About the Samsung UBD-K8500

The first 4K Blu-ray player from Samsung

For the past few years, we've marveled over the stunning picture quality of Ultra HD TVs, but it's been in the back of our minds that they're capable of even more. Samsung's UBD-K8500 — their debut Ultra High Definition Blu-ray player — will finally allow today's 4K TVs to reach their top picture potential. Place an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc into this player's tray, and savor your movies in true 4K resolution — a staggering 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The first 4K Blu-ray player from Samsung

The Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player is the first 4K Blu-ray player we've carried.

The Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player offers a truly amazing picture from 4K Blu-ray discs (TV not included).

You'll get an incredibly sharp, realistic picture, even when you're sitting up close. Scenery will glow with a vivid array of colors. And a few movie studios have already announced their first batch of Ultra HD Blu-ray titles. These discs offer even better performance than 4K streaming, because the signal doesn't have to be compressed to travel over the web. Plus, you don't have to rely on extra high-bandwidth and a stable Internet connection to watch a flick.

Beautiful, lifelike picture contrast

When I first explored Ultra HD Blu-ray, I mentioned how gobsmacked I was when Samsung showed us a demo of High Dynamic Range (HDR). I think HDR is the most exciting aspect of Ultra HD Blu-ray. It allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image. (Think tiny stars peeking through the pitch-black night sky.)

This also has Hollywood buzzing. It gives directors a brilliant visual palette to play with — subtle, delicate lighting, sparks of brightness, and true-to-life shading and shadows. The UBD-K8500 will play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR on compatible televisions, like Samsung's line of SUHD TVs (namely the Samsung JS8500, JS8600, JS9000, and JS9500 Ultra HD TVs).

Samsung gives you more 4K viewing options — yep, including Netflix®

How fun would it be to binge-watch House of Cards and Orange is the new Black in 4K? How vibrant would the Colombian landscapes of Narcos look? Oh, you can find out with this player. When connected to your home network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, It gives you several 4K streaming options including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and M-Go. Plus, you can watch 4K video clips on YouTube.

And don't throw out your old standard Blu-rays and DVDs. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority for the UBD-K8500. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to 4K resolution. All of your movies and shows will look better than ever.

Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player with 4K resolution

The Samsung UBD-K8500 sports a curved design to match Samsung curved-screen Ultra HD TVs.

Impressive sound and music options

Along with the state-of-the-art picture, your movies will sound amazing too. The Samsung UBD-K8500 has built-in support for the highest-quality surround sound formats, like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS Master Audio™. It also plays Dolby Atmos®-encoded discs (just set the HDMI audio output to "bitstream" when connected to an Atmos-capable receiver).  It includes two HDMI outputs for sending audio to your home theater receiver and video directly to your TV. That means you can still play sound through receivers that don't have a free HDMI input that's HDCP 2.2 compatible. You can also use an optical digital connection.

This Ultra HD player's no slouch when it comes to music, either. You can play music from a CD or stream tunes from services like Pandora® or Spotify®. You can even wirelessly connect to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play songs from your computer.

Samsung UBD-K8500 4K Blu-ray player

Samsung's smart hub is smarter than most

This player's brain is a super-speedy eight-core processor — the same found in Samsung's latest high-end TVs, Galaxy phones, and tablets. It lets you do serious multitasking. You can browse the web without having to interrupt your movie, or use one app while downloading another. Plus Samsung's on-board selection of apps is pretty stacked — streaming video, sports leagues, music, games, you name it.

Project images to your screen

While newer phones are getting harder to cram into pockets, sometimes the screens still aren't large enough for certain tasks. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the Samsung UBD-K8500. Allshare™, Samsung's take on Miracast™ technology, mirrors the screen of your compatible mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Overall great upgrade over 5-year old Blu-Ray player. Easy to set up and connect to network. Only impediment to 5 stars was the ultra-tiny remote - too easy to lose or misplace.

Beautiful videos, Amazing audio

Spencer from Tucson, Arizona on 5/16/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

i've never reviewed any electronics before, but I absolutely had to with this 4k UHD player. Coincidentally had purchased the Sony UBP x800 a few days earlier, being somewhat brand loyal i bought it and set it up. Wouldn't allow full screen viewing through any settings. When I say full screen settings, i'm not talking about ZOOM from my Sony TV.Losing 22% of my screen through zooming outside the frame isn't what I wanted. Other ways are leaving frame as is and losing 22% that way to preserve the aspect ratio is also unacceptable. x265 files would freeze up, no FLAC support etc. etc. Returned it and bought the Samsung UBD-K8500. Found this player to be exceptional. More video and Audio options than you could ever want. Love the layout of the USB menu, the upscaling of all videos, the Full screen aspect holding of USB video support. Stable and unrivaled play of all video and audio. I mean FLAC SUPPORT!! Players hundreds more fail to support uncompressed audio. The playing of hundreds of FLAC audio tracks alone is worth the cost of the player. It also supports uncompressed audio in all the video files. This is a real diamond in the rough in the newly crowded 4k atmosphere.

Pros: Plays HEVC x265 movies through USB port Allows NTFS formatted hard drives Plays EVERYTHING in full screen Algorithm holds Aspect ratio on Full screen Flac Support

Cons: None

PURE CINEMA ENJOYMENT FROM TRUE 4K WITH HDR TO UPSCALE BLU-RAY AND 3D!

