About the Canon EOS Ra (no lens included)

Astrophotographers, this one's for you

Does your love of our beautiful, mysterious universe kindle your passion for capturing breathtaking images of the night sky? Then you're in luck, because Canon has just created the EOS Ra — the industry's first full-frame mirrorless camera dedicated to astrophotography.

The EOS Ra is an ideal choice for shooting images of space from a tripod, or for attachment to an equatorial mount telescope that tracks the Earth's rotation. If you're thinking about seriously upping your astro game, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better choice than this camera.

Important note: the EOS Ra is designed specifically for photographing space, and is not suitable for general-purpose photography.

Canon EOS Ra mirrorless astrophotography camera

The adjustable-angle touchscreen lets you easily compose images when your camera is pointed upward toward the night sky.

An EOS R at heart, with two key upgrades for astrophotographers

The EOS Ra is a modified version of Canon's popular EOS R, with two important distinctions.

First, the infrared-blocking filter that's mounted in front of the image sensor has been changed to allow in about four times more hydrogen-alpha illumination at the 656 nanometers wavelength.

This lets you better capture the rich red tones that are found in nebulae and other deep-space celestial bodies. (That's also why this camera is not suitable for "normal" photography.)

The other important change is that the ultra-helpful 30X focus magnification appears through the viewfinder as well as on the LCD screen in Live Shooting mode. This lets you much more easily focus on faint, far-away light sources compared to the traditional EOS R — a very handy tool when composing shots of deep-space objects in the dark.

Keep using your favorite Canon EF and EF-S DSLR lenses

Canon has a variety of high-quality RF-mount lenses for the EOS Ra, but you can also use your existing EF and EF-S lenses with an optional mount adapter. This camera recognizes when you attach an EF-S lens and will crop your images accordingly.

If you're looking for a new astro lens, I especially like Canon's EF 24mm f/1.4L II as a wide-angle, ultra-fast option for night sky shots and 4K timelapse images.

Powerful processing

The EOS Ra is equipped with a high-performance DIGIC 8 image processor for outstanding image quality in low-light conditions. An ISO range of 100-40,000 gives you loads of flexibility for long exposures. I wouldn't be afraid to crank the ISO up on this camera, especially if you'll be doing post-production work to enhance your images.

Fast, accurate autofocus

The Ra's Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system enables fast, smooth autofocus performance. With as many as 5,655 manually selectable AF points and high-speed focusing in as little as 0.05 seconds, you can maintain focus with speed, accuracy, and ease.

Intuitive framing and focusing

With a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and a large 3.15" touchscreen, the EOS Ra offers easy, intuitive shooting. The touchscreen rotates to help you compose shots from high or low angles — perfect for when your camera is pointed straight up at the night sky, or mounted to your telescope at an angle that would otherwise make looking through the viewfinder difficult.

Touch and Drag autofocus makes it easy to switch focus by dragging the AF frame on the LCD screen. And you can even do it while looking through the viewfinder!

Is this camera right for you?

I want to reiterate that the EOS Ra is designed specifically for astrophotography. If you want to shoot anything else, like photos of your kids or your upcoming trip, you'll want to choose a traditional mirrorless body or DSLR. Our team of advisors would love to help you choose the right camera for you — just give us a shout.

Recording Features

Designed Exclusively for Astrophotography: The Canon EOS Ra is a limited-production version of the EOS R designed for astrophotography. It has approximately four times the transmittance of hydrogen-alpha (Hα) light (656 nm) as the EOS R, due to a modified filter immediately in front of the CMOS imaging sensor. This allows a much higher transmission of deep red infrared rays emitted by nebulae, without requiring special optics or accessories. Photographs of subjects that reflect a lot of infrared light will appear redder than they actually are. It may not be possible to obtain an appropriate color balance or uneven colors may result. Therefore, shooting normal subjects with this camera is not recommended. Operations of the EOS Ra are essentially the same as the EOS R camera.

EOS R Series: The EOS Ra is the latest version of the Canon EOS R series of mirrorless digital cameras. The new RF-mount is 54mm wide, much larger than the EF-mount found on Canon's EOS line of DSLRs. The camera is compatible with RF-series lenses. With the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter (sold separately), you can use all of your EF and EF-S lenses. This package includes the EOS Ra body only -- no lenses.

30.3 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: The EOS Ra features a huge, full-frame sensor. The 30.3-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers images of up to 6720 x 4480 pixels. The DIGIC 8 Image Processor enhances the speed of operations in the camera, allowing you to shoot large still image files and 4K video.

