About the Andover Audio Model-One Turntable Music System

An innovative all-in-one sound system

Here's a system that brings together a vintage vibe with modern features in a way that's totally refreshing and unique. Andover Audio's Model-One Turntable Music System integrates a high-quality turntable and Bluetooth streaming with a full-fledged built-in speaker system. With lesser all-in-one systems, you might expect that combination to introduce noise and distortion. But not with this one: Andover's proprietary IsoGroove™ technology eliminates feedback between speakers and turntable, so they can be mounted in the same enclosure and still sound great.

The turntable

This isn't some off-brand knockoff turntable — it's built by Pro-Ject (a brand we love here at Crutchfield) and based on their popular Debut Carbon Esprit SB. It features a factory-installed Ortofon 2M Silver Cartridge, 8.6" carbon fiber tonearm and a low resonance acrylic platter. This fully manual belt-drive turntable that can play records at 33-1/3, 45, and 78 rpm (with an optional 78 rpm-compatible cartridge).

The speakers

The integrated speaker system combines four 3-1/2" aluminum woofers and two Air Motion Transformer tweeters. I've always enjoyed this sonic pairing — rigid-yet-flexible aluminum woofers provide punchy lows and mids, which the AMT tweeters complement with accurate and detailed high frequency response.

That capable driver array is powered by a 150-watt Class D amplifier, and the front-panel selector lets you choose your preferred sound: there are standard Stereo and Mono listening modes, plus a Panoramic mode that enhances the stereo image and widens the soundstage.

Wired and wireless connections

The Model-One is certainly capable of functioning as a stand-alone music source, but it includes several inputs and outputs that allow you to expand it. There's a stereo RCA pair and a 3.5mm input for analog sources, plus digital optical and coaxial inputs. A USB Mini Type-B port lets you connect a computer and play CD-quality music files. Outputs include an RCA stereo pair for connecting a separate amp or pair of powered speakers, and a mono RCA out for connecting a powered subwoofer.

The system includes Bluetooth 4.2 with high-quality aptX® streaming. For listening to tunes over your Wi-Fi network, you can add Andover's compact-but-capable Songbird streamer.

Build a space-saving, great-sounding Andover Audio system

Andover Audio's modular system allows you to construct a complete sound system with the components stacked neatly together. For example you could build a system containing a Model-One subwoofer with a Model-One upper stand full of records above it and a Model-One Turntable System on top. Or you can prioritize record storage by starting with a Model-One lower stand instead of the sub.

It's a self-contained sound system without the typical sprawl of standard entertainment center furniture. Thanks to Andover's brilliant, game-changing engineering, it all works together beautifully.

About Andover Audio

Andover Audio is the audio engineering equivalent of a musical supergroup. Audio experts hailing from Cambridge, Bose, Harman, and other legendary companies brought their talents together at Andover in 2012 — originally to provide complementary services to other companies. Since then, they've gradually turned their unique mixture of design, engineering, and manufacturing knowhow toward the creation of their own product line — one that artfully blends exceptional sound with distinctive design.

Features

Model-One Turntable Music System: The Andover Audio Model-One Turntable Music System features a built-in record player, Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX, a variety of analog & digital inputs, as well as an integrated high-grade amplified sound - all housed in a beautiful hardwood framed cabinet. It can serve as a tabletop turntable music system, or paired with Andover's Model-One Modular Stand System and Model-One Subwoofer (all sold separately) for a self-standing entertainment system.

Integrated Speaker System: The Model-One's integrated loudspeaker system is composed of two Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeters and four 3.5" aluminum diaphragm woofers that are bi-amplified by a powerful Class-D 150W amplifier. The Model-One Turntable Music System features a 270-degree sound field to provide a spacious, room-enveloping sound that defies its compact size. Sound is emitted from both sides and the front of the unit, so be careful not to block the sound from the sides. The Andover Model-One Subwoofer (sold separately) is perfectly matched both sonically and aesthetically to Model-One Turntable Music System, and delivers extended low frequency response (down to 25Hz) to create a full-range audio system with smooth bass performance.

