This ultra-long range lens retracts when not in use to make it easier to carry and store.

Bladeless, fixed-aperture design

This lens has a fixed aperture of f/11, meaning it lets in the same amount of light every time you take a photo. That's because it doesn't have any aperture blades like traditional lenses do, so it can't be "opened up" or "stopped down" to adjust the amount of incoming light.

What does this mean on a practical level? Well, if you shoot manually, you'll only use your shutter speed and ISO settings to dial-in your exposure. A constant f/11 aperture also means that you'll need plenty of light to get sharp, in-focus images of moving subjects.

Finally, a fixed f/11 aperture means your depth of field is constant. I mention this here in case you're used to using wider apertures to blur your subject's background.

This lens can give you excellent subject and background separation because of its ultra-long focal length. This will be more prominent the closer you are to your subject, and the further away your subject is from its background.

Ideal for daytime shooting, or at night on a tripod

This lens is best-suited for handheld shooting during the day in bright sunlight. You can also place it on a tripod for increased stability in low-light environments.

allows handheld shooting without the traditional lens shake that can affect non-IS lenses at this long focal length.

More details on the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM

Mark G.

Product Research

Overview: The Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS USM is a super telephoto lens made for Canon's EOS R Series cameras. It has a retracting design that makes it more portable during storage. The RF800mm lens has a fixed aperture at f/11 for lots of detail for distant subjects. Its optical Image Stabilization works with EOS R series cameras to provide up to 4 stops of stabilization. The lens is also compatible with the RF lens extenders to help you get even closer.

Lens Construction: The lens is constructed of 11 lens elements in 8 groups, including dual-layered Diffractive Optics (DO) for reducing chromatic aberrations. When using Diffractive Optics lenses, you may experience colored flare around the light source, depending on shooting conditions. This is a characteristic of DO lenses. DO lenses have the optical characteristics of multiple lenses, so the overall weight of the lens is reduced. RF-series lenses have a large 54mm lens mount, with large diameter elements to give you brilliant images with minimal light fallout.

Extending/Retracting Design: The RF 800mm lens features an extending and retracting design. When you are ready to shoot, the lens unlocks and extends from 11.094" to 13.85" (281.8-351.8mm), and locks into place for stability. Once you have captured your shots, you can unlock the lens and retract it for storage until you need it again.

12-pin Communication: The Canon RF-series lenses feature a 12-pin communication system between the camera and the lens (compared to 8 pins for the EF-series). This 12-pin system is the fastest available for a Canon lens and camera combination, and provides faster AF, Image Stabilization, Digital Lens Optimizer, and more. In addition, the EOS R camera can display lens information directly to the viewfinder, making it easy to confirm the lens' focal length without looking away from your subject.

Focus Mode / Focusing Distance Switches: The lens has a 2-way Focus Mode switch that lets you choose between Auto Focus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF). In MF mode, the focus is set by turning the focus ring. You can also set the focusing distance range via a 2-way switch. You choose from full focusing range (6m to infinity) if your subject is relatively close, or a reduced focusing range (20m to infinity) for subjects that are some distance away. Setting the focusing distance range to a suitable setting can save time while autofocusing.

Control Ring: The RF 800mm lens features a control ring that can be assigned commonly used functions, such as shutter speed and ISO speed settings. It has a click action to give you a sense of how much it's being turned. In some cases, the sound of the control ring clicks may be picked up when recording movies. To remove the clicking sound, you will need to send the lens to the Canon Service Center for service. There is a charge for this service.

Image Stabilizer (IS): The RF 800mm lens features Optical Image Stabilization (IS) when mounted to a Canon EOS R series camera. The effect of Image Stabilization is equivalent to up to 4 stops. The camera and the lens share data to dramatically reduce blur caused by camera shake while shooting still images and videos. Image Stabilization can be turned on or off with the On/Off switch on the lens barrel.

STM: The RF 800mm lens is equipped with a lead screw-type Stepping Motor (STM) for smooth and quiet autofocusing while shooting still images and videos. Near silent autofocusing is critical when shooting video so any sound coming from the focusing motor can be picked up by the camera's microphone.

Tripod Mount: The RF 800mm features a tripod mount built into the barrel of the lens. You can easily attach a tripod or monopod to the lens for better balance while shooting, compared to handheld shooting. The tripod mount has a standard 1/4"-20 thread screw socket.

Optional Lens Hood: The optional ET-101 bayonet-type lens hood (sold separately) cuts out unwanted light and protects the front of the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, you can reverse-mount the lens hood for storage.

Optional Filters: The RF 800mm lens has a 95mm mounting thread on the front of lens for attaching screw-on type filters.

Optional Extenders: The lens is compatible with the Canon RF Extender 1.4x and RF Extender 2x extenders. If you need to get closer than the RF 800mm lens can reach, the RF Extender 1.4x will extend the lens to 1120mm, while the RF Extender 2x extends the focal length to 1600mm. The extenders attach first to the lens, then to the camera.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Will this lens work on t6i ?
[ Chris  Mar 28, 2022 ]
2 answers
NO this lens is only for the RF mount Canon cameras. This would be the mirror-less line of Canon ( the R , R6, R5 and R3) and not the DSLR EF line. There is no adapter for this to work on the EF line.
[ Victor  Mar 28, 2022 ]
No, it is for the RF mount cameras only.
