About the Alpine HCE-RCAM-WRA

Wrangle in reverse

Traditionally, you want to mount a backup cam in a centrally located spot on the rear of your vehicle, usually in close proximity to your license plate. If you're a Jeep Wrangler owner, you know that ain't happening because of where the Wrangler spare is traditionally stored. Alpine's HCE-RCAM-WRA offers a creative solution — a backup camera that mounts behind your spare tire and looks through the spokes to give you a view of what's behind you.

The camera

Alpine adds High Dynamic Resolution to the HCE-C1100 rear-view cam to give you their best picture yet. With HDR, you'll see more detail whether you're backing up in a bright parking lot at noon or a dark parking garage at midnight. The camera works with any aftermarket car stereo with a composite (RCA) camera input. With the addition of Alpine's SGS-CH01 camera interface (not included), you'll be able to integrate this camera with select Jeep Wrangler factory radios and add active parking lines.

Mounting bracket

Alpine's bracket uses your Wrangler's bolt pattern to mount behind your spare. On the camera end of the bracket, Alpine gives you the flexibility to move the camera to the left or right for a clear view through the Wrangler spare's 5x5 wheel pattern.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Product Research

Features

Vehicle Compatibility: The Alpine HCE-RCAM-WRA spare tire backup camera is compatible with 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler (JK) and Wrangler Unlimited (JK) models. The included spare tire mounting bracket installs behind the spare tire and extends the camera through the spokes of the wheel.

  • Composite Video (Universal): The HCE-RCAM-WRA can be connected to Alpine in-dash receivers and other aftermarket in-dash receivers via composite video.
  • Factory Radio Compatibility: In addition, it can be connected to the factory radio of your Jeep Wrangler using Alpine's SGS-CH01 Camera Interface (sold separately) which also adds active guide lines (no dealer programming required).
  • Dual Camera Option: The Alpine SGS-CH01 interface can be used in conjunction with the KCX-C2600B Universal Camera Switcher (sold separately) that allows you to add both the HCE-RCA-WRA spare tire backup camera and a front camera (sold separately) to the factory radio of your Jeep Wrangler.

Note: This rear-view camera system is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

HDR Camera: The Alpine HCE-RCAM-WRA is equipped with an HDR backup camera (HCE-C1100) that makes maneuvering your Jeep Wrangler JK in reverse easier and safer. A rearview camera is a great way to improve your parking skills and make backing up safer. The HDR backup camera employs a weatherproof (IP67) housing to protect the backup camera from the outdoor elements.

  • CMOS Images Sensor & Wide-Angle Lens: The rearview camera's equipped with a 1/3.7" CMOS image sensor with an effective resolution of 640 x 480 (307,200 total pixels). The image sensor offers automatic metering and automatic white balance adjustment for high-quality rearview images. The rearview camera's wide-angle lens has a focal length of f=1.34mm and brightness of f=1:2:0, with a 131° (h) x 103° (v) field of view.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Thanks to HDR technology, the picture quality is much better compared to regular camera systems, for even better visibility behind your vehicle when backing up, with a high-resolution and high-detail camera image. The rearview camera offers incredible image quality in varying levels of light with a wide illumination range (1.5 to 100,000 Lux). HDR (High Dynamic Range) and automatic fast exposure adjustment eliminates image wash-out common when going from areas of heavy shade into areas with bright sunlight (for example underground parking, tunnels, etc).

Note: Because this is a wide-angle lens, there is a difference in distance perspective between what is normally seen behind the vehicle and what appears on the screen of your in-dash receiver.

Spare Tire Mounting Bracket: The Alpine HCE-RCAM-WRA comes with a bracket that mounts between the spare tire and your Jeep Wrangler's 5x5 wheel pattern. The upper portion of the bracket can be positioned to the left or right of the wheel's spokes, ensuring that the attached camera has a clear line of sight behind the vehicle and is not blocked by the wheel.

Power & Ground: The HCE-RCAM-WRA's power (red) & ground (black) wires will need to be hardwired. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the reverse gear wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to connected to your vehicle's metal chassis.

Optional Multi-Camera Selector Interface: The optional Alpine KCX-C250MC Multi-Camera Selector Interface (500KCXC250, sold separately) allows as many as three camera systems (Front, Rear, & Side) to be connected to and controlled from select Alpine in-dash navigation receivers.

