About the Andover Audio SpinBase

An ingenious turntable base with powered speakers built in

The Andover Audio SpinBase is an ingenious device. It has built-in, self-amplified speakers that provide a broad 270-degree stereo soundstage, plus Bluetooth for convenient music streaming. And you can hook up your turntable and put it right on top, because the company's proprietary IsoGroove™ technology eliminates feedback between speakers and 'table. It's compatible with most turntable models on the market, and its minimalist looks will blend right into your decor.

Proprietary IsoGroove™ technology built into the Andover Audio SpinBase lets you place a turntable (not included) on top of the amplified speakers without introducing feedback or vibration.

Versatile connections

The SpinBase has a switchable phono input built-in, but it's labeled a little differently than we're used to. On the back panel, there's an RCA input with ground labeled "magnetic phono" for connecting a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge that needs a phono stage. A nearby stereo RCA input labeled "line level/ceramic cartridge" lets you connect a turntable that's already been pre-amped, one with a ceramic cartridge, or even another line-level source like a CD player. A separate switch lets you engage proper EQ to match a ceramic cartridge.

The output stage includes a 3.5mm headphone output, and a 3.5mm output for adding a compatible powered subwoofer.

My hands-on experience with the Andover Audio SpinBase

When I was hired by Crutchfield, the first piece of gear I bought for myself was a Pro-ject turntable. Over the years, I've connected it to various preamps, integrated amplifiers, and even powered stereo speakers. It's been a reliable source for any system I needed to audition and write about for product pages, catalog articles, and Learn content.

That said, I live in an apartment, and my day-to-day needs don't call for big and loud — just accurate and intimate. The Andover Audio SpinBase has been serving those needs perfectly of late. I enjoy the tactile experience of turning the big volume knob on the front of the speaker platform, and the 270-degree soundfield is perfect for my modest living room. It's worth mentioning that it fits right in with my decor, and lifts my turntable a little higher, so it's easier to clean records, place the stylus in a groove, and make adjustments to the 'table's settings.

The SpinBase falls nicely into a sweet spot for my living situation — it's convenient, looks great, and delivers sweet sound that's not blasting out my next door neighbors. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to add it to my system.

Disclosure: I won the SpinBase in a company raffle when Andover visited Crutchfield's Charlottesville, Virginia headquarters for product training.

Build a space-saving, great sounding Andover Audio system

Andover Audio's modular system allows you to construct a complete sound system vertically — with components stacked on top of one another. For example you could build a system with a SpinSub powered subwoofer neatly tucked in the lower shelf of the SpinStand record stand (sold separately). There's also a shelf to hold the SpinBase, with the SpinDeck turntable (sold separately) resting on the very top. This configuration neatly and cleanly keeps all of your records and "Spin System" equipment in one place.

About Andover Audio

Andover Audio is the electronics equivalent of a musical supergroup. Audio experts hailing from Cambridge, Bose, Harman, and other legendary companies brought their talents together at Andover in 2012 — originally to provide complementary services to other companies. Since then, the company has gradually turned their unique mixture of design, engineering, and manufacturing knowhow toward the creation of their own product line — one that artfully blends exceptional sound with distinctive design.

Features

SpinBase Speaker System: The Andover SpinBase is an all-in-one powered speaker system for turntables, designed for vinyl enthusiasts. It packs room-filling sound, simple operation, and easy connectivity in a compact package that sits comfortably under almost any turntable (sold separately); as long as your turntable's feet fall within the SpinBase's dimensions (18"w x 3.25"h x 13.5"d). It fits perfectly under the Andover SpinDeck and SpinDeck Max turntables (both sold separately).  The SpinBase all-in-one powered speaker system features a durable perforated metal grill, textured top surface, and large knob for improved ergonomics.

270-Degree Soundstage: The Andover SpinBase features a 2-way stereo driver design with two 0.75" soft-dome tweeters and two 4"x1.5" oval woofers that produces an expansive room-filling 270-degree stereo soundstage. The 2-way stereo driver system is powered by an 18 watt (RMS) x 2 channel Class D amplifier that will deliver dynamic, room-filling stereo sound with detail and low-distortion.

IsoGroove Technology: Andover's IsoGroove Technology (patent-pending) is a proprietary means of preventing feedback, resonances, or any other audio-disruptive noise that typically occurs when a turntable is placed next to a speaker system.

EQ Settings: The Andover SpinBase offers separate Bass & Treble controls to fine-tune your music listening experience. The Bass & Treble control knobs are found on the rear-panel of SpinBase. There is also a "Ceramic" switch on the back of the SpinBase which applies specific equalization. If you have a ceramic stylus (common on inexpensive turntables), the equalization will offer a better sound for you. If you have a magnetic stylus, which offers better sound quality, you should leave this switch in the off position.

Phono Input: The SpinBase all-in-one powered speaker system is equipped with a MM Phono input for connection of the SpinDeck, SpinDeck Max, other brand and model of turntable with a MM phono cartridge. You should always connect the ground terminal when connecting a turntable to eliminate or reduce hum.

Note: The SpinBase does not support turntables with MC (Moving Coil) cartridges.

Line-Level Input: The Andover SpinBase is also equipped with a line-level analog stereo RCA input for connecting an analog line-level source device, such as CD player or Andover's Songbird Music Streamer (sold separately).

Note: There are no digital audio inputs.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Built-in Bluetooth with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) allows you to playback audio on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, or laptop wirelessly through the SpinBase speaker system. You can pair multiple devices with the SpinBase, but only one device can be connected and used for playback at a time. You'll still control playback and view song/artist/album info from your Bluetooth source device.

Note: The Andover SpinBase features a Bluetooth receiver to playback Bluetooth source devices through the system. It does not features a Bluetooth transmitter and cannot wirelessly transmit its audio out to other Bluetooth audio systems.

Subwoofer Output: The SpinBase speaker system is outfitted with a mono-minijack (3.5mm) subwoofer output for connection of a powered subwoofer, such as Andover's SpinSub (sold separately).

Headphone Output: The front-panel 3.5mm headphone jack allows you to connect a set of headphones for private listening. When a set of headphones is connected to the SpinBase, the built-in speaker system and mono-minijack subwoofer output are muted. The headphone output supports 16-10k Ohm headphones.

Mounting Options: The Andover SpinBase can be mounted on flat, solid, and rigid tabletop surface or shelf. The SpinBase can also be used with Andover's SpinStand (sold separately).

Power Requirements: The Andover SpinBase all-in-one powered speaker system includes an AC power adapter that will need to be plugged into an AC power outlet or surge protector (sold separately - see Accessories Tab).

I don't believe you can. I've used bluetooth to play spotify on this speaker, but it doesn't try to connect to my headphones.

This is a speaker and amp for a turntable. That being said, there is a headphone out. So you could plug in a Bluetooth transmitter and use that to connect your bluetooth headphones.
