About the Alpine S-A32F

Big power from a small package

Alpine's S-Series S-A32F 4-channel amplifier can deliver 55 watts RMS to each of your car's front and rear speakers, making for some sweet sound on your drive. You can also run this versatile amp in 3-channel mode, powering a subwoofer with up to 160 watts RMS while driving a pair of full-range speakers with 55 watts each. And Alpine made this amp so small — it's got less than an 8" by 8" footprint and it's just over 2" tall — it can fit almost anywhere in your vehicle.

Technology that keeps you on the air

The amp uses Enhanced Shutdown Performance technology, which rolls back the output a bit when the amp threatens to overheat from playing at its limits too long. Instead of shutting down completely, it continues playing your music, until it cools enough to return to full power.

Convenient features

High- and low-pass filters put you in command of the frequencies that reach your speakers. The amp includes preamp- and speaker-level inputs, so you can install it in almost any vehicle, even one with a factory radio. If you're using the speaker-level inputs, the amp senses an incoming signal and turns itself on, eliminating the need to run a turn-on wire back to your vehicle's receiver or fuse box. An optional wired remote lets you control bass level from the driver's seat, when you're running a sub with Channels 3 and 4.

Features

Overview: The Alpine S-A32F 4-channel amplifier is effectively two full range 2-channel amps built into one chassis, labeled Channel 1/2 and Channel 3/4. Each section of the amp is bridgeable, so it can be wired as 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel.

CTA-2006 Compliant: CTA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CTA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CTA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output: 55 watts RMS x 4 into 4Ω
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 83 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 2Ω: 80 watts RMS x 4 (14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD+N)
    • Bridged: 160 watts RMS x 2 (14.4 volts, into 4Ω)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 98 dB (at rated power output, into 4Ω)
  • Frequency Response:
    • +0/-3 dB (1W into 4Ω): 10 Hz - 30 kHz
    • +0/-1 dB (1W into 4Ω): 20 Hz - 20 kHz

Controls

Gain Control: There are independent rotary gain controls for the two sections of the amplifier (Channel 1/2 and Channel 3/4). The amp will accept preamp level signals from 0.2 volts to 4.0 volts or speaker level signals from 0.5 volts to 10 volts.

Input Level: Set the input level switch to match the type of input signal used (Hi for speaker level and Lo for preamp level).

Crossovers: Channels 1/2 and 3/4 have independent crossovers. Each crossover has a 3-position switch to direct how it operates and both crossovers have a slope of 12 dB/octave.

  • Off: output is full range
  • HP: High Pass; crossover point is adjustable from 50 Hz to 400 Hz
  • LP: Low Pass; crossover point is adjustable from 50 Hz to 400 Hz

Optional Remote Control: The amplifier has an RJ-25 jack for adding the optional RUX-KNOB.2 wired remote level control for adjusting the channel 3/4 output remotely. The remote has a 20dB adjustment range (-20 dB to 0 dB relative to the gain setting).

Connections

Power/Ground: Two set-screw terminals connect the power and ground cables. The terminals accept up to 8-gauge wire (an 8-gauge wiring kit is recommended). The set screws are tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Remote Turn-on: The remote turn-on set screw terminal will accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screw is tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Speaker Outputs: The four pair of speaker outputs' set-screw terminals will accept up to 10-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Signal Input: Two pair of RCA jacks, labeled Channel 1/2 and Channel 3/4, connect to preamp level or speaker level input signals. If connecting the source unit's speaker wire to the input jacks, use a Speaker-to-RCA adapter or splice speaker wire to an RCA plug. When using a speaker level input signal, it may not be necessary to connect a remote turn-on lead because of the amplifier's remote sensing function.

Fuses: The 40-amp ATO fuse protects the amplifier. Another fuse (40-amp minimum) should be placed on the +12V power wire within 18" of the battery.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
Good ratings for Alpine amps, lower signal to noise ration than most comparable D-Class amps, hi and low pass crossover options. The sale price which brought the amp to $180.00 was an incentive. [ Michael  May 15, 2019 ]
A
This amp is replacing an older and VERY good JL amp. I saw reviews of Alpine amps that said Alpines were every bit as good as JL but at lower prices. Sure seemed like the way to go. [ James  Apr 24, 2019 ]
A
Well for one it is a new Alpine product and I have purchased their products before and have been more than satisfied with their products. I was in need of a 4 channel amplifier and was looking at other products but this one caught my attention and after reading the specs I decided this was the one for me. I have a Rockford Fosgate but it's over 15 years old. It was time for an upgrade. Hope this works well with my MM Polk Audio 6.5 speakers. I'll let you know if this amp brings them to life... [ Juan  Apr 02, 2019 ]

Q
What is the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the Alpine S-A32F 4-channel amplifier when connected to factory stereo outputs of a 2009 Chevy Avalanche?
[ Shawn  Apr 14, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
The THD on this amp is <= 1% at its rated power with a 14.4V power like you would have with the engine running in that vehicle. In comparison to amps that give 1W THD's, this amp is <= 0.03% THD in that case My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
