Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Bob from Oregon on 5/20/2014
The Canon 50mm f1.8 lens seems like a great lens for portraits. The price was right and I felt like I could use it in my tool box of lenses.
Pros: Lite in weight, cost is great.
Cons: Not one of Canons high end lenses hope it lasts.

If you want to take you photos to the next level (past the kit lens) BUY IT!!! For a little more than $100 you can get a tack sharp (@ f2.8) and some nice bokeh.
Pros: Price Sharp at 2.8
Cons: Soft at f 1.8

I bought a Canon T3i with no lens and bought this lens to start out with. The lens performs excellently. I am able to take pictures quickly even in very low light situations with no flash.

Awesome portrait lens for beginners
Melanie from San Antonio, TX on 12/6/2013
I checked this lens out after an online tutorial recommended it. What a great value! A no-brainer for beginners and hobbyists. This lens takes sharp portraits. If you're a pro, you might want something fancier, but for the rest of us it's totally worth the price.
Pros: Affordable, sharp photos, nice bokeh
Cons: Might feel cheap to a pro

Shipping was fast and easy. The only problem I had with this lens was that I have found a scratch in the middle of the lens. I am pretty disappointed but oh well ...

Get this lens NOW
Mark from Philadelphia, PA on 2/9/2012
I have entry level skills but this was recommended from a pro as a great start. Bought with the T2i and can tell you it takes amazing low light portraits with blurry backgrounds. I love to cook and take pictures of my food often. They come out looking like a pro did it. Also use it to film short videos with amazing depth of field and again, could be somethign you see in the theatre. Yes it is cheaply made plastic and keep in mind it is a prime lens so there is no zoom. You are really only getting some closeups and portraits with this. Good second lens to the kit lens to start.

Great Lens
Davids from Louisville, KY on 8/24/2011
Great lens for taking photos with blurred backgrounds. Makes me look like a pro even though most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing. Auto focus is a little noisy, but for this price you can't beat it.

Great lense for the price
Young J from New York, NY on 4/28/2011
Great for portraits and low lighting, but be prepared for greater distance between you and your subject should you pair this with a T2i or 7D (it'll be 85mm in practice due to the APS-C sensor). In absolute terms, the focus is somewhat slower than the higher end 50mm's, but for the price and performance it offers, it's a steal. Kudos to Crutchfield, who went out of their way to make good on a delivery that got botched by UPS. There are very few companies that I know of that care this much about their customers (and have actual human beings pick up the phone instead of being routed around some voice activated neverland).

Open box
Beef from Phoenix on 2/6/2011
I bought the open box model from Crutchfield and couldn't be happier with the lens. It was in mint condition, with super clean glass. Great for low light shooting, I have it paired with a T2i and it works without a hitch.

Clem from Hot Springs, AR on 12/6/2010
Great portrait and low light lens for the money. Got it for my daughter's new Canon T2i and she is thrilled. The baby will be born soon and she will use it to capture those precious moments at birth and for years to come. It focuses fast, has great detail and good bokeh.