EDMUND from Clermont, FL on 4/19/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

You will notice that I emphasized this 2016 player is 4k with HDR Player and also has......." 3D on board". I own three Samsung 4K TV's. A top of the line 2014 78 inch and a top of the line 2015 78 inch and a 2015 88 inch. All these TV's have 3D on board and capable of 4K HDR. I recently purchased 3 UBD-K8500 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player's for each of the TV's and I must say they are just great. Love the quality of the picture as well as the 3D and the HDR. I truly feel Samsung and all the manufactures should consider putting 3D back in the 2018 series lines as many of us true cinema lovers would like to have all the great technology that we have purchased. Having a huge library of 3D movies that I would not give up enjoying them without the right TV and Blu-Ray player. In my opinion the 4K HDR feature that has not proven itself in regards to quality 4 K HDR as most movies are not produced in true 4K to begin with. The producers need to take the Blu-Ray releases of movies more seriously and not releasing older Blu-Ray movies in 4K that look just as good up-scaled normal Blu-Ray releases. I have read multiple reviews of 4k HDR movies and find very few titles that exceed the quality of normal Blu-Ray releases that are up-scaled. , Samsung has done a outstanding job on there 2014, 2015 TV's that included 3D in their top of the line models as well as this 2016 UBD-K8500 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player. Crutchfield is a company I trust.

Pros: HAS 3D CAPABILITY OF PLAYBACK

After working out a small hiccup thanks to the wonderful people at Crutchfield, I am extremely pleased with this unit. It has every feature one could ask for, was easy to connect and the video quality is tops; at least a 10. Rex assisted me in selecting this unit and was extremely knowledgeable about the unit and its performance. In an era where quality customer service is becoming a thing of the past; it's refreshing to deal with such a professional and customer service oriented company such as Crutchfield. You folks rock!!!!

Pros: Everything, from price to performance and video quality. It's a great bargain.

Cons: Cannot think of a single thing.

The dual/split HDMI ports makes this a one of a kind device!

Johnny from Hyattsville, MD on 2/16/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I wrote this to explain why this device stands apart from other streaming and 4k disc players. That is the ability for it to split it's audio and video jobs into two separate HDMI ports. No other device I know does that (correct me if I'm wrong). I'll explain why that makes this awesome. I have a LG Oled 4K E6P and what I thought would be an HDR compatible Onkyo htib.. HT-S7700. It's got one port that's 2.2 hdcp that has the ability to pass 4K but not HDR...which sucks. Well, with this device I can hook up the video port straight to my TV to get full HDR 4K and the audio port straight to my reciever to get Atmos, DTS and other audio capabilities. Without this connection, I cannot get lossless codecs due to it not being able to pass through Arc on my TV when I connect it there. This is awesome for people who doesn't have fully HDR compatible receivers. Another thing that makes this doubly awesome is it's application towards streaming through it's apps. Netflix, Amazon and Vudu are now able to be viewed with it's original superior audio codec as opposed to a lower lossy version. I can get Atmos through Vudu which I can't get through the TV app or my Roku Ultra which I'm forced to connect to the TV in order to get full HDR or I can just get regular 4K and superior sound by connecting straight to that one 4K compatible port on the reciever. What this does is basically allow people to stick with their original reciever instead of upgrading it, f

Good entry level player... but

GR from Schenectady, NY on 2/15/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Remote aside, easy to set-up and use. Picture quality is good but I expected more. Another reviewer commented he didn't notice much difference in picture quality between blu-ray and 4K discs- I agree. With the picture quality of our LG OLED 55" TV I expected to be blown away by 4K video. This hasn't been the case. The theater sound we're getting from our system is tremendous: how much of this is attributable to the 8500 vs. our receiver [Yamaha], I don't know. Both components were added when we purchased the TV. Speakers have remained the same. Receiver replaced a very good Onkyo component. All in all, the 8500 is an economical way to get into a 4K system. However, if you're looking for the best possible video, consider spending little more.

The player works well, although the images won't blow you away. I'm not sure the 4k discs I bought to play on this machine look any better then blu rays I play through my old Sony blu ray player that upscale on my LG OLED TV. If you can get a deal on this player and you need to upgrade or replace an existing player, go for it. Otherwise, wait for more 4k content to come out and more and cheaper players that can fully take advantage of the bump in pixel display.

Pros: Lots of useful streaming apps that can deliver 4k video. Easy to set up and use.

Cons: The first one I received would not load or play Blu-Ray DVDs.

I nearly sent back my purchased Samsung UBD-K8500 Blu-ray player for the simple reason of the remoter controller. It seems they wanted to make the smallest remote ever possible which causes your fingers to press multi functions at the same time. The only reason for three stars and not five stars is simply because of the remote.

Great picture quality. And I much prefer the streaming video apps as compared to my Vizio TV casting. So much easier to use. I purchased this because its 1 of 2 units on the market that actually plays 4K Blue Ray and has the required specs to go with the better TVs.

Pros: Great picture and boots up fast

FRUSTRATING REMOTE

JEFFREY from Bowie, MD on 1/13/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I gave it 4 stars instead 5 because I HATE THE REMOTE! It's awful. I try to fast forward and it moves to the next chapter...same if you try to rewind... it throws you back to the previous chapter. you have to time it just right to FF and RW. I also found the signal a little week. you have to hit the play button for an example 2 times for it to work. Yes... I put in new batteries, not the ones that came with it. I'm going to look into buying a universal remote. That said... The system works great and easy set-up.

Pros: easy set-up, good quality, enhanced movie visuals.

Cons: REMOTE!

This is an excellent Blu-Ray player and handles the newest 4K Ultra HD format well. The operating software is fairly easy to use and there are good options to customize the various aspects of its operation. Recommended

Pros: Plays all the latest UHD disks. Great fidelity, Supports remote standard that works with my TV remote. Updates firmware automatically. Reasonable collection of apps.

Cons: Software tries to be easy by being "artsy". Not a problem, just an irritation.

Everything works as advertised. The 4K up conversion is terrific. I especially like the two HDMI outputs where video goes directly to the TV and the audio directly to my receiver (which has 4K pass through but not needed). 4K disks really show off the TV's capability (Samsung JS9500).

