Feel connected to your music and movies
There are three floor-standing speakers in Dynaudio's Excite series, and in many ways the Excite X38 is the Goldilocks model. Its larger woofers deliver more low-frequency power and impact than the smaller X34, and it costs significantly less than the larger X44. At just 40" tall, the X38 is pretty compact, yet it sounds startlingly big whether you're doing some focused listening to your favorite tunes, or just kicking back with a movie.
When Dynaudio visited Crutchfield for training, they set up several pairs of their speakers, including the Excite X38, and played the same music clips through each pair so we could compare. They all produced the precise detail and huge soundstage that are Dynaudio hallmarks. The speakers made even audio demo standbys like Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" and Lyle Lovett's "Church" sound fresh. The X38s weren't the priciest speakers in the group, but when I asked around, most of our folks liked them best.
An expanded sweet spot
You don't have to be sitting in the "sweet spot" to enjoy the X38's expressive performance. Dynaudio borrowed some of the controlled dispersion technology found in the company's pro studio monitors and flagship home speakers.
By fine-tuning the alignment of the drivers on the front baffle, as well as the crossover design, Dynaudio eliminated some of the sound colorations caused by reflections off the floor and ceiling. This focuses more sound on listeners, even improving off-axis response for those sitting off to the sides.
Dynaudio woofers dig deep
All Dynaudio woofers use the company's ultra-rigid, ultra-lightweight Magnesium Silicate Polymer (MSP) cone material, enabling the woofer to stop and start on a dime. An MSP cone is molded in one geometrically perfect piece, which helps to optimize sound dispersion. It also eliminates the need for a separate dust cap, further enhancing the cone's structural integrity.
This full-range 3-way design starts at the top with a 1-1/8" dome tweeter, and right below it is a 5-1/2" MSP midrange. The dual 7" MSP woofers have extraordinarily large 3" voice coils, which help the Excite X38 achieve its nimble, tuneful bass response. Dynaudio relies on high-quality 1st-order filters (6 dB/octave) in their crossovers. This type of filter is known for its excellent transient response, but 1st-order filters demand the finest drivers, with wide frequency response — like Dynaudio's.
A tweeter that sings
When Dynaudio's engineers find something that works, they stick with it. Core designs like Dynaudio's renowned soft-dome tweeters, have been steadily improved and refined over the course of 40 years. The Excite X38's tweeter features a silk dome with a special coating that improves dispersion while eliminating high-frequency breakup. It sounds effortlessly detailed, neutral, and non-fatiguing, even when you crank up the volume.
Both tweeter and woofer use aluminum-wired voice coils that are lighter than traditional copper coils. That means Dynaudio can make larger voice-coils for a given weight. Larger coils exert better control over the dome or cone's movement, which lowers distortion.
Great for music and movies
Dynaudio's expressive, transparent sound suits every kind of music, soft or loud, acoustic or electric. And the qualities that make these speakers so enjoyable for music listening also make for immersive home theater. They can reproduce extreme dynamic range, and dig deeper into the bass than most similarly sized speakers.
The Excite series is one of Dynaudio's lowest-priced speaker lines, but it was developed using the same exhaustive measurements and listening tests the company relies on to develop its price-no-object designs.
The X38's cabinet is ported in the rear to provide a bit of extra low-frequency oomph. A foam plug is included which you can insert in the port to tighten bass response when placing the speaker near a wall. Also, positioning the X38 at least a couple of feet out from any wall will improve the soundstage.
Four stabilizer feet are included, with rubber pads for hard floor surfaces and spikes for carpet. Dynaudio feels that the speaker should not be used without the outrigger feet installed.
With its 4-ohm impedance, the Excite X38 should be driven with high-current, high-quality amplification.
