Sound options

For more music, you can also plug in a USB drive loaded with MP3, WMA, and FLAC files, and you'll find an auxiliary input for other sources, too. And, of course, you can slip in a store-bought or recordable CD in the front panel slot. When you've got time to do some fine-tuning, you'll appreciate the options offered by the 3-band parametric equalizer and its 11 preset tone curves. Two sets of preamp outputs let you hook up amplifiers for additional power for your system. This receiver also works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact 4-channel power amp that plugs right into your Alpine receiver's wire harness and sends 45 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Decent upgrade to crappy Infinity head unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent upgrade from Infinity system head unit. Much more clarity and bass. This unit provided the simple interface my wife needed. She didn't need all the blue tooth etc just the CD. The ready harness was great and made this easy install. Only had to make a quick call to tech support due to the reverse rca jack to get the rear speakers to work. Probably due to the factory amp. Crutchfield provided great support. Bravo! I am buying from them again.

Pros: Good reception, clarity and improved bass. Detachable face and easy to use

Cons: Like other reviews the source button is too bright at night.

great upgrade over stock, should have done this sooner

Just had this receiver installed in my restored '87 BMW 535i and it sounds great!! Highly recommend and a great sounding receiver for the price.

Pros: Good mid-range and more watts per channel than my previous Alpine.

Cons: Don't seem to get as much output from the kick panel speakers, but they may be a separate issue? Don't know yet. Trying to figure it out.

    Great Alpine quality! But......

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is really nice! Great Alpine quality! The only complaint I have is; I am unable to update the firmware on this head unit. I tried two different, freshly (FAT 32) formatted flash drives and I keep getting the same "update error" message. I've been in contact with Alpine; but to no avail. I miss the good 'ole analog audio days. Software driven electronics will give plenty of headaches.

    Pros: Audio quality Appearance

    Cons: Unable to update firmware

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alpine CDE-170 sounds good. The AM radio reception is tremendous. Install was not as planned as I bought a ReadyHarness which wasn't ready for anything but splicing into my existing set of plugs that came with the previous Crutchfield Sony unit that I was replacing. Not a huge problem, just a huge disappointment.

    Pros: Sounds great

Cons: Crutchfield ReadyHarnessT Service? Not even close. Lucky my last install was a Crutchfield Sony that had connectors which matched my truck which I spliced in to what came with the Alpine.

    1991 Volvo 940
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 50+ years of Volvo and Saab ownership, car stereo installation, and technical work, it never ceases to amaze me how complete the Crutchfield kits are. The 2 wiring harnesses with plugs for a 1991 Volvo 940 fit perfectly, and only required splicing a dozen or so wires to bypass the existing amplifier which wasn't working anyway! The speakers were miraculously fine, and didn't need replacement. This Volvo has 6 speakers, and the sound (for this car) was more than satisfying. For a daily driver, this car's owners were more than pleased with the sound!

Pros: complete wiring plugs and harnesses, great sound, easy installation of the face in the dash.

    Cons: none!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The deck and wiring harness arrived in the time promised. It only took two calls to tech support to figure out to install and it all worked well. My only disappointment is that the deck will not play an Ipod. I can copy music from Itunes to a USB drive but the only way to play from the Ipod is to us the auxiliary port and that does do show the song title or artist.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a good deal for the price. I've only had it installed for a few hours, but here is my initial impression. The sound is good: I have stock speakers and I think it sounds a little better than the stock unit. Installation and setup is easy. The controls are easy to understand and menus easy to navigate. There are two things I'm not a fan of: the volume knob is a little "mushy", and by that I mean the action between clicks are not notchy. Not a huge deal, and it doesn't affect functionality. The second thing is that I don't believe this unit has auto-dimming. The wire is present and I hooked it up, but the unit only has three options: on, off, and clock when it comes to the dimmer.

    Pros: Price, sound, menu/setup

    Cons: Auto dimmer, volume knob

This is a great unit ! I've installed this in multiple cars and for the price it's the BEST product in its class bar none. And for a Alpine and Alpine quality for me it's no other choice.

Pros: Cost - quality - alpine reliability

Cons: For this price there are None....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent unit. Sound is as good as some high priced Alpine radios I have owned in the past. The controls for this radio are actually approaching intuitive. This is a much appreciated improvement over a couple of my previous Alpines. I installed the radio in my Miata with an eye towards cutting down on unnecessary clutter as the space is quite limited. With four 8 gig usb thumb drives one can load in excess of 100 cds.

Pros: Price, sound quality, USB, 24 bit FLAC file playback, sufficient power.

