Nice stereo and a big improvement over stock. controls are not the easiest to learn but they come in time. The sound is awesome, and it is powerful. Plus it is an alpine, enough said. should include the steering wheel controls and the volume button feels loose but doesn't impact the radio.

Seriously the best! The user interface of the CDE-172 is simple, it offers a full range of color customization, and offers a seamless, straight forward stereo with a few bells and whistles (like sub preamp outputs). I've had this stereo in two previous vehicles, and absolutely love it.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I decided to buy this radio based on the good reviews here. I am NOT disappointed. What great sound. I had planned to replace the stock speakers in my 2003 Ford Ranger but not now. I had no clue that the stock speakers could sound so good. All it takes is a good radio. The installation instructions were a bit misleading but I finally got them figured out. This is my first Alpine product and I am thrilled with the sound, functionality and quality. I do agree with other reviewers that the buttons are too small. It is easy to fat finger a function.

Pros: Sound quality Functionally Price point

Cons: Button are a bit too small Misleading instructions for installation

MEDFORD

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The GOOD: Great Sound even with my stock speakers. I love the bass program button that gives you just the right amount of bass kick and highs. Lots of operating modes, tuner, CD, Bluetooth, Pandora, and Sirius XM. The BAD: Takes it a while to recognize and connect to my Android phone. Sometimes necessitating having to open my connections menu and re-selecting all the interfaces. When restarting the car and starting Pandora, the audio is extremely skippy for about a minute and then it settles down and plays normally. The UGLY: The front panel release button is RIGHT NEXT to the phone button, so when I'm driving and want to answer the phone it's very easy to miss the phone button and you end up ejecting your front panel onto the floor. Then I have to illegally pick up the phone to answer it.

Pros: Great Sound, many features Adjustable display color

Cons: Slow connection to phone Skippy Bluetooth Poor eject button placement

Alpine Always Delivers

1999 Toyota Tacoma

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought an older truck and wanted to have a head unit that gave me Bluetooth functionality and the Alpine delivered. The quality and expectation I had from Alpine has not changed over the last 20 years and for the price, it's a home run. The microphone cord is long enough to mount it anywhere in your vehicle. Fantastic options for the display(s) and great tuning options for standard stereo set ups.

Pros: Great Bluetooth usability for phone calls and for all audio coming from the phone. USB and Aux inputs for great audio connection and charging.

Cons: Navigation through some of the options is a little cumbersome.

Great Headunit

Crutchfield customer from Renton, WA on 6/18/2020

1991 Toyota Pickup

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I got the Alpine CDE-172BT as a replacement for the very old Sony headunit in my 91 Toyota pickup. I was looking for something that had BT connectivity, that also played CD's and the added bonus of it playing nicely with Pandora which is my main music streaming source made this a homerun. Install was simple and straightforward, the headunit is relatively easy to use, although not completely intuitive but nothing a quick search in the user manual didn't fix. What I didn't realize is that it would readout the song titles on CD's and since my immaturity is that of a 12 year old, I had to play a song called sex to take a picture.

Pros: Bluetooth, plays cd's, easy install, plays well with android.

Cons: none for me

The interface on this Alpine unit looks very similar to a Pioneer and a Kenwood that I have in other vehicles. The biggest difference is that the buttons, and menu navigation are much easier to use. The display also seems brighter. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat, and will likely soon replace my Kenwood with this same Alpine unit.

Pros: Easy to use: both buttons and menu navigation

Installed this in an old 92 ford ranger so both myself and my old girl could get up to speed. The main reason is for the blue tooth phone, which is working flawlessly and also the cd player which is becoming harder to find. Very Happy!

