About the Samsung QN55Q900R
The 8K TV era has begun
8K resolution means you can sit close to the screen and enjoy a beautifully detailed picture without seeing any pixel "dots."
The 8K TV era has begun
The first 4K TVs arrived just six years ago, and I don't think any of us here at Crutchfield expected to see 8K TVs this soon. But Samsung's QN55Q900R is the real deal, with over 33 million pixels in its 55" screen. It can display four times the detail of a 4K TV. But there's much more to the story than just millions more pixels. Check out the other advances at work inside this remarkable TV.
Powerful 8K upscaling ensures that all your sources will look their best
There's currently no 8K* content available via disc, broadcast, or streaming service, but don't worry. Optimizing the upconversion of lower-quality video sources was a top priority for Samsung's engineering team.
The QN55Q900R's high-powered 8K AI Upscaling tackles upscaling in a smart new way. A built-in database analyzes millions of sets of low- and high-resolution images to create a more realistic picture, and uses machine learning to develop new algorithms.
Its picture-improving functions start with noise reduction — especially the compression noise you get with streamed video. Other features include detail creation, edge enhancement, and removing "jaggies" from curved and angled edges.
This upscaling works its magic whether you're watching the set's built-in streaming apps, connected via HDMI to a disc player or set-top box, or even mirroring content from a phone or tablet.
Stunning detail illuminated by impressive brightness
The QN55Q900R's full-array local-dimming LED backlight features a grid with nearly 500 independently controllable dimming zones, to deliver ultra-precise lighting. The combination of deep blacks and brilliant highlights creates a forget-you're-watching-TV sense of realism — especially when viewing HDR-enhanced content.
As a rule, 4K TVs with good HDR performance should be able to produce 1000 nits of peak brightness. The 8K QN55Q900R can hit peaks much higher than that.
See a billion shades with Samsung's quantum dot color
Samsung continues to refine its quantum dot technology. They found a way to tune the output of the atom-sized quantum dots so that they produce purer reds and greens, allowing the TV to cover nearly 100% of the P3 color space — the standard for digital cinema and HDR movies. QLED TVs can reproduce over a billion total shades.
The QN55Q900R also delivers strong "color volume." Color volume is a way of measuring color performance that factors in picture brightness. Most TVs lose some color accuracy as the picture gets brighter. But QLED maintains color accuracy and saturation at any brightness level. Colors pop like they do in real life.
One cord, no clutter
If you're after a clutter-free look, Samsung's QLED models are a great way to go, especially if you want to wall-mount your TV. Instead of connecting your Blu-ray player, cable box, and other video sources directly to the QN55Q900R, you connect them to the supplied One Connect Box switching hub. A single super-thin cable connects the hub to the TV, providing signals and power, for a clean, uncluttered look.
Some cool new smart TV capabilities
In an industry first, Samsung's 2019 QLED TVs will be able to access and play your iTunes® movie and TV show library. You'll also be able to buy or rent content from iTunes directly through an app built into the TV. The TVs will also include support for Apple® AirPlay® 2, so you'll be able to stream content wirelessly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® to the biggest screen in your home.
Samsung's slender OneRemote is one of the smartest remotes we've seen. It automatically detects, identifies, and controls your connected devices and content. Use the OneRemote's microphone to access Bixby, the TV's built-in intelligent voice assistant. Bixby makes it easy to change channels, search for content, or even ask about the weather, using only your voice. Just click voice recognition on your remote or smartphone, and Bixby is at your command.
The QN55Q900R is also compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa voice assistants.

Samsung QN55Q900R reviews
This TV replaced an old Sony 'Smart' TV that had to have the slowest processor on the market. This new 8K Samsung is light-years faster and the picture quality with the Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) is incredible to watch movies and stream on. Bonus points is that I could directly swap over the wall mount since this weighs hardly anything compared to the 50lb Sony (I think the wall mount is actually heavier than the TV at this point). I do like how Samsung integrated the stands into the back of the TV for storage. So if you wall mount, you can leave the legs where they are and if you ever decide to relocate the TV to a table, just pop them out and clip them in. Such an obvious feature you wonder why no one else did that previously.
Pros: 8K, Full array local dimming, super fast smart TV CPU, great cable management.
