About the Samsung QN55S95B

Emily S.

A highly anticipated OLED TV

Samsung is no stranger to OLED display technology — they are a leading manufacturer of the smaller OLED screens used in smartphones. But there is major buzz about the fact that they are releasing their first 4K OLED TV. For the last decade they've focused on their QLED quantum dot technology, which is known for delivering vibrant colors, even in the brightest rooms. The good news for TV lovers is that the 55" QN55S95B combines the rich color of those quantum dots with the infinite contrast of OLED to create one stunning picture.

Profile view of ultrathin Samsung S95B QD-OLED TV

The S95B's LaserSlim Design is aptly named — it's incredibly thin.

Powerful processing

This hybrid design — Samsung calls it Quantum HDR OLED — delivers gorgeous color, detail, and contrast with HDR content, but you don't need a premium signal to enjoy excellent picture quality.

The S95B's Neural Quantum Processor 4K uses Artificial Intelligence to optimize your experience for all kinds of sources. Content is analyzed scene by scene against its built-in database of images to create a sharper picture with realistic texture and detail.

The QN55S95B also uses Samsung's new Real Depth Enhancer. This algorithm identifies a scene's main subject and processes it to stand out from the background to improve the sense of depth.

Accurate sound

Just in case your room or budget doesn't allow for a separate audio system yet, it's nice to see Samsung put some focus on this TV's audio quality. The S95B has a 2.2.2-channel speaker system built into its frame. It's paired with their innovative AI-based Object Tracking Sound for directional sound effects that follow the action on the screen.

And if you connect it to certain Samsung sound bars, you can engage the Q-Symphony feature. This synchronizes the TV's speakers with the sound bar to create an even fuller soundstage.

Streaming and more with the new Smart Hub

The QN55S95B uses the Tizen platform to consolidate a wide range of streaming services into a single user interface. Want to have a Vince Gilligan appreciation day? Watch your favorite episode of The X-Files on Hulu followed by Breaking Bad on Netflix all from Samsung's new full-screen Smart Hub.

I'm also excited about a new feature that lets you video chat with your favorite people while watching a movie or show together (web cam sold separately). I've tried to create together/apart movie nights with friends over the last two years, and they were clunky to set up and frequently out of sync. This could be a game-changer!

Game on

Video gamers love the low input lag and high-contrast picture offered by OLED TVs, and the S95B is an excellent match for your console or PC. All four HDMI inputs support 4K at 120Hz. It also supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via AMD FreeSync™ Premium for smooth, tear-free graphics and stunning HDR detail.

Game Mode is automatically activated thanks to ALLM support to reduce input lag for lightning-fast response time. You can also make real-time adjustments to your settings using the dedicated pop-up menu called Game Bar.

Control options

The S95B includes Samsung's eco-friendly SolarCell Remote™. It has a built-in solar cell that is sensitive enough to keep the battery charged using the basic indoor lights in your home. Like prior Samsung remotes, this version makes it easy to control all your connected devices. It also has a button to activate your choice of included voice assistants: Bixby, Google, or Alexa.

Quantum Dot (QD) OLED Technology. Samsung's OLED televisions combine OLED (organic light emitting diode) self-illuminating technology with Quantum Dot color technology for a picture with perfect blacks, infinite contrast (1,000,000:1), high brightness (1000 nits), and wide color gamut (one billion colors) - giving you an intense cinematic image on screen with true-to-life color and depth. Each OLED pixel is divided into three subpixels: a blue subpixel consisting of the original blue OLED material, a red subpixel with red-tuned quantum dots, and a green subpixel generated by a green-tuned quantum dot; these are then combined to create true white light. With approximately 8.3 million specially engineered self-illuminating pixels contrast is virtually limitless.

    • Wide Color Gamut: The blue light generated from the light source of the Samsung OLED TV has a very high color purity, and the red and green quantum dots that produce color by receiving the blue light also deliver color light with high color purity. This RGB configuration with high color purity can express a broad range of colors (one billion colors), allowing the the Samsung OLED TV to have a very wide range of color expressions that can show colors closest to what they look like in real-life.
    • High Brightness: HDR or High Dynamic Range imaging refers to a technology that expands the dynamic range in digital images, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker so that the image is closer to what humans can see with their eyes. Therefore, for better HDR implementation, it is important to produce a scene with a wide range of brightness. Samsung OLED TV can express a vast range of brightness with perfect black. In addition, it can express a wide range of colors according to the change of brightness, which enables excellent HDR expression compared to competing technologies.
    • High Contrast Ratio with Real Depth Enhancer: The contrast ratio is the difference between light and dark on a screen. In general, most TVs limit screen brightness because of light source or power consumption issues. Therefore, how deeply the black color is expressed significantly affects the contrast ratio. For LCDs that use a backlight unit as a light source, the brightness of each pixel cannot be adjusted because the backlight is always on. Therefore, there is a limit to expressing a completely black color. With OLED, the light source can be adjusted for each pixel. Therefore, deeper blacks in darker scenes are expressed perfectly by turning off the light source of the pixel. Samsung OLED enables a high contrast ratio of up 1,000,000:1 thanks to the darker black color expression, therefore, deeper and more detailed image quality can be enjoyed.
    • Ultra Viewing Angle with Anti-Reflection: Various lights such as sunlight coming through windows, ceiling lights, ambient lights are sometimes reflected off a TV screen and can obstruct your view, making it difficult to see a clear image on the screen. Samsung OLED is designed with an optimal structure to minimize reflection of light, so it has the lowest level of reflection of light providing the best image quality without reflection of light, even in bright viewing conditions - regardless of location and environment. With the characteristic of OLED that emits light uniformly in all directions, the Samsung TV provides optimal image quality by delivering uniform luminance and color regardless of viewing angle.

