More details on the Panamax MOD-SPKP

Product Research

Features

Product Overview: The Panamax MOD-SPKP is a signal line protection module, designed to work with several Panamax surge protectors and line conditioners. The module lets you protect outdoor speaker, keypad, control and security wires from bringing a surge in from the outside to damage connected equipment.

Add-on Modules: Panamax offers add-on modules that can be daisy-chained to specific AC surge protector base units. Modules can be "stacked" one on top of another to protect additional phone and data lines, computer network lines, satellite and CATV coax lines, and speaker, keypad, control, and security wires. Brackets are included for connecting the module to the base unit.

Panamax Unit Compatibility: The MOD-SPKP works with the following Panamax units capable of accepting add-on signal line modules:

  • PM8-AV, PM8-EX, PM8T-EX, PM8C-EX, PM8DBS-EX
  • M-8AV-PRO, M8-AV, M8-EX, M8T-EX, M8C-EX, M8DBS-EX, M4-EX, M4T-EX
  • M8C-Pro, M8HC-Pro
  • M8HT-PRO, M8-HT, PM8-HT

Installation: The MOD-SPKP has two rows of 8 screw terminals, allowing you to connect up to 4 pairs of speakers or 8 control, keypad, or security wires. The screw terminals will work with a range of wire sizes, up to 12 AWG. Spade lugs are not required, but may be used. One row connects the lines from the outside equipment, while the other row connects the lines from the inside equipment. Any surges that come from the outside are stopped by the module before reaching the indoor equipment.

Warranty Note: This signal line protection module does not provide a Connected Equipment Protection guarantee as a stand alone item. It must be properly installed with a compatible Panamax AC base unit, and the base unit's Connected Equipment Protection Policy will remain intact.

Customer Q&A

I just lost a very expensive amplifier because my outdoor speakers were not protected. Hopefully this will keep this from happening again [ John  Sep 05, 2019 ]

I have a pool and wanted sound [ Richard  Feb 28, 2017 ]

Again, it is a Panamax product. This past summer I added a new room and a new screen porch, both with speakers installed. The speaker leads run through the attic and are long runs. Close by lightning strikes can induce damaging voltage and current on these conductors. I needed something to protect the audio output stages of the A/V receivers and amplifiers. Q
I downloaded the installation brochure but I'm not seeing anything clean cut about this. It says "can be used with Panamax surge suppressors but doesn't say "must", etc. Can I use this outdoor speaker protector with a simple copper rod ground? Can't 100% tell if this is a stand alone or must be used with another device. I already have a 'whole home' surge suppressor that my electrician installed. Thank you.

A
As long as you properly ground the Panamax MOD-SPKP, then it can be used as stand-alone protection for your outdoor equipment. Panamax recommends that you use one of their compatible surge protectors (which is probably why it's not very clear in the manual) along with the module, but it's not a necessity. I hope that helps.
