About the Brilliant Smart Home Control

Emily S.

Total smart home control

I get to try out a lot of cool gear before I write about it, which means I've ended up with a variety of smart products installed in my home. The Brilliant is the first one that brings them all together in one convenient place. This is helpful for me, the resident smart home "admin." But it's becoming essential for residents and guests who are less keen on all this technology.

Brilliant smarthome controllers

Brilliant can replace 1-, 2-, 3-, or 4-switch panels, allowing smart control of all the connected lights.

Easy access

I must admit here that my husband is one of the less keen. He did finally download the Ring app so that he can answer our doorbell remotely, but I'm pretty sure he draws the line at needing an app to turn on the lights. That's one reason I was stoked to install Brilliant.

Now everyone from my husband to my house sitter will be able to access all the smartness in my home without having to download a single app. They can use Brilliant to answer the Ring doorbell, turn on our Hue and Wemo lights, and play music on any of our Sonos speakers. Crucially, it also controls the lights wired to each switch and makes them dimmable, even when the Wi-Fi® is out.

Brilliant also works with Lifx, Lutron, and Leviton lighting products. However, the latter two brands of products can't be directly connected to Brilliant. They only work with Brilliant when connected to it via SmartThings.

Use your voice

Brilliant's built-in Amazon Alexa also means that you can control the attached lights — and the rest of your connected smart home gear — using only your voice. And, of course, it can also do all the other Alexa stuff, too, like give you a weather forecast, set a timer, or tell you the score of last night's game. Alexa replies via the built-in speaker, but you also get some on-screen feedback, too, depending on what you ask.

Don't want Alexa listening in? Turn off the mic right from the main screen.

Hear your housemates

My house isn't that big, but before I installed a second Brilliant, if my husband was upstairs and I was downstairs, I couldn't hear what he was trying to tell me unless we both stuck our heads in the stairwell. Now we can use the video intercom on each switch to speak at polite volumes instead of yelling "WHAAAT?" across the house at each other. Freaked out by the camera? No problem — you can cover it with the built-in privacy slider when you aren't using the intercom.

Brilliant single switch smarthome controller

I'm using the LCD screens on my Brilliant controls to display some of my favorite photos — including this one of my handsome cat Radar.

Set the scene

One side effect of installing Brilliant: it made me want to get more smart home gear for it to control (sorry, dear!).  I mean, I'm just a couple more lights, a thermostat, and a few smart locks away from really making good use of the “Scenes” feature. For example, I could automate bedtime with a scene that would lock the doors, turn off all the downstairs lights, and lower the temperature, all with a single tap.

In the meantime, just adding that second Brilliant control has made my house a whole lot smarter. The new 3-switch Brilliant in my bedroom controls five connected lights. Almost every night I use my downstairs Brilliant switch to turn on my reading lights upstairs so I don't have to head up in the dark.

Personalize it

I saved perhaps my favorite feature for last — it's a digital photo frame! In addition to showing you the date and time, the 5" LCD touchscreen can be personalized with up to 25 of your favorite photos. I have mine set to only turn on when motion is detected so I don't waste my lovely pet photos on an empty room. Screen brightness is also adjustable.

Can you install it yourself?

Well, I did. But I have a fair amount of experience with electrical DIY. I also have very modern wiring in my house. Load, line, ground, and neutral wires must all be present in order for you to safely install Brilliant, and the appropriate breaker must be turned off. If you aren't confident in your skills, please err on the side of caution and have it installed by a licensed electrician.

More details on the Brilliant Smart Home Control

Mark G.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Brilliant Home Control puts control of all your smart home products in one place. Installation is as easy as replacing an existing light switch (120VAC 60Hz only). When connected to your Wi-Fi network, Brilliant works with many popular smart home devices, including Ring, Sonos, Philips Hue, SmartThings, August Lock, and select Honeywell Thermostats. It also has an Alexa interface, and works with the Google Assistant. You can install multiple Brilliant controls throughout your house and control all your devices from every room. Each Brilliant device has a built-in camera and microphone that lets you place video or audio calls between rooms (if more than one control is installed). The Brilliant app for your smart phone or tablet puts controls into your hands. This Brilliant Control 2-Switch model fits into a dual gang box, and has a 5" (diagonal) LCD touch screen. Additional Brilliant Controls are available in one switch, three switch, and four switch models.