Cons: It didn't stick itself on the wall. XD

Features & specs
QLED TV: Samsung's QLED TV utilizes Quantum Dots along with Samsung's Quantum Processor 8K and a Direct Full Array 4X Backlight System with Ultimate 8K Dimming to produce an immersive viewing experience with a wide range of color, exceptional contrast, and accurate detail. Quantum Dots are nano-sized, cadmium-free, finely tuned particles that turn light into the brilliant billion plus colors you experience on QLED TVs. Quantum dots are inorganic particles that resist wear out, so you can enjoy superb picture quality for years. As some TVs age, you may see that colors are less vibrant. QLED TVs are built to last and provide a vibrant picture even after long periods of time. Samsung's metal alloy quantum dot pixels feature inorganic materials that are engineered for durability and resistance to fading.
8K Resolution: The Samsung Q900R Series QLED TV combines "true-to-life" 8K HDR picture quality with AI-powered intelligent upscaling for a revolutionary TV experience. Beginning a new era of picture quality, Samsung's Q900R Series QLED TV delivers 8K resolution with exceptional depth and detail that provides an immersive viewing experience. 8K resolution has 16x more pixels than Full HD, and 4x more than 4K Ultra HD. With more than 33 million pixels, The Q900R Series QLED TV delivers crisp detail, even in super big screen sizes.
- Only the TV's HDMI 4 input supports 8K video signals.
- Native 8K content based on current 8K streaming, connectivity and decoding standards. Future and certain 3rd party standards not guaranteed or may require additional device/adapter purchase.
- Currently native 8K video signals are not available for Samsung TV apps over a network connection.
- Upscales to 8K (7680 x 4320) resolution.
Quantum Processor 8K: The Samsung Quantum Processor 8K is an intelligently powered processor that upscales content for sharp detail, dynamic contrast, and refined color in real-time. It enables today's content to be remastered into stunning 8K detail.
- 8K AI Upscaling: With intelligent upscaling, The Samsung Q900R Series QLED TV converts today's content into stunning 8K for improved details and sharpened definition. Enjoy clear and precise images with 8K-level picture quality, reduced noise and sharpened definition. The Samsung QLED TV has a display resolution of 7680 x 4320 (8K) and will display all video at that resolution, regardless of input signal, thanks to 8K AI upscaling. 8K AI Upscaling delivers a stunning 8K picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, 8K upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, full-HD, and Ultra-HD content to 8k picture quality.
- 100% Color Volume: Samsung QLED TV delivers 100% color volume with over a billion shades of color (powered by Quantum Dots). QLED TVs with 100% Color Volume deliver a brilliant visual experience by providing a rejuvenating effect for colors that may appear dull or faded in challenging content.
QLED televisions can produce 100% color volume in the DCI-P3 color space, the format for most cinema screen and HDR movies for television. By definition, Color Volume is an index of how well colors are reproduced in richness and accuracy at different brightness. With higher color volume, you get a wider, more diverse range of color that feels rejuvenated at higher brightness levels.
- Quantum HDR 24X: Together with 8K Resolution, Samsung's Quantum HDR 24X technology delivers maximum brightness with intensely deep colors and super-fine details for astounding cinematic clarity. Quantum HDR 24X combines Samsung's QLED and HDR10+ technology to give you an extremely wider range of brightness and contrast, bringing all the picture nuances to life. As a result, you'll see extended shades of colors that really "pop", with greater dynamic range, improved contrasting detail, and darker scene highlights that come alive in stunning HDR - just as the director intended. You'll enjoy a beautiful picture, whether you're watching in a room drenched with light or with no light at all.
Direct Full Array 16X w/ Ultimate 8K Dimming: The Samsung QLED TV employs a Direct Full Array 16X Backlight System with Ultimate 8K Dimming featuring concentrated zones of precision-controlled LEDs that adjust automatically to display deeper blacks and purer whites, delivering stunning images with pristine contrast. Unlike edge-lit TVs where the LEDs are positioned along the edges of the screen, this Samsung QLED TV positions numerous LEDs directly behind the screen that are spread across the back of the television for more consistent brightness and contrast. Ultimate 8K Dimming consists of an extremely large number of precisely controlled zones across the entire LCD panel that adjusts the brightness of each zone to deliver deep, rich blacks and cris, bright whites. LEDs behind the darkest area of the picture are dimmed for greater contrast and darker blacks, while the brighter elements remain as bright as they should be for sharper contrast. The TV's Direct Full Array 16X Backlight System in combination with Ulimate 8K Dimming produces deeper, darker, and richer images that make what you're watchin on screen virtually come to life.
