Mission LX CONNECT Wireless Speaker System

The LX CONNECT gives you a flexible hub with true wireless powered speakers and minimalist aesthetics (shown in Walnut).

Mission cemented their reputation for state-of-the-art speaker design in the early '80s with their legendary 770 loudspeakers. Innovative design continues in the LX CONNECT speakers — the wireless evolution of their LX line. This speaker system combines modern wireless convenience with the sound quality of a traditional two-channel hi-fi system.

You don't need to run any speaker wire — not even between the left and right speakers like most powered pairs. The included hub sends the uncompressed audio signal wirelessly to each speaker. The hub also offers flexible connections, a premium built-in DAC, and a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Powerful speakers with a unique design

You'll notice the atypical orientation of the rigid 5" composite fiber woofers and 1" microfiber tweeters. Inverted driver placement — with the woofer above the tweeter — is a Mission hallmark. It works with the custom-engineered 60-watt amplifier built into each speaker to give you engaging, detailed, lifelike sound.

And since they have a true wireless connection to the hub, they can go almost anywhere you can get AC power to them — no other physical connections to the speaker needed.

My hands-on review of the Mission LX CONNECT

I had an opportunity to try a sample of the LX CONNECT system in our mother-in-law apartment. It's a tight space, and the only logical place to put speakers is in the built-in shelves on either side of the fireplace. This system's wireless speaker connections and flexible inputs made it a perfect fit.

Immaculate sound from my digital and analog sources

The LX CONNECT doesn't have built-in streaming, but rather uses its excellent built-in DAC to help you make the most of your existing network player or other digital sources. I connected my Bluesound Node with a coaxial digital cable and used the optical input for TV sound. Finally, I connected my turntable — an Audio Technica AT-LP60XBT with a built-in phono preamp — to the 3.5mm analog aux input using an RCA cable with an adapter.

Evoking a live concert feel

By chance, one of the first things that popped up when I loaded the YouTube app via Roku on the TV was some live Grateful Dead footage from a March 27, 1988 show that I actually attended at Hampton Coliseum. It features a nice mix of soundboard and audience recordings, with good instrument separation and electrifying audience energy. The LX CONNECT made the clip sound fantastic — enveloping, clear, and concert-like.

Comparing Bluetooth, wired aux input, and Wi-Fi

My demo included some unscientific, comparative listening with two very different tracks: The Beach Boys' “Surf's Up,” and Rush's “By-Tor and the Snow Dog” — the live version from All The World's a Stage. With each song, I listened on vinyl — first via Bluetooth then with a wired analog connection. Then I listened to high-res streaming versions of both songs in a couple of different ways: from my iPhone via Bluetooth connection, then via Wi-Fi to the Node connected to the hub.

As you might expect, the Bluetooth connections didn't give me the detail and separation that the wired and Wi-Fi did. And the Node definitely sounded better than my entry-level turntable. But I was really impressed even with the Bluetooth audio. The interlocking musical parts and patterns of the nuanced, ethereal “Surf's Up” sounded full and expansive through the system. Rush's tuneful, galloping rock'n'roll fantasy battle-odyssey has extended instrumental sections with great atmospheric volume-swell/Echoplex guitar passages. I was impressed by the way the system allowed those parts to sonically engulf me, and also by the way it presented the rawer passages in a really listenable way.

Making excellent recordings shine

To get an idea what the LX CONNECT can do with a truly modern hi-fi recording, I turned to Animal Collective's Time Skiffs. It's a somewhat unconventional marriage of psychedelic-era Beach Boys, indie-pop, and electronic music with an analog core. Its unpredictable, layered vocal melodies and harmonies wander through super-low synth bass blurts, sparkling instrumental figures that float from left to right in the mix, and exceptionally well-recorded drums. This is where the system really showed its cards, with a clear 3D soundstage that was deep, wide, and spacious.

Hub with high-res DAC and flexible connections

Breaking the connections out of a wireless speaker pair into a hub gives you a more convenient way to connect pretty much anything. You don't have to make connections on the back of one of the speakers, and touchscreen — and remote control — selections are easy to see.

