Alpine CDE-164BT

The clean layout of the CDE-163BT makes it easy to use when you're driving.

Sound quality

If your audio plans include amplifiers and high-end component speakers, the three sets of 4-volt crossovers can be set to 3-way mode, so you can amplify the lows, mids, and highs separately — the ultimate SQ setup. And, speaking of sound quality, this receiver will play your FLAC files via USB, so you can enjoy a better listening experience in your car.

Bluetooth® that's better

With the CDE-163BT and your paired smartphone, you can talk hands-free to the receiver, letting you keep your eyes on the road while you interact with your phone. If you've been less than thrilled with the sound of streaming audio in the past, Alpine's exclusive processing improves the sound of streaming music or stored music files sent from your device to the receiver.

More goodness to enjoy

If you're looking to add some punch to your tunes, press the Bass Engine SQ button for easy access to the receiver's extensive low-frequency controls, including bass profiles that you can customize through the TuneIt app. If you're active on Facebook, this receiver will read the latest posts to you while you concentrate on the road. And if you're tired of the same old programming on your local radio stations, you can add an optional SiriusXM satellite radio tuner to enjoy an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk programming.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

This is a nice unit, but the display is very dim and hard to read in bright sunlight even at its highest intensity. In addition my unit had at the very least a defective microphone. Even with a different microphone the support pertain said that it was "very quite". Crutchfield service was of course great, and an exchange was no problem. Also note that one of the wiring diagrams is incorrect with respect to the speaker wire colors and there is a small yellow note in the PDF that Crutchfield will send you.

Pros: High feature level hard to find in a single DIN CD these days. Crutchfield service

Cons: Dim display Defective unit in my case.

I'm a professional audio director. My day job is taking care of audio and other tech needs for a church. Outside of that, I do pro audio consulting, setting up and tuning audio systems, record bands in studios, etc. I chose this receiver because of the 9 band parametric EQ and time alignment ability. The receiver functions well. It sounds great, bluetooth is fantastic, etc. My biggest complaint is mostly my Civic's fault, there is a huge glare on the screen. During the day time, I have to cover the receiver with my hand to see the display and buttons. At night, it works very well. As far as the audio tuning functions, they are ok, but not what I was hoping. Each of the 9 bands are limited to specific ranges. They can only be set to certain frequencies. For instance, the lowest band can only be set to 40, 50, or 63 Hz. If you want to make a notch at 45Hz, you're out of luck. Also, the Q is very narrow. You can only choose 3, 4, or 5, you can't do wide 1 or 0.7 boosts or cuts. Also, you can only do one EQ for all speakers. You can't tune the rear speakers to match the front, which hurts very much in my Civic Coupe. Instead of doing one wide 200-500Hz cut to make the rear speakers match, I have to use 2-3 of the narrow filters, and it cuts the front also. The time correction is chopped up like this also, but it is still very useful. If you're an audio engineer or audiophile wanting to do detailed tuning, this won't quite give you what you want.

Pros: Everything works, and has somewhat useable parametric EQ and time correction features.

Cons: Parametric EQ bands are too narrow to get a natural sounding EQ when tuning to your vehicle. It's still better than the average 3 band in cheap radios though.

First new head unit from Alpine in two decades, and wow things have changed. My last unit was a CDM-7871,it has out lasted 5 cars. The CDE-163BT was a little bit frustrating at first, but then I got the app. from Alpine and it allows easy access to all your settings. and the sound is amazing. Now let's see if it will last for two decades. BTW the old unit still works.

    Pros: It's an Alpine!

Cons: A little bit of a learning curve.

Buying from Cruchfield is the way to go. The prewired harness was great. Could have been better instructions as to what plugs into what. I called Customer Service and they walked me right thru the process in about two minutes. The Alpine unit I bought is really nice and has a great sound. Takes me back to my my old high school rock and roll days. I am the "jamminist" 70 year old in town now. Great overall experience!!!!!

Pros: 1. Great products 2. Excellent customer service 3. Excellent install instructions

Cons: 1. Prewired harness hook-up instructions were a little slack.

