About the Alpine ILX-W650

A powerful combo

There are a lot of solid receivers out there that give you Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in Bluetooth®, and SiriusXM connectivity. Very, very few, however, boast the shallow chassis of Alpine's iLX-W650 (only 2-13/16" deep), making it a great candidate for a smooth installation in many "problem vehicles." And none are designed to fit perfectly with Alpine's KTA-450 power pack amplifier, a compact amp that packs an impressive 50 watts RMS by 4 channels. When secured together using Alpine's Power Stack installation gear, the iLX-W650 and amp are still less than 5" deep. If space is a commodity and you're thinking about building a system with more power, Alpine has the solution.

Built for the best smartphone experience

Your iPhone® or Android™ phone is your hub for music, maps, and communication, and Alpine brings that familiar experience to your dash with built-in Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Access the apps you need without getting distracted, and the 7" capacitive touchscreen works just like a tablet, so you'll feel right at home. And Alpine has enhanced the touchscreen experience with swipe control over volume, track-skipping, and more.

Streamlined control for driving

CarPlay and Android Auto make important functions easy to control with large, familiar app icons that you can find immediately when you need them. Other info appears on the screen in big, easy-to-read text on a clean, clutter-free background. You can also activate apps with voice commands, using the external microphone that's included with the receiver. You can make calls, compose texts, select tunes, and start navigation without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road.

Lots of entertainment

With a wired connection to your smartphone via the receiver's rear USB, you can browse through your phone's FLAC music files for playlists, songs, artists, and albums. And the iLX-W650 is SiriusXM-ready, so you can add a satellite radio tuner and enjoy your favorite music, sports, entertainment, and more anywhere you go.

Audio goodies

Use the 9-band parametric equalizer and 6-channel time-correction tools to maximize the audio signal sent to the powerful built-in amplifier. Three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for more power.

Get where you're going

If you need directions, launch your maps app using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to find out how to reach the coolest new spot in town. Just touch the convenient "voice" button on the receiver and ask. Your phone will handle the turn-by-turn directions, and the big capacitive touchscreen allows you to pinch-to-zoom the map display. You'll be able to pinpoint exactly where you need to be and, if need be, find a place to park.

Front- and rear-view, too

With two camera inputs, you can also install front- and rear-view cameras and use the receiver's built-in parking guides to back up safely in any crowded lot.

Some states and localities prohibit or restrict the use of video and information displays in vehicles – it is your responsibility to see if any restrictions or prohibitions apply in your area.

Only unit that would fit in our 2003 Lexus LS-430 with no behind dash mods - looks great - sounds great ... nice upgrade to stock radio. Crutchfield support was great as well - super fast ship.

Pros: Best unit for LS-430 ... great display and sound ... all the modern features ...

I just installed the Alpine ILX-W650 in my daughters 2005 Toyota Highlander for the Bluetooth hands free features and it works great. I picked up the Metra harness for the factory JBL system and everything works great and the sound quality is improved over the factory deck. The menu is intuitive and the CarPlay works flawlessly.

Big upgrade from my stock radio. I really love the ability to use bluetooth and also like Carplay. Only negative is the volume control. I don't have a steering wheel control so finding the up/down arrows can be a challenge while keeping my eyes on the road.

This is the best radio I've ever had. The only thing I don't really like about it is the start up time. It takes about a minute to come on. But if you start the car and go to reverse the reverse camera will turn on without it fully turned on. Sp you have the camera immediately

This is my first double uble din media player. I purchased it for ability to use Android Auto. So far it's been great. It does seem to work slow, but that may be my older Samsung Galaxy S7 phone.

Pros: Easy to use, in depth EQ's

Cons: Slower startup and Android Auto pairing

Excellent Upgrade for your Factory Hardware

    2012 Jeep Compass

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

For the price, this is an amazing upgrade for my factory radio in my Jeep. The Android Auto works perfectly with my phone and we just returned from a several hundred mile vacation. I used this to navigate with Waze and it flawless. I know people have had problems with Android Auto on many devices, my advice: use a recommended USB flush mount that is recommended for it (I asked Crutchfield, of course) and a high quality cable with your phone. A lot of problems seem to be "cheap" USB cables and mounts.

Pros: Price. The screen is excellent and very touch responsive. Unit seems well built and sturdy with lots of options for connecting speakers, existing car features (with optional wiring interface).

Cons: I wish interface was a little more customizable, but Alpine does have firmware updates that the end user can install - maybe someday.

