Our take on the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

The ideal traveling companion

Canon's compact 10-18mm zoom lens and your EOS SLR camera with an APS-C sensor make a perfect match for capturing crystal-clear, wide-angle images wherever you roam. The lens' stepping motor (STM) and refined autofocus system give you virtually silent operation for smoother-looking videos with better sound. The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer helps keep your shots blur-free. And at just 8-1/2 ounces, this lens won't weigh you down when you're ready to hit the road. It's the perfect choice when you're not sure what's next — a dramatic landscape, a child's face out on the playground — or a candid group shot.

Good Light Lens

Holz A from Winston Salem, North Carolina on 10/23/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this lens for backpacking due to its very low weight.

Pros: Very Light and relatively small good sharpness as the ratings indicate.

Cons: Not too sure about the plastic lens mount. This is the first plastic lens mount lens I have ever bought, only time will tell if it will hold up.

The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5 - 5.6 IS STM Lens

Celestino N from Olympia, WA on 9/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5 - 5.6 IS STM Lens , which I purchased online from Crutchfield --- a very affordable Ultra Wide Lens ---- has the capability to provide excellent clear pictures at still mode. The HD movie pictures are so neat and clear as well; it's like having your own professional movie camera. It's quiet which gives me the enthusiasm to take more shots at things that are nice to watch. Because it has a built in Stabilizer, people having hard time keeping their camera steady, minor shaking of hands would not affect the pictures' outcome. The AF & MF on the lens respond to the camera as fast as you can switch it for better pictures. I will be taking it to all vacations that I will experience in the future.

Strong high tech marvel

Sandy from Ballston Lake, NY on 9/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very fine quality optic/zoom. It's solid and gives one confidence in its mechanics and optical performance. Images at all focal lengths are excellent at all apertures on my sample. Very portable for a lens of its range. Fit and finish are really nice withe no wobble in the zoom barrel as with some lenses in the ef-s tier. Fits nicely in the hand for zooming and zooms smoothly and quietly. The STM technology and focusing is virtually silent. I own L lenses and this is on par or better than the Ls. Pretty good price for a ultra wide zoom! I will enjoy usig this lens on my new Crutchfield purchase, the Canon 7D. Definitely a homerun for Canon. Crutchfield sevice was impeccable as usual with kudos to customer service for outstanding professional management. Packaging and shipping was speedy and well done.

Pros: Tight, smooth zooming with silent autofocus and stellar image quality at all apertures and zoom ranges. Materials are excellent and welcomed as a travel lens.

Cons: None thus far

Product Research

Overview: The Canon EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM lens is an ultra-wide angle zoom lens for Canon EOS cameras with an APS-C image sensor. The lens features a built-in Optical Image Stabilizer (IS), as well as a Stepping Motor (STM) for smooth, quiet auto focus.

Image Stabilizer (IS): The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer can be used in the AF (autofocus) or MF (manual focus) modes. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four stops faster. Two 2-position switches located on the barrel of the lens allow you to turn the image stabilizer on and off.

Stepping Motor (STM): The EF-S 10-18mm lens is equipped with a Stepping Motor (STM) with lead screws that drives the focus lens, and also controls the focus lens during zooming. The STM and the newly-designed focus mechanism support the Canon EOS Movie Servo AF function to provides quiet, smooth auto focusing during video recording, as well as when shooting still images.

AF/MF Switch: A switch on the lens barrel lets you select Auto Focus (AF) or Manual Focus (MF). The rear focusing system, high-speed CPU, and improved AF algorithm allows high speed auto focus. Full-time manual focus allows you to manually focus with the focus ring, even while the lens is in AF mode.

Optional Hood and Filters: The EF-S 10-18mm lens has a 67mm mounting thread on the front of lens for attaching screw-on type filters. The optional EW-73C lens hood blocks out unwanted light, and protects the front of the lens from the elements.