    2008 Nissan Frontier

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Maybe mine's a lemon, but I'm here to say this product sucks. I bought this to install in my 2008 Nissan Frontier that's too old for modern Bluetooth and I thought it'd be cool to have something that I didn't have to manually address each time via auxiliary jacks, etc. Unlike many reviewers here, I'm not great at installation, so I paid to have it done professionally. Everything was fine at first. I listen to streaming radio via apps from an iPhone a lot. On about the 3rd or 4th day of this thing, listening to a streaming radio show, the unit went quiet and displayed "paused" on its screen. Sometimes apps do that, so I went to hit play again but no sound. Long story short, the unit ran iTunes and suddenly NO OTHER AUDIO would work unless iTunes ran concurrently. Insane! So, to listen to a podcast or something, I had to listen to both it and iTunes music at the same time. It's ridiculous. Crutchfield reps were kind, but all they had to offer was an Alpine software upgrade that did nothing but erase all the settings I spent hours working on and a suggestion that I keep trying other phones to see if they work. None did. Meanwhile, my phone works on any and all other Bluetooth devices I have, including another car. I always thought Alpine was good, but no longer. This thing is crap, totally useless, and is costing me in time and dough. It also gives off an awfully loud hiss in any mode. The radio volume has a huge gap b/t 2 and 3, either too low or too loud.

    Pros: Lighting looks cool

Cons: Fails to work Bluetooth properly Has an very loud hiss Radio volume goes too low to too high between levels 2 and 3 Can't play audio w/o running iTunes simultaneously. Pointless.

Good for the cost. Fairly simple to install with all the right equipment, that they suggest. But do not be fooled by the Sirius XM. This radio is Sirus XM ready, but does not have it installed. You must purchase additional equipment for that. Or just research a different radio that can use the existing car antenna. Other than that it will do just fine, since my son just likes the bluetooth.

This replaced my ancient Alpine TDM-7544 cassette deck with the CD changer add-on. I installed those in my '99 Toyota 4Runner when my car was new. That Alpine lasted for a long time but started giving me trouble so it was finally time for an upgrade. While I miss the CD changer option and the larger radio preset buttons, the addition of FLAC support via USB and the Aux port which I use with my AudioQuest Dragonfly USB DAC > Android phone is really great. I wanted HD radio as well, but Alpine's only current head unit with HD radio has the USB and Aux ports on the back. I was not about to run cables into my glove box or drill holes anywhere...I don't get why so many head units have these ports on the back :(. I can't comment on the internal amps as I use external amps for my MB Quart speakers and JL Audio subwoofer, but as a preamp, this unit sounds very good! Crutchfield is the best in the business too and they will help you with any questions you may have. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Sound Quality Tuner Reception FLAC support CD Player USB Front Port Aux Front Port 6-channel pre-outs Ability to change colors

Cons: I knew these things going in, but I will still list them as cons: No HD radio No 24-bit/96kHz FLAC support via USB input (though the 24-bit/48kHz support is still nice)

I bought this to replace my three year old Alpine CDE-HD149BT. This is more awesome than I ever imagined! I bought it because there was something wrong with my old head unit - it sounded muddy and lacking treble. But, I really wanted this one for the FLAC anyway. I have over 2400 songs in FLAC on a 64Gb memory stick. Now, I can play my entire CD collection from the memory stick. No more CD's!! And because FLAC is lossless, there is no difference in sound compared to CD. The other thing that I totally love is the ability to put a time delay on each speaker. That really puts the sound in the center. I am SO impressed with Alpine!!! I just wish I would have realized my old head unit was defective before now.

Pros: USB on front FLAC Superb sound Time Delay for each speaker

Overall this deck is great on my stock 98 Camry system. The 24 bit DAC makes a huge difference when streaming songs from Apple Music. Install on this deck was quick and bluetooth syncing was also easy. Even on my stock Toyota speakers this DAC brings out the extra things you hear on a Bjork or jazz song.