Mission LX CONNECT Wireless Speaker System

The hub's rear panel offers flexible connections and configurations.

You could connect a turntable with a phono preamp to the analog input. It also has an HDMI input for getting great audio from your TV. Any component you connect to the hub's digital inputs will get high-performance decoding via its high-res ESS Sabre DAC.

And if you connect a computer via USB, you can play PCM-based files up to 32-bit/384kHz resolution and DSD files up to 11.2MHz. The hub is "limited" to 32-bit/192kHz resolution when paired to the LX CONNECT speakers. But you can turn off the "wireless" feature to get the maximum resolution from the built-in headphone amplifier or when you use the hub as a preamp.

Wireless Music System: The Mission LX Connect wireless music system combines innovative wireless technology with award-winning loudspeaker design and versatile audio source connectivity for a new level of convenience and performance. The Mission LX Connect system consists of an advanced wireless hub and a pair of wireless powered speakers for dynamic, room-filling stereo sound. The wireless hub intelligently transmits left and right audio signals to the appropriate speaker via uncompressed, 5.8Ghz wireless audio signal transmission with low-latency.  There is no cable between the speakers and hub with no need for the speakers to be connected together via a cable, for "true wireless" audio.

Wireless Hub: The wireless hub acts as the central console for the Mission LX Connect wireless music system. It intelligently transmits left and right audio signals to the appropriate speaker via uncompressed, 5.8Ghz wireless audio signal transmission with low-latency. The wireless hub has a host of connectivity options including USB-B, HDMI ARC, optical & coaxial digital, analog stereo RCA input, and Bluetooth. It is also equipped with the ESS Sabre32 ES9018K2M Reference DAC and hi-fi grade headphone amplifier. The wireless hub can be easily controlled via its OLED touchscreen or the included wireless IR remote.

    • Upon initial operating, the LED indicator of the wireless hub will slowly flash green. This means the speakers are currently not connected to the hub; you will need to pair the speakers with hub
    • To pair the hub with the speakers, press the "Menu" button on the remote or touchscreen, and select the "Enter Pairing" option. Now, press the "Pair" button on the rear of one of the speakers. Please note pairing of the speakers needs to be done individually. Once your first speaker is paired, repeat the process for the second speaker.
    • After pairing, the LED light will remain illuminated green on the wireless hub. After pairing for the first time, you will not need to do this again when turning the system on or off.

Wireless Powered Speakers: The wireless powered speakers are based on Mission's award winning LX-2 MKII speakers for exceptional design and performance. Each speaker features a two-way driver design with a 1" soft-dome tweeter and a 5" DiaDrive midbass woofer powered by a specifically engineered, high-power Class D amplifier rated at 60 watts (120 watt total system power). Mission's proprietary DiaDrive midbass woofer offers superior control of the low-frequency diaphragm, while the refined tweeter delivers accurate high frequency detail. The speakers' precision-tuned crossover network (3.2kHz), rear-firing bass reflex ports, and special cabinet bracing further help to optimize sound performance.

    • IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry): Mission's classic IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry) driver format positions the tweeter below the woofer, meaning the length of path is equalized so the sound waves coincide at the listener's ear level. A proprietary principle that improves "time alignment" and thus transient performance of the Mission speakers
    • Advanced Front Baffle Design: The use of serrations in the woofer's front-baffle baffle assembly and dimples along the front baffle of the tweeter help to scatter interfering reflections from localized surfaces, adding further finesse to driver output and providing a smoother overall frequency response for the speaker.
    • Performance Modes: There are two Performance modes (Music / Movie) you can choose from to tailor the sound of the speaker system. Music mode recommended for listening to music, while Movie mod is recommend for viewing movies.

Note: A switch on the back of the speakers lets you set each speaker to Left, Right, or Mono. Another rear-panel switch allows you to balance the output of the left and right speakers.