Cons: FM tunner, very limited range No HD tuner Sometimes drops android auto

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

For the most part an easy installation and great unit. Only real issue is the AndroidAuto. Had read previous reviews stressing how important a good USB cable was. Using this with a Samsung Galaxy S7, so specifically bought a couple of Samsung USB cables ahead of time. On installation tried 3 different cables, would not recognize device. Kept coming back with "This device is not supported" message. After a quick talk with Tech Support to verify both Android and Alpine Firmware versions, Tech opted to send me a verified USB cable that always worked. Wrapped up the install and remarkably the AndroidAuto suddenly recognized my phone. For the next 5 days this worked without a hitch. On receiving the new cable swapped it out with my original. Unit operated for about 10 minutes and dropped out again with the "not supported" message. Shut everything down, disconnect, reconnect and start up, good to go. For about another 10 minutes. Went through this process several times and ended up switching back to my original cable. Does occasionally drop out, but typically only requires starting AndroidAuto on the Alpine again and it will run fine. Occasionally, requires shut down, disconnect, reconnect and startup to bring it back. This is not horribly inconvenient, but of course it has dropped out a couple of times during a critical moment and lost directions in Waze. Obviously, a communication glitch with Android. Hopefully Alpine will get this figured out sooner rather than lat

So far this deck has exceeded my expectations. Android auto is exactly what i wanted for my application and this unit looked very interesting. I had no interest in CD or DVD playback. I just wanted to play amazon music and pandora while being able to have my local sports radio stations. I do have all new fosgate speakers and a slim sub behind the rear seat in my truck and this unit makes it all sound excellent. The EQ is very deep and fine tuning can be had. I would definitely buy again or recommend. Bottom line, is if you want a nice big screen with no buttons, Android auto, tweakable EQ and dont care about CD's and DVD's, this is a no brainer. Full disclosure. I did install a microbypass and everything works like a charm.

    Not Reliable - Freezes Frequently

    Verified customer (What's this?)
    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This product has a poor quality to it that I've never experienced with another stereo. The sound buffers and music cuts out when it seems that the memory is running at max capacity. When I say memory, It's hard to have a call, run maps and music at the same time. It freezes and people's voices stop coming through. Music starts to chatter and then it freezes. I've had to pull over just to shut the car off so that this particular stereo will reset. I got this as an upgrade to my factory stereo and make my driving safer while I work. It ended up being more dangerous. The controls are very primitive and there's not much you can do with sound eq besides Bass, trebble and mid. The backup camera in my car looks foggier than when the stock stereo viewed thru it. Maps crashes a bit but I think a higher quality cable will fix this. Overall, I give this stereo a 1 star. Especially for anyone who commutes. This stereo can be a hazard. Expecially if you're using the GPS for work and you're somewhere unfamiliar when the thing freezes. My customers and coworkers hate calling me in the car. They say it sounds terrible. I'm happily switching to the ever reliable Kenwood thanks to Crutchfield and their amazing customer satisfaction standards. Crutchfield, you guys are the best. I'm forever a customer. It was just my fault for picking such a crummy stereo trying to save a buck. Shame on me :-)

Pros: It powers on... AM and FM work fine.

Cons: Freezes, no call audio, poor controls, doesn't operate more than one function at a time without crashing. Poor connectivity for android auto, Dropped calls, GPS crashes, Have to pull over and shut off car to reset.

The product is amazing. As a safety feature, the system requires the handbrake to be up to be able to pair with your phone's Bluetooth and to access any information. The installation was a bit of a pain. Im happy I didn't need to alter/cut the Jeep radio frame in order for it to fit.

My daughter and I finished the install just a few days ago. So far, so good. Everything works great. CarPlay is awesome! We did it in two sessions: head unit and mic the first day, backup camera and cleanup the second day. The Crutchfield video for the 8th generation Civic was exactly what I needed, especially for connecting the parking brake wire. The backup camera install video was also helpful. We're very pleased with the Alpine so far.

This unit is feature-packed considering it's price point. I threw it in my beater vehicle so I could enjoy my commutes a little more. Screen is responsive, Android Auto worked without a hitch, installation was a breeze, especially considering how shallow the unit is. One thing to note, unless you have a Google Pixel phone, Android Auto requires a Hardline USB connection. Learned that the hard way on an OEM unit with Android Auto, same holds true for aftermarket units like this.

Overall very good radio. Simple and easy to use interface. The radio it's a very clean look to it. And it was easy to install we are the adapter purchased from Crutchfield. In hindsight I would have purchased the Ready Harness service just for convenience sake. I am not sure if this is an Alpine or Apple issue, but CarPlay interface with my IPhone 7 is horrible. My unit is updated to the most current firmware as is my phone. Works great with Bluetooth.

I wasn't looking to break the bank but wanted to update my '07 Dodge Charger SuperBee stereo to an Apple carplay unit. The car hasn't the factory upgraded stereo and I was concerned about maintaining sound quality.. this little unit actually improved the quality and thus far has worked flawlessly. I love the ease of use and the quality of sound I now get. Customer service has been top notch as well!

Very nice head unit. The equalizer, crossover and time correction gives an amazing tunability. I've owned quite a few Alpine head units. This one was the cheapest priced, but performed way better. The only complaint is that to use the Android Auto my phone has to be plugged into the USB port!