Ultra Viewing Angle: The TV is engineered to reduce glare and enhance color, providing a vibrant picture no matter where you sit. The QLED TV features Samsung's Ultra Viewing Angle technology which restructures the TV's LCD panel so the backlight passes through the panel with lights evenly onto the screen - the result is sharper images with deeper blacks and a wider viewing angle. Now, practically any seat in the room can deliver an exceptional viewing experience.
HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Samsung QLED TV features the ability to provide a premium High Dynamic Range (HDR) experience, with a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. HDR delivers a much higher level of contrast between light and dark to produce an image that is more realistic and closer to what the content creator imagined. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The TV supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.
- HDR10: HDR10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
- HDR10+: Samsung Electronics and Amazon Prime Video announced the entire Prime Video HDR library is now available in HDR10+, a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors on an expanded range of televisions. Prime Video is the first streaming service provider to deliver HDR10+ content to its users. The HDR10+ technology on Prime Video incorporates dynamic metadata that allows the Samsung QLED TV to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator's original intent.
- HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
Auto Motion Plus (MR 240): The Samsung QLED TV combines its 120Hz native panel refresh rate with Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus (MR 240) image processing technology, which is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image. Auto Motion Plus (MR 240) helps to remove blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus (MR 240) reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panel and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster on-screen motion.
FreeSync VRR Technology: With FreeSync VRR technology, the Samsung QLED TV gives you the real-time lower-lag gaming speed you need for a more enjoyable gaming experience. FreeSync VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is a new feature that allows the TV to adapt to the Game console's frame rate. So, whether the game console displays 59 FPS or 65 FPS, with FreeSync, the TV displays each frame as it is received from the source. This provides clean, smooth images, and prevents stutter and screen tearing. Supported video resolutions for FreeSync include 2560 x 1440 and 1920 x 1080. You can choose from 3 FreeSync modes - Ultimate (48-120Hz), or Basic (90-120Hz), or Off. Other game settings include -
- Game Enhancer: You can make your games more immersive by using intense, vivid picture quality and three-dimensional sound optimized for games.
- Dynamic Black Equalizer: You can easily detect items or hidden enemies lurking in dark corners by improving visibility and object details in dark scenes without washing out colors and contrast in brighter scenes.
- Game Motion Plus: Game Motion Plus smooths fast moving images for clearer motion video gaming.
HDMI 2.1/2.0 Inputs: The Samsung QLED TV is equipped with four HDMI 2.1/2.0 inputs (located on the One Connect Box) to connect to your Blu-ray player, Satellite/Cable receiver, Game Console, and/or AV receiver. Any HDMI input can also be used to connect a PC to this TV. All HDMI inputs are 4K compatible, HDCP 2.2 compliant, and support 4:4:4 color subsampling. The HDMI 4 input is version 2.1 compatible with support for 8K video (all other HDMI inputs are version 2.0 with support for 4K). The HDMI inputs' "Input Signal Plus" setting should be turned on if you will be watching 4K sources. 8K video signals are only supported on HDMI 4.
- HDCP 2.2 Compliant: HDCP 2.2 compliance makes the TV fully compatible with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission from Ultra-HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite//Cable providers.
- Color Subsampling: With 4:4:4 (8-/10-bit; 50/60Hz) and 4:4:4 (10-bit; 120Hz) color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. 4:2:2 (8-/10-/12-bit; 50/60Hz), 4:2:2 (10-bit; 120Hz), 4:2:0 (8-/10/-12-bit; 50/60/Hz), and 4:2:0 (10-bit; 120Hz) are also supported. 4:4:4 (10-bit; 50/60/120Hz), 4:2:2 (10-bit; 120Hz) and 4:2:0 (10-bit; 120Hz) are only supported by HDMI 4.

Built-in HDTV Tuner: The TV features a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Clear QAM tuner, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals (up to 1080i); subscription still required to receive cable channels. A single RF-type coaxial input is use to connect an external indoor/outdoor antenna (sold separately).
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input (located on the One Connect Box) enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, or HDMI inputs to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input.
- The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, USB ports, and Samsung TV apps can pass as Dolby Atmos (via Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, or 2ch PCM.