5" LCD Display: The Brilliant 2-Switch Control has a 5" diagonal LCD touch screen display (2-7/16" x 4-5/16") with 720 x 1280 resolution. You can control your devices using tap and slide touch gestures. Up to 25 photos can be uploaded from your phone to display on the screen when the switch is idle, turning the Brilliant Control into a digital picture frame.

Touch-sensitive Dimmers: Beside the LCD display are two "channels" for controlling the lights that are hardwired to the Brilliant Control. Each channel allows you to dim or brighten the connected light bulb by sliding your finger up or down. If you don't have the control programmed to dim, you can toggle the light on or off by touching the top (on) or bottom (off) of the channel. Touching the dimmer control activates the display to let you see the dimming level (0% to 100%) of each light switch.

Motion Detection: The Brilliant Control has a built-in PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor that works within a range of 8 to 15 feet. You can program the Control to wake up the display when motion is detected, and to turn off the display after you leave the room. Specific devices (lights) can be programmed to turn on or off when the motion sensor detects a presence in the room. The motion-detected action can be set for all the time, or only during certain hours of the day.

Integrated Camera/Microphone: Each Brilliant Control has a built-in camera and microphone. The camera has a field of view of 50 degrees vertical and 86 degrees horizontal, and allows you to conduct room-to-room video chats (with two or more Brillant Controls). You can also make intercom announcements to the entire house or to individual rooms. When used with Ring Video Doorbells, you can see who is at your door when the doorbell rings. The camera has a privacy shutter that can be closed whenever you want to disable the camera.

Controls: Brilliant Home Control provides control over multiple types of devices:

  • Lights: Brilliant turns your standard lights into smart lights, and intelligently controls Philips Hue and other smart lights from your wall switch through voice or touch controls. Lights hardwired to the Brilliant can be toggled on/off or dimmed (if the bulbs are dimmable). Brilliant works with single pole and 3-way and multi-way circuits.
  • Door Locks: You can lock and unlock your door from anywhere with August, Schlage, or Yale smart locks.
  • Doorbell: Connect your Ring Video Doorbell and see instantly who is at your door on the Brilliant display.
  • Music: Brilliant has built-in Sonos controls, allowing you to play your music and adjust your audio settings from the wall switch.
  • Thermostats: If your home has a Honeywell T-series or Lyric Thermostat, you can adjust the temperature and manage your home heating and AC system from any room with a Brilliant control.

Brilliant Scenes: You can combine control of all your devices into a Brilliant Scene. For example, you can create a "Good Morning" scene that turns on your lights at 100% brightness, start playing a pre-selected song on your Sonos speakers, and raise your thermostat to the daytime temperature. A "Good Night" scene might lower the lights and the temperature in your home, turn on some relaxing music, and lock all the doors. Brilliant Scenes can be accessed on the Home Screen on the display.

Brilliant Partners: Brilliant Home Control works with smart home products from many different partners:

i read your reply to a question about controlling a ceiling fan. but I am not clear as to if you can bypass dimmer mode and set it to instant on/off for motors and non dimmable lighting. I currently have wink relays & i do not like the way they have chosen to strong arm thier customers...i am trying to decidde whether i want to mess with installing some inexpensive tablets as touch pads above a couple of compatible switches or purchase a couple of your controllers, any info you can provide will be much appreciated. thank you ? - electrical contractor

Not an expert (for sure) but I would imagine that the features vary by fan. My requirement was to be able to control the fan (on/off) and did not have a need for a lighting kit. I purchased Kichler 339013TZ from Amazon. It came with some components that (it seemed to me) enabled having a single power source provided to the device but you were able through the provided remote to control both the fan and an optional lighting kit. As stated, that was not a requirement so the Brilliant is providing on/off control only. The remote does allow for me to control speed. Hope that helps!! Brilliant makes some amazing stuff!!!! Cheers!
jim  May 20, 2020
A
Yes, I currently have the Brilliant 2 switch and use in conjunction with Samsung smartthings to control all my lights switches and amazon devices (IOT) devices. The good thing about Brilliant I found is you only need one switch to control all devices. It pretty much runs completely off the tablet switch and software app but in order to get dimmer mode you will need smarthings to get all the functionality out of the Brilliant switch.