Great head unit, and being shallow, lots of room for wiring harness behind the unit. Boot time is a little longer than I'd like (about 20sec or so), but the rear view camera picture is available almost immediately. Android Auto works well, but I have found a bug where it randomly disconnects and restarts when using Google Maps (Waze works flawlessly). Didn't realize how much I miss a volume knob, until you don't have one. Overall, it works well, sounds great, and is a huge improvement over my stock unit.

    Pros: Sound, Appearance, functionality

Cons: Bug issue with Google Maps and Android Auto, No volume knob.

For the money, this is probably the best unit available today. I bought this to install in a Porsche 997.1 convertible, but wanted to keep the OEM Bose amp and speakers. The sound quality of the upgraded factory system was more than adequate, but had the Flintstones era GPS maps, and no Bluetooth. This unit fixes all of that (with Android Auto or Carplay, no native NAV). The sound quality is excellent. There are plenty of controls to tweak the sound to suit any environment. The sound quality through BT is quite good, even in a convertible where there's more ambient noise present. The swipe functionality works quite well, and is a major reason I selected this unit over one of the Sony units that still has a volume knob, figuring this would be almost as good. The problem is that the swipe features do not work while using Android Auto/Carplay. There is only one USB port, so if you'd like to run AA/Carplay to run Waze, as you listen to music off a USB flash drive, you can't. A second USB port, or SD card slot would be a very welcome addition. There is no split screen functionality, so if you're running AA/Waze, and want to change a radio (FM or Satellite) station, you have to click the button to switch back to the Alpine unit, change the channel, then launch Android Auto again, and reselect Waze. First world problem, but aggravating while you're driving. Last minor issue is the inability to change the splash screen, to give it a more OEM lo

Pros: Excellent sound quality, Great options for tailoring sound, Clean, uncluttered interface, Rear camera support, Swipe features (with native Alpine functions) works well

Cons: No split screen, cumbersome to switch between Android Auto and native Alpine functions, Only one USB input, no SD card input, Swipe features not functional while using Android Auto, Screen is a fingerprint magnet, Unable to change splash screen

Crutchfield advisors also recommended some harnesses which were great. Their tech support made the installation super easy as they guided me through the various wires and which color mapped to what. The number and bulk of wires was substantial, but the shallow head unit left room for the wires. It has several connections for cameras and works very well. Great upgrade to the factory system.

Works amazingly well! Got the ready harness service with this. Two wires are not connected by the default vehicle connections; Parking Brake Signal Lead and reverse lamp. Install instructions didn't indicate that either were required but after I got everything put together, several menu functions weren't available. Bottom line, find the parking brake signal lead for your vehicle and use the included wire tap to connect the wires! Once I did this, everything works beautifully! This device does use firmware and can't pull the updates through your phone, so check the instructions to get the updates and improve the functionality of the unit! I couldn't be happier with this purchase/install!

Pros: Sound quality, ease of installation, fit

Cons: Unclear completeness of instructions (but that could be my own fault for not reading the owner's manual before starting)

This head unit was exactly what I needed. I wanted something completely smooth with no physical buttons, this way later on it won't look dated. It blends in perfectly with my Mercedes CLK430. Hookup was simple since I got the suggested wire harness kit, steering wheel kit, and XM tuner. Car play has been great to have since Google maps updates on its own, without paying for updates like a HU with Nav built in. Also, I had a stock Bose amp and Bose speakers with the original Becker HU, this Alpine completely woke up my sound system and sounds 1000 times better now. An EQ is something I had to have and this system has it. Everything about this HU works with the entire stock system, except the disc changer in the trunk. But I don't care because everything I have is digital. And lastly, voice to text and having it read my texts to me... this is a GREAT feature.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of install, ease of setup, simple to use.

Cons: There really are no cons

I was in the market looking to upgrade my factory radio to one with Apple CarPlay and a backup camera. There are a ton of options out there but for the price it was hard to pass this one up. After installing and using it for a few weeks now I'm still very happy with my purchase. All together i got everything I needed for under $500, plus kept the functionality of the steering wheel controls. I also highly recommend spending the extra $ to let Crutchfield make all the wire harness connections, big time saver on the install. So if you take the price of this great unit and back that up with the fast and friendly customer support by the Crutchfield staff, this purchase is a no-brainer!

Pros: Great Sound, made the factory Bose speaker system better in my opinion. Easy navigation through the menus. Easy installation, no dash modifications were needed. Great radio reception. No mechanical buttons or knobs. Screen is very responsive to touch. Multiple camera hook ups. Price, price, price!

Cons: No remote. You have to set your parking brake before you can access some of the systems menus. It's a pain in the neck but kudos to Alpine for setting up this way! We all need less distractions while driving!

*returning this unit The radio functionality works great. The unit has malfunctioned multiple times. Froze and couldn't get it to shut off. I had to stop my car in traffic power the Car off to get it to reset. During Apple car play it froze up and the whole screen was blurred. I had to unplug and replug the phone back in. When backing up some type of interference in the radio would absolute make the loudest noise. It was a cool concept. To much aggravation. The radio as much as I messed around with the sound profiles. Can never get it to sound good with my Bose. Sounds better with stock radio. Units coming back out in a few days. Lost 100 bucks getting this thing installed. Not happy. I take it the integration with car play is just to ahead for it being ready. Back to stock I go.

