About the Apple AirPods® (3rd Generation)
The AirPods 3 deliver a pro-level performance
The AirPods 3 deliver a pro-level performance
The sweat-proof Apple AirPods 3 sport sport a compact design, but are loaded with convenient features.
Apple's third-generation AirPods sport a streamlined design that's similar to their premium AirPods Pro. And that's not all the two models share in common. In fact, if you don't need active noise cancellation, these AirPods offer many of the Pro's strongest features. First and foremost is how brilliantly they work with your iPhone® — and all your other Apple gear.
These AirPods don't come with ear tips, and fit like more like the original AirPods. But they are sweat-proof and they run on the same renowned H1 wireless chip as the Pro version. I've spoken to engineers at other companies, and they tell me this chip is a major achievement.
Steady, high-quality connection to your Apple gear
While the AirPods will play music wirelessly from any Bluetooth-enabled phone or music source, the H1 chip makes pairing up with Apple devices even more special. A one-tap connection syncs up the earbuds to your iPhone®, and then you're automatically paired to other devices on your iCloud® account (like your Apple Watch®, iMac®, or iPad®).
Personalized sound powered by Apple's H1 wireless chip
Since these AirPods don't have ear tips, it is harder to create a noise-isolating seal. That lets more external sounds in, which can be helpful for staying aware busy areas. But I always warn that it will hurt audio performance. That's why Apple tweaked their Adaptive EQ for these AirPods — to account for the sound leaking in.
Their special processing can sense how the AirPods fit in your ear, and make adjustments to the midrange and bass accordingly. The H1 chip features ten audio cores that can further control and customize the sound. A special amplifier drives a high-excursion driver to deliver the goods with clarity and low distortion.
3D movie sound for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV
These headphones also use head-tracking technology to serve up "spatial audio" for certain shows, movies, and music. It's designed to emulate the sound of a Dolby Atmos home theater speaker setup in a room. And as you nod or turn your head, the sound field stays fixed and centered.
That makes for an immersive TV watching experience on an iPad, iPhone, or a big screen connected to Apple TV 4K. And it also adds an extra dimension to your tunes when listening to Dolby Atmos Music tracks. The Apple Music streaming service has thousands of songs mixed Atmos, and the Atmos version plays automatically when you're wearing AirPods.
The H1 wireless chip allows easy, one-tap pairing between the Apple AirPods and your iPhone.
Clear phone calls and FaceTime conversations
AirPods have become an everyday essential for some, often as much for phone calls or FaceTime as music listening. They make it so easy to hop on conference calls, order food, or talk when you're out and about. A super-powerful, voice-detecting microphone can filter out external sounds for clear calls and FaceTime conversations in noisier environments.
Smarter, hands-free Siri® voice control
Siri voice commands are easy, too. Instead of having to double-tap the AirPods to activate Siri, you can just say "Hey Siri" and follow it up with a command or request. After a one-time setup through a connected device (like your iPhone), Siri will recognize your voice command.
A carrying case that's compatible with Qi wireless charging systems
These AirPods offer six hours of music listening on a full charge, or four hours of talk time. That's the longest battery life of any of the earbud-style AirPods. When you need to refuel, just click the AirPods into their included wireless charging case.
It can bank 24 hours of power to recharge your AirPods. And just 5 minutes of charging gives your AirPods an hour of wireless music listening. The case can be placed on a compatible Qi charger (not included) to refresh the charge wirelessly.

Overview: The Apple AirPods (3rd Generation) are individual in-ear buds designed to work with your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, as well as Android phones and tablets, and most other Bluetooth-enabled devices. The true-wireless AirPods power on and connect automatically with your device when you open the lid of the included wireless charging case. AirPods use internal sensors and motion accelerometers to detect when they're in your ears, or when you tap them to control playback, answer a call, or activate Siri. The AirPods (3rd Generation) come with a Lightning-to-USB-C cable, and a new MagSafe Wireless Charging Case, which is compatible with MagSafe charging devices and Qi Wireless Charging. The AirPods (3rd Generation) are 1.21" in height, 0.72" wide, and 0.76" deep, and weight 0.15 ounces each.
Compatibility: The AirPods (3rd Generation) are compatible with iPhone and iPod touch (with the latest version of iOS), iPad (with the latest version of iPadOS), Apple Watch (with the latest version of watchOS), Mac (with the latest version of macOS), and Apple TV (with the latest version of tvOS).