Neural Quantum Processor 4K: Samsung's next-gen Neural Quantum Processor 4K utilizes advanced AI based deep-learning analysis to analyze the signal, source, and scene-by-scene content to deliver an incredible 4K optimized experience. By using up to 20 different series of data-driven algorithm models, each trained in AI upscaling and deep learning technology, the Neural Quantum Processor can optimize standard definition and high definition picture quality to 4K. Whatever you watch on the OLED TV, Samsung's powerful Neural Quantum Processor 4K knows how to make it better through 4K AI upscaling.

    • The Samsung OLED TV has a display resolution of 3840 x 2160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution, regardless of input signal, thanks to 4K AI upscaling.
    • 4K AI Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or Full-HD content to Ultra-HD level picture quality.

Note: This TV complies with the CTA 4K Ultra High-Definition Connected definition requirements. The trade organization known as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is considered an industry authority on engineering standards for consumer electronics in the United States. Visit www.cta.tech for more information.

Quantum HDR OLED: The Samsung OLED TV features the ability to provide a premium High Dynamic Range (HDR) experience, with a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. HDR delivers a much higher level of contrast between light and dark to produce an image that is more realistic and closer to what the content creator imagined. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Quantum HDR OLED combines Samsung's OLED and HDR10+ technology to give you a much wider range of brightness and contrast, bringing all the picture nuances to life. As a result, you'll see ultra-rich colors that really "pop", with much more greater dynamic range, much improved contrasting detail, and much darker scene highlights that come alive in stunning HDR - just as the director intended. You'll enjoy a beautiful picture, whether you're watching in a room drenched with light or with no light at all.

    • HDR10: HDR10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HDR10+: Samsung Electronics and Amazon Prime Video announced the entire Prime Video HDR library is now available in HDR10+, a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors on an expanded range of televisions. Prime Video is the first streaming service provider to deliver HDR10+ content to its users. The HDR10+ technology on Prime Video incorporates dynamic metadata that allows the Samsung NQ TV to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator's original intent.
    • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.

Note: This TV does not support Dolby Vision.

Four HDMI 2.1 Inputs: The Samsung OLED TV is equipped with four HDMI 2.1 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray player, Satellite/Cable receiver, Game Console, and/or AV receiver. Any HDMI input can also be used to connect a PC to this TV. All HDMI inputs are 4K/120Hz compatible, HDCP 2.2 compliant, and support 4:4:4 color subsampling. Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 48 Gbps and above to view 4K/120Hz content.

    • Supported Resolutions: Supported video resolutions for all HDMI inputs include 4096x2160p, 3840x2160p, 1920x1080 (i/p), 720p, and 480 (i/p). The HDMI inputs' "Input Signal Plus" setting should be turned on if you will be watching 4K sources.
    • HDCP 2.2 Compliant: HDCP 2.2 compliance on all HDMI inputs makes the TV fully compatible with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission from Ultra-HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite//Cable providers.
    • Color Subsampling: With up to 4:4:4 (8-bit; 120Hz) or 4:4:4 (10-bit; 50/60/120Hz) color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. 4:2:2 (8/10-bit; 50/60/120Hz) and 4:2:0 (8/10-bit; 50/60/120Hz) are also supported.

Note: The TV does not contain composite or component analog video inputs.

Motion Xcelerator Turbo+: Samsung's Motion Xcelerator Turbo+ technology delivers smooth, fluid motion at up 4K/120Hz. Smart Calibration takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

NextGen TV Tuner (ATSC 3.0): The ASTC 3.0 standard, commonly known as "NextGen TV" is the first major upgrade in broadcast TV since the transition to digital broadcasting (DTV) in 2009. NextGen TV is an Internet Protocol (IP) based system, which means it can carry internet content and services alongside the traditional over-the-air broadcast signal. The standard will enable never-before-available interactive features like video-on-demand and advanced emergency alerts for broadcast TV, all delivered free with an over-the-air antenna. NextGen TV signals will be stronger and will transmit over greater distances and deeper into buildings, with higher-quality picture and better immersive sound.

