilted at 2° or more. The forward/backward tilt is not displayed.

Depth-of-Field Preview: The aperture opening changes only at the moment when the photo is taken. The aperture normally remains fully open as you frame your shot, making the depth-of-field seem narrow. Pressing the Depth-of-Field Preview button stops down the lens to the set aperture opening and lets you check the depth-of-field before the shot.

Grid Display: The grid display superimposes vertical and horizontal lines in the monitor during Live View to help you compose your pictures. You can choose from Grid 1 which divides the monitor into 9 sections--3 vertical and 3 horizontal. Grid 2 divides the monitor into 24 sections--4 vertical and 6 horizontal. A 3x3+diagonal grid is also available.

32.5 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: The EOS 90D features a 32.5 Megapixel APS-C size (22.3 x 14.8mm) CMOS sensor that captures a high level of resolution so it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth. The image sensor has a 3:2 aspect ratio with 34.4-million total pixels.

Sensor Cleaning: The camera has a self-cleaning sensor unit attached to the image sensor's front-layer (low-pass filter) to shake off dust automatically. The dust delete data can also be appended to the image so that the dust spots remaining can be erased automatically by the provided Digital Photo Professional software.

Note: Dust which could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with a blower.

DIGIC 8 Image Processor: The EOS 90D features Canon's DIGIC 8 Image Processor to complement the 32.5 Megapixel image sensor. The DIGIC 8 helps produce high quality images and fast operation. The DIGIC 8 also brings out the details, and lowers noise in low light and high ISO shooting settings.

Recording Media: The EOS 90D records images onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, including UHS-II and UHS-I (Ultra High Speed) cards. UHS Speed Class 3 cards are recommended if you plan to shoot 4K or high frame rate Full HD movies. SD Speed Class 10 cards should be used for recording MOV format movies. For recording time-lapse movies, cards with a reading speed of 40 Mbps or faster are recommended for 4K, while 20 Mbps is recommended for Full HD time-lapse movies.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format in 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio. RAW and C-RAW images are recorded using raw data from the entire image sensor (6960 x 4640). They can be converted to JPEG format in the camera or using downloadable software. Simultaneous RAW+JPEG recording is also possible. In addition, the camera records video in the MOV format (Video: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: AAC). Audio is recorded in stereo using the built-in microphone, or with an external stereo microphone (sold separately).

  • Still Images: You can choose from the following JPEG image sizes in each aspect ratio: Large, Medium, Small 1, or Small 2. For each resolution, you can set the image compression to Fine or Normal (S2 images are Fine only). RAWImage sizes include:

Interval Timer Shooting: The camera can be set to automatically record a series of single shots at a set interval. You can set the interval between shots between one second (00:00:01) and nearly 100 hours (99:59:59). The number of shots to be taken can be set between 1 and 99, or to 00 to keep shooting until you stop the timer. You can combine interval timer shooting with other functions, such as AEB, WB bracketing, multiple exposures, and HDR mode. Use of a tripod is highly recommended.

Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus: The EOS 90D features Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which provides lightning fast and accurate auto focusing, so you won't miss the moment. It also captures fast moving subjects, and maintains focus, even when the subject is moving. Dual Pixel CMOS AF includes Face Tracking and Eye Detection, even while recording 4K videos. The camera offers a large AF Area that covers approximately 88% horizontal and 100% vertical, when using select EF and EF-S lenses. With older EF lenses or when using an extender, the camera's focus area is 80% horizontal and 80% vertical. The EOS 90D features a maximum of 5,481 manually selectable AF points, allowing you to configure the focus on a specific area, including those with Face + Tracking AF, single-point Spot AF, Zone AF, and single-spot AF.

AF Modes: You can select the AF mode to suit the shooting conditions or subject. In Basic Zone modes, the most suitable AF mode is set automatically. You can choose from the following AF modes:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once
  • AI Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway
  • AI Focus AF: switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving

Manual Focus: When autofocus fails due to conditions or lighting, you can focus manually by setting the switch on the lens to MF and turning the focus ring until the subject looks sharp in the viewfinder.

AF Assist Beam: The camera's built-in flash (or an attached external flash) will fire a series of flashes in a row to assist during auto-focusing in low-light situations. This AF-assist beam is effective up to approximately 13.1 feet (4 meters).

Shooting Modes: The EOS 90D offers multiple shooting modes, which are selectable on the top-mounted Mode Dial. The modes are divided into two zones (Creative Zone and Basic Zone), plus Custom Shooting Mode. To avoid accidentally changing the shooting mode, the mode dial has a lock, requiring you to hold down the lock-release button while you turn the dial. The Shooting Modes are as follows:

  • Basic Zone:
    • Scene Intelligent Auto: A fully automatic mode; the camera analyzes the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically. It adjusts the focus automatically by detecting whether the subject is still or moving.
    • Special Scene: The camera lets you choose an appropriate scene setting, and will automatically set the camera to the scene. You can choose from Portrait, Group Photo, Landscape, Sports, Kids, Panning, Close-up, Food, Candlelight, Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, and HDR Backlight Control.
    • Creative Filters: There are numerous Creative Filters that can be applied to images and saved as a new image: Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Fish-eye Effect, Water Painting Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Miniature Effect, HDR Art Standard, HDR Art Vivid, HDR Art Bold, and HDR Art embossed.