  • IsoGroove Technology: Andover's IsoGroove Technology is a proprietary means of combining a turntable and speaker system in a single compact enclosure, without feedback, resonances, or any other audio-disruptive noise. IsoGroove Technology is a suite of design features that reduce the generation and subsequent transmission of mechanical vibrations through the structure of the Model-One Turntable Music System. This reduces the likelihood they will be picked up by the turntable's stylus, resulting in feedback.
  • Listening Modes & EQ Settings: Stereo and Mono listening modes are readily accessible, as well as a Panoramic mode that enhances the stereo image, making the unit sound like a pair of widely-spaced speakers. The settings menu provides custom adjustment of EQ, satisfying listeners seeking a sound balance that better matches their content or room. You can also set the volume level that you would like the system to turn on to every time (the defualt value is 25).

Custom Pro-Ject Turntable: The Model-One Turntable Music System features a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Espirit SB turntable as its high-grade phono source. The turntable features an Ortofon 2M Silver Cartridge, 8.6" carbon fiber tonearm and low-resonance acrylic platter. You'll get pristine, low-noise playback, without the record wear common in lower-grade alternatives. It plays 33, 45, and 78 RPM records (with optional stylus). An clear plastic dust cover is also included.

  • Belt-Drive Design: The custom designed Pro-Ject turntable employs a belt drive design, plus a low-noise synchronous AC motor with effective motor decoupling (utilizing TPE) for ultimate speed stability. Together, they offer a smoother rotation and improved overall sound quality. It has electronic speed control for 33, 45 (adapter included), and 78 (requires optional stylus) RPM records.
  • Carbon-Fiber Tonearm with Pre-Mounted MM Catridge: The 8.6" single-piece tube carbon fiber tone-arm increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your vinyl recordings. The conical-shaped carbon-fiber arm-tube avoids standing wave reflections. To give you the best "out-of-the-box" performance, the included Ortofon 2M Silver Cartridge is installed and ready for playback. This gives entry-level users the ease-of-use they desire, with stylus upgradability that meets the needs of advanced listeners.
  • Low-Resonance Construction: The Pro-Ject turntable features a medium density fiber (MDF) plinth and comes with a 12" (300mm) acrylic platter and felt mat for low-resonance and un-colored playback.

Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX: Built-in Bluetooth 4.2 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) allows you to playback audio on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop wirelessly through the Andover Model-One Turntable Music System. In addition, to Bluetooth's standard SBC code, the Model-One also supports Qualcomm's aptX codec for higher-quality audio streaming from select Android and Mac devices. You'll still control playback and view song/artist/album info from your Bluetooth source device. You can pair multiple devices with the Model-One, but only one device can be connected and used for playback at a time.

Note: The Model-One Turntable Music System features a Bluetooth receiver to playback Blueooth source devices through the system. It does not feature a Bluetooth transmitter and cannot wirelessly transmit its audio out to other Bluetooth audio systems.

USB-Mini B Port: The Model-One Turntable Music System features a USB-Mini B port that allows you to record your vinyl records or other source inputs to a computer, or playback music from a connected computer. The Model-One does not require any special drivers or software for Windows PC or Mac. It will emulate an external soundcard so that it may be used with any software you choose. On your personal computer, enter the SOUND menu from within your Control Panel or System Preferences. Select "USB CODEC" as the INPUT device for recording, and as the OUTPUT device for playback. You may now use built in apps, such as Windows Media Player or Quicktime, to record or playback from whatever source you have selected on Model One. The USB-Mini B port supports 16-bit/44.1kHz or 16-bit/48kHz.

Note: If you desire additional functionality, there is a variety of software and freeware available on the internet such as Audacity, which will provide features such as pop suppression, format conversion, and track splitting. You are free to use whatever software you like that is compatible with your computer's operating system.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The Andover Model-One Turntable Music System is outfitted with both analog and digital audio inputs. There is an analog stereo RCA input, plus a 3.5mm combo input that can used as a stereo minijack analog or mini-toslink digital input, as well as an optical (toslink) digital audio input and coaxial (RCA) digital audio input. You can use these analog & digital inputs to connect your TV, CD player, and more. You can even use the 3.5mm combo input or optical digital input to connect Andover's Songbird Music Streamer (sold separately); giving you access to Internet Radio and select online music services, as well as AirPlay and DLNA. The 3.5mm combo input and optical digital input support 2ch stereo PCM auio (up to 24-bit/96kHz), while the coaxial digital input can support 2ch stereo PCM audio (up to 24-bit/192kHz).

