About the Alpine SPR-50C

Buck Pomerantz

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Alpine SPR-50C

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The Type-R SPR-50C component system features 5-1/4" woofers with multi-layer hybrid fiber cones that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness. Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for a larger listening "sweet spot" in your ride. The tweeters mount separately so you can focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-50C's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 5-1/4" woofers. External 2-way crossover networks control the high and low frequencies for seamless, clear sound — and they're 60% smaller than the old Type-R crossovers so they're easier to install. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Features

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series component speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones; for durability and superior linearity, they use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Motor Structure: The woofer's High-performance Linear Drive Motor structure features a square-wire voice coil with a large 30mm diameter, driven by a small but powerful neodymium magnet. This design provides linear motion over a wide cone excursion.

Neodymium Magnet: The neodymium magnet on the Type-R series woofers allows smaller speaker dimensions, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R woofers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Tweeters: The SPR-50C includes 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. When using the flush-mount housing you can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound toward your ears.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come installed in a swiveling flush-mount housing. You can also install the tweeters behind factory grilles using the included stealth mount brackets. The stealth mount brackets can be top or bottom mounted. The installed tweeter dimensions are:

Flush Mount (swivel) Factory Location (bottom mount) Factory Location (top mount)
Mounting Depth 0.67" 0.965" 0"
Mounting Height 0.43" 0" 0.8"
Cutout Diameter 2.007" N/A N/A
Frame Diameter 2.275" 1.7" x 2.8" 1.7" x 2.8"

Crossovers: The SPR-50C features low-pass crossovers attached to each woofer's input terminal and separate high-pass crossovers in-line between the woofers and tweeters. Because the crossovers are separate, the system can be bi-amped. Two-sided tape is included to mount the high-pass crossovers and their dimensions are:

  • Width: 2.65"
  • Height: 0.97"
  • Depth: 1.27"

Tweeter Attenuation: Each crossover has four tweeter level options, allowing you to precisely tune the high frequencies to the car interior and tweeter placement. Using the supplied jumpers select 0dB (no attenuation), -2dB, -4dB, or -6dB.

Q
Added new speakers would it require changing out base stock radio?
[ Chief  Apr 25, 2019 ]

A
No
[ James  May 01, 2019 ]
A
Only if your OHM Impedance of your Stock Head Unit is not a match to the Components.
[ KENNETH  May 01, 2019 ]
A
You don't have to change your base radio but speakers usually get damaged when people crank up the volume to the point that it's distorted because there wasn't enough amplification. By adding an amplifier you get to take full advantage of the speakers. Your stock radio might already have an amplifier built in.

Q
What will be a good amp for the alpine spr-50c?
[ Jamarius  Feb 13, 2018 ]

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
I'm going to install these in a 2013 Mazda 3 iTouring. My question is where to I mount the crossovers? My guess would be under the dash in the front. Is that a normal place to mount crossovers like these?
[ John  Oct 19, 2016 ]
2 answers
A
It depends on how you are feeding the wires and the length you have between the tweeters and woofers. On my E36 BMW, I measured the lengths and found that I was nominal for the dash so I had to put them in the doors. The crossovers are small enough to fit easily in either location.
[ Derek  Oct 20, 2016 ]
A
I had enough space in my door to Velcro the cross over. But mounting it under the dashboard will work to just need to make the wires longer
[ GARLAND L  Oct 20, 2016 ]

Q
What gauge wire to use in an 18 wheeler???
[ Charles  Apr 04, 2015 ]
4 answers
A
Vehicle application shouldn't matter for wire size. I generally use 12 gauge wire unless I am running directly from an amp and then I would step up to 10 guage
[ Doug  Apr 05, 2015 ]
A
Sorry, i did not do the installation. The tech department at Cruchfield should be able to answer.
[ JAMES  Apr 05, 2015 ]
A
18, same as any other type of vehicle
[ ZIJIAN  Apr 05, 2015 ]
A
I used 16 gauge speaker wire shouldn't be any different for an 18 wheeler they are going to get the same power to them as in a car