Big bang for your budget bucks

Crutchfield customer from Okeechobee, FL on 6/2/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is coming from "for the money" as this would be considered a budget head unit. I went from 2 Din to single Din. And this unit almost slipped itself in to the adapter. Read the owners manual, it tells you step by step in very simple detail all the functions and settings and how to get there. Now? I jump in, turn thr key and within seconds Bluetooth is already paired with my phone. It has a bass boost built in but I find it dulls out the brilliant highs this unit can produce. My main reasons for buying? 1) It's an Alpine, period. 2) 4 volt signal to the amplifier. 3) Loads of ways to customize the sound to your ears. I ran the unit for one week by itself and I was impressed with the volume and sound quality. When I added a amplifier, it took on a life of its own and has been pleasing me since.

Pros: Exceptional value, easy to setup and use

Cons: None

Great Entry stereo to Alpine!!

Crutchfield customer from Hernandez, NM on 4/24/2020

2003 Toyota Tacoma

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Easy to use stereo with great features. Plays music with enough power for stock listening, but upgrade the factory speakers and its sounds so much better! The Bass feature definitely puts some depth to the tunes and with no problems. Overall for a nice well rounded entry market stereo I'd say it's worth the price for what you get. If you don't need fancy shmancy, this stereo definitely gets the job done. If you are an audiophile and require quality, looks to alpines top model offerings! I had a CDA-9884 from 2011 that I bought from crutchfield and installed myself. It was still going as strong as the day I bought it, just very outdated lacking BT built-in, usb or aux jack.

Pros: Easy to use Decent power Simple straightforward design

Cons: Requires Microphone plugged into jack in back of unit for BT phone calls No fold down face

New cheap Alpine unit for my 2002 M-B SLK 230

Dennis J. from Niceville, FL on 4/6/2020

2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

OK, call me a curmudgeon or a 'throwback', but I really hate what I got to replace my stocl 2002 SLK stereo. Crutchfield did its best....quick action on my order. 5-stars for that - THANK YOU, Bill! Available units just not what I wanted - none of them. Shiny black looks really bad in my M-B dash! No need for a 'removable faceplate' (another aggravation I will learn to live with), and for my installation needs radios with a remote (!) seems just plain stupid - this cheap Alpine unit fortunately had no remote! (Actually, I believe it was optional.) Shiny black and the bright LED lighting - I just got a unit that seemed like I could just it to get an unobtrusive amber coloring for the radio controls and a white or amber for the display - OK, so I got that set up. I guess it'll do. So its about 1-2 stars for the unit (radio function (BT, calls, XM, and so on) is also fine...so it is an average of 3-stars for the unit's review. As I said below, install took only about an hour or so. Final mount (and wire run to wherever) for the satellite radio antenna yet to be decided on. (Could use rear trunk lid (old German telephone or GPS) mount cover for the XM radio antenna....but it's an effort to run the wire behind the dash, by the pax seat, and into the wiring harness for the trunk lid to mount it. (It may end up just under the front right inside windshield on top of the dash. ???) Same thing for the BT phone mic...options still open. Hope this helps others. Be safe.

Pros: Easy-peasy install with the Ready Harness. :-) THANKS!!! Hour to install (basic, to see if everything worked - it did); still have yet to 'fix it permanently' in the dash. No issue with price. XM radio is nice to have; hands-free BT for my iPhone, and my wife's, works OK so far. Still have yet to figure where the satellite antenna will mount...and the microphone. Shipment quick from Crutchfield (but it took me from a Jan purchase to April to do the install!).

Cons: I hate how it looks in my dash! I hated all the available units (Sony, Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, et al.) All are gloss black (nothing flat or a nice dark gray to fit the M-B dash). It looks like crap! I hate the LED lighting...got it to a pale amber for the buttons and display, and will just have to learn to live with it, I guess. No other choices.

So I've had this unit for a year now. I really like it! It's easy to use and easy to see. Most importantly, it sounds great! My only fault with it is that I haven't gotten the hands free microphone to work as of yet. However, to be fair, I haven't gone all out in trying to fix it nor have I contacted Crutchfield. But overall I would recommend it to anybody at the price Crutchfield offers it for.