Other reviews complain about the remote being too small and difficult to use, and if you do not buy this item because of that you are making a big mistake. The remote is small but it is very easy to operate and has an open / close button which other models lack. Very easy to navigate through the settings & Apps and to set up and link to Wi-Fi, and it is very quick to load the disc. Excellent picture quality from disc play and from the content streamed from the apps ike "Netflix", "YouTube" & Hulu". I had Audio & Video synch issues with "Netflix", "YouTube" & Hulu", but no issues with disc play. A call to Crutchfield Tech Support in addition to my own settings trial and error, we were able to collectively resolve the synch issues. The manuals that come with the unit are very vague in regards to trouble shooting, but with help from Crutchfield and the internet any issues should be easily rectified. I have not had the opportunity to stream or play 4K or HDR contents so I can not comment on that area of technology I did not give it 5 stars due to the vague manual and the lip-Synch issues that had to be resolved on our own. Cheers!

Good for entry level 4k

Ronald from Knoxville, TN on 11/25/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

For what it is, a budget, entry level 4k blu-ray player, it's ok. I feel that I'm paying extra for the name on it however as another brand that starts with P has a less expensive model, with a display, comes with HDMI cable and a movie that is lower in price. The remote is also really cheap, however, I'll be using our Harmony. Setup was fairly easy initially, upon playback of my first 4k movie our LG OLED said it had to reboot to enable wide color, after that came the bad part. The player was connected to our Marantz SR7010 then to the TV and would not play the disk. It took much research to realize that the second HDMI port labeled SUB had to be connected to the AVR and the other HDMI to the TV. Once this was done, everything now seems ok. Load times are ok, not as fast a some movies on PS3, but faster than some. Video quality is great, audio is great. This will be replaced as quickly as the Oppo 4k player is released assuming it has Dolby Vision.

Pros: Price Audio Video Apps

Cons: Accessories (or lack thereof) Remote No Display

Good Picture, But Look at the Downside

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

If you are looking for a 4K player to make those 4K disks look great on your TV, consider the Samsung UBDK-8500. Despite the great-looking image this player displays, there are several serious downsides. I tried to connect to my new Epson 6040 projector and it would not display an image. After calling Epson, they realize that there are serious software issues that they are trying to work out with the Epson. They suggested trying a Panasonic (too pricey) or the Philips (too basic). Another serious complaint as others have noted is the remote itself. For a 4K player at this price range (originally), the remote is lacking in several areas. It is just too small to use on a regular basis. In addition, there is only one button that doubles for scanning and next chapter (forward and reverse). For this expensive of a player, you would expect a lighted remote, but not on this unit. Again, if you are looking for a basic 4K player to show off your 4K TV, you can't do better than this Samsung. Just don't expect anything fancy!

Pros: Great Picture Stylish Design

Cons: Remote is too small with tiny buttons Does not connect with some Epson projectors

Good picture. Great Sound.

Todd from Damascus, MD on 9/27/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Good 4K and HDR player. Buyers need to understand the difference between HDMI 2.0 and 2.0a before buying. Buyers also need to know what HDCP 2.2 is before buying. If connecting to a compliant HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2 pre-amp/amp device, most of the default configurations on the UBD-K8500 will need to be changed. Very good picture, but not great picture. However, the sound is absolutely incredible if bit streaming to a pre-amp/receiver which decodes to Dolby Atmos or DTS 7.1. Most other vendor's products are not fully hdmi 2.0a compliant, nor hdcp 2.2 compliant. This product is fully compliant.

Pros: Specs for this product are fully compliant with HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2.

Cons: Not a great picture, but better than blu-ray quality.

I didn't like this 4K Player for two reasons, 1) no display - when and if it locks up Samsung will ask you to send it in because they can't tell whats happening! 2) The remote is very small and terrible to to operate in dark room! I returned it the next day, and am going to wait for Sony's True 4K player next spring 2017. If these two problem don't matter to you, when player is working the picture & sound seemed fine.

Pros: True 4K player

Cons: No display! Terrible, and very small remote!

The Player to Get

A remarkable player - best I've yet seen (or been able to afford!) Stunning image quality. I've tried it on vintage black and white and recent color films. The sharpness is staggering. The saturation of color never overwhelms or appears artificial. The contrast of black and white is so striking, never "graying" out. Buy this player and fall in love with your discs all over again.

Pros: Great Image for a fair price

Cons: Other players are cheaper, but this one proves its price.

Great UHD player

Paul from OK on 9/4/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Terrific UHD player. Only reason it's not 5-stars is I prefer displays on the player that let me see what's going on. Samsung's move to display-less players has made me move all my future purchases to Yamaha. When Yamaha releases a UHD player, this will get replaced. It does it's job for now. I like the small remote. The raised surfaces on the buttons make for easy tactile recognition in low light of what button I'm touching. It's really a very nice remote.

Pros: Dual HDMI output. Love that I can push UHD source video straight to my OLED TV as my Yamaha 3040 can't process that signal. The second output allows for the ATMOS signal to get processed without the video limits of my receiver.

Cons: No display. Samsung: stop being cheap and bring back the display! People would pay for it...and it's not that much extra cost.

Electronic manufacturers always trying to assault your wallet .This is another white elephant like HD radio,HI-Res DVD audio and so on.I bought a 4K TV recently and the picture is truly amazing with better colors, great blacks, sharpness, etc; all this using regular 1080 TV broadcasts and Blu Ray DVD'S.All 4K TV'S have upscaling to UHD like mine and I can't tell the difference between an upscaled picture from TV broadcasts and Blu Ray DVD.The difference does not warrant spending a small fortune on this ugly looking 4K player, even less to spend more money buying 4K DVD'S that actually started to collect dust in the store shelves. If you are looking for a better TV picture buy a 4K TV and a decent Blu Ray player with a good quality HDMI cable and you will not regret spending your money in something you'll regret. Use the money for something better.I do also recommend to subscribe to an Internet movie service. They have Some 4K movies you can watch. This is DOA.

