Our take on the Wharfedale Diamond 240

The Diamond 240 sits is the "sweet spot" of Wharfedale's Diamond 200 Series floor-standing speakers. It's the least expensive tower speaker in this line to employ a three-way design, distributing frequencies among two 6-1/2" woofers, a 5-1/8" midrange driver, and a 1" soft dome tweeter. Its neutral tone and strong bass response make it ideal for reproducing natural, lifelike sound in medium- to large-sized rooms.

Awesome for music and movies

Use a pair of Diamond 240s to anchor the front soundstage of a Wharfedale home theater system. This speaker is also equally impressive as part of a stereo music system, delivering dynamic sound throughout its frequency range.

Solid construction

Wharfedale paid special attention to the design of the 240's enclosure. They used advanced computer modeling to craft a non-resonant cabinet with stiff walls and solid internal bracing. A slot-loaded port on the underside of the tower reinforces bass performance.

Bi-amp or bi-wire for even better sound

On the back of the 240 you'll find two sets of speaker input terminals. These let you bi-amp or bi-wire your speaker to get the best sound out of it.

Build a full system

Pair the 240 with other models from the Diamond 200 series for voice-matched sound:

Great overall sound

Gary from New York, NY on 2/7/2019

When I first set them up and listened they sounded horrible, like they were enclosed in a box with dead tweeters. That's when I remembered the impedance selector on my Yamaha A-S501. After setting that correctly (they are 4 ohm speakers) they opened up and now sound fantastic. Very open, balanced, and detailed. No window shaking bass, but a sub can be used if you want that. And as a bonus, my wife thinks they look good! Scratch and dent was great, one speaker came with a broken bottom piece below the bass port but in the box was a new one. Very simple to change out and there are no other imperfections at all.

Pros: Great sound. Looks great in my room. Crutchfield service.

Cons: None that I can think of.

These Are Amazing

Solid speakers. These speakers have tight crisp sound and surprising deep bass for the size. Brought my old-school system back to life...

Pros: Kool modern looking cabinets.

Cons: Hard to maneuver on my hardwood floor with the pointed metal feet and bases.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Almost all speakers are seen more than heard so aesthetics becomes important. These speakers are attractive without being dominant in a room setting. I tried both the single wiring and the bi-wiring wiring arrangement on these speakers because some commenters indicated that bi-wiring was superior to single. Some consider be-wiring to be a gimmick, so I was not sure there would be the improvement mentioned in other comments. I did find the single wiring to produce a good quality sound that had both acceptable highs and lows. The bi-wiring was more effort to complete as I had four speakers to connect. Two to a receiver and two to a amplifier. The end result was that the bi-wiring had a slightly more airy sound that I preferred. These are well made speakers that all the research I read indicated are a quality product. I recommend these speakers.

Pros: Attractive appearance and quality sound.

Cons: The bi-wiring arrangement is a bit of a challenge with connecting to receivers and amplifiers.

After buying these I was initially disappointed. Certain frequencies were suppressed, the sound appeared "congested" whenever multiple instruments came into play and the highs sounded as if they were clipping. I was powering them with an NAD 1600 preamp/tuner, a Rotel RB-1050 with 100 w/pc RMS at 4 ohms, using Audioquest Type 2 cables in the standard single wiring arrangement...with those gold-colored shorting bars between the speaker terminals. I found I could not listen to some music. As last-ditch effort, I replaced the cables with dual runs of 16 ga cable (for testing purposes) and removed those gold-colored jumpers; in a bi-wired configuration. VOILA! The speakers opened up as intended and exceeded my expectations. Fantastic sound, unbelievable imaging and mid-range, plenty of convincing bass when called upon. They sound as beautiful as they look. Give them a list (but get rid of the jumper bar) -- Crutchfield has been fantastic through the who period.

Pros: Open sound with fantastic imaging and mid-range vocals. Bass performance doesn't require a subwoofer (for music)

Cons: get rid of the shorting bar and run a cable jumper, or bi-wire

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I REALLY like these speakers! I owned a nice set of 3-way speakers back in the 80's, but in the 90's I fell into the subwoofer/satellite craze and dwelled there for many years. I had some nice bookshelf speakers over the years (JBL, Polk, Klipsch, Infinity, Wharfdale) and enjoyed them all. Recently however, I started getting curious about floorstanding speakers again, with the advancements in technology and the tower designs that don't occupy any more floor space than bookshelf speakers on stands. I'm very glad I did! These towers look and sound great, and now I remember what I was missing from my 3-way speakers back in the 80's. I love the way each instrument and vocal comes through clearly, and the overall sound is so warm and balanced. I'm using them primarily for music but they are part of a home theater so they will get some use for movies as well (the matching center channel for these is also great). They do require some power to drive them. I'm using a Denon X4200W AVR (125 watts per channel). I have them bi-amped using 12-gauge wire and I'm loving the sound. Got these at Black Friday pricing and couldn't be happier.