Pros: Good Sound on the CHEAP, Easy to see face-plate, lots of connectivity options

Cons: Screwy phone/mic controls/hookup

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I'm a purist, so exchanging my OEM radio in my 2003 Eurovan was a tough decision. But so far I'm happy. Great sound. Super easy install using Crutchfield adapter. Set up was easy. BT connection was smooth and simple. Iphone works perfectly...put the mic in in one of the fake dashboard buttons, simply by drilling a 1/2" hole in it and it works and looks the best. stringing the connection cable was so much simpler that way too. Navigation from Tuner to BT to Aux to SXM to USB as well as the numerous FM/AM 1,2,3 ... can be tiresome, wish I could skip the ones I don't use.

Pros: Easy to install and setup. Sounds Great.

Cons: Navigation is a bit tedious.

PITA Installation Instructions

Joe from Indianapolis, IN on 2/22/2020

2003 Ford Escape

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I've done quite a few of these Crutchfield installations and this one was by far the most difficult. It came with a FMK550 mounting kit from American International. Nowhere in the instructions does it say that the DIN sleeve can't be used with this "main bracket" but it shows how to install it implying that it is necessary. It won't fit through the opening from the front and it would only fit from the back if you turn it around backwards. Also, they talk about "spacer nubs" that "might" have to be filed off but they don't show clearly which ones they are. The ones that have to be filed off are the ones on the ISO Mounting Brackets. The brackets absolutely won't fit without filing them off so why put them on there to start with? And, they tell you to cut off the mounting tabs for an installation on the Ford Escape. The mounting tabs are actually useful in the event you open the "subdash" (I've been a motorhead for more than 50 years and this is a new term to me) too much, as I did. You have to drill a couple holes in the "subdash" for sheet metal screws to hold it in place but the fascia fits over the top, hiding it all. The unit is in, it plays great, it looks great and I am pleased with the result but it was a PITA to install and the instructions were not helpful at best and useless at worst. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it weren't for a general lack of clarity in the instructions. It wouldn't be all that hard to engineer a bracket that fits without any mods.

Pros: Good sound, good looks

Cons: Installation instruction were useless.

Extremely nice CD Receiver--Love Alpine clarity and flexibility

2005 Ford Taurus SE

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This along with four Polk DB+572 speakers were a clear improvement over a factory deck in my daughter's 2005 Taurus. A big plus is that it accepts CDs, BT, Aux, and USB (WMA's, MP3s, etc) to make it extremely versatile and phone calls could not be any clearer. She's thrilled. Thank you Alpine and please don't quit making these or similar decks!!! I've bought Alpine and hi-end Kenwood decks for the last 30 years for multiple cars and I constantly compare them...along with Pioneer and JVC. If I ever hear anything clearer and more natural than Alpine, I will buy it...but so far I haven't run across it. The hi-end Kenwoods I have bought were decent but I only got those because the Alpine's I wanted were unavailable or priced too high at the time.

Pros: Still plays CDS!!!!! Plus BT, Aux, and USB Input. Plays WMAs and MP3s. Both keys and display has separate colored lighting. Clear sound, very nice appearance. IMO bang for the buck is great for this unit.

Cons: None that I can think of.

I would have given this little radio 5 stars except the date cannot be displayed while the radio information is displayed. It does everything it says that it will and I was able to mount it in my 1998 Ford F-150 pickup without all of the cutting required by the double din. the Blue Tooth is excellent, paired with my LG V30 (Android) phone and routing the mic wire to my sun visor was also easy. I did notice in all of the videos I reviewed and I experience a lot of dash cracking. So if you plan to take an old dash apart for this model of truck expect it. I loved the upgrade and Crutchfield was helpful in convincing me that the colors on the "ready" wiring harness would work (even though the colors appeared to be reverse of the factory). Also I need to upgrade my speakers. (plan to do it with your upgrade).

Pros: Easy and no cutting. Great sound. Hands freed cell phone.

Cons: Smaller screen (compared to the double din) and the time can only be displayed or radio information.