Q
will this work to replace the remote sensors for the ecobee? i would love to remove the little square sensors throughout my house with switch plates
wonka  Nov 25, 2019
1 answer
A
Based on what I read about the Ecobee, I do not expect this to work in place of the smart sensors. But this could be used as part of the voice control of the thermostat letting you use this to get the commands instead of having to keep another Alexa device around for that purpose.

Q
I have a 2-switch in my bedroom, but one operates the ceiling fan independent of the light. Will I be able to control the fan independently still with this device?
frank  Jul 15, 2019
1 answer
A
Yes, the wiring does not change with the Brilliant switch, so the fan will work as it does with the regular switch. The added benefit with Brilliant is that it is connected as a smart control, so you can control the fan from your phone, Alexa/Google Home, another Birlliant panel, on a timer or rule, etc. All of that in addition to using the slider on the Brilliant panel to switch it on and off as you do today with a regular switch.
james  Jul 16, 2019
Q
Does it have a chid lock ?
gamma  Dec 16, 2022

A
I will have to guess that you mean "child" lock, snsn. There is no child lock on the Brilliant Smart Home Control 4-switch. I hope this helps.

Q
If I want to control two banks of lights and two fans do I need the 4 switch or can I use the 2 switch?
dstanley1977  Oct 24, 2021
2 answers
A
If you want a switch per bank and each fan on a different switch then yes. However I am not sure about fan compatibility.
kyle  Oct 25, 2021
A
I would say the 4 switch if you want to control the fans and lights independently. Ensure that these switches are rated to control fans (some are not). Also, you may or may not be able to control the fan speed with the switch. Many newer fans can no longer be speed-controlled by a 'dimmer' style switch and require their remote control.

Q
Will the brilliant smart switch eliminate the need for speaker selector if I am using 1 Sonos Amp per room? If so, I can get the full benefit of the new Sonos Amp with less worries or wires!
tomtovar  May 28, 2019
2 answers
A
I use one sonos amp per room and have bose speakers wired to each amp. This set-up alone removes the need to have a speaker selector to control each room. You can then use the brilliant switch to control sonos. You can do the same with any mobile device.
mark  Aug 21, 2019
A
I'm not sure it would eliminate the need for a speaker selector - I would need to know more details about your particular setup/ wiring. You can access Sonos through the Brilliant in-wall control just like you can from the Sonos app. You can control any of your Sonos zones through a Brilliant wall plate. If you have more questions about your specific situation you can chat with one of our friendly product advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

Can i configure the brilliant smart switch as the "master" dimmer switch in a three or four way configuration and pair it with Leviton Decora smart remote switches?
tomtovar  May 28, 2019

Yes you should be able to do that Tomas. Brilliant works with single pole and 3-way and multi-way circuits. They also support Leviton smart switches so you will be able to control your existing smart lights from the Brilliant interface.

Tom - don't know the answer. I installed a 1-switch Brilliant. I also don't have any Leviton kit in my house.

Does this work with alarm dot com and the smart Zwave devices through a Zwave hub? Also it says it works with Sonos, but does it work with Alexa Amp for changing song and adjusting volume?
daniel  Dec 24, 2019
2 answers
A
Hi Danny, I have only had it installed for a week now and have not had that much time to play with it. I can say that I was able to get it to integrate with my SmartThings Zwave hub & Sonos. One tip though, If you will be replacing a smart switch with this, remove the smart switch from your Zwave Hub before you install the Brilliant. After the Brilliant is installed, you can add it back into your Zwave hub software as a "Brilliant Switch" device; then add that switch back into any automations that the old switch was in. That may be a no brainer for you but it gave me some problems for a day or so till I figured out what was up. I can not answer the Alexa questions because my with has forbid me to allow Alexa into our home. I'm still working on her with that one. Erik
erik  Jan 10, 2020
A
Alarm com-No. Z-Wave Hub-I am controlling through SmartThings, where I have most of my ZWave and ZigBee devices. SmartThings can control the Brilliant switches but Brilliant can not control Smarthings. Brilliant really wants to be the master device for devices and not the slave controller. I do not use it for Alexa or Sonos control.