Cons: Waste Of Money

I recently bought this unit to go with a 4K tv I purchased. I picked up some 4K Blueray movies to go with it too. It was more work than anticipated to get it all set up, didn't like that part. Playing regular Blueray discs it works flawlessly and upstreams the picture excellent, pictures look amazing. Downside is that nowhere was I able to see that this player will ONLY play 4K discs if you have a 4K UHD HDR tv, not the same as the majority of 4K UHD tv's on the market. In order to watch these movies I had to return a new tv and spend double the money to get one that was actually compatible with this player. Without the right tv this player is no different than any other one that is 1/4 of the price.

Pros: Upstreams DVD's and Bluerays to near 4K quality picture, definitely better than watching on a regular player.

Cons: For what it is, it's overpriced, the remote is too small and the made a horrible choice on batteries for it. Advertising and info on these players aren't good enough and don't explain that they won't work on all 4K tv's.

My player is hooked up to a Vizio P75-C1 TV with an HDMI 2.0 to the TV and an HDMI 1.4a cable to my AV for audio (which can not handle 4k / HDMI 2.0). Setting up the player is easy - I went to BB and bought my first 4K UHD movie Sicario. After many tries the player would either not recognize the disc or recognize it as a Blu-Ray data disc.. Since Blu-ray discs played just fine I suspected a defective UHD disc and went back to BB to exchange it. We watched the movie last night (yes it was the disc) and the quality is fantastic. Now the software is just awful - my panasonic blu-ray player it replaces from 2012 has better interface. Also the remote is tiny and has no forward button.. Very annoying.. I actually bought this for the apps as the Vizio has no software built in so needed a player to handle Amazon, Vudu and Netflix in 4k. Now Vudu is only 1080p (apparently Roku 4 player has exclusive on Vudu 4k streaming) and Netlix in 4k is amazing. Not sure if Amazon video app can handle 4k - all shows are in 1080p only. Anyone else had that issue? maybe the next update. until then I will enjoy my Netflix!

Pros: plays UHD, Netflix streaming movies in 4k HDR!

Cons: software and remote.

I received the Samsung 8500 two weeks ago and have it connected to a 2016 LG OLED along with a a Denon AVR 7200. Generally I will not buy Samsung products, but this is he only UHD player out there. The user interface is simply the worst I have ever see. Tiny remote and no front panel controls. The whole thing looks junky. It is exactly what I have come to expect from Samsung. It does play HDR UDH disks fairly well but somehow I suspect that their implementation of HDR is flawed. The white to black range is not that good. Its ability to upscale 1080P discs is excellent in terms of clarity. Its color rendition however varies substantially from to disc to disc. My OPPO with 2k to 4k scaling does a much better job. I'll probably keep this player, but eagerly await the release of an OPPO UHD player. They make the best players in the world and care about quality and functionality. If you think that you are really seeing UHD on his player, I doubt it.

Pros: Plays UHD discs

Cons: Almost everything else.

Bought this item to go along with my new Samsung 4K TV. I am a fan of 3D movies and have an extensive collection and wanted something that I could play them on as well as have something for the 4K disks that will be coming out soon. Although I haven't had an opportunity to play any 4K disks yet, playing 3D movies was a breeze and worked wonderfully with my TV. The unit is very thin and sleek design and I am looking forward to using it much more extensively in the near future.

Pros: Nice design, easy to setup and use

Cons: A bit pricy

I have owned several Samsung dvd players throughout the years. I have purchased new ones as technology demanded. Just got the Samsung KS9000 SUHD 4K tv and purchased the companion 4K Blu Ray player to go with it. This player is Amazing! The detail seen in 4K movies is unbelievable!! Watched San Andreas in 4K and it was as if we were in an actual movie house theater. Sound, picture, everything right on the money. I am using a Denon AR-4306 to process the sound and letting the tv do all the video switching. This will be a Great set-up for us for many years to come.

Pros: Ease of use, compatibility with Samsung SUHD tv, spot-on reproduction of movie from disc.

Cons: Remote is a bit on the small side. (But I'm using a Harmony Elite so it's really not a factor)

Since this is currently the only UHD player available, I was a little hesitant to pull the trigger. I have a Samsung flatscreen 65JS8500. When the 4K blurays started to appear, the itch needed to be scratched. I waited a month before Crutchfield had them back in stock. Prior to the Samsung, I was using the Oppo 105d. The oppo had excellent pic quality but only did a 4K upscale without the benefit of the HDR. My first film was The Life of Pi. There was no going back from there.I was very impressed with the Samsung. The Oppo is now only used for my SACD collection until I get to see what Oppo will offer down the road.Everything I watch is now thru the Samsung. I only use the BDwise feature on certain films but mainly have it off. Even the Amazon, Netflix etc look amazing. This player does a great job upscaling any content not 4k. I give it 4 stars because build quality is all plastic. The remote is bad if you have normal size fingers and can get a little frustrating at times. To be fair, the price point is well worth it considering the excellent pic quality this machine can display.

Pros: Excellent pic and upscale

Cons: Remote is to small and build quality could of been better.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was a bit concerned reading reviews of people having issues early on with this player, but after owning it for a few weeks all of those worries have been squashed. This is a great player for the price. The picture quality is amazing, it loads discs quickly, doesn't make too much noise, and has apps access through their SmartHub. Make sure you hook up the video signal to the proper HDMI output, and depending on your TV you may want to set the color settings OFF or AUTO to properly display 10-bit video. Also, because firmware updates happen pretty often, make sure auto update is ON as well.

Pros: Picture quality, loads quickly, outputs Atmos and DTS:X bitstream, setup is relatively easy.