This head unit alone has completely revamped my commuting experience. It replaced the old stock unit in my 2007 Hyundai Elantra. I absolutely love this head unit for many reasons. A few of which I was unaware of when purchased. It has every feature I was looking for and more. Dimmable display when lights turn on and off, blackout setting that will shut off all of its display lights, custom color options, Pandora integration, automatic Bluetooth connection, steering wheel control comparability and simply Alpine quality. If I ever purchase another commuter car, this will be at the top of the upgrade list.

Ordered Monday, installed it Friday (it arrived on Thursday but Jeep was in the shop) in time for a 2,500 mile road trip. Simple to follow instructions lead to an easy install. We are thrilled with the new life and sound this head unit has given this old (2005) Jeep Wrangler. The sub sounds better, the speakers sound better, it's also MUCH higher volume than the stock unit. The BT functionality and hands free use works great and callers have said they've never heard us so clearly. This radio made my wife want to keep the Jeep instead of selling it and I plan to buy one for my Jeep as well!

Pros: Easy install, excellent sound, great features, clear Bluetooth, far better than stock radio in all ways.

Cons: Can't think of any!

I think the CDE-172BT is an excellent car stereo. The sound is a big improvement over my factory radio. I had it professionally installed and it looks great. One thing that was a bit tricky for me was changing the display / buttons color. You have to go into the menu, and find what you are looking for, and it is a little tricky. But I got that figured out and all is good. It has a lot of choices for music, like Bluetooth, USB flash drive, CD's, aux. jack to plug in an ipod, and Sirius XM with optional adaptor, and a few other choices. I tried out a call using the Bluetooth, and sound was great, and my caller could hear me just fine. I like that you can remove the faceplate for security when leaving in public parking garages. You can adjust the brightness of the dislplay lighting which is nice if you don't like it too bright. My installer said he had to change to RCA cables when putting this in (factory radio didn't use RCA cables I guess) so I'm glad I had it installed, that would have thrown me if I installed it. Anyway, I am very pleased with this little stereo, it really rounded out my system nicely, and the price was very reasonable (I got an open box one and it was perfect, saved me $13!. I would give 5 stars except for the learning curve in changing the display/buttons color back to how I wanted, but once I got used to it it is really pretty easy. Had to beat for the price, and it's an Alpine!

Good radio for the price

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Used it to replace the factory radio. Contacted support via chat for a recommendation and had this one recommended. Great sound, easy to configure, (easier then another manufacturer's product I had purchased for another vehicle.) Installation was easy and quick. Bluetooth synced without an issue with my android phone and using it for phone calls is easy. No complaints from recipients regarding the voice quality from the included microphone. Playing music from the phone via Bluetooth was also clear. Only complaint is the display, even set to brightest settings, is difficult to read during the day. As a result, found it easier to configure the radio and save stations at dusk then during the day.

Pros: Good sound, easy to setup, configure and use. AM1, AM2, FM1, FM2, FM3 so you can save lots of your favorite stations.

Cons: Display not bright enough

Today I pulled out my 15 year old Alpine CDA9807 and flawlessly installed my openbox CDE172BT. Powered on FM and the Lord looked down upon my work and was playing the blessed Kashmir as the first audio out on this wonderful unit. BT paired without issue, external microphone was crystal clear for phone test, voice button made Google search a piece of cake. Hands down the easy upgrade I've done in years. Now this old Grandpa can pull up my 98 Dodge Ram next to those young whippersnappers at stop lights cranking real music that was meant to played at 11.

Pros: Simple install, flawless bluetooth audio and phone, 3 line outs, simple operation, volume knob

Cons: Nothing

The sound is great and I love the features. Install went very well on my PT cruiser. I bought the xm tuner only because of the $70 rebate but I discovered there are some good channels so maybe I'll keep it. Crutchfield has the best customer service I have ever experienced

Pros: Value. Quality. Features.