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Ordered a radio for my 2002 Acura MDX with no Bose system, and just stock, I have to say, this unit deserves the price tag. Initially I went with the JVC-KD980BT, but that had a problem with one setting, so I had to return it for a Sony MEX-N5200BT, just to keep an open mind. That turned out to be a big disappointment as the sound was a bit buried and muddy. The Sony only had an equalizer and their "Extra Bass". I had a Pioneer once, but the Pioneers even the new ones have a 12Khz high frequency equalizer which is harsh in the ear. But enough of those units. I got fed up with trying and returning the other brand radios as I was looking for a good deep bass with clear vocals. This Alpine CDE-163BT blew me away with the clarity of the mids, the transparency of the highs and echos, the deep, car-shaking bass of the lows even in the absence of a subwoofer. It's almost like I have a 12-inch sub in the rear seats with the MX Expander feature. The 9-band parametric equalizer starts from 20 Hz and extends up to 20 Khz!! I seldom come across equalizers with that range and with a +-14db cut and boost. Other radios can only to +-9db, which isn't much. With a parametric equalizer, the sound can be customized for the resonant bass frequency of the car which amplifies the bass even more. The other amazing areas of this radio are the clarity of the Satellite radio, FM Tuner, and BT audio. It's Hi Fidelity in every source and makes the trip better. This Alpine did not disappoint.

awesome radio. I can read the numbers on the display which i cannot do on my 2012 toyota 4runner. I am thinking of getting a new radio for the toyota too since the alpine is such a nice radio.

Pros: nice large display, many features that i still have not had the time to learn to use

I purchased this unit when my previous unit died (Alpine CDA-117 w/ KCE-400bt). The swap was virtually effortless. The pin-out for the CDA-117 connector was identical to the the CDE-163BT, so I just removed the old and installed the new. The only part of the swap that was mildly like 'work' was replacing the mic. The sound from the 163BT is definitely more rich than my previous unit. And the Pandora feature is great. Just remember to change the 'Alpine App' setting to BT (for Bluetooth) unless you prefer plugging your phone into the USB port to stream from Pandora.

Pros: - Easy swap with previous Alpine unit - Great sound quality - Built-in BT and Pandora is a winning combo

Cons: - It didn't come with free beer :)

I bought this product about a week and a half ago. Had no trouble installing it. Very straightforward install. After getting the hang of the way the software was, as I come from using a couple year old pioneer, I really enjoyed using it. The sound is great and I love the way to adjust the bass for my sub. I also like having the CD player for when I need it. Overall a fantastic product. Definitely worth the money.

Great head unit. I originally planned to buy the Alpine CDE-164BT but discovered that the CDE-163BT has the exact same specs and was $50 less expensive. Replaced original Becker head unit in my '99 Mercedes E-Class with the factory Bose option. Vastly improved sound quality, FM and AM reception. Bluetooth works very well with my Samsung Galaxy S5. Installation was very easy: just soldered 5 color-matching wires to the supplied harness and plugged it in and routed the microphone. Setup was also very easy once I understood how it worked though there are a huge number of options. Even matched the display and key color to my cars dash. My only criticism is that the button layout is not optimal and important buttons for scanning and turning the unit off are small and not easy to find while driving.

Pros: Sensitive Tuner, Excellent Bluetooth, Display and Key color control.

    Cons: Button Layout

Very happy with this head unit! I was replacing an older Alpine unit that was about 14 years old. That unit was a higher end unit, but I have to say the CDE-163BT is better in every way. Not only does it have the features that weren't available 14 years ago, like Bluetooth and Pandora streaming but the sound quality is much better. I have the internal amp turned off as I use an outboard amp for my speakers and sub, so I can't really comment about the quality of the internal one. My Galaxy 7 Android phone paired up easily and connects every time I get in the truck with it. No problem with streaming from Google Play. I also like the fact that my EQ settings are saved per input, so when I switch from the BT streaming to, CD, or to MP3 from the USB drive the EQ switches as well. This is key since the sound quality varies a lot between these different technologies. The Crutchfield advisor that helped me with this purchase was also extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Pros: Great sound quality Saved EQ settings per input Bluetooth flawless with Android 7