Cons: Price for non-early adopters.

This first on the market 4K UHD BluRay player is a great addition to start your 4K Movie Collection on Disc. The HDR quality pops out on my Sony 4K 75" LCD TV which is HDR compatible. The picture quality is stunning and does a super job with standard BluRays and DVDs. I have it hooked up with the main HDMI out directly to the TV input and the second HDMI into my Yamaha CX-A5100 PreAmp with 11.2 set-up to decode both Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround discs!! It is awesome. Two issues that prevent me from giving this a 5 star - the remote is too small and the buttons not easy to run in the dark. Disc control become hard to navigate - and you are never sure the button is fully pushed. With big fingers - it very easy to press the wrong or multiple buttons. The second issue is the fan noise - really? Can't you make a device today with appropriate cooling fins - quiet in a home theater is essential!!

Pros: Superb Picture Quality and HDR Pops out all the color spectrum! Great that there are two individual HDMI outputs - one for TV and one for receiver. Also good for streaming. Nice upscale to 4K of both HD Blu Ray and standard DVD. Good first 4K BluRay player to start your 4K UHD HDR Disc Collections!

Cons: Remote is ridiculously small - with tiny buttons!! Woul like to see an iPAD control app!!! Also, fan noise is a problem for any ultra quiet home theater environment.

Samsung's New 4K Player

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

First and probably foremost, there is no question that this player delivers a superb 4K picture -- I bought a 4K version of The Martian just so I could see what it does with native 4K material. The upscaling of HD is quite good as well. Having said that, however, I have two other (earlier) Samsung BluRay players (both with excellent video and one that does a pretty fair job of upscaling HD to sorta 4K into my Samsung 4K TV) and both are more user-friendly than the UBD-K8500. I don't "hate" the new remote control, but it's pretty close to that. It's too small, so awkward to use, and the haptic feedback from the control buttons is generally poor. Samsung's previous BluRay remote controls are far better. Setting up Closed Captions is more tedious and trying to use Fast Forward and Reverse is a pain. I also find that when I pause the player, I will frequently lose the sound through my Denon receiver and I have to re-select the receiver's proper HDMI input again to get the sound back. None of these are issues with my other Samsung BluRays. If I could, I'd give this player 3 1/2 stars based on the picture quality only. I was on the leading edge with buying this player; I wish I had waited.

Pros: Great 4K video!!!

Cons: Not nearly as user-friendly as previous Samsung BluRay players with a number of shortcomings. The remote control sucks!!!

I saw this Product announced, and Crutchfield got it to me right away. It was easily installed and serves as a good $K hub as well as player. My first 4K Blu-ray was the Martian and the Samsung loaded quickly and interfaced nicely with my Sony 4K projector through my Denon 4K receiver . Had one small glitch with the Martian disk down converting to 1080 but worked through Crutchfield tech support and we figured it out. This is going to be just like the introduction of Blu-ray initially where all software updates will be important because each disk is pushing new technology. For a first machine Samsung has done a nice job, highly recommended!

Pros: Easy to install, loads fast, great picture!

Cons: Make sure you do all software updates, player, amp, projection because this is new technology . This is the nature of early adoption!

I purchased this last week from Crutchfield Open Box from the retail store. I had asked if there would be any issues with this and my Epson 5030UB projector and was told no. However, this will not work correctly due to the HDCP 2.2 restrictions. I kept getting error messages from my UHD movie the Martian. Though I understand this projector is not 4K I should at least be able to watch the movie. All I get is sound and no picture.

Pros: Nice looking

Cons: Remote is tiny, NO display and this will not work correctly with a 1080P machine due to HDCP 2.2 copyright restrictions.

I used this player in conjunction with a JVC RS 500 and had continuous handshaking issues, even with using Monoprice Cabernet active (18Gbps) cables. I believe the samsung is converting 4:2:0 disc all the way up to 4:4:4. It should allow 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 outputs. When playing UHD discs, I had to place the projector to high lamp and adjust the contrast and brightness up for HDR content and the picture was still too dim for me. Also had black crush on dark scenes. Thought I noticed more motion blur on the Samsung than my sony blu-ray player. Another issue is the player's default video mode for its menu: 2160p/60 4:4:4 12-bit color depth, which is not recognized by the JVC. By ejecting the disc tray or starting a movie, the samsung converts to a lower resolution and the menu (GUI) displays. I have read where using the HD Fury will solve some of the issues with communication between the JVC and Samsung, but I decided to return the unit.

Pros: Plays uhd material, hopefully most or all issues will be addressed with firmware updates. Has two HDMI outputs.

Cons: Cheap, Cheap remote. Does not have Dolby Vision

Excellent 4K UHD bluray unit from Samsung. This unit is quiet and fast loading. Samsung has provided an easy setup, as well as a menu that also easy to navigate. Apps are plentiful, however as of this review the HDR signal has not been activated for popular apps such as Amazon Prime or You Tube. 4K resolution, a wider color gamut, as well as HDR make viewing a 4K UHD disc on the Samsung a leap beyond the regular bluray viewing experience.

Cons: Small remote No HDR on some apps

I pre-ordered this before the launch and received it early from Crutchfield. Alas, after a week or experimentation, I had to return it. I believe the UHD BR will be the reference quality format of the near future. It can contain a more accurate/wider color selection than Blu Ray (rec 2020, or the DCI P3 subset at least, versus rec 709). It can contain far wider dynamic range (10 to 12 bit, instead of 8 bit). And, of course, it can contain higher resolution. Early UHD BR discs already show off some of these benefits. Interestingly, the RESOLUTION factor is the least impressive so far, perhaps because so many movies are created in the 2k workflow that most studios are still limited to. But this player has a few growing pain kind of problems. First, while the player has lots of "4k" streaming apps, none are really "UHD" in the sense that they don't support high dynamic range nor expanded color. Second, the player makes some strange choices about frame rate and color encoding defaults that actually put it outside the spec of UHD (e.g., 2160p 4:4:4 at 60hz) which my UHD capable, HDR capable, 4k capable, DCI p3 capable display could not display -- and which exceeded the capabilities of many high speed 18gbps HDMI cables.... So, I will wait until there is a unit on the market (perhaps even this model, with later software updates) that solves these challenges.