I go back and forth on this radio. There is an awful lot to like. The touchscreen and interface are the best on any radio I have ever had, hands down. I like the ability to customize the display on the backup camera. Sirius and Bluetooth work flawless. The size is the best part, the depth allows plenty of room to mount the 450 amp and still have more room behind the unit than the typical install. Now the flip side. There are a few things that make me shake my head. There is no RDS from FM displaying song titles. Android Auto can only be described as buggy. Note: I have several other android auto radios that work well, so the complaint is not with android auto but the way it is implemented. It will randomly stop working or will freeze periodically. The last thing I noticed is that there is no album art in Sirius, which seems like an easy thing to add. Others have complained about not being able to customize backgrounds, which does seem like a miss. While the cables that come with this unit are top notch they could do a better job of the interfacing with the 450 since most connections are hidden once you add on the external amp.

    Pros: Price, size, 450Amp

Cons: No RDS, No Sirius Art, Android Auto

I'm very pleased with this unit. Initially I was concerned about the size and location of the volume controls and almost purchased another product because of that, I'm glad I stayed with the Alpine. It turns out that the buttons are very touch sensitive and easy to find while driving, so I hardly miss that there isn't a volume knob. Sound quality is very good, the screen is easy to see in all light conditions. Apple car play is awesome and is about as responsive as what I have experienced with factory units in GM and Hyundai vehicles. The SiriusXM SXV300V1 tuner works very well with strong reception. I find that toggling back and forth from Apple Car Play screens to the main interface to adjust the radio is easy and there isn't lag time between screens. I've owned many Alpine products over the decades, this is my favorite one so far.

Pros: Shallow depth makes installation of accessories like satellite radio tuner and cameras much easier. User interface is simple and intuitive. Being able to see the Waze navigation app on the big screen and have the alpine lower my music volume when the voice navigation commands happen.

Cons: Can't figure out how to make the supplied microphone work and it's very frustrating. Alpine documentation is very sparse on this topic. Having to tap into the parking brake signal in order to get into the setup menu is just dumb and irritating; it's not making us more safe I guarantee it.

I installed this head unit into my 2008 Boxster and am very pleased with it. The screen is very responsive and the sound quality is better than the stock stereo. The ILX-W650 has an integrated light sensor, which I appreciate since the 987 doesn't have an illumination wire inside the harness. You can't turn the display off completely, but it gets dim enough to not blind you at night. I didn't want to connect the unit to my parking brake, so I installed a bypass and now all functions work all of the time.

Pros: Responsive screen, good sound, good call quality

Cons: Can't turn display off completely

couldn't be happier...did not have to cut out stock bracket since this unit is so shallow. Plenty of room for wiring. screen is visible with top and doors off and direct sunlight on it. Made the stock system speakers sound much better. Android auto works very well. plug and play with pre-wired harnesses.. NOTE: Jeep JK owners will need to engage parking break TWICE in order to program the unit after install...

Pros: no bracket cutting, visible in sunlight, improved stock sound

    Cons: none

If you're looking for a great sounding stereo , without overkill , then this should satisfy . I installed this in my 2018 ridgeline sport . the sound quality is superb . The setup is simple and the sub menus are easy to use . Android auto works good so far. Make sure to hook the parking brake wire to it's proper location , because unlike most aftermarket head units , you cant simply ground it ! Some people complained about not being able to change screen colors . Lol . not a deal breaker for me ...

Pros: Great sound at an affordable price . Android auto works well , ALPINE quality !

For the price this unit is packed with features including ApplePlay. The user interface is simple and well thought out. Unfortunately I could not get it to work with iDataLink in my 2018 4Runner so I returned it for a Kenwood (which integrates seamlessly.) Even though I could not get this unit to work in my vehicle I'm still giving it 5 stars based on value and design.

OK so Alpine always makes good radios, looks very nice, touch screen is nice, do not like the volume buttons, physical buttons way better. OK now to why i returned this unit and exchanged it for what always buy which is a Pioneer. The sound on this unit is horrible, bass, treble just the simplest things of sound are bad. Exchanged for a Pioneer and OMG sound is amazing on it.

2014 Dodge avenger 2nd generation Right off the bat the handbrake lead (yellow/blue wire off the radio harness) gave me some issues with it not being connected correctly and this wouldn't allow me to access anything but am/fm radio and audio settings. Audio sounds great, android auto works flawlessly but I somehow cannot access the setup page for the system, volume etc.... I need to do more research as to why these items are just not opening up for me.

Pros: I appreciate the way Crutchfield adds the accessory parts and pieces for installation without having to purchase individually!

Cons: Handbrake parking lead wire (yellow/blue stripe wire from the head unit) not properly noted on where to tie it to. Also my setup page doesn't work...

    Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It took me a while researching various receivers with CarPlay that would fit my car ('01 Miata w/Bose) before I settled on this Alpine. I have to say I'm very pleased with it. The CarPlay works just as it should, I get my iTunes, Messages, phone calls, plus a couple apps I use, like Spotify and Google Maps - all working fine. The short depth of this system makes for an easy install in a small space, especially if you are using the SLC-4 adapter.

Pros: Plenty of installation room, CarPlay, great display, great sound, works with old Bose (OEM) amp & speakers (using SLC-4 adapter)

Cons: Minor "getting used to it" thing - if your vehicle does not have steering wheel controls, the lack of a volume knob might be a con for some

This might be the best radio I've ever owned. The sound is clear. It fit wonderfully in my Hummer without modification of the vehicle. The apple play worked incredibly well. I added a satillite radio and got three months free. The only downside is that this unit needed to be wired by the end user to the harness sold on Crutchfield. That was not noted on their website and required eventually for me to take it to an installation shop. However, well worth the cost.

Cons: Wiring must be done by buyer.

I upgraded to this head unit from a factory unit in a 2016 Kia Forte. I am not impressed with the functionality. I am not able to get car play to work at all even after the lastest firmware update. I also hooked up the retainer that was offered at checkout and it's unbelievable that it will charge my phone and my girlfriend's iPhone but neither will work with car play. Another downside is that when a phone is plugged into the USB, Bluetooth is not available. I'm going to call customer support when they open back up and request to have this product exchanged or refunded. I would recommend spending a little more for a better product. I will definitely warn others about the overall functionality of car play and the inability to use any other function while it's plugged into the USB. Also make sure your phone is compatible with this radio, alpine units only have compatability with newer iPhone and Samsung with exception of several others. My Google pixel 2 is not compatible and that's a deal breaker for me. I hope Alpine will take some time on their next firmware update. It is desperately needed for this unit.

I just installed this radio in my (new to me) 2010 Tacoma Access Cab. The shallow depth makes it easier to cram the excess cabling behind the unit. The interface with CarPlay is seamless....very easy to navigate through songs and playlists. The sound of the unit and the ease with which sound adjustments made be made is great: adjustments are plainly shown on the screen, making it easy to use the simple bass, mid and treble adjustments or the more precise parametric equalizer. I was a bit intimated by the need to tap into the parking brake to enable all functions of the unit. Not to worry; Crutchfield provided me with a photo of the fuse panel and pointed me to where the proper cable is located. Using a simple line tap (found at my local auto parts store) the connection was simple. The dash kit needed a little adjusting since the bezel which is attached to the head unit does not sit flush with the kit when it is installed. I remedied this by putting 2 washers under the positions where the brackets are bolted to the frame (using double sided tape for the washers), although 3washers may give a more flush fit. As always, Crutchfield's support was first rate throughout the process.

This radio is a good value price wise but lacks in performance. Connecting Android auto with the supplied extension with three or four different USB C cables of various links and quality all had the same pixelation look on the screen when using it. It's almost like it couldn't refresh the picture fast enough.

    Pros:

Cons: -Wired carplay/Android auto -Display issue with Android auto. -Have to connect it to a emergency break wire to allow access to settings. -the buttons are to close to the edge of the screen to not hit on accident when using Android auto and selecting the on screen buttons displayed by Android auto.

This is a very good head unit for the price. The screen looks good and the touch screen is very responsive. Apple CarPlay works well. The only downside is the features it lacks such as HD radio, movie playback, and the alpine tune it app. You really can't expect those features from a Apple CarPlay Head Unit that is in this price range. The sound quality it outputs is good. I have an Alpine type r amp and component speakers and they all sound nice together.

Great sound quality via the RCA outputs (4 volts on these preamps) Capacative touch screen is responsive and much more usable than a resistive touch screen Screen is large, pretty, and while it takes on glare in direct sunlight, it's still usable Wired CarPlay works great, is reliable and fast and honestly is a safety feature in many ways No lag with the interface Outstanding customization options including three digital crossovers, 13 band equalizer, time compensation per speaker, etc. Cons: - no physical buttons (the buttons you see are part of the capacative touch screen) - no way to skip songs while in Apple Maps (part Apple's fault, and part Alpine's for not having physical volume/skip buttons) Wireless CarPlay would be great except I usually am charging my phone while I drive anyway so I opted not to spend twice as much as this unit cost me for a unit that does wireless. Installed quickly and easily in a 2010 Honda Civic with the inexpensive Crutchfield installation gear. Overall, I love this head unit - easy 5 stars. At this price, it's untouchable.

Some of the SXM features it claims to have are not there. Also when I select categories or search when in SXM it switches to that screen for a second and then right back to the SXM main screen before I can do anything. Maybe mine is just messed up or needs a firmware update. As far as the features that it does not have that it is supposed to, it does not show album art and station logos, let you pause, rewind and replay up to 60 min of content, let you start songs from the beginning, or scan and select songs when tuned to a favorite music channel using TuneStart and TuneScan. Calling Alpine today to sort it out.