Cons: Searching through MP3s on USB drive a little tedious Busy interface with some small buttons

Great upgrade from factory. Was looking for a head unit with Subwoofer preamp and bluetooth capability and this little guy has both! Also got the Alpine powerpack mini amp that they make for this unit. I would certainly recommend the powerpack as well; it raises power to the speakers to 45 RMS (more than enough imo; only 18 RMS from head unit alone). Also maintained SWC (Steering Wheel Control) with Crutchfield recommended adapter. Few complaints: - Bluetooth is a little finicky. Won't properly reconnect after turning off / on vehicle. Example: Turn on car, select BT from audio source on head unit, select ALPINE on my phone, play music!; Turn car off, leave phone's BT on, Turn car on, head unit still set on BT, DOES connect, DOES NOT play audio... Must repeat original process everytime I want to use BT to listen to audio... Not a deal breaker tho. - User interface is a little more cumbersome than other stereos I've had. Not a deal breaker. - Send Me Stickers! I now have an Alpine Head Unit, Alpine KTP-445A Power Pack (4ch speaker amp), Alpine MRP-M500 mono Amp, and Alpine Type-R 12" (sealed box, don't port that unless you like wasting money)... I want ALPINE stickers!!! (Bought 1 pair of Focal Speakers and they sent me a sticker...)

Pros: Expandability (Add that powerpack!) Advanced EQ settings 2-way (speakers, tweeters) or 3-way (speakers, tweeters, sub) Modes with HP/LP filter settings

Cons: Reconnecting BT (not sure if my phone or unit) Adjusting EQ settings on the fly is a little tough

This model has to be one of the best out there in it's price range. Everything works as it is supposed to. Easy to set up. Easy to use. The included user manual is clear and to the point. The sound quality is superb. ( I am a long-time studio musician and am pretty demanding . ) The radio tuner works very well and the scan for stations function is the easiest and best I have ever used. The hands free calling works very well with my smart phone and the included Mic is very good quality and I come through loud and clear. I downloaded the free Tune-it App from the Google Play store to use with it and the added features are useful and worth having. This is a well thought out and executed design that is of the highest quality build by a USA company that has been respected and around for a long time. Crutchfield is tops in customer service and included the wiring harness kit for my specific vehicle at no extra cost and free shipping. Being able to trust the company you buy something from if their are any issues is a big part of my buying decision process and Crutchfield is A+. I would highly recommend this Alpine unit and this company.

I was skeptical about replacing my head unit in my vehicle because it has the upgraded BOSE sound system. I was worried the sound quality would be diminish greatly from removing the factory head unit because, I know they pair everything up to work with such low power and all that jazz. I gave it a whirl anyways. I was not disappointed. The factory BOSE speakers sound even better than ever. Although, I've had this hunch due to sound quality of the front dash speakers-that they might be blown, turns out they are so I'll need to replace thoughs. But I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Everything works as it should. The Bluetooth for hands free calling is flawless. The longest part of my install was making all my connections on the wiring devices. The PAC brand wiring harness I got works flawless with retaining my steering wheel controls also. Overall very pleased.

Pros: All the features work as they should. MASSIVE upgrade in features and sound quality over the factory HU.

    Cons: ZERO.

I was in the market to up grade my factory stereo. After researching many stereo brands Alpine seemed to fit my standards the best. This stereo is the perfect stereo for a person who listens to different generes of music and needs to be adjusting frequencies from song to song. This stereo also has a lot of power and picked up my Memphis amp and sub with out any problem. The stereo has so much power that now I'm in the market to replace all my factory speakers. All in all this stereo is awesome. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it has a complicated interface to use.

Pros: Awesome power and really easy to install.

Cons: Interface is complicated to learn.