Cons: Small buttons

It's in a 350z roadster and replaced a Bose system. The display is difficult to see with the top up and useless with it down. The sound is disappointing. The cheap standard radio in my Fusion sounds better and plays more stations. The buttons are too small and too numerous. The tuner has an odd quirk. The volume fluctuates by itself. This does not happen playing a CD. The auto time setting resets the clock to the wrong time.

Upgrade to my 15 year old sons factory radio. Wanted to install a hands free phone feature for safety, but got way more! This receiver is incredible! Easy to figure out, connect Bluetooth and use. Great reception. We used the pre-amp outputs and get awesome clarity and volume. I drive his car on occasion just for the system! Paired it with Polk speakers and a 1000watt Pioneer amp. Great bass even without Subs!!

Pros: Does everything you would want and sounds great. Great price for everything you get!

Cons: Haven't found any. He and I both love it.

I've been a fan of alpine for awhile. The first one I got replaced a Sony and there was no comparison. Now they're the only brand of head unit I buy. So I can't compare them to others but I highly recommend from the cheaper ones to the expensive they are worth it. Also I've installed radios at work and I've noticed that other brands have changed connectors and trying to switch radios of the same brand and basically the same model means changing connectors. Alpine has used the same connectors for awhile. I've swapped out the ones on my vehicles and it was nice just being able to plug in.

Love this unit

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this head unit and I love it I was looking for something that could handle my mids and highs jbl. because before I started out with a pioneer that was already in my vehicle full den and it sucked so I purchased a kenwood and j.b.l 6 1/2 speakers all the way around anyway kenwood is not like they used to I would jam on long road trips and the kenwood would go all scramble ish on me so I got on crutchfield and looked for a good alpine because you can't find thmno longer found this one and I was impressed from the start I just ordered the alpine ktp 445A brick amp a few days ago it just arrived yesterday and I installed it boost it up a little bit not as much as I was hoping but plug in play I prefer so I don't have to drain my battery and I hear a difference with my j.b.l's I think I will give it a few more days to see how much I can tweak my alpine head unit to the perfect sound if I can't get a better sound I might just return it and I buy me a soundstream 5000,.4 for mids and highs and a sub for a little bass any how I will repost what I think of it in a few days I give this head unit a 5 star rating

Pros: Easy setup

Awesome unit in my 2004 JEEP Grand Cherokee. Has so many features it should have cost a lot more than I paid for it!! It paired up with my I Phone and the Bluetooth so I can stream all my music through it and use my Sirius All Access as well. Maximizing my bang for my buck is what this unit allows me to do. The installation was easy with Crutchfield's easy to follow directions. Adam my advisor helped me match my system to my JEEP and he really knows his stuff! A BIG Thank You to Adam and to the whole Crutchfield experience for making this Alpine rock my JEEP.

Pros: Good Looking, Hands Free Option, USB option on front, plug and play with Alpine Amp options.

This is for my son's car and he was the one who selected this particular unit over a slightly cheaper and more powerful Sony, mostly for its looks, but it's hard to go wrong with an Alpine.

A happy medium for someone wanting modern features at a good price

Bryan from Eliot, ME on 12/23/2018

2005 Toyota Tacoma

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I surprised myself when I bought this head unit for my old 05 Tacoma rather than updating to a full screen double din unit. The main reason i went this route is that I appreciate the simple things these days. And mainly, the fact that upgrading to a double din unit most often means you have volume BUTTONS instead of a tangible and intuitive knob!! So this was the way to get modern features with an old style interface . With an iPhone plus i also couldn't justify a screen unit and saved a quarter the cost. So far it has treated me very well with the bluetooth connectivity. I do wish it had a more "advanced" EQ interface but i managed to get the sound dialed in where I wanted anyway.

Pros: volume knob is THE way to go, RGB color display matches my toyota orange perfectly, great simple unit that's easy to use but still modernizes an old truck

Cons: handsfree microphone sends a lot of "road" noise to the caller, but i blame that on my Tacoma being a utilitarian/unrefined truck with little sound deadening