Q
I have a 2014 JK. Do I need any other components not get this to hook up to my stock radio?
[ Daniel  Jul 17, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
You will need a car specific interface to make any aftermarket back up camera work with your stock radio. The adapter needed to interface the Alpine HCE-RCAM-WRA with your stock radio is the Alpine HRN-CAMCH Camera Input Harness https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500HRNCAMC/Alpine-HRN-CAMCH-Camera-Input-Harness.html .

Q
I have a 2018 JK Rubicon Recon where the stock wheels spoke (5 spoke pattern) is in the center of where the camera would sit (where the camera is straight up in the bracket). Anyone know how far to the right or left it can be adjusted so I may be able to have it go between the spoke?
[ Bruce  Jul 08, 2022 ]
1 answer
A
We were not able to get the information on how far to the left/right the camera can swing from the information we got on it or from Alpine's support. The metal bar that the camera is attached to is the part that can be rotated left/right. the camera is roughly 1" tall which makes the bar appear to have up to 2" length for rotating. Since it will be in a circular motion, it is difficult to give exact numbers except when rotating it 90 degrees to the side and making it be 2" to the left/right and 2" down from the top position

Q
I have the iLX-207 with HCE-TCAM1-WRA rear camera. The camera no longer works. Will this camera be a clean swap at the plug on spare tire? Or will I have to run a new cable to the head unit? Any other option for clean swap?

We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question.

Q
Will this work with a 35 inch tire and extended tire carrier with aftermarket rims???
[ Tracey  Mar 31, 2021 ]
2 answers
A
Yes it will work. However I have developed such an annoying noise coming from the tire carrier due to this camera bracket. I have a terraflex tire carrier which is supposed to be very good. The noise is so bad that I'm going to have to remove that bracket and figure out another way to mount the camera
[ THOMAS  Apr 01, 2021 ]
A
It worked with my 18 inch aftermarket rim and 35 inch tire depends on how tight the spokes are on your wheel
[ BRENT  Mar 31, 2021 ]
Q
If I have the factory touch screen head unit can I buy this camera and then the 500HRNCAMC harness to install?
[ Dustin  Sep 27, 2020 ]
1 answer
A
Assuming the head unit you list is the Alpine iLX-W650, the Alpine camera and the 500HRNCAMC harness will match up to the head unit. The instructions included are clear. Just ensure you allow sufficient cable to bend easily without pinching when the Wrangler's rear gate closes. I have been more than satisfied with this set up.

Hi Dustin! Please contact us via online chat or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will need to gather additional information on your Jeep, before we can confirm that the Alpine HCE-RCA-WRA camera would be a compatible option for you.

Q
Can you get this with a non-adjustable mount?
[ Becker  May 14, 2020 ]
1 answer
A
We do have cameras from other manufacturer's that can mount using the spare tire location and are not adjustable. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to check our current inventory for such a camera

Q
If I already have the Alpine Restyle i207-WRA installed will this work automatically with reverse without splicing into the reverse light wire?
[ Nicholas  Apr 01, 2020 ]
4 answers
A
Yes it will.. I did not have to splice into anything.
[ New User  Apr 01, 2020 ]
A
Yes if you use the alpine proprietary plug it was plug and play. My only thought is the maestro device needs to be configured properly as well.
[ KEVIN H.  Apr 01, 2020 ]
A
The setup is all plug and play. No splicing required.
[ JOHN  Apr 01, 2020 ]
A
Yes just run the cord
[ George  Apr 01, 2020 ]
Q
can i buy just the bracket?
[ Mike  Feb 03, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
Call support and see if they can.
[ Matt  Feb 03, 2020 ]
A
The bracket comes as part of the camera package. Might be worth checking with Crutchfield to see if they'll sell the bracket alone though. System works great and bracket fits perfectly on a Jeep JKU.
[ Greg  Feb 03, 2020 ]
Q
My Jeep has an aftermarket Alpine head unit. Is this camera plug and play? In other words, after direct connection to head unit, is camera set and will automatically operate when car is in Reverse.
[ Danny  May 10, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
There will be some additional wires you need to splice into. Namely the reverse light wire, and a grounding point. The instructions will be included, and our tech support could help you if you had any problems!