  • The 3.5mm combo input can be set to automatically turn on the Model-One system when it sinces an active audio signal. After 5 minutes of no input signal, it will turn off.
  • The 3.5mm combo input, optical digital input, and coaxial digital input do not support Dolby Digital, DTS, or other multichannel audio formats.

Analog Outputs: The Model-One Turntable Musisc System is equipped with a stereo RCA preout and mono-RCA sub output. You can use the stereo RCA preout to connect the Model-One Turntable Music System to an external amplifier or set of powered speaker. When using the stereo RCA preout, you can turn off the Mode-One's integrated speaker system. The mono-RCA sub output can be used to connect the Model-One Subwoofer or other powered subwoofer (sold separately). The stereo RCA preout and mono-RCA sub output are both variable with volume control. The stereo RCA preoout has a full-range audio signal, while the mono-RCA sub out has a built-in 200Hz @ 12dB/oct low-pass crossover filter.

Headphone Jack: The front-panel 1/4" headphone jack allows you to connect a set of headphones for private listening. When a set of headphones is connected, the Mode-One's integrated speaker system, stereo RCA preout, and mono-RCA sub output are muted. The headphone output supports 16-10k Ohm headphones.

Graphic User Interface: All functions of the Mode-One Turntable Music System are selected using the menus displayed on the front-panel graphic user interface. The 3-way rotary encoder knob on the front-panel is used to navigate the menu, or you may also navigate by using the included remote control. The front-panel graphic user interface displays Source Input, Volume Level, and Menu Settings. You can adjust the brightness and contrast of the graphic user interface display.

Remote Control: The included remote control is RF (radio frequency) and not IR (infrared), so it doesn't require direct line of sight to the Model-One Turntable Music System. The RF remote wireless controls Power On/Off, Source Selection, Volume Up/Down, Mute, Menu Navigation, Audio Settings, Listening Modes, and other System Prefrences.

Mounting Options: The Model-One Turntable Music System can be used as a stand-alone system and mounted on a flat, solid, and rigid tabletop surface or shelf. The Model-One Turntable Music System can also be used with Andover's Model-One Modular Stand System and Model-One Subwoofer (all sold separately) for a self-standing entertainment system. The modular stand system can be setup in one of two ways.

  • Stand-Alone Turntable: Simply position the Model-One Turntable System on a stable tabletop, shelf, or other flat surface. The Model-On Turntable System measures 18.0625" (w) x 8.8125" to 19.25" (h) x 15.375" (d).
  • Dual-Shelf Stand: Connect an Upper-Stand with a Lower-Stand (both sold separately) to support the Model-One Turntable Music System with storage for up to 200 records (LPs). This combination measures 18.0625" (w) x 41.0" to 51.4375" (h) x 15.375" (d).
  • Subwoofer + Upper-Stand: Connect an Upper-Stand to the Model-One Subwoofer (both sold separately) to create a full-range audio system with storage for up to 100 records (LPs). This combination measures 18.0625" (w) x 41.0" to 51.4375" (h) x 15.375" (d).

Placement Guidelines: As with any sound system, placement in your room will affect how well the sound fills the space.Although placement of the Model-One Turntable Music System is less complex than a typical component system, following these simple guidelines will result in the most enjoyable sound quality.

  • To ensure the most even sound coverage, try to place the system near the center of one of the walls. It should be at, or slightly below, ear height for a seated listener.
  • Using the Model-One Modular Stand System (sold separately) will place the system at the ideal height in most rooms. If not used with the Model-One Modular Stand System, make the tabletop mounting surface is flat, solid, and rigid to prevent unwanted vibration and resonance.
  • Keep the sides of the unit unobstructed by solid objects by at least 12". If the unit will be placed in a corner, angle it at 45-degrees so that the speakers on one side are not blocked. Avoid placing the unit in an enclosed bookshelf or cabinet as this will significantly compromise its performance.

Power Requriements: The Andover Model-One Turntable Music System includes an external AC power adapter with and attached 39" DC cord and a detachable 6.5' AC power cord that will need to be plugged into an AC power outlet or surge protector (sold separately - see Accessories Tab).
