About the Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

A lightweight, ultra-wide-angle zoom lens
A lightweight, ultra-wide-angle zoom lens
The RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is one of Canon's smaller, lighter, and more affordable zoom lenses. If you're looking to step up from a kit lens and experiment with ultra-wide-angle shooting — or just want a nimble and versatile grab-and-go lens — consider reserving a spot for it in your bag.
Paired with a full frame camera, this lightweight, image-stabilized zoom lens takes you from an ultra-wide to moderately wide focal length. That makes it a great choice for landscape, portrait, and architecture — interior and exterior — photography. And it's great for trips or family outings where you might not want to travel with heavier, more expensive glass, but still want to capture crisp, colorful photos and videos.
With an APS-C sensor camera, its equivalent coverage of 24-48mm gives you a very useful wide-angle to standard zoom range.
Smooth autofocus with image stabilization
The RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM's stepping motor provides super-precise and quiet autofocus. You also get 5 stops of shake correction with the image stabilization feature turned on — 7 when you use it in conjunction with your EOS R camera's IS — so you can get clear, focused images, whether you're shooting stills or video.
And its ultra-low dispersion (UD) and aspherical elements help deliver high-quality images, while the Super Spectra Coating (SSC) reduces ghosting and flare.

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM ultra wide-angle zoom lens has a range that is ideal for capturing architecture, landscapes, as well as narrow interior shots. The RF 15-30mm lens has a wide zoom ring and a combination focusing/control ring. Its Optical Image Stabilization helps you capture sharp images in low-light scenes. The lens works well for shooting still images or videos on full-frame and APS-C cameras. On an APS-C camera, the lens has an equivalent focal range of 24-48mm.
Lens Construction: The lens is constructed of 13 lens elements in 11 groups, including one aspherical lens element for superb image clarity from the center to the edges of the frame, and two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens elements to reduce aberrations and distortion. The lens has Canon's Super Spectra Coating (SSC) that ensures a consistent color balance across all lens elements.
12-pin Communication: The Canon RF-series lenses feature a 12-pin communication system between the camera and the lens (compared to 8 pins for the EF-series). This 12-pin system is the fastest available for a Canon lens and camera combination, and provides faster AF, Image Stabilization, Digital Lens Optimizer, and more. In addition, the EOS R camera can display lens information directly to the viewfinder, making it easy to confirm the lens' focal length without looking away from your subject.
Control/Focusing Ring: The RF 15-30mm lens features a combination control and focusing ring, and a focus/control selector switch. In the camera menu, you can assign commonly used functions, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, or exposure compensation to the control ring. When the selector switch is set to Focus, you can manually focus by turning the focusing ring. The lens does not have a focus mode switch, so you will need to set the focus mode (AF or MF) in the camera menu settings.
Focus Range: The lens has a slightly longer focusing distance range when taking closeup shots using manual focus instead of auto focus. In Manual Focus, the in-focus range is 5.04" to infinity, while the range is 11.04" to infinity using Auto Focus. The focusing distance is the distance from the focal plane mark on the camera to the subject.
Image Stabilizer (IS): The RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens features Optical Image Stabilization to help you shoot sharper images in low-light situations. When the image stabilizer is activated (via the switch on the lens barrel), the lens provides up to 5.5 stops of shake correction. When paired with a camera body with In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), such as the EOS R3 or R5, the Coordinated IS is equivalent to 7 stops. The Image Stabilizer should be turned off when not needed, or when using a tripod.
Stepping Motor (STM): The RF 15-30mm lens is equipped with a lead-screw type Stepping Motor (STM) for smooth auto focusing. Stepping motors produce smooth, precise incremental movements, and operate in near silence, making the lens ideal for shooting videos.
Optional Hood/Case: The optional EW-73E petal-shaped lens hood, available directly from Canon, can help keep unwanted light from entering the lens causing flare and ghosting. It can also protect the lens from rain, snow, dust, or accidental contact. The Canon Lens Case LP1116 (sold separately by Canon) can protect the lens when not in use.
Optional Filters: The RF 15-30mm lens has a 67mm mounting thread on the front of lens for attaching screw-on type filters.