Pros: UHD BR will be the reference quality format of the near future. UHD BR can contain a more accurate/wider color selection than Blu Ray (rec 2020, or the DCI P3 subset at least, versus rec 709). I've only watched one 4K Blu Ray and the difference between 4K and a regular Blu Ray are not great in my opinion (at least on my tv, a Sony, A900), but it's pretty cool that we are seeing the advancement of 4K. I think anyone who has a TV that supports HDR will likely see an appreciable difference in PQ. What I really like about this player is its ability to scale a regular Blu Ray or 1080i signal to 4K. I am really impressed by that. I have a Pioneer BDP-88, a $2,000 player, and I actually prefer watching the Samsung K8500 for regular Blu Rays. I was not expecting that. I am so glad I pre-ordered this player. I am really pleased with it so far.

Pros: It's 4K! Excellent scaling of 1080i and 1080p signals to 4K. Netflix app works flawlessly.

Cons: None that I've run into yet.

I preordered this unit from Crutchfield, and to their credit they shipped it out earlier than expected. Several online retailers had not even quoted a ship date, and I got my unit early (thanks Crutchfield!). So once I unpacked it and hooked it up, it was interesting getting the settings dialed in. I spent a lot of time online to gather advice and tips, and once I got those dialed in, I was enjoying Exodus in 4K. "Wow" was the word I used to describe the picture. 4K with HDR on my Sony X940C was amazing to see. I also watched The Martian and Kingsmen in 4K, and was equally as impressed by the level of contrast, color, and 'pop' that I was seeing. Bottom line; If you have a 4K set that handles HDR, then by all means buy this unit. If your 4K TV does not do HDR, then the value of this player may vary. The player is also very fast to boot up, and takes seconds to get to the main menu of most discs. The remote is a bit small for my taste, but does have a premium feel to it. The dual HDMI's are a nice feature which I use; 1 directly to my TV, 2 to AV receiver. And while the player is fairly light and 'plasticky' the construction seems to be pretty solid and somewhat aesthetically pleasing (if you dig the curve). Overall, this is pretty solid as a bluray player with 4K capability. But with HDR, this player is best way to enjoy the full capabilities of your 4K TV.

Pros: Fast boot up and start time Dual HDMI's Solid bluray/3D bluray/4K bluray playback 4K streaming apps

Cons: Small remote Requires some trial and error with settings on certain TV's Initial software can be buggy

The future of home video has arrived, and it is UHD Blu-ray! After unpacking the player, setup was quick and easy...all I had to do was connect the Samsung UBD-K8500 to my UHD TV using a High-Speed HDMI cable (be sure it's one that's rated for 18 Gbps throughput) and to my AV receiver (you can use any HDMI cable rated for at least 10.2 Gbps). I then went into the player's setup menu and made a few straightforward selections for video output (2160p) and audio output (HDMI 2), and I was ready to go: I inserted the movie "The Martian", and was rewarded with an absolutely spectacular picture in razor-sharp, high dynamic range ultrahigh definition. With image quality like this, who needs to go to the local multiplex?

Pros: Ease of setup, fast disc loading, incredible picture, growing suite of apps to access streamed UHD content, and a very reasonable price.

Cons: None.

Pre-ordered this like 2 wks ago, and very pleased it arrived a few days later on 2/11/16. Upconverts regular Blu Rays to at least twice the resolution 1080x2=2160 , bringing out more details & making the overall picture sharper and crisper. . More colors when you select HDMI Deep Color. DVD'S look a bit better too . I saw that some Ultra HD Blu Ray discs have gone on sale early as well. Picked up " Wild" & watched that on our 65'' LG 4K . Since I have no way of knowing 100% sure that our tv supports HDR, the disc played, but not in HDR. The picture did look somewhat better than a regular Blu Ray, but not a whole lot really. Was just a bit disappointed in that regard. That is not the players fault, it's my tv. : ( Thought I did enough research before making a splash into the world of 4K & spending over 2,700 for the tv a few months ago. Oh well.

Pros: * Streaming is very good, looks better than what already streams on the tv's web os. Menu is easy enough to use as well. * Disc loading times are fast ! Much faster than our "old" Blu Ray player. * Regular Blu Rays & DVD'S look much better than before !

Cons: *Cons; the remote is really small. It's easy to hit another button by accident & does not have enough buttons for different things. * Wish there were more picture options available. * 3D Blu Ray does not get upconverted to 2160 resolution. Still looks good though !

I've been using this player now for over a week and am pleased with the results. Set up was quick even with a firmware update. I have one UHD disk - The Martian - annd can see a slight improvement over the 1080P version but then my LG65UF8500 doesn't have HDR so I wouldn't expect all that much improvement anyway.

Pros: Fast booting and great image

Cons: Could use more options for apps. Doesn't include option for any HBO streaming so I still need my Roku 4.

Disc & USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray UHD BD-ROM, BD-ROM, 3D-BD, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.

Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware & Software Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The player's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the player's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade via Network or USB.

Note: Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

USB 3.0 + Ripping: The Samsung UHD Blu-ray disc player features a front-panel USB 3.0 (type-A) port that allows playback of a variety of audio files (up to 192kHz), still-image files, and video files (up to 4K) stored on a USB mass storage class device (formatted in FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS). The player even allows you to rip CD-Audio to a connected USB msc device, or copy non-copyrighted music, video, and photo images from a CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, BD-R/RE disc, or even a connected network device onto a compatible USB device. You select between three ripping formats.

