Our take on the Meze Audio 12 Classics

So here I am, the Crutchfield headphone guy —listening to and writing about some of the coolest headphones on the planet — while my wife has just been using the cheap earbuds that came with her phone. I recently got her a sample pair of the Meze Audio 12 Classic in-ear headphones.

Meze Audio 12 Classics

The Meze Audio 12 Classics offer a solid sonic upgrade to your phone's earbuds.

(WAY) better than the average earbud

So here I am, the Crutchfield headphone guy —listening to and writing about some of the coolest headphones on the planet — while my wife has just been using the cheap earbuds that came with her phone. I recently got her a sample pair of the Meze Audio 12 Classic in-ear headphones.

After dealing with those flimsy, uncomfortable headphones for so long, my wife Meghan told me that it was "really eye-opening" when she stepped up to these substantial, well-built in-ears.

Rock-solid construction and refined sound

All of the 12 Classics' internal parts are made from premium materials: titanium-coated mylar diaphragms, copper and aluminum voice coils. And the tiny, tough earbud housings are actually made from real walnut. Company founder Antonio Meze's goal is to give the customer maximum value for the price.

He does so through disciplined engineering, and delivering organic, detailed sound. I should mention here that Meghan spends more time with her Spotify playlists using headphones now that she's using the 12 Classics. She told me everything sounds clear, and she hears musical nuances she's not used to hearing with her stock earbuds.

A proper fit for good sound

Fit is important for all headphones, but even more so for in-ear headphones. Getting a proper seal can actually improve the sound. Meze Audio includes 5 pairs of ear tips to ensure a secure, comfortable fit.

My favorite ear tips are the Comply™ foam tips, and there's a pair included here. I like how they expand and conform to my ears to help block out noise. My wife preferred the small-size silicone tips — she says they felt soft and stayed put.

Very good sound reproduction but unshielded, noisy cables

Jeff from Kensington, MD on 10/24/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good sound reproduction. However, the cables are not shielded. When walking, you hear every contact between the cord and your clothing, body etc. I will be returning these for ear buds with shielded cables.

Pros: Very good sound reproduction from these earbuds.

Cons: Unfortunately, the cables are not shielded and every movement of the cord (when walking, for example) comes though the ear buds sound and clear.

The headphones include 4 pairs of silicone ear tips, and a pair of Comply foam ear tips, for a good fit. The headphones and ear tips can be stored in the included clamshell-style zippered case.

Drivers: The 12 Classics headphones are equipped with 8mm titanium-coated Mylar drivers with a copper-clad aluminum voice coil. The drivers are housed in a precision-crafted aluminum ear bud, that features a laser-etched Meze Audio logo on the outside. The housing is wrapped in beautiful walnut wood.

Ear Tips: The 12 Classics in-ear headphones come with three pairs of conical-shaped silicone ear tips (S, M, L), a pair of medium dual-flanged ear tips, plus a pair of Comply premium foam ear tips (medium).