Hi-Fi-Grade Headphone Amp: The wireless hub features a built-in, hi-fi grade headphone amplifier with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output jack. When a set of headphones is connected, the system's preout signal will be deactivated. The wireless speakers will still play when headphones are connected. To turn off the speakers, you must turn off "Wireless mode" in the system's menu.

ESS Sabre 9018DAC: The Mission LX Connect wireless music system utilizes an ESS Sabre32 ES9018K2M Reference DAC (digital-to-analog converter) that supports up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM audio files and DSD256 11.2MHz music files via USB-B, as well as up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM via Optical, Coaxial, and HDMI ARC. The hi-res DAC has a choice of 3 digital filters to offer the best performance and compatibility with your digital audio music files.

    • Fast Roll Off: Standard flat response with fast frequency roll of above Fs/2 (half the sampling frequency).
    • Slow Roll Off: Starts rolling of at a lower frequency than the Fast filter, but has a more gentle rate of attenuation. This is the default filter for the LX Connect system.
    • Minimum Phase: Has a gentle attenuation slope similar to the Slow filter, but with minimum phase characteristics. It can be likened to an analog filter applied in the digital domain.

USB-B Port: The USB-B input enables you to connect a Windows PC or Mac to the Mission LX Connect system for playing audio files stored on your laptop or desktop computer. The LX Connect supports up 32-bit/384kHz PCM audio files and DSD256 11.2MHz music files via USB-B. However, these Hi-Res music files are down-mixed to 32-bit/192kHz when listening through the wireless speakers. When listening through the system's headphone output or stereo RCA preout, you can enjoy the native higher resolution performance of 32-bit/192kHz PCM and DSD256 11.2MHz ("Wireless mode" must be disabled in the LX Connect's menu).

    • A Windows PC will require the installation of the USB driver. You can download the driver via
    • Please refer to the USB and DSD Setup Guide supplied with the driver files for further details.

Note: There is also a USB-A port on the back of the hub and each speaker for firmware update and service purposes only.

HDMI ARC: The Mission LX Connect is equipped a HDMI 1.4 ARC jack to connect the speaker system to your TV's HDMI ARC input. The LX Connect's HDMI ARC jack allows audio from your TV to be sent to the speaker system for playback. The HDMI ARC jack supports 2ch stereo PCM audio, up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The Mission LX Connect wireless music system is outfitted with a optical (toslink) digital audio input and a coaxial (RCA) digital audio input. Both digital inputs can support 2ch stereo PCM audio, up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS). There is a DPLL setting (Normal or Wide) that can be used for changing the bandwidth of the digital phase lock loop of the D/A converter to accommodate different levels of jitter on the incoming SPDIF signal.

    • Normal mode should be selected for signals with low jitter, while Wide mode should be selected for signals with abnormal jitter.
    • For best audio quality leave this setting at the default value Normal; only use Wide for a given input if the system is having problems locking onto the source.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Mission LX Connect wireless speaker system features built-in Bluetooth with support for wireless music streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to the speaker system. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Volume Up/Down. The system's display does not support song/artist/album information.

    • aptX: In addition to support the standard Bluetooth SBC codec, the LX Connect offers support for aptX. With aptX, you can stream "CD-quality" (16-bit/44kHz) sound from aptX compatible devices; such as newer Android smartphones and tablets. Now your wireless music can sound rich, full, and natural with less compression.
    • SSP: With SSP (Secure Simple Pairing), Bluetooth source devices can be paired with a single press of a button and without entering a PIN code. Multiple devices can be paired with the LX Connect speaker system, but only one device can can be connected and used for playback at a time.

Note: The Mission LX Connect wireless speaker system does not support Bluetooth hands-free communication for making and answering phone calls.

Roon Tested: The Mission LX Connect is certified as Roon Tested and compatible with software via the system's USB-B port when connected to a compatible Windows or Mac computer. Being  Roon Tested means that Mission and Roon have collaborated to ensure you have the best experience using Roon software and the LX Connect together, so you can just enjoy the music.

    • Roon is a feature rich music library and playback application that compiles all the music files available to your network and makes them easily available to play on Roon enabled audio devices.
