Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring and Automation Kit

The Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit contains everything you need to get started.

Home automation at the tip of your finger

Imagine using an app on your phone to control the electronic devices in your house, no matter where you are. With the Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit, you'll enjoy easy home automation at the tap of an app. You can remotely turn connected devices on and off, or be alerted when a window or door is opened. Everything is controlled from your phone or tablet.

It's easy to get started

There are three parts to the SmartThings system: the hub, the app, and the connected devices (known as Things). The system starts with the hub, which is the conductor for all of your wirelessly connected devices.

Setup is a breeze. Simply plug the hub into your router with the included Ethernet cable, and into the wall for power. You'll control it through the free SmartThings Mobile app (Apple®/Android™/Windows®) on your phone or tablet. This gives you full access to all of the connected devices that you have in your home. Each time you add an additional SmartThings product, you will see it appear within the app. A few taps of the finger later, and you're up and running.

Do more than just turn stuff on and off

The SmartThings family is an ecosystem that is designed to make your existing lifestyle easier, safer, and more fun. With optional accessories like the arrival sensor, you can receive a text when your child arrives home from school. If there is water in your basement, the water leak sensor will alert you so you won't come home from vacation to a flooded basement. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. You can also use the SmartThings app to create custom commands that are triggered by certain events.

Use the included motion sensor and outlet in tandem so that when you wake up fresh coffee begins to brew. Automatically, the local news starts to play through your Sonos® PLAY:1 speaker in the kitchen. Use your phone as a proximity sensor, and with an optional smart door lock your front door will unlock as you pull into the driveway. Your home can be locked and unlocked remotely from your phone anytime, anywhere. You'll never need to hide a key again.

SmartThings plays nicely with others too

Samsung's SmartThings is designed around an open platform. Not only can you use SmartThings accessories, but there are a wide range of products from different companies that easily integrate into the system. You can add light bulbs, thermostats, cameras, door locks, wireless speakers and more. Control everything from a single app. Here are some products that we carry that work beautifully with your SmartThings system:

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this system installed in my vacation house for about 10 months now, and continue to be disappointed. The initial set up was an issue, and trying to get assistance from Samsung is frustrating at best (e-mail support only), especially when it is a place where you are not living full time. Once my initial set-up problems were resolved, the system worked fine for a while (although I have never been able to get the system to be based on the correct time, something that you wouldn't think would be difficult to resolve - again more problematic working via e-mail support!). For the past several months, I have been plagued with sensors that shut off (at least I think they are - the dash board shows them OK, but the "My Home" tab shows them unavailable with the link for 'help topics' also not working), and others that detect false-alarm intrusions repeatedly. I have a webcam (separate from this system) so I can immediately check on the intrusion alarms - all have been false alarms. At other times I will open a door, with no intrusion detected at all. Basically I have found this system to be a waste of money if I cannot rely on the door and motion sensors to work properly when I am away from the property for a couple of weeks at a time.

Cons: see above

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, Crutchfield is great as usual. I'm glad they are venturing off and offering other electronics. The Smartthings item is great. Pros: 1. Easy set up 2. Things are very responsive (virtually no lag) 3. Things paired easily Cons: 1. Motion sensor doesn't work through windows since it is IR (I didn't know that prior to purchase but not anyone's fault) 2. iPad app isn't full screen. However iPhone app is full screen

Easy to set up and works good Also works with other products like wifi bulbs and camera So far so good

Pros: Fast and easy setup

Cons: False alarms

Not worth the cost

Denise from Oxnard, CA on 4/24/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this because they advertised that you can connect "hundreds" of devices to the hub. Not true. I was able to pair the "things" that came with the hub but that's it. I have tried to pair Cree bulbs (four different bulbs) reset them many times as instructed. Spent hours and hours of time trying different methods and chatting and live talking with tech support. The best they did was send me to a user forum. That was interesting but also useless. I would personally advise against purchasing this product if you have hopes of connecting light bulbs. I should also add that, in addition to the Cree bulbs, I attempted to connect GE link and Phillips Hue bulbs. The hub just cannot "find" any of them. Really expensive hub that is basically worthless unless you will just be happy with door and motion sensors. Wish I had returned this and gone with the less expensive wink hub.

Pros: It works with the motion and door sensors it came with

Cons: Will not connect to Cree, Phillips, or GE zigbee light bulbs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice system, easy to add the devices that came with it. Great price on a one day sale from Crutchfield!

Pros: Works well

Cons: Only Con is that after I had it up for few days Samsung did something to cause the Hub to go offline. However they did email me to let me know and all I had to do was cycle the Hub to get it back up and running.

Great Kit!

Cons: Only comes in white...

Hands-on research

Product Research

Overview: The Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit contains several sensors and a central monitoring hub that helps you make sure your home is safe. The kit contains a Hub, 2 Multipurpose Sensors, a Motion Sensor, and a Smart Outlet. Optional sensors can be added to the system to give you a complete home monitoring system. The SmartThings monitoring system is controlled via Wi-Fi and the SmartThings Mobile app for your smartphone or tablet. No contracts or monthly fees are required to monitor your home with the SmartThings kit.