Note: Adoption of ATSC 3.0 is voluntary and stations that do transition to ATSC 3.0 will initially have to simulcast both ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 for 5 years. It is projected that by the end of 2020, sixty-one markets will be broadcasting in ATSC 3.

    Audio Section

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): The Enhanced Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an AV receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your AV receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. eARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, or HDMI inputs connected device to be heard through your eARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI eARC input.

    • The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, USB ports, and Samsung TV apps can pass as Dolby Atmos (via Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, or 2ch PCM.
    • DLNA compliant and wireless mirroring devices will only output audio at 2ch PCM only.
    • DTS multichannel audio formats are not supported.
Note: Your AV receiver or soundbar will also have to support eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) to accommodate the playback of these high resolution audio formats. If your AV receiver or soundbar only supports ARC (Audio Return Channel), audio playback will be limited to Dolby Digital or 5.1ch/2ch PCM.

Analog & Digital Audio Outputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the Samsung TV is outfitted with an optical (toslink) digital output and a stereo minijack (3.5mm) output. You must select which analog output you will be using in the menu (you cannot use both).

    • Optical Toslink Out: The TV's optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital (when available) or 2ch PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital when receiving Dolby Digital surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, or USB ports. When the TV's optical digital output is selected, the TV's speakers are muted. DTS multichannel audio formats are not supported.
    • Stereo Minijack Output: The TV is also equipped with an analog stereo minijack (3.5mm) that supports 2ch PCM playback. When the TV's stereo minijack output is selected, the TV's speakers are muted.

Built-In Bluetooth: Thanks to built-in Bluetooth 4.2, you can wirelessly connect a single set of Bluetooth headphones, a stereo pair of Bluetooth speakers, or a single Bluetooth speaker with the Samsung TV. You are able to stream audio from any of the TV's built-in sources or connected sources to the Bluetooth headphones or speakers. You can choose to have the TV speakers play at the same time as your Bluetooth headphones or speaker, or you can turn the TV speakers completely off. The TV's audio outputs and HDMI ARC will be deactivated when streaming audio to Bluetooth headphones or speaker. The volume of the Bluetooth headphones or speaker will be controlled via the headphones or speaker, and not the TV.

Intelligent Sound is also not compatible in Ambient or Game mode.

Object Tracking Sound (OTS) technology delivers a sound experience perfectly aligned with the picture. It lets you hear the action in every scene with audio that tracks every motion on the screen.
    • Sound Modes: The Adaptive Sound mode provides optimized sound quality by analyzing the acoustic components (dialog, music and special effects) of the audio content scene-to-scene. The Amplify Sound mode enhances midrange and high frequency sounds, which is useful when voices are difficult to hear. The Standard Sound mode provides a balanced sound where no tones are over emphasized.

    Q
CANTHE TV SPEAKERS STILL PLAY WHEN USING HEADPHONES?
    frank  Feb 21, 2023
    1 answer
    A
You can, Frank! You can choose to have the TV speakers play at the same time as your Bluetooth headphones or speaker, or you can turn the TV speakers completely off. However, the TV's toslink audio output and HDMI ARC will be deactivated when streaming audio to Bluetooth headphones. This means you cannot play sound through a home theater receiver or soundbar, only the TV's built-in speakers when using Bluetooth headphones.

The TV speakers will be disable while using the 3.5mm headphone jack. However, you may use the TV speakers at the same time as Bluetooth headphones. However, using Bluetooth headphones will disable optical and HDMI ARC audio output to external sound devices.

CAN THE TV SPEAKERS STILL PLAY WHEN USING HEADPHONES?

    A
Greetings Frank, and thank you for your question. If your headphones are connected via cable to the 3.5mm headphone out, the TV speakers will be turned off. If you are using Bluetooth headphones, you have the option to also have the TV speakers on, or have them off.

Does Crutchfield have a contracted service in the San Francisco East Bay area to deliver the new TV, set it up, and remove the old 55" TV and the new packing material?

    A
Greetings Jay, and thank you for your question. Unfortunately the delivery service we use for this TV is UPS ground. They are just going to deliver the TV. If you are in need of looking for an installer, the link below is a list of some installers in your area. We are not affiliated nor guaranty their work, but they might be able to haul away your old set as well. https://www.crutchfield.com/LocalInstaller/InstallerSearch.aspx?installType=1

Greetings Randy, and thank you for your question. Crutchfield does not sell the additional remotes. Perhaps you can buy another direct from Samsung. The part number for the remote is BN59-01385A.
