Looks and Sounds like a friend for life

I am reminded of advice I got from John Bowers (of B&W Speaker fame): "Be weary of the "Wow" factor. Let yourself be seduced slowly by a new piece of equipment. You get a truer sense of its nature". He never spoke a truer word. It took a while for these headphones to start shining, but when they did, he sun came out! The best thing you can say of any piece of equipment is that you forget about it and that it lets you hear the music - all of it. And this the Empyrean does, with the help of my Auralic Aries G2 and Chord Hugo TT2. I went all the way back to discs I have owned for almost 60 years (Brahms 1st Piano Concerto with Curzon and Szell with stunning piano sound and great horn presence; or Jessye Norman in Mahler, Lars Vogt in Beethoven's 2nd Concerto; Philippe Jaroussky in Vivaldi. There is no sense of fatigue even after 4-5 hours of intense listening. The detail and depth is just wonderful. One feels part of the concert. I hear details in recordings I have own for many years and they surprise me anew.

Pros: Immersive sound that does not get fatiguing. Very comfortable for long listening sessions. Can't wait to get home.

Cons: Now I have to listen to my entire collection all over again! I agree, the cable is too stiff, but I am ordering a longer upgrade cable so not really an issue

Found My New Headphones

"Smooth" is a word you hear in reviews of the Empyreans. I agree. You would expect a $3000 headset to sound amazing with any modern digital recording. These do. But what about those less-than-audiophile analog recordings from my era, the 1960's / 1970's? The answer.... also amazing! Depth & detail hidden in the recordings is revealed, without harshness or fatigue. I find that the leather ear pads slightly nudge the bass, but make the sound signature a bit dark. The 'Alcatara' pads open everything up beautifully. Sound is subjective of course, so it's nice to have a choice. These are headphones engineered for the pure enjoyment of music. Added bonus: I saved $400 with "open box". Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Comfort, Quality....just about everything, actually.

Cons: Hard to stop listening. Chores and appointments might get missed.

Work of Art

First off, the build is fantastic! From the moment you receive them everything is top tier quality. Built to last, the Empyrean could be a headphone anyone could hand down to their children, a family heirloom, long lasting, easy to replace parts, incredible earpads ( that are easy to swap ) build. They are a little fancy and nice to look at but these go on your ears, so unless you listen to music while looking at yourself in a mirror that won't mean very much, haha. The best part is they sound as good as they look! A wide open soundstage and incredible imaging, breathing new life into old albums you love with ease, with the low power needed to make these babies do what they do best, play music! They can be used from a simple phone to a nice stack DAC/AMP combo. I would suggest to get an amp for them to open them up and get the full bang out of them. Audioquest Dragonfly Red, or a Ifi Hip Dac will do the job well. Empyreans can play all genres effortlessly. Personally, switching out the earpads will really change the sound adding a little more bass or a little more airiness and clarity. These headphones are more than a headphone they are a work of art that you can put on your head and jam your favorite albums. Not much gets better than that! The only con is how open they are. When you put them on your head the design is great so they are not heavy but being open back they let in/out a lot of sound. A dedicated listening room or a quiet place with volume up a bit is the best.

Pros: Build, Soundstage, Tight and accurate, Low power needed, Comfortable for long sessions, You get a what you pay for.

Cons: Very very open headphones let in/out a lot of sound.

A headphone for every track

Build quality - the headphone. That pretty much sums it up. The hardware and finish on the Empyrean lives up to the price tag. You can tell Meze put some serious development time into it as well, from the way the pads conform to the shape of the ear to the way the headband holds them in place once positioned. Attention to detail is evident. As for the sound....Do they sound like a $3000 headphone? They're good, they're the kind of good that can be hard to put a finger on in my opinion. A shade dark, a shade warm, but if I had to put my hand to a headphone that was going to sound good no matter what genre I was going to be listening to it would be the Empyrean.

Meze Audio Empyrean

The most comfortable headphone I have ever worn and the construction is solid and high quality. The sound-stage is not super wide but is deep with a clear 3D feel. The sound is very refined and a little on the warm side. So far the Chord DAVE DAC is the best match. My only criticism of the headphone is that the stock cable is stiff and unyielding.

Pros: Refined, enjoyable sound that is not tiring during long listening sessions. Very comfortable fit.

Cons: Cable is very resistant to bending in one plane while moderately flexible in the other.

Meze Audio Empyrean

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Great sound quality, though tends to be a tad darker sounding. Easy to listen on medium volume for up to 3 hours. Very good instrument separation, and good spacial feel. I wouldn't call this a very analytical headphone, but one for simply enjoying music. It's also a hoot when watching movies!

Pros: Comfortable, non-fatiguing, very good bass, instrument separation good.

Cons: A bit too dark, you may need to play with your EQ, depending on your musical tastes.

A wonderful set but only fully realized with good components. I was using the jack on my Cambridge Edge A Integrated. Some songs were stunning but others, meh. When I upgraded to a dedicated headphone DAC/Amp (Hugo TT2) ...oh my goodness

My New Daily Driver for Anything

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've tried everything from the Audeze LCD-4z to the Sennheiser HD800s and still the Empyreans truly impressed me. While the HD800 has better distance to the soundstage and the LCD-4Z has better bass oomph. The Empyreans carve their own niche in that they do EVERYTHING well and enjoyably. They are not harsh or analytical. They're the flagship you can hand to anyone and they'll be truly impressed, audiophiles or not. The quality of the headset is sublime and you can tell it is a product that will last for ages even with regular use. The sound quality is great for any track from a symphony to a garage rap track and anything in-between. I can easily say I will probably be using these every single day despite having dozens of high-end choices in my repertoire and that should say all you need to know. Despite being newer to the headphone game, Meze has proven themselves able to go toe-to-toe with headsets widely considered to be the best of the best.

Pros: Exceptional Sound quality Very comfortable to use for long sessions Superb build quality Changeable ear pads offer two different styled sound signatures right out of the box Excellent Carrying case

Cons: Expensive (but worth the price more than others in its range) Not the most powerful bass response Significant others might miss you for hours or days at a time after you buy this

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have the headphones for about 2 weeks and I like them very much, very good product for all kinds of music.the piano and other instruments sound natural. They are a little more relaxed then Focals with very good base which affects the whole spectrum of music. The treble is a little more recessed not in your face and not bright at all. This is very good product. Enjoy your music.

Worthy Flagship

A nice alternative to the other TOTL headphones out. Many like the Abyss, Utopia,LCD4 can be a little hot in the treble. The Meze have gobs of detail, but the treble is a little lower in volume. Not rolled off, just a little pulled back. I have all of the above mentioned headphones, and I am happily adding the Empyrean to my collection. Nice all rounder with slightly enhanced bass and a sound stage that just seems right. But of all the afore mentioned headphones, I like the vocals on the Empyrean. It is their greatest quality in my opinion. Male and female vocals just sound natural.

Pros: Sound stage, bass, vocals

Cons: Some loss of sparkle, but if you are sensitive to highs or listen to most modern music, this may not be a negative.