I researched many different stereo and this is the one that I chose. My factory stereo no longer played CD's so it was time for an up grade. When I received my first stereo it didn't perform as expected. I was not getting any bass or low frequency response. Very disappointed to purchase a great name with issues. Crutchfield assisted me in troubleshooting the issue but nothing worked. Crutchfield sent me a replacement stereo and the new one works great. I also purchased the alpine 445 power pack which plugs right into the alpine stereo. Great sound and power. Highly recommend these as a combo. Thanks for you great customer support crutchfield!!!

Pros: Great stereo for the price and a lot of adjustability. Almost too much.

Cons: Only issue was the first stereo had an issue playing low frequencies but I am extremely satisfied with the replacement and crutchfield customer service!!!

This is my first Alpine head unit coming from Pioneer. It's connected to four Focal coaxial speakers and a F300 Alpine amp and this setup sound something wonderful! I bought this receiver mainly for the FLAC feature, which works flawlessly through the front USB port. However, please be aware that m4A files are not supported, such as Apple's AAC. Not a big deal since I'm mainly listening to FLAC files, but it is worth mentioning. Doesn't take away from the awesome sound though!

Pros: Easy to use, great sound quality, plays hi-res FLAC files

    Cons: Doesn't support m4A files

Great value for the price. I can remember back in the day spending 3 or 4 times more money on a product with less features. Granted, we didn't have bluetooth and smartphones in the 90's, but I'm very happy with the purchase. Took a bit to get used to it and figure out the features. when all else fails, read the instructions. The tuning app is icing on the cake. Well done Alpine!

    Pros: adjustability, sound quality, options.

    Cons: none so far

Great deck with great sound. I purchased this deck to replace a 14 year old Alpine that was working great except for the AM radio. I don't listen to AM that often but want to have it when in the mood to listen to talk radio or sports in my area. This deck is so much better than the older one but then again it could also be attributed to the new Type R speakers that I also installed as well. Easy to pair the phone to and BT sound for phone and music is very good. I haven't used the USB or AUX input yet but the CD and radio sounds are unreal!

Pros: Easy install, easy to use, great sound and very happy!

Cons: Not having a printed manual is the only thing I didn't like but I was able to use the disc in my laptop to set up the deck.

Product installed rather easily although there was one extra wire that did not match up to the harness that was provided but apparently was not necessary for the proper operation of the unit. Unit set up for balance, fade, equalizer can be set up via an app that can be downloaded to your smart phone.Approximately 2 hours to install, most of this was pairing up all of the wires.

Pros: Fit easily into dash opening. I did need the u-clip to insert into the Ford factory unit to remove it. Without that device I am not sure it would to have been successful.

Cons: Directions did not indicate that the u-clip needed to be rotated outward or inward to release the factory unit from the dash. Once I discovered this it came out easily. The last time I installed a unit from Crutchfield I thought there were more written instructions.

I replaced my Kenwood receiver with this Alpine for two reasons, my Kenwood didn't have the extra output for a sub-woofer and the radio reception was poor. This Alpine had what I wanted and the radio reception improved greatly! I'm not sure if I'll use all the functions but it has bluetooth for hands off for phone function using a mic. So far I'm loving this receiver and it looks great as Alpine should be!

Pros: Two amps and one sub-woofer outputs. Great radio reception circuitry. Many other good functions like bluetooth. Alpine great look!

Cons: No bass boost, need external bass unit! Instruction could be improved! Not much cons to this unit, even the price was reasonable!

Great head unit. I usually go Pioneer. This time I got hung up on the pre outs. There are 3 and they are 4 volt. With this Alpine unit I got a good mix quality and features without going broke buying it. I had to replace my Pioneer because the CD player failed. New head units have so many more source options that I decided a new stereo was preferable to finding a device to plug into the AUX jack. I'm not impressed with the flashy displays. So I put my money into more stereo rather than display lights. This Alpine sounds great and I have so many adjustments for my sound.

Pros: Sound field control. 4 V pre-outs Simple yet classy looks. Crutchfield shipping and tech support is amazing Setting the clock is easy Crutchfield sends you everything you need to install this unit for the same or similar price. If bought at a retail store this stuff would cost extra.