Power Requirements: Each individual Apple AirPod has a built-in rechargeable battery. The batteries are charged whenever you place them inside of the MagSafe Charging Case, which contains its own 345mAh rechargeable battery. These 3rd Generation AirPods are equipped with Apple's new H1 headphone chip, which makes them more stable and efficient than the original model (with the W1 chip). The AirPods (3rd Generation) provide up to 6 hours of listening (up to 5 hours with spatial audio enabled) and up to 4 hours of talk time on a single charge. A 5-minute Quick Charge gives you up to 1 hours of listening time or talk time. When the battery in the MagSafe Charging Case is charged to capacity, you can recharge the AirPods multiple times. With the AirPods (3rd Generation) and the Charging Case, you get more than 30 hours of listening time, or up to 20 hours of talk time. You can check the charge status of your AirPods and MagSafe Charging Case with a compatible Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac). A Lightning-to-USB-C cable is provided for charging the MagSafe Charging Case.
MagSafe Wireless Charging Case: The included MagSafe Charging Case is compatible with Apple MagSafe charging devices. MagSafe charging devices feature special magnets that optimally center the device on the charging pad, and hold the charging case secure to the charger. The Charging Case is also compatible with Qi Wireless Charging. Charging the AirPods is as simple as placing them in the case. The LED indicator on the front of the case lets you know the AirPods are charging. If no MagSafe or Qi-compatible wireless charging pad is available, you can plug in the case with the supplied Apple Lightning-to-USB-C cable. The AirPods and MagSafe Charging Case will stop charging when the battery reaches 100%, and will trickle-charge to keep the devices at 100%. The dimensions of the MagSafe Wireless Charging Case are: W-2.14", H-1.83", D-0.84"; Weight 1.34 ounces.
IPX4: The AirPods (3rd Generation) are sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise. They have a rating of IPX4 (IEC standard 60529) which means they are safe to wear while working out. The sweat and water resistance may decrease over time with normal wear. You should never try to charge wet AirPods. The MagSafe Charging case is not sweat or water resistant.
Apple H1 Headphone Chip: The H1 headphone chip inside the Apple AirPods (3rd Generation) is also found in its predecessor (AirPods 2nd Generation). With the H1 chip, you can activate the Siri personal assistant with your voice ("Hey Siri") to make a phone call, play music, get directions, raise and lower the volume, and perform many other functions. The H1 chip supports Bluetooth 5.0, which should provide excellent wireless range. It also provides a stable wireless connection to your devices, connecting quickly to your phone calls, and switching between active devices. The H1 chip also provides excellent Latency performance with fewer delays between on-screen events and the accompanying audio, which is important for gaming and watching videos.
Microphones: The AirPods have built-in dual beam-forming microphones that focus on your voice, while rejecting ambient noise, making your phone calls crisp and clear.
Adaptive EQ: The inward facing microphones hear what you're hearing. The Adaptive EQ automatically adjusts the low and midrange frequencies, so you're hearing the most detail in your music.
Spatial Audio: When watching a supported show or movie, or listen to supported music on iPhone or iPad, you can enjoy Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking to create a unique immersive, theater-like experience. Spatial Audio surrounds you with sound that makes you feel like you're inside the scene or watching live on-stage. Built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers dynamically track the movement of your head to anchor the sound to your device. You can control Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking for each supported app in the Control Center of your iPhone or iPad. These features require iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1, or later.
Sensors and Accelerometers: The 3rd-generation AirPods feature built-in optical sensors and motion accelerometers that can automate numerous functions. When the AirPods are pulled out of their Charging Case, they instantly turn on and connect to your iOS device or compatible Bluetooth device. As soon as you put them in your ears, your music starts playing. Take one or both AirPods out and the built-in skin-detect sensors automatically pause the music you're listening to. Tapping gestures help you change tracks, or change the volume. Double-tapping lets you activate Siri if you haven't enabled the "Hey Siri" hands-free function. The AirPods feature a separate voice accelerometer that can detect when you're talking on the phone or to Siri, and will engage the microphone and reject background noise so your call is crystal clear.
Environmental Impact: AirPods (3rd Generation) are designed and manufactured with numerous features to reduce their environmental impact. They are made with 100% recycled rare earth elements in all their magnets, 100% recycled aluminum in the charging case hinge, and 100% recycled tin in the solder on the charging case's main logic board. In addition, the packaging is made of 100% virgin wood fiber from responsibly managed forests, and 90% or more of their total packaging is fiber-based.
