About the Magellan TR5 Trail and Street
Great guidance for on- or off-road adventures
Great guidance for on- or off-road adventures
Magellan knows that plenty of brave souls out there love to explore more than just the streets defined on a map. Magellan's TR5 Trail and Street portable navigator makes it easy to stay on the right path on the roads, but it really shines for those who roam trails. It sports an easy-to-follow 5" display and comes equipped with 3D and topographic maps for off-road rambles. And the TRX5's Wi-Fi® connectivity lets you save and share your adventures with other bold souls online, so they can check out the amazing rides you've taken.
Maps that'll lead you anywhere
The TR5's basemaps cover the entire U.S. and Canada, giving you a detailed look at your off-road environs, either in topographic 2-D view with contour lines, or in a high-resolution 3-D terrain view to determine elevations and land features. It also includes maps of highways and secondary roads, along with hundreds of thousands of key outdoor and off-road points of interest. A barometric altimeter and 3-axis electronic compass come in handy if you're exploring on foot.
Over 120,000 trails at your disposal
Magellan loaded the TR5 with over 120,000 designated off-road trails, so no matter where you live in the U.S. or Canada, you can start exploring immediately. The routes cover forests and public lands and feature reviews and ratings by other off-road enthusiasts. Just select a trail, hit "Follow," and you're on your way.
Explore new routes
Explore unfamiliar territory with confidence as the Magellan leads the way. You can start recording your trail as soon as you begin your trek, and you can hit the "backtrack" button at any point during your excursion to get guidance back to your starting point along the exact same route. And you'll get a warning if you're veering off a trail you're following, so you can get back on the right path quickly.
Customize your waypoints
The TR5 lets you mark different waypoints with different markers to indicate meetup locations, scenic views, campsites, obstacles, and more. And you can record custom waypoints when you're stopped, using current location, GPS coordinates, and more. Name the waypoint and add audio, photos, and descriptions to make them more attractive. While your vehicle is in motion, you can still save a waypoint, but you won't be able to customize it until you're safely stopped. You can also share trails with others via imported and exported GPX files.
A gorgeous 5" screen
The Magellan's 5" capacitive touchscreen display shows you your surroundings in an eye-friendly manner. You'll enjoy smooth navigation through the user interface, whether you're mapping, tracking your data, or uploading information to social media.
Magellan's TRX Trailhead online portal is where you can share your adventures, find new trails, and interact with other outdoor enthusiasts online, and Magellan made it easy to access through this navigator with built-in Wi-Fi compatibility. You can prepare for your next trip by uploading trails and/or satellite imagery when connected to your home network, and then take advantage of your own portable Wi-Fi hotspot to get online when out in the wild.
TRX Trailhead online
The TR5 features a built-in browser, so you can establish an account through the TRX Trailhead portal and have access to user ratings and reviews of different trails, plus custom trails they've created. You can set up a profile for your vehicle and link to your personal Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts to share your adventures with others online. Your TRX Trailhead account can log your trails, trips, and dirt miles covered, and give you achievement badges for milestones reached and destinations visited. There are also companion smartphone apps you can access when you're away from your TR5 or computer.
Your TRX Trailhead account also lets you rank trails you blaze, including 4-wheel-drive requirements, road conditions, terrain types, pitch, roll, and more. Once you've ranked your trail, you can publish it to the TRX Trailhead online community for sharing and evaluation purposes.
Free map and software updates
Magellan stands by the TR5 with free periodic map and software updates. They're available through Wi-Fi, so you don't even have to hook your TR5 to a computer or download the update to your laptop. A new map update was released in January 2019.

Magellan TR5 Trail and Street reviews
What a piece of junk! First off you can't see the screen because the lighting sucks then after two hours in the desert it just quit working, I'll stick with Garmin from here on out. Don't waste your money on the Magellan junk save yourself a lot of time and trouble and get a Garmin they at least back their product!

I have owned many GPS units over the years and this is worse than any I have ever owned. It is so unintuitive to use and the maps are over a year old and have not been updated. Despite Magellans claim that they are updated several times throughout the year. The software also is old and has not been updated in over a year despite finding references to new software versions on their website. I have been unable to force this to update as it states it is "up to date." Trying to get support from Magellan themselves is nonexistent. I have many phone calls and emails into them with absolutely no response.
Pros: Trail GPS
Cons: Slow Poor Street Navigation Difficult to use Old Maps - Not updated Screen is washed out - difficult to see in bright light or at an angle Expensive

Was hoping to be able to get a GPS that would work for OHV trails and street addresses but the first two addresses I entered both came up as No Results Found. Hardly of any use if it tells me these places don't exist. Also, if you hesitate at all entering an address it starts to search right away even if you just entered a street number. At least with the OHV trails you can get a GPS coordinate and find it that way. Will have to go back to my Garmin for street addresses and just use the Magellan for OHV trails. Disappointing.

The TR5 is pre-loaded with detailed 2D topographic and high resolution (to 10M) 3D terrain views of the United States and Canada. The TR5 comes with USB and AC power adapters, and a windshield suction cup mount.
Display: The TR5 has a 5" color LCD capacitive touch screen display with an 800 x 480 resolution, making it easy to view while you navigate.
Wi-Fi: The device can be connected wirelessly to your smartphone via Wi-Fi through your phone's hotspot. This allows you to connect the unit to the Internet for downloading trails, uploading tracks, getting the latest software and map updates, or connecting with your friends or off-road community through social media.
GPS: The TR5 has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with a built-in multi-directional patch antenna. The GPS receiver is accurate down to 3-5 meters, depending upon signal strength. The device also has a barometric altimeter.
Routes and Trails: The TR5 has over 115,000 preloaded designated OHV (off-highway vehicle) routes that you can navigate with your 4-wheel drive, ATV, motorcycle, or snowmobile. In addition, the TR5 gives you access of thousands of user-generated tracks that can be downloaded from Magellan's growing database. You can access this community database from your mobile device, tablet, or laptop. These trails include observations and rankings from individuals, and allow you to search by location, difficulty, rankings, and other criteria. You can review the trail ahead of time, then save it to your Wish List of future trails to visit. The TR5 comes with free lifetime software and map content updates, available several times per year via Wi-Fi.
Tracking: The Tracking feature lets you track your progress as you navigate a trail, creating a recording of a new track that can be saved and uploaded to the TRX Trailhead community.
Waypoints: You can create waypoints, such as scenic views, campsites, obstacles, and other details as you travel. While you're moving along the trail, the TR5 will only allow you to select a Waypoint type. When you save the trail you have traveled, the Waypoints and its details are saved along with it so they can be viewed by other enthusiasts who choose your trail.
Off-Course Notifications: The TR5 will notify you if you get off-course, and will offer you a guide to getting back to the trail. As soon as you leave the trail, an on-screen message alerts you that you have strayed off-course. The Backtrack feature will guide you safely back to the campsite, entry, or any current trail starting point.
Social Networks: The TR5 can be linked to your Facebook and Twitter accounts for sending posts or tweets to your friends and other members of your off-road community, sharing details of your off-road travels. The unit's hashtag button will even send an automatic, preconfigured tweet from the trail. You must be connected to your smartphone's hotspot, or it will automatically send the post/tweet once the device has a connection.
Dirt Miles: As you travel off-road, the TR5 will keep a count of the cumulative number of miles you have logged when a track is saved to your User Account. As the number of Dirt Miles accumulate, you can earn achievement badges for the number of miles driven or for the type of trails you have traveled.