  • WAV lossless copy (best)
  • MP3 320 kbps (better)
  • MP3 192 kbps (good)
Note: A USB device consuming more than 5V/1A requires a separate power supply device for normal operation.

Media File Formats: The Samsung UBD-K8500 Blu-ray disc player supports the following video, photo, and music files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD-R discs; or downloaded onto a USB thumbdrive.

Media Type Format
Video MPEG, MKV, WMV, AVI, AVCHD
Photo JPEG, PNG, BMP, MPO
Music MP3, WMA, AAC, AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, OGG

Video Section

HDMI 2.0a Output + HDMI Audio Only Output: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the "Sub" HDMI output does not output video signal). The "Main" HDMI 2.0a output can be used to carry both video and digital audio all in one cable. You can choose to use the "Sub" HDMI output to send audio only to your A/V receiver and the "Main" HDMI to send only video to your HDTV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 2160p.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: With stunning UHD 4K, Samsung's UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player gives you 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD and boasts incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like never before. You can even upscale your favorite non-4K video content and enjoy it in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this Samsung UHD Blu-ray Player and your Ultra HD TV.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video: With HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Player delivers dynamic UHD content in exceptional quality with a greater range of color contrast and brightness, enhancing details from the original film format. Experience sharp contrasts and brightness with deeper blacks and brighter whites.

Note: This Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports HDR 10, but does not support Dolby Vision HDR.

WCR (Wider Color Range): The Samsung UBD-K8500 supports up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of ultra high-definition video. This allows the Ultra HD Blu-ray player to offer twice the color range of existing conventional Blu-ray players and 64x higher color expressions, surpassing the digital cinema standard. As a result, you'll get to enjoy realistic picture quality like never before.

Deep Color & x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The Samsung UBD-K8500 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The UBD-K8500 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

Movie Frame (24fps): Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24fps (frames-per-second). When a movie is transferred to Ultra HD Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second, the UBD-K8500 will output that signal to the TV at a resolution of 1080i, 1080p, or 2160p with no need for conversion for improved picture quality when watching a movie.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung UBD-K8500 UHD Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition  (720p/1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses.

Video Settings:  The Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray disc offers a variety of video adjustments to fine tune the TV's picture image.

  • Screen Size: You can enter the actual screen size (up to 116") of your TV, so that the player can adjust the image according to the screen size and display an optimal image.
  • TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the UBD-K8500 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 16:9 Original, 16:9 Full, 4:3 Letter Box, and 4:3 Pan-Scan.
  • Picture Mode: Picture Mode enables you to adjust video quality when the player is connected to your TV.
    • Standard: Suitable for most viewing applications.
    • Movie: Suitable for watching movies.
    • Dynamic: Increases sharpness.
    • User: Lets you adjust the sharpness and noise reduction function manually.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

  • DTS Neo:6 Mode: You can enjoy multichannel sound via the HDMI output from a 2 channel audio source.

This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
  • Audio Sync: In some cases when the player is connected to a TV, the audio signal may not synchronize with the video signal. If this occurs, adjust the audio delay time to match the video signal. You can set the audio delay time between 0 msec and 250 msec.

Multiroom Link Compatible: The UHD Blu-ray Player easily integrates into Samsung's Multiroom Link System (sold separately). Enjoy your movies, TV and music wirelessly with rich, multi-room sound and no cluttering cords. Pop in a disc and hear its incredible sound on any compatible speaker in your home.

  • AllShare DLNA: The Samsung UHD Blu-ray disc player's AllShare function, along with its DLNA Certification allow you to watch videos (MPEG), photos (JPEG), and listen to music (MP3/WMA/AAC/FLAC) saved on your Windows PC (or other DLNA Certified media server) through the TV via its Ethernet (LAN) port or built-in WiFi (wireless). This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.
Note: For AllShare/DLNA, Windows PCs with XP and Vista installed require Samsung's PC Share Manager software, which can be downloaded for free from the Samsung Download Center. Not compatible with older Windows OS versions and Mac.

I heard great things about this player. I have owned it for awhile now and I compared it to the Panasonic UHD 900 and the Oppo UHD 203. It was between the UBD-K8500 and Xbox One S. I opted for the dedicated 4K Blu Ray player as it seems to have a more robust feature set and supports a wider variety of 4K TV's without the problems some have experienced with Xbox compatibility. I also think the UBD-K8500 might do a better job of upscaling 1080p video content, which the Xbox purportedly does not do. I will wait for the nextgen Xbox for 4K gaming and by then they should have worked out the bugs in the 4K TV compatiblity. [ Robert E.  Dec 01, 2016 ]

I have a Samsung UBD K8500 4k Ultra HD-Blue Ray Player with High Dynamic Range and a Sony XBR-70x850B 4k Ultra HD TV without High Dynamic Range. What changes should I make in my connection or setting due to the Sony 4k television not having High Dynamic Range? Please provide a very helpful answer!!

A
Under the settings, choose: HDMI Color Format: Auto HDMI Deep Color: Off This would be the same setting you set up a 4K UHD TV with HDR as well. The system should auto detect your set accepts 4k resolution but not HDR. Hope this helps.