SmartThings Hub: The SmartThings Hub pulls all of the elements of the monitoring system together: all of the sensors, your smartphone or tablet, the SmartThings Mobile app, and the SmartThings cloud. The Hub wirelessly connects all of the sensors around your home so they can send information to your smartphone, or to each other. The Hub needs to be connected to power and your network (AC adapter and Ethernet cable included). In addition to the Ethernet cable, the Hub has ZigBee (2.4 GHz), Z-Wave (900 MHz), and Bluetooth radio compatibility to support other devices. The Hub comes with 4 "AA" batteries that serve as backup power for approximately 10 hours, in case of a power outage. Dimensions: 4.237" x 4.894" x 1.375", Weight 7.68 ounces.

Note: This Home Monitoring Kit contains the 2nd generation of the Hub (Hub v2).

SmartThings Mobile App: The SmartThings Mobile app for your smartphone or tablet lets you easily control, monitor, and secure your home from virtually anywhere in the world. The app is available from the Apple App Store for iOS devices running version 7.0 or later, from Google Play for Android devices (version varies with device), and from the Microsoft Store for Windows mobile devices.

Included Sensors: The SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit includes the following sensors:

  • Multipurpose Sensor (2): The SmartThings multipurpose sensor is much more than a simple open/closed sensor for windows or doors. Its built-in accelerometer can monitor vibration, so you can place one on your door to detect someone knocking, or on the washing machine to let you know when the laundry is done. An orientation sensor can also inform you the status of a garage door or other objects. It also has a temperature sensor to let you know if the room gets too hot or cold. The sensor and magnet can be mounted using the included screws or dual-sided adhesive. Dimensions: Sensor: 1.348" x 1.946" x 0.709", Magnet: 0.537" x 1.499" x 0.541", Weight 0.64 ounces.
  • Motion Sensor: The SmartThings Motion Sensor lets you know when movement is detected in your home, and can trigger a response to that movement. Responses can range from turning lights on or off, triggering sirens or other electronics to turn on. Your smartphone will also receive an instant notification when unexpected motion is detected. The sensor has a wide field of view of 120°, and a detection range of 15-20 feet. It can be placed on a table or shelf, or wall mounted using the included adhesive or screws. The Motion Sensor is powered by a CR2450 battery (installed). Dimensions: 2.047" x 2.146" x 0.996", Weight 1.3 ounces.
  • Outlet: The SmartThings Outlet lets you control, automate, and monitor electrical devices in your home. The Outlet gives you the ability to turn on lamps or small appliances manually using the app, or automatically when triggered by other events through the Hub. Dimensions: 2.41" x 2.605" x 1.586" (2.4" including plug), Weight 4.2 ounces.

Optional Sensors: In addition to the included sensors, you can add many other optional sensors to the Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit. All of the sensors require the use of the SmartThings Hub.

  • Arrival Sensor: The SmartThings Arrival Sensor lets you know who comes to and leaves from your home. The sensor is a small device that you can attach to a child's backpack, a pet's collar, or your car. You'll receive a notification on your smartphone when your child or pet leaves or arrives at your home. You can keep the Arrival Sensor in your car to automatically turn on lights when you get home. When kept on your keychain, you can trigger the sensor to emit a beeping noise to help you find your keys at home. The Arrival Sensor is powered by a CR-2032 battery (installed). Dimensions: 0.998" x 1.932" x 0.506", Weight 0.38 ounces.
  • Water Leak Sensor: The SmartThings Water Leak Sensor is a wireless device that is placed on the floor of your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room to immediately alert you when a water leak is detected. The sensor can also monitor temperature, and can automatically turn on a portable heater if the temperature drops (SmartThings Outlet required). The Water Leak Sensor is powered by a CR-2 battery (installed). Dimensions: 2.379" x 1.474" x 0.84", Weight 1.4 ounces.

Works With SmartThings: Numerous devices from Samsung and other manufacturers can be added to the SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit:

  • SmartCam HD Pro: The Samsung SmartCam HD Pro can be activated by the motion sensor or other activity, and can stream live video or send video clip notifications to your phone.
  • Samsung Wireless Soundbars: Samsung Wireless Multiroom Curved Soundbars are compatible with the SmartThings monitoring system, allowing you to control playback remotely, or automatically begin music playback when you arrive home.
  • Bose SoundTouch: The SmartThings Hub can trigger a Bose SoundTouch wireless music system to start playing your favorite music when you get home. You can also control the volume and music playback using your smartphone.
  • Smart Locks: Smart door locks from Yale, Schlage, Kwikset, and other manufacturers can be set to lock and unlock as you come and go, and allow you to lock and unlock the doors from anywhere.
  • Light Bulbs: Connected LED light bulbs from Belkin, Osram, and Cree can be controlled (turned on/off and dimmed/brightened) remotely through the SmartThings Mobile app, and can be set to turn on or off as a response to motion detection or the arrival sensor.
  • Thermostats: Using the SmartThings Mobile app, you can control and monitor the temperature in your home, saving money on your energy bills. Connected thermostats from Honeywell, ecobee, 2Gig, and other manufacturers are compatible.

No, it will not. [ Rodney  Dec 22, 2018 ]
Buy an Amazon Firetv Cube. It will control all functions of the tv plus cable or satellite with voice. That's the best solution. The SmartThings hub is better suited as an interface to home automation such as lighting in my opinion. [ POORANG  Dec 22, 2018 ]