I have seen conflicting information on this - can I control dumb lights that are wired to the unit with the app, and can they be programmed to turn on/off on a schedule?

Yes. I have several automations and other scenes that use both wired and "works with" components.
tim a  Nov 28, 2019
A
This can replace one dumb switch and act as the smart switch for it with the single switch unit. You can integrate the Brilliant with Smartthings and create a schedule there .
scott  Nov 27, 2019
A
Yes you can control the light that you install the device in and you can control via the Brilliant app.
david  Nov 27, 2019
A
Yes and yes! You can definitely control dumb lights that are wired to the Brilliant switch from the app. And in order to set any of those Brilliant lights to a schedule (all, some, or one), all you have to do is set up a new Scene from either the app or the Brilliant switch itself. Creating scenes will allow you to put them on a set schedule. Hope this helps!
brett j.  Nov 27, 2019
A
You can control any lights that are connected to the switch and yes you can program them to turn on and off on a schedule

Q
If you have your own speackers can you use those or do u have to have the sonus brand?
jones  Aug 21, 2019
2 answers
A
Brilliant controls the sonos speakers through software and wifi. There are no wired speaker connections. If you had a sonos amp, you could connect your own speakers to the sonos amp and then control them with Brillant.
mark  Aug 21, 2019
A
It controls the Sonos infrastructure. It doesn't power or server speakers on its own. You'd need a Sonos Connect:Amp to wire your speakers to. If you're asking about another brand of wireless speakers they won't work at all.
keith  Aug 21, 2019
Q
If I were to feed multiple 3-way "dumb" circuits into a multi-gang Brilliant controller, is it reasonable to expect that I could then control each circuit remotely without need for a hub of some sort or any additional equipment (aside from Wi-Fi of course)?

Yes. The Brilliant app allows you to control the lights remotely.

No you would still need smart lights if you wanted to be able to control them via an app. You can control any "normal" lights from the Brilliant control panel but if you wanted to control them from a phone or tablet you would need a smart light setup like the Philips Hue bridge and smart lights https://bit.ly/2KOoWKE

If you have Google home, can you change the Alexa name (on the screen) to Google Assistant? That would drive the OCD in me crazy.

Right now, Google Assistant isn't built into these controllers. I think once it is, then you will be able to change the Alexa On to something else for Google control My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Considering installing to run with my Sonance - MAG Series 6.1-Ch. Outdoor Streaming Sound System Powered by Sonos Amp. The area where I am thinking about install is a 2 Gang box that has the Outdoor Ring Flood Lights with camera and Kitchen table light. This is located next to the Patio Door. What would be my best device to install? I would be adding additional Sonos products down the line for interior use also and to sync with other ring products and Ecobee and other smart products.

If you are looking have great static control pads for you smart home, these Brilliant Smart Home Control switches are a great choice, Scott! You'll need the dual gang box 2 switch version I've linked below. This would still give you the two tangible sliders for the switch control, and add the app control touchpad. These lights will work in a 3 way control scenario and I've shot you an email with the PDF to the install manual so you can confirm these will work in your setup if you DO have 3 way operation on the switch you are replacing. These are outstanding for Ring control also, and you can add as many of these as you feel needed around your house as you expand! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_415DOUBLE/Brilliant-Smart-Home-Control-2-Switch.html?tp=65893

Q
Will this item work with 3 way switches?

Nope. Each slider replaces a standard switch/dimmer. The switch functionality feels fairly limited, to me. I had been hoping I could code each slider to a wifi light. But it doesn't seem that that works either.

Yes..the instructions will show you how to wire for a 3 way switch.

Yes. Once you have the panel wired, you go through the setup on the panel. They ask if more than one switch controls the light. You click YES and you are all set. Very easy.

Yes this will work with 3 way switches. Here are the requirements A>either have Brilliant home control on both ends of the 3 way B>have a brilliant home control on one end, and brilliant dimmer on the other end C>have a brilliant home control on one end, and a rocker panel on the other end You cannot have home control and standard dimmer as part of the 3 way scenario. You would need to use there dimmer switch which is very nice as well although sometimes seems to have a mind of its own I just installed home controls and their dimmers throughout an entire home and really love it. Feel free to ask any questions Thanks Frankie