Pros: Price, smart phone features, size

-A simple radio upgrade, without all the unnecessary fluff. It does all I want in a head unit. Other models add eye candy and more gadgets that imho, only inflate the cost and add to more distractions to drivers. Easy to install with a copious amount of room behind the radio for wiring, easy to use and ready for a backup camera, satellite radio, subs and amps. In addition, there is a nifty amp that attaches to the back of the HU. -Bluetooth and phone calls connect so much faster than they did with Uconnect -Beware, the micro USB (Jeep Wrangler) to USB adapter may not be compatible with Carplay and there is no port on the front of the unit. -Also, not the radio's fault, the Metra adapter for a double DIN opening fits poorly

Pros: Depth of HU makes for easy install Clean, minimalist appearance Almost instant connection for Bluetooth and phone calls

Cons: No USB port on the face of head unit

This radio is great I have no complaints at all. The touch screen is responsive and looks great, the way the unit sits flush in your dash is amazing as well. Only thing that I don't like is that there is a feature where your parking brake has to be on to do anything which is frustrating. However would definitely recommend buying this product.

I finally had to be honest with myself..... I don't watch movies in my truck, I rarely listen to CD's, and most of the time I use my Iphone as a GPS. Once I was able to admit the truth to myself .... I figured out that this unit is great for people like myself that really only need a smooth interface with their phone. The ILX-W650 allowed me to keep things I use like the backup camera, fm radio, and connect it all to their existing vehicle controls (requires an adapter.) It really fit my application perfectly. The preamp outputs are clean. The bootup is quick. The Bluetooth is connects without issue. The crossover and equalizer controls are amazing. The interface with the unit itself and the phone are just like having a 7" cell in the dash. It will even read your text messages out loud to you. I'm impressed.

Pros: The preamp output signal is nice and clean. The bootup is quick. Bluetooth connects without issue. The crossover and equalizer controls are amazing. The interface with the unit itself and the phone are just like having a 7" cell in the dash. The interface will read your text messages to you and tell you who they came from. I can't believe this product is under $300. Very user friendly and as technical as you want it to be with all the adjustments you can make in the x-over and equalizer configurations. Apple play is a must have safety feature in every car. I recommend you spend the extra $200 and get the power pack because it sounds amazing and very clear through my upgraded JBL speakers.

Oh its exactly as described. Easy to operate and install. But as others have said. Check for an update on alpines website. The rear view camera is glitchy when in use and when I plug my iPhone 8 in via usb cord says device not recognized eventually it would work once I did the update it worked fine everytime. Now this is a flgreat multimedia head unit. None of the flashy lights and all that nonsense definitely shallow I have a 17 ram the instructions said to cut out the rear radio support I did not have to. Say again you don't have to with this radio. All you do is mount the radio in the supplied mounting plastic house and trim it once screwed in at the very rear of the headunit then out in the dash. Back to the headunit. Love the cross overs and the ewww settings are as you would suspect. Now the idea of mounting the optional amplifier is great and then you would have to cut out the rear radio support but I'm not using the power pack I'm running a 5 channel. Over all a good buy for the price

Was initially going to be a five star, as the radio has been fantastic with my iPhone 6s. However, i recently purchased a Google Pixel 3a and problems arose. When hooked up via USB, the radio reports "device not supported". WHen connected via BlueTooth, the radio just locks up then enters an endless reboot cycle. Updating to most current software did not correct the issues. At this point, the iLX-W650 is just an expensive tuner.

This is a great radio, and when you consider the price, it's really very impressive. It installed in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler easily. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where I wanted to mount my mic and my USB port. I purchased this along with the 6 foot USB extension you can buy from Crutchfield. I drilled a hole that allowed me to flush mount it in the center console and it all looks factory. When researching radios, I saw a review on another site where someone complained this lacked features. They then went on to describe that the "features" they were missing were neon lights changing all the time and flashing like a 2000's era rave. He is correct, but it's not a downside, it's awesome. This radio had a very factory look and feel when installed, which is exactly what I want now that I am not a 14 year old boy. It looks great, and everything besides the screen (which is bright and responsive) fades in the background, as it should. Sound quality is a great improvement over the factory radio. I no longer need to crank it up like I did with the factory head unit. Bluetooth connects quickly. Steering wheel controls work great still as well. I am using this primarily within the CarPlay mode, & it is very nice. Being able to set the steering wheel controls to do extra things with long presses work well to activate Siri, play/pause, & answer/end calls without taking your hand off the wheel. Shallow depth means this is the only unit I could fit in my space. Sound is quite good. My biggest complaint is with only one USB port you cannot play music off a USB stick and use Andriod Auto (or Carplay) at the same time, only one or the other. A USB hub is not recognized. I've known Alpine to be a quality car-audio brand, and seeing this shallow mount unit at this price point, as well as possibility of adding a low-profile amp easily made me choose this unit. After a month of use, it's mostly a good unit with two glaring issues, both with android auto integration. Firstly, when music is played through android auto (iheart/spotify/pandora), the sound quality is significantly worse than what's heard through bluetooth audio. While the unit says the EQ is working, the Media Xpander options don't work, leading me to believe those sound augmenting features don't work with Android Auto. Also, the unit will not play bluetooth audio while using android auto. This is annoying, given the sound quality issue, although this may not be easy to resolve, as Android auto may not allow BT audio simultaneously. Secondly, the android auto app crashes constantly. When you first plug it in after getting into car, the Android Auto app will crash in about 5-10 minutes, requiring you to unplug phone, and then plug it back it, after which the App will usually not crash until the next time you power cycle the head unit. Other than that, the interface is minimalist/no-frills which is fine. The sound quality is very good via bluetooth (I also have add-on amp ktp-445a). Installation was pretty easy (on par with other double din installs). Mic quality via bluetooth or android auto seems fine. I hope Alpine will address the Android Auto c