Pros: Clear, detailed, and balanced sound Unique styling Big speaker sound in a small footprint Can get by without a subwoofer, for music at least

Cons: Power hungry

Product Research

3-Way Driver Design: The Wharfedale Diamond 240 is a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker which incorporates a 1" fabric soft-dome tweeter, 5.125 woven kevlar midrange driver, and two 6.5" woven kevlar cone woofers. Finely tuned crossovers guarantee a smooth transition between the tweeter, midrange, and woofers with an enjoyable audible experience, both on and off-axis.

  • Fabric Soft-Dome Tweeter: The 1" tweeter uses a sheer fabric dome and advanced ferrite magnet system, surrounded by a carefully crafted wave guide that encourages outstanding midrange performance too.
  • Woven Kevlar Woofer Cones: Semi-elliptical "break-up" areas on the woven-kevlar woofer cones (including the 5.125" midrange & dual 6.5" woofers) smooth the response through the audible range. The cone edges are treated with a unique diamond pattern rubber surround.

Non-Resonant Cabinet: The speaker cabinet combines layers of particle board and MDF, bonded in a unique structure to damp annoying resonances and block internal sound leakage. The result is that the "noise" and distortion from cabinet walls are buried more than a 35dB below the driver output. Cabinet walls and internal bracing were developed using Wharfedale's latest "Virtual Speaker" software, with the help of Delayed Cumulative Spectral Analysis. The top, bottom, and side walls of the cabinets are finished with a wood veneer (black, rosewood, or walnut), while the baffle is finished with a gloss black lacquer.

Bass Port: Exiting the base of the speaker cabinet is a slot loaded distributed port created by the plinth. This equalizes the air pressure to mimic that inside the cabinet allowing a smooth transition between the pressure variation in the cabinet and the low frequency sound developed in the room.

Dual Binding Posts: The floorstanding loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumper-plates. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, & banana plugs (single only). Using these dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker provides improved bass & treble performance. If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.

Spike Feet & Isolation Pucks: The Wharfedale Diamond 240 floorstanding loudspeaker comes with four spike feet for carpet installation. Four isolation pucks with foam padding are also included to protect your hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl flooring. The spike feet screw into the bottom of the speaker cabinet's plinth and are adjustable so you can level up the speaker. The spike feet can be placed directly on carpet or set in the isolation pucks to protect hardwood, tile, and laminate, and vinyl flooring. The isolation pucks add approximately 0.25" to the overall height of the speaker.

Placement: Try to position the loudspeakers equidistant (6.5' to 13') from one another and the main listening position. The speakers should be "toed" or angled (15° to 40°) into the main listening position. The speakers can be positioned as close as 2.3125' to 3.3' from a side facing wall. There should be a distance of at least 0.6875' to 3.3' between the back of the speaker cabinets and the wall (the speakers' bass extension will improve if they are positioned closer to a wall or corner).

Diamond Series: The Wharfedale Diamond series consists of three floor-standing loudspeakers (Diamond 230 / Diamond 240 / Diamond 250), three bookshelf loudspeakers (Diamond 210 / Diamond 220 / Diamond 225), and two center-channel speakers (Diamond 220C / Diamond 240C) - all sold separately.

Why did you buy this?

Reviews were great. And reasonable price for floor speakers [ Stephen  Apr 15, 2018 ]
I wanted a nice pair of floor standing speakers to compliment the Cambridge Topaz SR 20 Stereo amplifier. [ MICHAEL  Dec 05, 2018 ]
based off reviews online and here I was looking for good dispersion similar to B&W but cheaper. Reviews stated Kevlar cone provided similar results, as well as being know for warmth. These are the main characteristics I found when demoing other units. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to demo Warfedale so fingers crossed my research and reviews adds up. [ daniel  Aug 23, 2018 ]
Online reviews were very helpful. That said, Jenny in chat was very helpful and closed the deal! Thank you Jenny. [ JAMES  Jul 17, 2018 ]
The warmer sound and beautiful looks sold me on this speaker! [ Steven  Feb 18, 2018 ]