Cons: Setting all of those sound settings isn't the easiest thing to do. Maybe its better with the phone app but I don't have the phone to do that.

I had to replace a faulty Sony MEX XB 100BT that had a built in 40 watts RMS per channel amplifier with this Alpine 163BT radio and purchased the Alpine 45 watt per channel Power pack with it. I loved the Sony and it sounded great. The power pack sounds just as good as Sony's built in amplifier with the exception of the Sony maybe having a lower noise floor amd S/N Ratio. The amount of adjustability this radio has is on Par with Alpines $700 double din units. I used the Alpine tuning app to help me tune this radio and the app works awesome. The 9 band parametric EQ, time alignment, multiple crossover and octave points, and Base EQ settings are very helpful. I used a Studio 6 app (not Alpine) with the RTA in the app to help me tune this radio, Pioneer speakers, and JL Audio Basewedge 10" sealed subwoofer to my 2012 Mazda 5. It took a lot of time to dial all that in but once I did the sound improvement was fantastic. My wife called me the day after, which she never does, to tell me that the sound system sounds better than it ever has before. I've had the factory radio driving these speakers, then the Sony, and now the Alpine. The subwoofer has always been driven by an older Alpine 150 watt RMS mono amplifier. The lower end JL Audio WxV0 subwoofer I have in this car now sounds as good as my JL Audio 8" W3V3 Microsub in my other car. Be careful with the subwoofer pre out and controls, see con. I had to consult a certified Alpine installer to get it right.

Pros: Pro level tuning ability that gives you the ability to make any system sound great. Nice clean radio interface that doesn't need to impress with flashy colors and gimmicky trickery. Alpine includes a hard case for the detachable face; nice! Built in amplifier sounds good but plug and play power pack really makes the speakers come to life, I ran separate 10 gauge power and ground on mine.

Cons: Alpine does not include a paper manual that you can bring with you into the vehicle to help yo install and learn the features of the radio, which was a major inconvenience for me. They give you a CD with the manual on it that you then have to print out so you can do this. The subwoofer pre output signal is weaker than other radios I have had in the past. The Subwoofer level is actually -15 db at 0 and 0 at +15 on the adjustment, which seems counter intuitive to me and had me confused for a day.

I bought one of these and installed it easily. Everythign seamed to work OK until I tried hands-free calling with an Iphone6. For some reason, when pushing the hands-free call button on the stereo, the call would go through but no audio would transfer either to the caller or from the caller. But when I would use the phone to select a contact and press call. it would work fine. And if someone called me, I could press the hands-free call button on the stereo and the audio would work fine. It was only happening when initiating the call from the stereo. The techs at Crutchfield are very good and understanding. They immediately sent out a replacement. But low-and-behold the new one has the exact same problem! I'm pretty sure this is a software defect in these units. I have bought 2 Alpine hands-free CD/Receivers before and I'm generally happy with their value and performance. The next time I called I decided to get a prior model that he said was being discontinued and less expensive.

    Pros: sound quality

Cons: poor quality control on BT calling with Iphone 6

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine CDE-163BT features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-163BT.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Alpine CDE-163BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Alpine head unit (only one device can be used at a time). You can also pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Alpine head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the CDE-163BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

    • Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-163BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.
    • Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-163BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-163BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 contacts (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine CDE-163BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the CDE-163BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-163BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with limited control and song/artist information. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music navigation.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-163BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. You can also select which speakers output Bluetooth audio. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.
    • Sound Types: This unit provides 5 methods to improve the sound quality of your calls. You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).
    • Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device. Choose All (audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car), F-L (sound is only output from the front left speaker), F-R (sound is only output from the front right speaker), or F-LR (sound is output from the front left and front right speakers).

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

    • Off Insert/Eject + Auto Reload: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback. When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.
    • Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-163BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Alpine CDE-163BT features a front-panel USB (type-A) port. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as a USB thumbdrive or flashdrive. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, & FLAC audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: The head unit's USB port is not compatible with Android smartphones.

