Top-notch headphones with real value
When Antonio Meze handed me a pair of the Meze Audio 99 Neo headphones, I was surprised at how much they looked and felt like his company's premium 99 Classics headphones. We were at the CanJam NYC headphone show so I saw both models side by side. The big difference is the earcups: these headphones feature heavy-duty plastic 'cups, while the 99 Classics sport real wooden ones.
Other than that? Meze Audio was able to preserve much of what makes those well-respected headphones so special. Oh yeah, and at an even more affordable price.
Well-built and durable
Meze has an engineering background, so all of his products are designed and made with a high-level of craftmenship and attention to detail. And these 99 Neo headphones are no different. The smooth earcups, metal headband, and strong frame are held together by heavy-duty hardware. Meze avoids using glue, because he feels all parts should be easily replaceable — even though they are built to last.
Do they sound different than the 99 Classics?
The differences between the Meze Audio's two over-ear models are not completely cosmetic. Sure, the drivers used here are the same found in the 99 Classics, tuned for clear, exciting sound with deep bass. But these headphones are slightly more efficient, so they can be driven more easily by your phone or laptop.
I also found that the 99 Classics' walnut earcups lend them a slightly more natural tonal quality. But vocals definitely nicely with the Neos. And the bass extension is still very strong — it just may not feel quite as organic. Overall, these 'phones have a fun, energetic sound profile that works well across all musical styles.
Lightweight and fuss-free fit
These headphones felt surprisingly lightweight in my hand. The heavy-duty steel headband uses a spring suspension system that seems to "pop" into place, without a lot of moving around or adjusting. For me, it was one and done. And the super-soft, split-leather ear pads surrounded my ear with the right combo of firmness and give.

Overview: The Meze Audio 99 Neo over-ear headphones feature the same clean, natural sonic signature as the 99 Classics, but with a more contemporary styling. The wood ear cups have been replaced with sleek, textured coal-black ABS ear cups. The 99 Neo still carries the same metal hardware, soft memory foam ear pads, and strong manganese spring steel headband as the Classics. Many of the components of the 99 Neo are replaceable, if needed. The 99 Neo comes with a 59" cable with an in-line remote and microphone for music playback and phone calls, plus a 1/4" adapter, and a hard, zippered black vinyl storage case.
Replaceable Components: The 99 Neo is manufactured with components that are well-made, but replaceable if needed. The headphones are assembled using quality cast zinc alloy hardware with an electroplated coating. The stamped manganese spring steel frame and soft, self-adjusting headband deliver even pressure for a comfortable fit for any user. The ear pads are made with medium density memory foam, covered with soft, comfortable PU leather for excellent sound isolation.
Drivers: The 99 Neo headphones feature dynamic 40mm neodymium and Mylar transducers that deliver crisp, clear audio with minimal distortion.
Cables: The included 59" OFC (oxygen-free copper) cables are included with the 99 Neo. The cable features a Kevlar fabric sheath to prevent tangles and reduce contact noise, and gold-plated 3.5mm terminals at each end (including dual-sided plugs on the headphone side). The headphones are symmetrical, so there is no designated left or right ear cup. The left and right channel markings on the cable terminals determine the left-right orientation of the headphones. The left channel plug has a tactile dot to enable you to identify the channels without looking. The cable is equipped with an Android and Apple-compatible in-line remote and microphone for controlling music playback and phone calls. It does not have a volume control. In addition, a snap-on 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter is included for use with your home components and pro audio gear. The 99 Neo also includes a soft, zippered pouch for storing your cable and adapter.

Meze Audio 99 Neo Sound quality is crystal clear with highs and mids. I can listen for several hours I only use it with my receiver I don't take it around town.