I have all my equipment running through my pioneer sc-95 receiver and then have 4k cable going to my sony xbr930-d tv. I keep seeing people saying run one hdmi cable to the tv and the other one to your audio receiver. In my situation cant I just run the one cable to my receiver and have video and the 7.1 dolby atmos sound? Thank you

A
Okay, this is the way my set-up is running but what I am telling you here may not work for you as my entire system is a dedicated Samsung system except for my receiver which is a Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A2060. My hook up is very simple and takes less than 15 minutes, I have the Samsung curved 9000 series TV, which uses the CONNECT ONE and the UBDK-8500, 9 SPEAKERS and TWO SUBS... I run all HDMI. 1) from the ARC on CONN- ONE to the ARC on my receiver, then 2) BLU-RAY to CONN-ONE HDMI and AUDIO to HDMI on Receiver THEN I RUN MY YPAO set up and I'm ready to go. Since the TV and Player interface it is a match made in heaven. Hope this helps you..
[ JANET C  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
You can if that receiver has 4K pass through. If it does not, you will need to run two cables.
[ ROY L  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
Yes, as long as your receiver can pass 4k 60hertz, hdr, and has the recent hdmi compliance. Some receivers claim 4k but are limited
[ JARED  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
Yes
[ Pete  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
The reason for the double HDMI output is receivers that do not feature HDMI2.0 4K full pass through. I believe the SC95 has this feature and will work fine the way you described.
[ Andrew  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
In your case, you have a modern receiver that is full 4K and HDCP 2.2 compliant, so yes you can just run a single cable to the receiver. The 2nd cable is only needed if you have an older receiver that is not 2.2, which would not allow proper viewing of UHD video.
[ Tcramer  Sep 16, 2016 ]
A
If it's 2.2 compliant

This player lists two HDMI ports one for 4k video / audio and one that is audio out only. Does this mean I can use the audio out port to connect to my older HDMI 1.4 reciever? I don't see why not as nothing has changed with high res audio
[ John  Aug 23, 2016 ]
2 answers
A
Yes
[ George  Dec 14, 2016 ]
A
Yes. The 4K video goes directly to to TV HDMI input. If this is a new 2016 LG TV, you must first turn on the HDMI (Ultra HD Deep Color). Simply access the "Gear Botton" on the remote, click on "All Settings" at the bottom of right side of screen. Click on "General" on the left side of screen and scroll down to "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" and click; and click "on" the HDMI you require (i.e. HDMI 1, 2 or 3).

I purchased the first of the True 4K players from Samsung; I really don't know if it supports don't Dolby vision.
[ Sam  Jul 26, 2016 ]
A
As far as I know this is the only 4k player on the market right now. Others are upscalers not true 4k. I do not know about dolby vision but this one is hdr and hdcp 2.2 which allows the latest updates.

This player supports HDR and does an amazing job! From what I've read 'Dolby Vision is a standard for what's often referred to as HDR (high dynamic range)'.

You may want to check out the article at the following link from Jan 2016 - http :// www. flatpanelshd. com/news.php? subaction = showfull&id = 1453292591 According to the article, none currently support Dolby Vision "None of the announced Blu-ray players support Dolby Vision. They do support the HDR10 format, which is mandatory. Dolby Vision is optional and it is worth noting that Samsung, Sony and Philips are not Dolby Vision partners. LG is, and if LG intends to launch a UHD Blu-ray player there is a good chance that it will be the first to support Dolby Vision to complement the company's OLED TVs." I will say that I love my Samsung UBD-K8500 and the picture quality is great when connected to my Sony XBR-65X850C while watching a 4K UHD disc with HDR. The sounds quality is great as well with Dolby Atmos.

Nothing yet. I did hear rumors that the PS4 Neo and Xbox one Scorpio (both out next year) might support it. Probably depends more on movie studios support.

Absolutely, this unit supports anything 4K, and is probably the best 4K player on the market except for the OPPO models which run into the 1,000's.. Sincerely, Maurice and Janet Walker

Q
I have an older receiver without HDMI connections. Would I be able to get 7.1. on my receiver if I used an optical cable?
[ Thomas  Apr 07, 2016 ]
1 answer
A
If your receiver offers 7 channels of amplification, it should have some "surround modes" to utilize the additional 2-channels. For true 7.1 audio from a blu-ray player, you will need the HDMI connection and a receiver that supports the 7.1 decoding formats. I hope that helps! I would like to know if this works with sony xbr65x850d & sony xbr65x930d TV?

I use it with an LG EG9600 4k oled tv. The image is superior compared to streamed sources. I am quite sure it will work with any 4k tv as long as the hdmi port is 4k hdcp compatible.
[ dilraj  Apr 06, 2016 ]
A
it should since it connects through HDMI which will detect your TV's resolution automatically
[ Johannes  Apr 06, 2016 ]
A
the 930d should do uhd that would be the determining factor of what you'd get for performance-the tvs uhd capability
[ stephen  Apr 05, 2016 ]
A
Yes it will work with the Sony
[ WINSTON  Apr 05, 2016 ]
A
IT should work with any tv if it has hdmi and is capable of at least 1080 resolution. However if your tv isn't 4k it is an expensive and unnecessary purchase for a blu ray player there are many cheaper blu ray players.
[ Pete  Apr 05, 2016 ]
A
Yes it will work with both models!
[ DARYL  Apr 05, 2016 ]
A
It should work well with both of those sets as they are UHD with HDR and HDCP 2.2 HDMI ports.
[ Tcramer  Apr 05, 2016 ]

Works with my 2015 XBR75X850C - so pretty sure it will work with the 2016 models you mention, since both of those 2016 models also support HDR. Ultra 4K blu-rays played on this player look amazing on my XBR75X850C - and automatically put the TV's Picture Mode into HDR. Good stuff.

Q
When using PCM on the UHD K -8500, I only get the stereo lights on my Pioneer SC-85. I am using dual HDMI cables, main to my XBR65X850C and the audio to my SC-85. When I switch to bitstream, I get 7.1. Shouldn't I get the 7.1 lights on when using PCM? Thank.
[ Gordon  Feb 28, 2016 ]

A
You must send bitstream to your Pioneer receiver to let it do the decoding. That's why the 7.1 lights are active when you do so.