MP3/WMA/FLAC Playback: The Alpine CDE-163BT supports the following types of MP3, WMA, & FLAC music files recorded onto CD-R/RW disc or loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type CD-R/RW USB MSC

For discs and USB devices without ID3, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-163BT offers Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Repeat Play (repeats playback of current track/file), Folder Repeat (repeats only files in current folder).

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Alpine CDE-163BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your  Lightning or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The CDE-163BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-471i cable (500KCU471I, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-163BT.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-163BT.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Alpine CDE-163BT lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. You can then search these categories alphabetically (A-Z). You can adjust the effect level (0-6) of the selected profile from the head unit.

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-163BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-336.6cm) of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, Disc, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

Alpine's TuneIt App: The Alpine TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPhone (iOS 7.0+ ) or Android smartphone (2.2+) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-163BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I/500KCU471I sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The Alpine TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-163BT. Follow the simple graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The Alpine TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the Alpine TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to Alpine's TuneIt app will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

Clock Display: The head unit displays a 12- or 24-hour clock. The clock can be set to remain on even after head unit is switched off, as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position.

Stay On Mode: You can set the delay in turning off the head unit's power after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. When you select a source mode, other than Off, the music will be paused after you turn the ignition key off. At the same time, the prompt "Press Preset 6 to Stay On" will scroll once. Press Preset 6 within 15 seconds to continue to listen to your music for the select period of time (off/5/15/30 min). If Preset 6 is not pressed, the unit will power off within 15 seconds. Factory radio died on me a while ago, and I put off replacing it, since I needed a bracket to instal a standard DIN unit. When the knob that controls the AC blower broke, that was it. So I got the bracket, and now I'll get bluetooth with this headunit, and hopefully much better sound. Word to the wise: I should have bought the aftermarket adapter along with the headunit. I was trying to spread out the work and cost, but ended up missing out on a big discount if I had purchased them together. [ Luke  Jul 09, 2017 ]

I bought this stereo based on a recommendation by a Crutchfield advisor to go with the Alpine brand due to the frustration caused by another brand that I've bought a few times before and have always had the problem of not being able to read the display on sunny days. I also liked that it has three sets of preamp outputs, I've only ever bought stereos in the past that had one or two sets, so this unit should be a nice upgrade for me. [ CORY  Mar 08, 2017 ]

Four reasons: 1. Alpine is supposedly very good quality audio. I've had Kenwood and Panasonic in the past. I'm ready to try Alpine now. 2. The head unit will play FLAC files. Good quality audio is extremely important to me. MP3 just doesn't cut the mustard. 3. The iPhone app, where I can preset the equalizer with a file designed for my car or create my own settings and save the settings to the iPhone app. 4. A head unit with more than a 3 band equalizer. I'm not sure, hopefully tech support will be able to answer that. But, This is optimized for Pandora. I got this back in Aug of 16. It's amazing. Since then, I've switched over to Spotify and it's even better. As soon as I get in my truck it picks up Spotify from my phone and plays my Playlist. I used to have xm and serious radio, Spotify (or even Pandora) is WAY better. I pay about ten bucks a month and I get access to about any song ever made. Oh, this even has an app that helps you tune your player to your specific vehicle, AND the LEDs are tunable too! Choose one of the basic colors, or dial in one of several thousand colors. If you upgrade your system or speakers later, you can adjust the tuning in minutes. And the tech support is crazy. I called them twice during my installation and they were super knowledgeable and nice. They will be able to tell you exactly how to tie in your Xm if that's how you want to go, but no matter what you're looking at the best player. Sure, you can pay more for something else, but this is the best value. Sorry for not answering your question exactly, but I like mine so much I felt compelled to share. Hope it helps.

This could be one of two issues. The wiring harness has a lead that connects to a constant on source. This source provides power to the head unit so that it will retain its settings. If this lead was not connected, you would lose your settings (ie. clock etc.) whenever you switch the ignition off and exit the vehicle. The other issue could be a standard setting on the head unit itself that keeps the clock on the display at all times by default. Please refer to your manual for the specific settings.