Revised review from last review down below. Turns out to get the best sound from your iphone or iPod plugged in through USB you need to turn CarPlay off and use phone like a iPod. Did that and made a big improvement in sound. Sucks though cause CarPlay is nice to use but I prefer better sounding music through my cars system. But still able to control everything through steering wheel and still able to make and receive calls.

After being familiar with the caliber and reputation of Alpine for many years, I am highly disappointed in this unit to the point that I pray I recurved a defective unit. As an installation, I have an amp for highs and an amp for the sub that was previously driven by a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX. I decided to replace this radio to get something more up to date and as I use Waze more than anything, GPS was no longer required for the radio. On the Alpine, the CarPlay was very glitchy. It was able to be smooth and responsive to my touch, but many of the apps didn't seem stable when running. At times the unit would just reboot while I was driving. The last straw happened when I was taking a business call and it rebooted. Right after my install, which was very straight forward, I did a firmware update to the latest version (I think it was 1.01 at the time). The audio quality was also very poor to the point that even maxing out both my sub level and EQ setting for the sub, it still was like the sub was non existent. I checked the RCAs with a o-scope and signal was being passed through, but did seem lower. The highs were bright and the mids weren't anything to write home about. Also, compared to the Pioneer Bluetooth calling, people on the other end complained about a lot of noise from my mic on the Alpine. Needless to say, I returned this unit and went back to a Pioneer AVIC-W4400NEX, and peace has returned to my life.

Pros: Installation depth is incredible and makes it very easy to get wires in the dash.

    Cons: Literally everything else.

So I installed this on my 2015 Jeep JK (2 Door). I'll start with the bad. 1. The radio lacks lows and bass compared to the factory radio and speakers. Not that the Factory radio had much, but I lost what I had. 2. This is a short nose radio. And the Jeep has a curvey dash. Because of that, the included dash will not push out the radio far enough to cover the bottom causing a small ugly lip. I had to push out the kit by installing washer between the dash and dash kit. The good: 1. Lots of features. EQ, x-overs, easily add a backup cam, and apple car play. 2. Highs and mids sound great. 3. Easy to use. Hope that helps.

Pros: Lots of features. Highs and mids sound great. Easy to use.

Cons: The radio lacks lows and bass. Small ugly lip without mods.

Giving three stars due to Apple CarPlay music streaming quality. The unit I have has the latest firmware and Bluetooth and radio all sound really good BUT for some reason USB CarPlay sounds not really good, sounds flat and doesn't produse the bass and treble I know my system can do. I will say Bluetooth does indeed sound better then my less then a year old alpine but this unit doesn't compare to the older unit USB streaming which really sucks. Most everybody knows streaming through USB and AUX should be the first choice for sound quality before Bluetooth. It's a disappointment that CarPlay sound is so bad. I was looking forward for CarPlay but the sound quality just bums me out. One last thing is that in the setting you can't turn on MX setting when your phone is connected to usb/CarPlay all other sources you can, I think that would help CarPlay a lot of Alpine would fix that in a future firmware update.

This unit is no slouch. I've installed the best through the years and for the amount of money, you can't beat this Alpine. What it lacks in (custonized backrounds, high power internal amp, i.r.remote, navigation, etc.)it makes up for in fuctionality and ease of operation. Horray for Alpine making this very affordable unit. Very clear video screen for backup cam. Full touchscreen a big plus. Fully functioal pre out control. Able to upgrade internal amp with "power pack". The Digital Media Player market has been a game changer, and now with a reduced price. Everbody is getting one. Nobody uses CD's anymore. I'm in! My next vehicle is getting one of these.

Pros: All the room behind the unit.

    Cons: None.