    • Creative Auto: The Creative Auto mode enables you to easily change the picture's brightness, depth of field, and color tone; while the camera automatically adjusts the exposure.
  • Creative Zone:
    • Program AE: A general-purpose shooting mode; the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
    • Shutter-priority AE: In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject.
    • Aperture-priority AE: In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness.
    • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
    • Bulb: When the Bulb setting is selected, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you release it. Bulb exposures can be used for night scenes, fireworks, or other subjects requiring long exposures.
  • Custom Shooting Mode: You can register the current camera settings, including the shooting mode, AF operation, menu settings, etc., for easy recall. There are 2 Mode Dial positions: C1 and C2.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-5 stops in 1/3- or 1/2-stop increments, however, the viewfinder and LCD can only display the setting up to +/-3 stops.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots. If the Drive Mode is set to Single Shot, you will have to press the shutter button three times. If set to Continuous shooting, the three bracketed shots will be taken continuously.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

Metering Modes: The EOS 90D features 216-zone (18 x 12) TTL open-aperture metering using 220k-pixel RGB, plus IR metering sensor during Viewfinder shooting. In Live View shooting and Movie Recording, the camera utilizes Real-time metering with the image sensor across 384 zones (24 x 16). The following metering modes are available:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure.
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 6.5% of the frame at the center in viewfinder shooting or 4.5% in Live View shooting.
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 2.0% of the frame at the center in viewfinder shooting, or 2.6% in Live View shooting.
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.

ISO Speed: You can set the ISO speed to suit the ambient light level. In Creative Zone shooting mode, the ISO speed is set automatically between ISO 100 and ISO 6400 (in 1/3-stop increments). In Basic Zone, the ISO speed is set automatically or manually between ISO 100 and ISO 25600, with an extension to 51200.

Built-in Flash: The Canon EOS 90D digital SLR camera features a built-in flash, which will pop up and fire automatically in Basic Zone modes. In the Creative Zone modes, you can pop up the flash manually when you wish to use the flash. When Red-eye Reduction is applied, a pre-flash will prevent the red-eye effect for most photos. Flash Exposure Compensation allows you to make the flash exposure darker or brighter +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

External Flash: You can mount an external flash unit to the camera's hot shoe. The camera is compatible with Canon's EX-series Speedlites (sold separately). The camera's built-in flash can work as a master unit with Canon Speedlites having a wireless slave feature and wirelessly trigger the Speedlite to fire.

Auto Lighting Optimizer: If an image comes out dark or the contrast is low, the brightness and contrast can be corrected automatically. With JPEG images, the correction is done when the image is captured.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. You can also adjust the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation and Color tone of each Picture Style. Picture Style selections include:

  • Auto: The color tone is adjusted automatically to suit the scene, especially blue skies, greenery, and sunsets.

Supplied Lens

Standard Zoom Design: The focal range of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens gives you versatile shooting options. It features a focal length range equivalent to 29-88mm when used on this camera with the APS-C image sensor.

Optical Image Stabilizer (IS): The lens features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since the Optical Image Stabilizer system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. The Stabilizer switch is located on the barrel of the lens.

Stepping Motor (STM): This new lens features a built-in stepping motor and focus mechanism which delivers smooth and quiet continuous auto-focusing. This is especially helpful when shooting movies in the Movie Servo AF mode, as very little focusing noise is recorded as you shoot.

Auto/Manual Focus Modes: To shoot in auto-focus mode, you must set the focus mode switch on the lens to "AF." To manually focus the camera, you must set the switch on the camera barrel to "MF," and focus by turning the focusing ring.

Movie Playback: When playing back movies the camera features the following operations: Play, Slow Motion, First Frame, Previous Frame, Next Frame, Last Frame, Background Music, Edit, Playback Time, Volume, and Menu.

Auto Rotation: Vertical shots can be rotated automatically so that they are displayed upright during playback.

Image Review: The image can be displayed on the LCD monitor immediately after you shoot. The review time can be set to off (not displayed), 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 8 seconds, or Hold, which keeps the image displayed on the LCD monitor until the camera is focused again.

Slide Show: You can view all images on the memory card one after another with the Auto Playback function (slide show). You can choose which recorded images will be displayed in the slide show by selecting All images, Folder, Date, Movies, Stills, or Rating. The Slide Show setup menu lets you set the display time (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 sec), repeat mode, transition effect (slide in 1, slide in 2, fade 1, fade 2, or fade 3), and background music.

Rotating Images: You can rotate an image by 90° or 270° clockwise in the LCD monitor.

Protect Images: You can select specific images from being erased accidentally.

Video/HDMI Outputs: You can playback your images or movies on a TV by connecting the camera via an optional HDMI cable (Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable required).

DPOF Print Settings: On the memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at participating photo labs.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is the standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Battery Information

Power Options: The EOS 90D operates on the supplied LP-E6N Lithium-Ion battery (7.2V/1800 mAh).  The battery can be charged in the supplied LC-E6 battery charger in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. The performance specs for a fully charged LP-E6N battery pack are as follows:

Temperature Room Temperature Low Temperature
No Flash Viewfinder 1860 shots 1850 shots
Live View 510 shots 500 shots
Flash Output:
Viewfinder 1300 shots 1200 shots
Live View 450 shots 440 shots

Optional BG-E14 Battery Grip: You can use two LP-E6 Lithium-Ion batteries or six AA batteries in the optional BG-E14 battery grip. When using the BG-E14 on the camera with two LP-E6 batteries, the battery capacity essentially doubles. With AA batteries, the estimated number of shots is 200-210 in viewfinder shooting, and 50 shots in Live View.

Optional AC Power: With the optional ACK-E6 AC adapter kit, you can operate the camera on common household power.

Auto Power Off: To save battery power, the camera turns off automatically after a period of non-operation. The Auto Power Off time can be set to 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, or 30 minutes.

Note: The Auto Power Off function will not activate in Auto Playback Mode.