Good Display, 24 bit playback with usb

    2004 BMW 3 Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think this is a good head unit for our needs. I didn't want bluetooth, for security reasons and this was one of the few units that had that omitted from its feature set. The 24bit converters seem intriguing although i think being able to listen to straight .wav files would be better than having to convert to FLAC- So I have yet to hear my mixes in 24 bit as i produce music for a living and prefer a higher bit rate for resolution. Oh yeah the steering control does not work yet either-possibly the harness. The Crutchfield directions are very good though and hook up was a breeze even though i am not using as intended due to the 2004 BMW 325i onboard amp and funky ohm ratings on an array of I will be getting speakers and doing a further install-wasn't quite plug and play as the website advertised this. But, all-in-all that has more to do with the platform(BMW) than the head unit and I believe this is a good one . BTW, my head unit was missing when i bought my car and the Alpine will do fine with a better speaker complement i'm sure. Just make sure you're car is easier to install than mine YMMV. Thanks Crutchfield for your service!

Pros: Usb, cd and steering wheel control. No Bluetooth (for me a +)

Cons: No ohm rating on website had to go to manufacturer site and still no straight answers. No remote, although higher $ units have that.

    Android/Aux Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Alpine CDE-170 enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android devices through its front-panel USB port. There are two types of modes (AOA 2.0 or MTP) to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

    • AOA 2.0 (Stored Music & Music Apps): The CDE-170 supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the CDE-170's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Alpine head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Android Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • MTP (Stored Music + Song/Artist Info): The CDE-170 also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Alpine receiver's front-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's front-panel LCD. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.
Note: You will need to setup Android connectivity within the head unit's menu. Select "MSC/MTP" for MTP playback and "Android" for AOA 2.0 playback.

Auxiliary Input: The unit is equipped with front-panel minijack (3.5mm) auxiliary input, so you input audio from an auxiliary source unit; such as a portable MP3 player. You can adjust the volume level of your connected Aux device from -8dB to +18dB, negating the need to adjust the volume level between sources each time.

    Disc/USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3 and WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

    • Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.
    • Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.
    • Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-170 no more that 35° above horizontal.

USB MSC Compatibility: The Alpine head unit's front-panel USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device, such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, & FLAC audio files stored on a compatible USB mass-storage class device. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 0.5A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: The head unit's USB port is not compatible Apple iOS devices, USB hubs or card readers.

Compatible Music Files: The Alpine CDE-170 supports the following types of MP3, WMA, & FLAC music files recorded onto CD-R/RW disc or loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type CD-R/RW USB MSC
File System ISO 9660 Level 1/2, Joliet, Romeo FAT 16/32
Playable File Types  MP3: bit rate of 8-320 kbps w/ sampling frequency of 16-48 kHz
bit rate of 32-192 kbps w/ sampling frequency of 32, 44.1, 48 kHz
MP3: bit rate of 8-320 kbps w/ sampling frequency of 16-48 kHz
bit rate of 32-192 kbps w/ sampling frequency of 32, 44.1, 48 kHz

    Maximum # of Folders/Files 150 folders/300 files 256 folder/256 files per folder
    Tags ID3,WMA, FLAC tags

Music Browsing: When you are playing a disc or USB device with ID3 or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs and USB devices without ID3 or WMA tags; searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song. You can even use Jump mode to quickly search your music list in 10% increments.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-170 offers Repeat and Random playback modes for both disc and USB playback. Repeat modes include All, Track, and Album. Random modes include Album, Device/Disc, or Off.

    Audio & Tuner Section

24-Bit D/A Converter: The Alpine CDE-170 uses a 24-bit D/A converter for superb sound quality and playback of your music.

CTA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CTA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CTA (Consumer Technology Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CTA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CTA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Alpine CDE-170 features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs (Front & Sub). The subwoofer output features a low-pass filter (80/100/120Hz), phase adjustment (normal/reverse), and output level control (0 to +15).

Note: The Alpine CDE-170 is not equipped with rear preamp outputs.

High-Pass & Low-Pass Crossover:  The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass crossover for its front and rear speaker-level outputs and front preamp output. You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off (full-range) The unit is also equipped with a low-pass crossover for the subwoofer preamp output that can be set to 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off (full-range).

Equalizer: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat (off), Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. The User Preset activates the head unit's 3-Band Equalizer for a better sound response curve. Bass, Mid, & Treble can be adjusted with the 3-Band EQ.

The alarm will only sound if the receiver's built-in amplifier is used.

Single-Line, High-Contrast LCD: The single-line, high-contrast LCD has 5x the contrast of a conventional screen, so the display is always easy to read. Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.