I bought this unit for the Carplay and Android Auto features. This is a nice economical way to have both technologies. So, being a cost effective solution there are some limitations with this unit. These limitations are: 1. Bluetooth sound is ok, Carplay and Android Auto sound is far superior. (I think Alpine is working on this, the new firmware mentions sound quality issues with bluetooth.) 2. You have to connect a wire in the harness to your parking brake signal. You cannot change settings without being stopped and having the parking brake activated. This sucks!!!! You cannot pair a bluetooth device to this unit unless the car is parked and parking brake is applied. if you have a passenger in your car with a killer playlist they want to play, you have to pull over, park the car and pair their device. And oh by the way, you can only pair up to 4 devices total on this unit. 3. The screen is nice and large. When you are just playing the radio, you only get the radio station numbers displayed. There is no radio station info or song information displayed, just numbers. My old OEM radio at least displayed the song being played and station info. Nothing on this unit. 4. Make sure you keep an eye on the firmware updates from Alpine on this unit. The unit right out of the box is buggy, lots of system crashes during carplay and android auto modes. The new firmware cleans a lot of these issues.

Pros: Carplay and Android Auto at this price point. Alpine sound is outstanding.

Cons: There is no volume knob. There are volume buttons. I knew this when I bought the unit, it just takes a little time to get use to changing volume differently. The limitations of the unit makes this a three star unit. My expectations for aftermarket units should exceed what I had in my old OEM radio.

I recently purchased the Alpine iLX W650 for my Toyota Avalon 2006 limited with JBL sound system. I'm very happy with the product so far and the stereo quality is very impressive. Startup is quick, approximately 10 seconds. For the rewiring I had to bypass one wire for the am radio since the interface wasn't amplifying it. Aside from that the product works without a hitch. I would highly recommend this product.

Could not be happier about this stereo. Was looking for an Apple CarPlay unit to upgrade my 2010 JKU with Infinity system. The wiring was so easy with the Crutchfield pre-wired adapter kit. The sound blows away the factory unit. I did have to use the rear fader setting to lower the overall master volume. It's just too loud at the lowest volume settings when the balance is at the default zero. This was an easy fix. I also added a rear camera while I did this install. The technical support team is so awesome. I had a minor question about wiring the camera because I have a manual transmission. They walked me through it in a few minutes. The response time for the camera going on in reverse is impressive. It's a faster response time than in my Grand Cherokee's factory camera. I initially had some delays in Apple CarPlay connecting with my phone. I troubleshooted and tried an Apple-issued lightning cable. I think this must have been the issue. It's connects within 5-15 seconds now every time.

Pros: Display is vivid and simple. I really like That there are no protruding buttons/knobs. It looks like a factory install. The sound is incredible.

Overall fantastic unit if your are looking for shallow depth and great expandability. Alpine hit it out of the park with this unit giving you everything you need and nothing of what you don't for a great price point. The size of the unit makes it very easy to install in alternate locations like the JDM Nav pod in the mid 2000 Subaru's. The interface is easy and straight forward and android auto/apple car play integration make navigation and voice control a cinch.

Pros: Super slim enclosure available amp backpack front and rear camera input

Cons: Parking brake connections locks out 90% of the units functions.

Great upgrade from the stock radio in my 2016 Jeep Rubicon. I was looking for something basic with CarPlay and big sound and this is it. Matches up perfectly with my Alpine speakers and I was blown away at how clear and powerful it is. Wrangler owners beware that the center console USB port that plugs into the UConnect box does not support CarPlay, so I just ran a new USB extension down under the dash and to the console. Otherwise installation was fairly smooth. CarPlay works fantastic and can't imagine driving without it.

I had an issue with the parking brake signal not being recognized so I could not set up Bluetooth or access several other options on the unit. I thought possibly the interface was defective, but after a call to Crutchfield, one tech said that on Toyota's you at times need to run a wire from the head and splice it into the wire for the parking brake to get it to work.

I've had this radio for 4 days. I will try and update this review once I've had more time with it. I bought this radio because I wanted better sound quality and I wanted Google Maps while on road trips. The interface is also super clean which I think is the best looking out of all of the current available options. Update the firmware. My under came with firmware that was a month old. Updating it resolved a bunch of issues such as the FM/AM radio automatically playing after Android Auto disconnected (annoying since a lot of times it would just be loud static), it also resolved a bluetooth sound quality issue. I was just about to pack this radio back up and return it due to these issues. Thankfully the issues now seem to be more limited and tolerable. Android Auto has some connectivity issues. I have to sometime connect my phone multiple times to get it to work without the connection dropping between the radio and phone. I ordered a new USB cable to connect to my phone as my research shows that this may be the problem. There is some static that seems to be originating from this head unit. I can hear it at all volumes when nothing is playing. If I turn up the volume it gets louder. I've connected the unit directly to a battery with nothing else running and it's no better. The automatic dimmer works great. When it turns on at night it starts out dim. The Alpine HDR backup/forward cameras don't work with this unit. The cameras are recommen

Pros: Clean interface Easy to setup and use Crisp display Alpine is fixing issues

Cons: There are issues/bugs Alpine HDR cameras don't connect Can't remove unused icons/features from display