I read the manual and searched around a little bit, but can't figure out what the DEFEAT option in the advanced menu does. There is a very distinct difference in sound, and the owners manual contains the keyword as "Fader/DEFEAT"; suggesting they're similar? Appreciate the help, thanks.

    A
The "DEFEAT" function of your CDE-163BT disables the head units built in signal processor and reverts settings to the factory default settings. This feature will help you to diagnose phase and signal issues as well as noise issues caused by ground loop and other feedback that are sometimes masked by a head units built in DSP.

What is the max current the Alpine CDE-163BT draws?
    [ Mark  Sep 26, 2017 ]
    1 answer
    A
The Alpine uses a 10a fuse so, the current draw will not exceed 10amps without blowing the fuse. I hope that helps, My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

No problems here. The bass is strong in my BMW 330ci. The unit drives the sub with no modifications. Maybe it's due to BMW factory stereo being an Alpine?

When I pair up my galaxy s4 to the bluetooth the stereo plays the music clearly but there is a skip during the songs around every 20 seconds. Is this my phone or the receiver?

I only use an iPhone to connect with the Bluetooth to my Alpine. I have not had that problem as yet. I would suggest deleting the Alpine app and reloading the app onto your galaxy to see if that takes care of the problem

    [ Alan  Apr 18, 2017 ]

I'm afraid the Alpine CDE-163BT CD receiver doesn't have any specific "anti-skip" features for use when 4-wheeling. For more information on something that does, feel free to reach out to an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat.

I have problem that my cde163ebt doesn't support to play M4A files. My previous cde145e have no problem with M4A files. Although this unit can play FLAC files very well. Does anyone have same problem?
    [ Ari  Mar 31, 2017 ]
    1 answer
    A
If you are trying to play DRM free files on this unit, the best thing to do will be to convert those files to MP3 format. The issue stems from the coding of M4A files. The CDE-163BT does not read the M4A file format because of the absence of a particular DRM code. Converting your files to MP3 will allow you to play them without the coding issues.

What size of USB stick is supported?
    [ nickrussia  Aug 26, 2016 ]
    1 answer
    A
In the manual for the receiver it says the unit can recognize 255 folders and 255 items per folder. That would be 65025 songs. It doesn't have the maximum usb stick size in the manual. At 4mb per song this would be around a 256 GB stick.

Anyone? I bought this unit and was really impressed until I tried playing my cd when the car was hot, it sounded scratchy like playing a 45 record until the car down usually after I parked it under shade for 15 minutes then it would play great again. Perfect when cold but always scratchy when hot! Anyone having this problem, I need to know if it's only my unit! I even gave it a good review, should have waited! Thanks

It supports version 2.1+EDR for Bluetooth. I don't have any information on specific testing that has been done with a Samsung Note 4, but I do expect it to work because the Bluetooth version in your phone is newer (based on web searches) and is backwards compatible with the Bluetooth in this receiver. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Does this have variable color illumination?

All you have to do is hold down the 'Setup' button (the one with the eighth note symbol) for more then two seconds, you should then see 'Audio' and scroll right until you see 'Display/Illumination,' select it, select 'Illumination' and it should allow you to scroll through the color options. Found the exact color to match my '96 Honda Prelude. Couldn't be happier!

Not sure what you mean with "variable" color illumination. The CDE-163BT has two features regarding the color. The first is the "Changing Lighting Color"; you can change the display color to one of the 30 predefined colors, or create your custom color. HINT: the color change is only for the LCD disply, the blue "Scan" button and the other main elements stay blue (that disappointed me). The second option is the "Dimmer Control"; Set the Dimmer control to AUTO to decrease the illumination brightness of the unit with the head lights of the vehicle ON. This mode is useful if you feel the unit's backlighting is too bright at night. I recommend to download the manual linked on the Crutchfield of the CDE-163BT page, very detailed and helpful.