Clear View LCD II Vari-angle Touch Screen Monitor: The EOS Ra features a 3.15" Clear View LCD II TFT color monitor with approximately 2.1-million dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor has a capacitive touch screen that allows you to make menu selections, touch focus and touch shutter in Live View, and browse images using your fingers. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 manual brightness levels to choose from. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections (3x3), 24 sections (6x4), or 9 sections (3x3) with diagonals, as well as a dual-axis electronic level. The Live View function enables you to shoot your subjects while viewing them on the LCD monitor.

0.5" OLED Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): The Canon EOS Ra uses a eye-level viewfinder with 0.76x magnification for approximately 100% vertical and horizontal coverage. The 0.5" OLED EVF has approximately 3.69-million dots. A -4 to +2 diopter lets you adjust the viewfinder's image to your eyesight.

New 30x Magnification: The EOS Ra adds the capability of full-frame viewing with 30x magnification, a first for Canon EOS cameras. This provides a very useful tool for extremely precise focusing on small stars or other astrophotography subjects. You can display this 30x magnification in the electronic, eye-level viewfinder, as well as the LCD screen for Live View operation.

Note: You cannot view the 30x magnification feature when shooting remotely from your computer or mobile device, or while using EOS Utility software.

Sensor Cleaning System: Canon's Integrated Cleaning system includes a self-cleaning sensor unit that can remove dust on the image sensor. The Self Cleaning Sensor can shake off dust automatically when the camera is powered on or off. You can also activate the sensor clean function manually, if desired.

Recording Media: The EOS Ra records still images and videos to SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Both UHS-I and UHS-II cards are supported. For recording 4K movies, UHS-I Speed Class 3 or higher, or UHS-II Video Speed Class 60 or higher should be used. For Full HD movie recording, you should use UHS-I Speed Class 3 or higher, or SD Speed Class 10 or higher memory cards.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW (CR3, a Canon 14-bit RAW format). Simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording is also possible. JPEG images can be set to Fine or Normal compression. The image's aspect ratio can be set to 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, or 1:1. JPEG images will be saved with the set aspect ratio, while RAW images will always be saved in 3:2, with the aspect ratio information stored in the image. Movies are recorded in the MOV format, in three frame rates, and three compression methods (All-I, IPB Standard, and IPB-Light). Available image sizes include:

4K Frame Grab: You can select any desired frame from a 4K movie, and save it as an 8 MP (3840 x 2160) JPEG still photo. This 4K Frame Grab is done during playback.

Drive Modes: The Canon EOS Ra offers the following Drive modes:

  • Single Shooting: When you press the shutter button completely, only one shot will be taken.
  • High-speed Continuous Shooting: While you press the shutter button completely, multiple shots will be taken continuously. High-speed continuous shooting can record up to approximately 8 shots per second.
  • Low-speed Continuous Shooting: While you hold down the shutter button, you can shoot continuously at approximately 3 shots per second.
  • Silent Shooting: Silent Shooting is quieter than normal shooting. You can choose Silent Single shooting in Single Shooting and Self-Timer drive mode.
  • Self-Timer/Remote Control: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button on the camera. Using the optional BR-E1 Wireless Remote Control, you can operate the camera from up to approximately 16.4 feet.

5,655-Point Autofocus System: The EOS Ra features a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with 5,655 manually selectable AF points. The lightning fast AF system delivers sharp focus in as little as 0.05 seconds.

Focusing Modes: The camera lets you choose one of the methods for focusing:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once.
  • Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway.
  • Manual Focusing

Shooting Modes: The EOS Ra's top-mounted Mode Dial offers the following shooting modes:

  • Fully Automatic (Scene Intelligent Auto): The camera analyses the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically.
  • Program AE: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
  • Shutter-Priority AE (Tv): In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject. A slow shutter speed can create a blurred effect, while a fast shutter speed can freeze action.
  • Aperture-priority AE (Av): In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness. A low aperture number can create a blurred background (narrow depth of field), while a high aperture number can create a sharp foreground and background (wide depth of field).
  • Flexible-Priority AE (Fv): This mode lets you set the shutter speed, aperture, and IOS speed manually or automatically, and combine these settings with your choice of exposure compensation.
  • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
  • Bulb: When Bulb is set, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you let go of the shutter button. The Bulb Timer function lets you preset the bulb exposure's exposure time. Bulb exposures are for night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, and other subjects requiring long exposures.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure.
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 6.1% of the frame at the center.
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 2.7% of the frame at the center.
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.
